Awesome! Saw Mr. Lightfoot 3 times in the 70's. I was a broke college student, could hardly afford the tickets but had my priorities. The woman I didn't marry was with me in my truck on a snowy Michigan road, December night, this song came on, and we fell in love all over again. The woman I married has had no such GL moment, still I love her more than life. No wonder I became a novelist, with Lightfoot's phrasings and imagery often creeping into my work. God, I'm a lucky man. Thanks for posting.
I'm from New Orleans and have seen GL the three times that he's been here (as far as I know). All were a thrill. I saw him at the new Orleans World Fair Exposition, and he was fabulous. His songwriting and insight, his maturity all deliver a polished performance that speaks so elegantly of the human condition.
what a treat and somewhat a miracle too, to be able to listen to gord play and sing this beautiful song... and watch moments caught in time. many thanks for sharing
hochbob, I love the fact that you mention Jim Croce, I have a few of his DVD's and I am a big fan of his. Very kind of you. Another great singer/songwriter who we lost too soon is Harry Chapin, and of course, John Denver. Gord is such a beautiful songwriter.
Gordon Lightfoot is the musical historian of our age; think of it, no one else of our generation brings to life what it meant to be alive in our not too distant past and what it is like to be in the now. I really hope he understands what his music and he himself, means to those that cherish his musical footprints.
@tishmcg17 as long as hes willing to come for us the fans, ( lord knows he doesnt need the money) i will go to the shows. even when he retires, his songs will paly forever on my stereo, and in my mind
Some people have a gift, a particularly rare talent...an ability to say the right words to touch hearts from all walks of life and all situations. This man is fabulous. I hope he continues to perform and his health gets better and better. Thank you so much for posting this song.
Saw him in Minneapolis on Saturday night....you could just hear so many people singing along and loving the memories and the gift of this incredible man. 73 years old and survived so much medical trouble in the past ten years, and out touring for three months straight!! Thanks, Gordon for your music and majic.
@MrPhatboy02 yes, the State is a nice place to listen to Gordon live. I understand he played alot of his later tunes than earlier tunes from the 60's/70's
One of the great things about his songs, his lyrics, are that they are so to the point and so universal that I find myself thinking, Oh, my God, he's lived my life. No one has written so many great songs, at least in the last half century.
Surely the most underestimated poet of all time. His lyrics take you to another place and time. I love this guy's music, and have done for 40 years. Thank you Gordon, especially for not becoming "corporate" like so many others have.
It's not the sleighbells (which are perfect in this song), or that snow is in the lyrics that make this a "winter" song. I can't think of many others right now, except almost all of "Goats Head Soup".
i've seen him twice, even got to meet him after the second show. i'm only 19 but i play a lot of his songs when i perform live. this is definitely one of his best though i've been hesitant to try this one cause i perform alone and it just doesn't sound right without the orchestration. its hard to find other people my age who appreciate this kind of music haha. this guy practically taught me how to sing, and it's great to see that he's still sharing his gift with us.
The must be a nation (no borders) of Gordon Lightfoot people out there, people who share the spot on tuning to hear the incomparably unique genius of this fine poet's resonant sound and spirit. I just tonight, thanks to an idle Youtube query, recaptured the special feeling I had so many years ago upon first hearing GL on "Ten Degrees and Colder" on a jukebox in some noisy bar, and wondering "who is that"? I'm not 64 anymore, but now a loving rambler, and the wide, western road is underfoot...
I have long respected Gordon Lightfoot's amazing gift as a story-telling singer/songwriter. But I never knew this was his song! I thought Sarah McLachlan wrote it. I still think her rendition of it is beautiful, but I am happy to know that the song has a deeper history. And that that history reaches back to the great Gordon Lightfoot. Incredible song!
Yeah, agreed. I can't think of anything or anyone thats been so overlooked in my life. So sad, especially at this time when he's at that age where he won't be with us a heck of a lot longer. Only wish i could talk to him and let him know what his music has meant to me for the last 35-40 years.
@oczad Oh my god, i was just about to say the same thing when i read this. No matter what else has gone on in my life, all the crazieness and confusion, i always find myself reverting back to Gordon Lightfoot's beautiful music, he's been my mainstay and always will be. I turn to him and his music whenever i need comforting and he never fails to make me happy again, even though a lot of his music is quite sad. I wish i could talk to him too, and be with him, i'll be devastated when he goes.
@rumbaby999 yep, same here. I almost don't even like calling it "music" because it's so much more. I don't think most people get it but his work has a spiritual component to it thats so much deeper than pretty much any other music. He can write lyrics and music that go together with such perfection and make you feel the full depth of beauty that life is capable of. It takes me away and makes me feel the beauty of life that i felt in my youth and no longer feel. That is, till i listen to GL.
Of the musical poets of my generation ( I am 64), none has had such a profound influence on me as a player and writer than Gordon Lightfoot. Rooted in folk, he was quickly covered by the many troubadors who he helped propel to stardom. Along the way, I believe he surpassed them all in terms of his body of original work. The excellence of his lyrics and melodic scores has well surpassed those of his contemporaries to include PP&M, Simon and Garfunkle, Jim Croce, and Bob Dylan.
I agree with you totally!!! I'm your generation and he is in the same league as all the ones you mentioned. I only pray he will stay well and continue to amaze us with his talent...
I can't pick a fav Gordon tune because there are so many amazing ones. But this one could well be. Lightfoot is my #1 all time fav. My whole life i have wondered why he never enjoyed the degree of fame he deserves. So many others not even remotely close to his level of talent have become far more famous and well known. Dylan is considered a poet for the ages. How in God's name could anyone not find lightfoots music to be light years ahead of dylans in that regard let alone musically ?

I so love this song. Didn't know that it was Gordon's. This is my song of longing for my husband who was in Germany ( our"home") while I had come "home" to be treated for Leukemia. It was a very snowy winter and I missed him so desperately.
I love Sarah Mclachlan's version of this song but hearing it like this I could feel why she was compelled to sing her own rendition. For the lack of a better word, the song is simply beautiful.
Goosebumps...I sought this out on Christmas Eve (today) because my son's in Afghanistan and my daughter-in-law is here in WI, halfway around the world. What emotion they must feel tonight. I had no idea Gordon could still "bring it" like this...an incredible performance and I now resolve to see him perform live in concert ASAP. Stunning performance of a most moving song...nearly moves me to tears even now.
Looks like this is from one of Gord's Massey Hall concerts maybe late 1980's/early 1990's. Thank you for posting this one! A beautiful song, great video, excellent sound quality. Makes me forget (almost) Sarah McLachlan's cover of it!

@yamahonkawazuki yes, your right on partbner............I fall asleep to Gordon listening to his tunes. Have a happy Easter ans we can dream/sing to all his tunes
@pkappel006 i want to go to a scaryoke bar one night and try a few of his tunes out. i can match him almost perfectly, ALMOST. maybe 95%, eventually i want to get a tribute band going. once i teach myself to play the guitar again
@yamahonkawazuki good for you partner, you could come up to St. Paul, MN and I can listen to all of our favorite Gordon Lightfoot tunes, jam together, sort of speak.......even at age 58
@pkappel006 thqat man is a hard act to follow. even if i can hit the voice 100%, then theres the emotion he puts into his music. i cant ever BE gordon lightfoot. BUT id liek to be known as to be able to sing like him. many people cover many peoples songs. BUT not many have covered lightfoot tunes. except sarah brightman song for a winters night. elvis did a GL tune as well. theres a few. but not widespread. i wish there were more
