Accurate demo. The beam is not quite as sealed as my triggered LED spot. They both light up the back side of my garden, some 200 yards or more. I've had my E2D well over a year until Wed, May 18, 2011 when it was stolen while a new battery was being installed in my pickup at Walmart. Of course, they opt out with a no-responsibilty sign for the sleaze they hire. I simply forgot to take it out. The battery was $70 cheaper than my Defender. I'll have to treat everyone as if they're thieves, :-(
This is a good light, a buddy of mine has one, but I gotta tell ya, it failed in comparison next to my Fenix TK-10. We put fresh CR123's in both our lights, and my Fenix's 220 lumen turbo mode was much brighter than his turbo mode. Also, the Fenix has a heaver body and thicker construction. The biggest point is my Fenix cost me 70 shipped, vs the SF's 140. You should check them out, they are great lights, and mine continues to impress me! :)
you should move to a free state where carrying a firearm is smiled upon... flashlights are good tools but not a worthy self defense weapon. your flashlight will unfortunately do nothing against a gun. Good quick review, hopefully one day all the states of this nation will have the same equal gun rights.
@jimbo45cal I'm pretty sure that all 50 states allow open carry, this is because it is our constitutional right to carry a weapon for self defense, hunting, and other needs. It is illegal for a felon to carry a gun, in that cases even hold any type of gun. What i believe that you were mistaken about was about CONCEALED carry. This is when someone conceals a gun on their person that cannot be seen by others, for example inside a jacket. In most states you have to have a permit to conceal carry.
@soaper1 While New York state "allows" guns, there are lots of restrictions, especially when you get into New York City. It's nearly impossible to get a carry permit for the city. Also interesting, I lived upstate for a while and when I went to file for my pistol permit it seemed to indicate that the permit allowed ownership only, and that you had to be special to get a concealed carry permit, and super special to get open carry privileges. I guess cause guns freak people out...
@jimbo45cal While this flashlight may not actually do anything against a gun, if properly used it will completely disorient and blind them, making their chances of hitting you much lower. I would believe this if I didn't own one and try it on myself one night just so I would have an idea of its potential. Not Ideal, but better than nothing. Then again, nothing is ideal when someone points a gun at you.
Pocket knives aren't very effective unless you know precisely where to strike. When fueled by adrenaline or drugs, like the typical attacker, you won't notice a tiny little blade puncturing you until you have suffered a tremendous amount of blood loss or have severed a main artery. However a bright light is guaranteed to blind despite how high on PCP your are or how much adrenaline you have. Therefore i would recommend the e2d over the pocket knife any day. Great review blackwell, thanks.
Good point. I carry a knife everyday, but its a tool, not a self defense weapon. Im buying one of these lights today in fact, on my way home from work. i just need to figure out how I will explain to the wife I spent $150 for a flashlight.
I just go mine on thursday and it kicks ass!I have a G2 but thought id upgrade to this and its worth every penney if you use a flaslight on a daily basis.Or for self defense.I think ill get a backup next!
Nice review. I have the 200 lumen version and it's very bright! Surefire's special optic lens helps to throw its beam pretty far for a flashlight its size. :)
Hey dude, I'm from Brooklyn as well and I can never leave my house without a self defense weapon. Currently I'm carrying just pocket knives, but I'm also interested in substituting that with a Surefire defender. I'm just curious if any stores in NYC stock them. Where did you get yours? Either I'm picking this up online or going to SoHo @ the IceBerg Army Surplus store.
I would honestly buy it online, i bought both of mine through ebay. Local stores tend to be overpriced and you have to pay tax, if you buy online you dont.
hey man I'm thinking of buying this flashlight. Do you mind telling me is it easy to fit in a pocket and also is the the E2D LED Model or the E2D LED Defender Executive?
maglites like the american auto companies deserve to be kicked in the balls until they bleed out their mouths! for all the white trash fucking junk that they produce! go lexus! go surefire!
The E2D LED Defender is my first SureFire. I was wondering if your low setting (5 lumens) had a green-ish tint? It's not as white as the high setting.
1:27 lol! You hear someone come into your home at night and you grab your light. Hmmmm. How about, grab your gun AND your light. There's a concept. Oh wait, can you Yorkies even own a gun? lol!
You live in NY and you think $21.00 is expensive for a dozen of those 123s? Why? Don't you yankees pay $9.00 for a cup of coffee? The coffee's gone in ten minutes; the dozen batteries should last you for the better part of a year or so, maybe more. What's the problem exactly? Try buying a dozen AA lithiums. D@mn near the same price. I'm surprised those batteries aren't outlawed in New York. Freakin' York.
pretty much the brightest flashlight you can get?... I don't think so . Maybe the brightest for its size :P . They have 3000+ lumen flashlights out there too. Though don't get me wrong, this is an awesome flashlight.
Couldn't agree more buddy, the E2D LED Defender can't be beat. And, I've tried them all - Fenix, Extremebeam, Wolf Eyes, Solarforce, Malkolf, EagleTac, INova, Streamlight - you name it. My newest addition an EagleTac T10LC2 rated at 295 lumens, pretty much the craziest shit I've ever heard run on two 123's. Well, if it sounds to good to be true, that's because it is. You get what you pay for and my E2D is brighter rated at only 120. Out-performs the others in just about every way - period.
I own both the Surefire E2D LED & the Fenix PD30. I prefer the Surefire due to better ergonomic feel and it's a little brighter than the PD30 even with just 120 lumens rating vs the Fenix 220 lumens.
good shit man i'm in bk too i just picked this thing up while i was in florida. and ya i agree about the cops they do tend to be assholes when it comes to that shit.
I am impressed, thanks for the review, I was considering just sticking to my old school e2d defender, (its more of a hiker for me) but I will have to invest in this for sure. ive edc'd it a few times, but I did not like the fact that it was bulb up, I switched to a custom 9p and it has stopped atleast 2 "sticky" situations before they started just with its light output. im pretty sure my e2d would have done fine, but because the 9p is brighter, it gave a bigger window of time. trust in SF
What over lights have you got? Beam pattern compared to TK10 in specific is whats got me thinking. You ever looked over on CPF fourms?, it'll empty your pockets, but its worth it.
I also have the streamlight super tac, I am going to be making a comparison video of those 2 soon, I am alos looking into purchasing the Tk 11 and comparing all three.
Not trying to diss ya man, but the fenix tk11 is brighter. I own the e2d defender, and the tk11. it's funny, because the tk11 also SOMEWHAT has that "toothed" bezeled head. but still an awesome light. and good review/demonstration.
Hey man great choice for a flashlight. I live in NYC also. The batteries aren't as expensive as you think. If you go to Duane Reade or Rite Aid those batteries are about 10-13 dollars per battery. They are usually used for high drain electronics such as cameras so they tend to cost 10-13 seeing as how you rarely change them on camera. Surefire decided to sell their own batteries to make it cheaper for their consumers to get fresh new batteries. I own the E2DL as well but I only have one setting.
10 to 13 dollars for about 1 or 2 if your lucky enough to find them on sale at Duane Reade. I would suggest going to Paragon Sports on Broadway in Manhattan thats the best place to get cheap Surefire Brand batteries. 1 dozen for 24.99.
If you look around for deals, you can get them around $1 per battery or less. Generally it requires you to buy them in bulk packs of around 40-50
DragunBreath 4 months ago
21 for 12 is a good deal actually. Just with my house phone not a cool light I have to pay around 13 dollars for one battery. Vtech slim.

how long do the batteries realistically last?
if i use this every night for about 1 hour, on the high power (200 lumens), whats your guess as to how often i would have to change the bats?

The maximum output is 120 lumens on high for this model. If you want 200 lumens you need to get the Surefire LX2.
