Gare was a very underrated scrapper. He was like Todd Gil. He didn't look for fights but he surprised everyone he fought and never backed down. Tough little son of a gun.
My Dad took me to many games in Buffalo.During the 70's. It was great hockey. I have two awesome recollections. Being at the "Game in the Fog" triple overtime.Robert scores on Parent.(1975 finals) #2: Watching Danny Gare. That little guy was FULL of "pissenvinegar" He could score like heck, and he could also scrap. He took on anyone, with ferocity. I even seen him dummy "The Hammer Schultz" once. THOSE DEFINITELY WERE THE DAYS!!
no sir jonathon won but by a very slight margine gare was a very good scrapper and was very underreated as a scrapper but jonathon just got those few shots in to knock him off his feet but gare kept goin hes a tough litle fucker he doesnt back down but even though he lost to jonathon i have to say i respect him because anyone who is willing to step i there with jonathon you have to respect you have to have balls to do it and gare had balls
LIAR buttkick? Those are strong words. You'd think the fact that I told you I loathed Milbury would have meant something. I wouldn't be giving him credit for something I didn't have to. Sorry Pal, but it's true. Did you watch EVERY Sabres game that Playfair played? Do you rememeber EVERY one of 'em? I don't recall the exact game or year that Milbury fought Playfair twice in one game and won both, but it really did happen. Just 'cuz you don't remember it doesn't mean it didn't happen.

I give Danny Gare credit -- he's a tough guy who once beat Gillies in a fight, but he got hammered to the ice by the BEST middleweight ever -- Stan Jonathan.
i dunno if hammered is the correct word....seemed pretty even to me, nothing real big landed either way....unless ur own of the people who counts the... ahem "takedown" as the deciding factor
well not only are u a bruins fan but ur also a liar......i'll give u the benefit of the doubt and say that maybe ur mistaken with someone else.....but milbury never even fought playfair once let alone twice.....so how did they fight twice in one night?......milbury was too smart to take on a top 10 all time fighter like playfair

stan johnathan is one of the best fighters that played in the show ...hes way smaller than all the guys he fights and i dont think i have seen him loose more than 2 fights
Hey BoSoxnation, it doesn't take much to know more about hockey than Cherry or Fischler! Melrose is okay, but those other two bozos? If you played for the Bruins, to Cherry you are virtually immortal! The game passed by Fischler at least 25 years ago!
Hey bosox i love johnathan and hes easily top 20 of all time but i hate when people say "so and so" beat "so and so" when rating fighters.....Gare beat Gillies and Gillies manhandled Johnathan yet they fought to an uneventful draw.....does that make Gare top 20 of all time....by the way Don Cherry has stated that Larry PLayfair was the toughest guy in the league 4 years runnin so everyone stop hatin on the guy for beating up everyone from boston and montreal
Gare was much tougher than many realize. Certainly a goal scorer first and foremost, but he was more than capable of taking on heavyweights. He deserves to rank among the toughest "middleweights" of all time, alongside Jonathon, Domi, McPhee, Howatt, Marson, PJ Stock, etc....
Was he too small? lol tell that to Behn Wilson who is on everyone's top 10 of all time list.
Jonathan beat him!
But apparently you know more about hockey than Don Cherry, Barry Melrose, and Stan Fischler...all of whom rate Jonathan as a top 20 all-time NHL fighter.
Are you kidding. Look at You Tube of Johnathon-Wilson fight. Wilson filled him in and rag dolled him. Sure Stan hung in there-but easy decesion for Wilson
That's about the third Danny Gare fight I've watched tonight where he's held his own with some of the toughest guys of his era - Gillies, Bridgeman and now Jonathan - pretty amazing.

Great fight by a scorer against one of the best enforcers of that time. Not only did Gare answer the bell, he answered the bell.

Close fight, about a draw I'd say with a very very slight edge to Stan.Gare was too busy scoring 50 goals a year but was a tough cookie

Gare standing in there toe to toe with Jonathon. That took balls.

I'm a Bruins fan who loathed Milbury as a player, however I'll never forget the night MIlbury kicked Playfair's ass not once but twice.
