  • Wow! This clip was really well done! It's very nice to find stuff about Symbolism which isn't trying to tell me, that there is a big, evil conspiracy going on or everything in the world is satanistic...

And I agree: Everyone should celebrate christmas/Easter/any other holiday, no matter what origin this person is. To me, it is not the religiuos aspect that matters, but the social. These days are WONDEFUL opportunities to be with your friend and family and simply have a wonderful time :)

  • I am whatever religion will get me out of working today :D

  • This deserves many more views than what it has.

    Excellent work

  • vrey good....should be broadcasted on FOX :D

  • Wow...Before watching this video I do remember coming across a few of idea's and rituals you talked about. But the video gives me a much clearer picture.. Thanks!!!

  • Ah, you did it again. It's one of life's greatest ironies that the catholic and orthodox churches kept alive not only christianity but also paganism. Today, it's pagan ritual and imagery that dominates the western world. It's also ironic that conservative and liberal christian fundamentalists tend to embrace these pagan tendencies (holidays, media, etc.) while non-political fundamentalists do not.

  • @relaxin001 Finally someone agrees! We can purge the intellect of religion, but those holidays continue to emotionally bind sane people to silly superstition. Science has improved the human condition more in its few hundred years that ever did religion across the millenia. Darwin and our host of scientists deserve more recognition than tribal savages Jesus, Abraham, and Mohammed. Intellectuals today vastly exceed in wisdom ignorant “prophets” of long ago. We should celebrate them.

  • i proudly celebrate the solstices, equinoxes, and the points in between proudly. PRAISE THE GODS!

  • I had heard Easter had to with the goddess Ishtar, myself.

  • This movie has so many lies, that I stopped counting

    virgin Isis? what ?

    St. Nicholas Catholic bishop? What?

Santa Claus = St. Nicholas ? WATH?

Ester what? Wahat is that? I celebrate Pascha

  • @VyckRo

    "I celebrate Pascha".

    Lol.

That word is so much like "paska" wich in Finnish means "shit". :D

    No offence intented.

  • @BlizBob I laughed at that too :')

  • Liked this video - I was once a Christian - until seven or so years ago and I would have watched this but would have still have insisted that Christians only took over these dates etc. in order to 'refute the Devil's power! Several of my friends still adamantly believe it and have never enquired as to how or why I changed my mind and no doubt make judgements about me such as having 'lost my way' or that I am angry with God. I don't now celebrate any festival - I just love Crimbo time!

  • Another theory of the birth of santa clause is reindeer eat berries that cause hallucinations by urinating in the snow then eaten by the locals.... Hence the term dont eat the yellow snow.

  • GIFTMAS

  • Those ancient Jesus pictures always freak me out.

  • You are not discovering religion.

    You are discovering culture.

  • Thank u for your knowledge upon the truth. More people should seek this knowledge of knowing the actual history, before judging someone else for not believing there religion.. Honestly they should first, do there homework behind the religious values they speak of and understand in the name of there religion, many were slain and slaughtered.

  • THIS WAS GREAT

  • Ok sure ...... But some of those things have nothing to do with the traditions of the Winter Solstice which is what we are talking about

  • @Godusesamac I've admitted that in my previous comments lol.

  • @Godusesamac I'm not wrong. Stole was the wrong word to use. Borrowed would be a better term, which was Christians did and I granted you that. You seem to ignore that.

  • I usually says x-mas instead, but anyway, my christian friends are like "Don't say that! It's x-ing out the lord's name. Jesus is the reason for the season!" I facepalm and then show them this video. :)

    I'm also an atheist

  • @Godusesamac Your comprehension is flawed because I admitted stole was a very blunt word and agreed with you.

  • For the Egyptians, the birth of the sun was in the zodiac of virgo (the virgin) which was harvest time. The death of the sun was the beginning of the winter solstice, and 3 days later it "resurrected". This was cause for celebration because the sun was now moving toward the vernal equinox (zodiac of pisces, the fish) because this is when the agricultural season began. All this revolves around agriculture and then became religion when agriculture (the original sin) was abandoned.

  • @Godusesamac I didn't say you claimed war, I said Christians. I don't know if you're a Christian. I have no problem with Christmas either, I like the weather, lights, and it's good for the economy and your ending statement is red herring because 1) I never said it would still be worshipped today if the churches didn't absorb it and 2) it means nothing outside a predominately Christian society.

  • @Godusesamac Oh, the many claims of atheist trying to take Christmas away from Christians and "war on Christmas" really being war on Christianity, any questioning of Christianity is a "war" them. Atheists are sick of Christians trying to claim a holiday as if they made everything about it when most of it was taken from pagans. I wonder how Christians will take Jeremiah 10:2-5 btw?

  • @Godusesamac That is why I said this is better than Zeitgeist. This is using some actual facts rather than sketchy claims and American tradition had nothing to do with the founding of Christmas. I granted you that America has changed Christmas. I don't care about the kids not caring about the pagan roots, the problem are the Christians claiming it is there holiday as if they created it and it is only for them.

  • @Godusesamac I feel you because my mom and family are Jehovah's Witness and they don't celebrate any holidays. I know a 7th Day Adventis how doesn't either but he does observed the Sabbath, he couldn't play football for his highschool team, sucks for him because he wasn't bad at it. I want Christians to at least acknowledge it's not their holiday. American tradition had nothing to do with Christmas or any other Christian Holy Day, just made it more commerialized which some Christians hate.

  • @Godusesamac Stole is a blunt word but how many know and accept that their tradition was adopted from other cultures? You know a group is up one to many notches when a minority criticizing their tradition has to explain why they put a sign up but never have to justify theirs. Not all are very vain but a lot are.

  • 3 people don't believe in Santa Claus.

  • @Godusesamac Paganism is a religious component. Christians need to be brought down a noch and humbled about their stolen beliefs.

  • A lot better than Zeitgeist.

  • that's why I like the German word ''Weihnachten'' better than the English Christmas...

Weihnachten means sth like Holy Night and doesn't have to be connected to Jesus.. you can use it for 'Chirstmas' no matter what you hold sacred in this night...

  • a thousand star for you...

    ... and happy holiday!

  • @DiscoveringReligion i sweat to medusa, if you had a tv/talk show, id watch the shit out of it

  • What santa doesn't exist! jk as a christian I wasn't really surprised or offended by the video. I never really believed in santa claus, chrismas, or easter because i knew it was a pagan holidy and it doesn' say any where in the bible to celebrate christmas or easter. Just to clarify (which I think he did) it's not that christianity is paganism, it's the "christians" that put paganism in christianity. but thanks for the video @discoveringreligion

  • Wonderful video. Although there is a relationship with the sun rays behind god's heads in paintings; Sun in Latin is SOL and Son was FILIUS. They were not homophones in Latin. So there would be no word confusion in Rome. The words only sound the same in Germanic languages.

  • Nice...Spread this around to your Christian relatives folks.

  • Look up definitions for "holiday" and "celebrate." They mark some event or person. What event or persons do atheists celebrate that day? None. Get some intellectual spine, atheists. If you are an atheist, there is no reason to celebrate superstition. Celebrating the birthdays of Hitchens, Dawkins, Darwin, or Hawking makes more sense. Maybe you are all those atheists who regularly attend church--the same as celebrating Christmas.

  • One superstition replaced another. Christmas remains a holiday celebrating superstition. Atheists have intellectually rejected all superstition, but recall those warm fuzzies of childhood holidays and fail to make that leap across emotion. Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, Hindus, and communists, (the preponderant majority of humans) do not celebrate Christmas. Nonbelievers need not celebrate it either. Why not celebrate Darwin Day?

  • @grubelsucht

The Solstice and Equinox are very real events. There is no reason to abandon the celebration of these events merely because of the mythological vestiges that have been passed on throughout the centuries. I am secure in my atheism and Im definitely not a closet church attendee; however, I am not so jaded as to abandon the celebrations of my ancestors, and deny my children the same enjoyment I had as a child, because my atheism tells me "there is no reason to celebrate superstition."

  • @DiscoveringReligion You too provide an example of emotional attachment to a religious holiday. Having a Christmas tree (yes it has origins in pagan religion) is the same as having a cross in your house, both symbolize religion.

  • @DiscoveringReligion

Thank you for this revised version, it is much more presentable.

  • @DiscoveringReligion, If you knew what the Illuminati was, you'd know that they are the ones promoting Christmas because it's a PAGAN RITUAL. But because most Christians are lukewarm, they don't read their Bibles:

"Thus saith the LORD, LEARN NOT THE WAY OF THE HEATHEN...for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not."-Jeremiah 10:2-4

  • Jesus wasn't even born in December. Where are the Bible verses to back your claims anyway?

p4p1l0v4 was right, you are not discovering religion, you are discovering culture.

Either you are set on targeting Christianity or because you as an atheist must convince people there is no God, you should do some more research about the Illuminati. They are the ones who have you blindsided. See for yourself:

"Illuminati and its infiltration of Christianity"

    watch?v=UzK3QeEWEYs

  • @DiscoveringReligion i agree.. as a converted atheist and living in a harsh cold winter in china i will celebrate christmas. everyday im looking forward for the day when the daytime is getting longer and longer slowly but surely, day by day... and christmas day marks that day!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!

  • @grubelsucht yeah and also stop reading fiction, watch movies and go to theatre....

I'm a die hard Atheist AND still enjoy Christmas.

  • @puckman Literature strives to represent truth through symbolism. The symbolism of Christmas represents atavistic superstition and myth and impedes grasp of truth.

  • @grubelsucht There is a big difference between ideology and cultural tradition. It's only superstition if you believe it.

As a non-theist, the holidays represent to me, a grateful celebration of family, friends and of the very fortunate life that I live. The traditional imagery, passed down to me by my Cristian Ancestors, though fictional, is still beautiful and belongs as much to me, as it does to any believer.

  • @rhyfelur You and all the above provide perfect examples of rationalizing your emotion-ridden behavior. As little reason exists to celebrate the vernal equinox as to celebrate changes in moon phases. "Celebrate" and "holiday" refer to commemorate real events or people. If you are an atheist, you still have that emotional attachment to Christianity and its preceding superstition. You don't need Christmas to celebrate your family. Do you have a cross in your house, "traditional imagery"?

  • @grubelsucht No I dont have a cross displayed in my house, maybe in a box in the attic, whats your point? I also have a Ouija board up there, does that make me an occultist?

Crosses, pentagrams, its all the same to me. Symbols only have the meaning that you assign to them. Your fear of Christian symbols tells me that you are probably insecure in your beliefs. When you are more comfortable, hopefully you will realize that they mean nothing than that lots of people believe stupid shit..

  • @rhyfelur So now you're angry because I don't do xmas. It is one thing to believe and another to act on those beliefs in the world against the pressures of conformity. Like it or not, xmas is a religious holiday, Christian for the last 1400 years so by now they've forced the celebration of it into your brain, but you celebrate it like eating hamburger without the meat. Just don't call it a holiday or a celebration. Enjoy your days off. Conform if you must, tell your children sweet lies.

  • @grubelsucht Wow, where do you get "angry" or that I care whether you celebrate anything? I have just been trying to explain to you that the holidays mean whatever you want them to mean, but obviously you don't get that and I really don't care anymore, so u go fight the pressures of conformity, or whatever....I'm gonna go wrap some gifts..)

  • @rhyfelur Enjoyed your response. If you are solipsistic and live only inside your head, I agree. I've long won the battle against conformity, and one such as you might find me as odd as I find you conformist, but here we are communicating thanks to the history of a long string of nonconformist odd people, many burned at the stake and tormented for swimming against the stream of human thought. I hope atheism completely eclipses religion in my lifetime (and without xmas). Adieu.

  • @grubelsucht Enjoyed yours as well. Don't mistake my attitude for denial or apathy, (Solipsism would be a real stretch). I simply don't believe that religion can be defeated by an angry frontal attack. That approach only strengthens the popular belief that God = peace & happiness and that Atheism = hatred and bitterness. I believe that religion will eventually be defeated by showing people that love, kindness, compassion, etc, are inherently human traits, and do not require a God.

  • @grubelsucht

Did you even watch the video?

  • @Fastlan3 Your accusation (yes, of course!) makes no clear point. Atheists demonstrate cognitive dissonance by celebrating xmas. It is easier to change one's beliefs that to put that change into practice in the real world. Religion forced xmas on the people just as it did xtianity. Xtianity represents barbarism, war, the Inquisition, the Crusades, and other evils as much as family gatherings and happy times. New ideas always shock those asked to reevaluate false beliefs and behavior. Bye.

  • @grubelsucht

    Bye.

  • @Fastlan3 Yes. We will consider, argue, and resolve another matter of world consequence in the future.

  • @grubelsucht nothing wrong with having a day of sharing gifts and being with family regardless of the reasons.

  • @kronksworld Then neither is anything wrong with allowing your children Easter Egg hunting nor sending them to Christian schools (which is where Stalin's Jewish parents sent him for an education). Nor going to church for the social life it offers. Nor with having a crucifix or a picture of Jesus on your wall. Perhaps it would be cool if atheists could declare December 27 as Jean Meslier day and exchange gifts while taking the day off to celebrate reason and science.

  • @grubelsucht

are only lies, ( atheist came to change the human history, for promoting atheism)

  • @grubelsucht because our government didnt put it in a bible

  • Great video! Thanks for taking the time to make it.

  • ones agen you word of wisdom are put forth beautifully my hats of to you one more

i can not wait to see more

    Merry chrimass to all

    Blessed BE )O(

  • I always thought Xmas as more of year end party. Kind of like my weekends, but which comes after a hard worked year.

  • Is this the same video as the xmas card from an atheist? It seems very similar.

  • @tml4873

Please read the video description. =)

  • @DiscoveringReligion Ah, I see. I just watched the other one a couple of hours ago, and thought they both appeared as new at around the same time. Probably doesn't help that I am on my fourth drink this evening.

  • I have detested the Christmas and Easter holiday for decades, mainly because of Christian lies and hypocrisy.

One line in this video, "The solstice and equinox belong to the Earth", has made me reevaluate my thinking. I think I will finally be able to again celebrate these two special times of the year for what they truly are, and to ignore the religious hijacking the Christians have perpetrated...

    ...thanks!

  • @bushputz

I am glad you share my point of view. =) Yes, if you think about it, these events have existed long before humans could have given them symbolic meaning. But I think its still important to celebrate somethings, for its part of our humanity and it brings us closer with the Earth. Words and labels are human inventions. It doesnt matter what we call Christmas, the only thing that is important is what this date represents, and it certainly isnt Christ's birth!

  • @bushputz

I'm actually very touched by your comment. I hope that you enjoy these special times of the year with renewed vigor. They haven't exactly rung my bells in recent years either, but it's a damn good excuse for a celebration and some good will and all of that kind of thing.

May God go with you (my invisible pink unicorn told me to add that bit...)

  • @bushputz, There are two sides to every story, Christmas is NOT a Christian Holiday, the media just portrays it that way & all "so called" Christians that don't even read their Bibles go along with the lie:

"Thus saith the LORD, LEARN NOT THE WAY OF THE HEATHEN...for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not."-Jeremiah 10:2-4

    watch?v=vpQt4LlWqPQ

  • this is the same as Christmas Card from an atheist!

  • Wow, someone makes a suggestion and you edit and make a new video! Much respect to you. Very glad I subbed!

  • @EMTRUE

    Thanks, I try. =)

  • Great Video, I posted it on my facebook it has a few christians on it. See if my friends de-friend me lol.

  • @apple2018 that is always fun

  • @apple2018

I posted it on my personal facebook page as well, and I got absolutely no responses. Maybe I should have made a note of my prior friend count. lolol

  • @apple2018 Oh god, I've gotten in so many ridiculous arguments over the videos I've posted on facebook. And most of them are just informational videos like this or some about evolution, not even about debating religion.

    People suck.

  • @MonsterEnergyMan: I have never had an argument over you tube videos however, they just question why the you tube video I just reply It's a long story, I would be afraid to leave out any details that could make me sound crazy."

  • @apple2018 i also post my Atheist beliefs on my FB, it drives Christians crazy. They always post god bless this and god bless that but the second I express my beliefs all hell breaks loose. Much love to all my Atheists... and to everybody else whose not : )

  • Easter always brings back to me the immortal words of a very wise man:

"...Interesting to note they celebrate Easter the same way we do; commemorating the death and resurrection of Jesus by telling our children a giant bunny rabbit, left chocolate eggs in the night... Why those two things?... Why not ‘Goldfish left Lincoln Logs in your sock drawer?...

'Mummy, I woke today and there was a Lincoln Log in me sock drawer!'.

    'That's the story of Jesus'."

Bill Hicks, RIP. We miss you.

  • i like this version better

  • Awesome Job !!! -It was educational as well as done respectfully. I will be posting on Facebook.

  • Great vid...thanks for the upload..peace be with :)

  • I hate Christmas... And the food sucks!

  • @xCrowMagnuSx

Hey there, yes I was aware my explanation of the seasons was not entire accurate, but as xCrowMagnuSx said, it would have been very difficult for me to illustrate that and the additional explanation needed in order to explain these additional details would have put me over the time limit. However, thanks for the clarification.

  • Wait, so Santa never originally wore blue and was changed to wearing Red as part of a Coke-Cola campaign?

  • Gawd, how can you like Christmas... you don't speak for me. I hate it.

  • This is a beautiful video. That is why I'm a subscriber.

  • Roy Zimmerman wishes everyone a merry christmahanuramakadonakwanzaa!

  • Thanks so much for this! I shall share it!

  • great video, but the astronomy part is wrong. the earth's axis is tilted by a constant 23.45 degrees. the seasons occur because diffferent parts of the earth are oriented toward the sun at different times. it doesn't tilt and not tilt like the video shows.

  • To think, a tradition that may perhaps go back even before we were homo sapiens, started by a few tribe's members 10,000-100,000+ years ago is still being celebrated to this very day by most cultures in some form. Probably began as barely-vocal ape-folk saying, "Let's all get together close to the Little Fire, to bring and share food we've found, to enjoy the fact that at least this many of us survived the Chill of the loss of the Big Fire in the Sky, and to fuck like animals!"

  • 07:06 Boobs!

  • great video with good facts about the holidays

  • You FOOL! The fact that Christianity can be traced to older herecies and all of its holidays, rituals and notions are borrowed from them does NOT mean that Christianity is "just" a religion!!!one!!eleven!1!#!

How do I know?! GAWD TOLD ME SO! Now excuse me for I have to worship HIM.

  • @sapunec7854

What was that last bit at the end? Remember to set aside the keyboard before you start fapping. =)

  • @DiscoveringReligion It is the noble prayer to Cthulhu heathen! (You know? Like the Lovecraft demon-god thingy?)

  • @DiscoveringReligion

The guy is really atheist and making fun of christians.the stuff at the end is the Gods' from horror books. In the book, some people worship theses even even they don't care about them.

  • @vain911

hehe, Yeah I could tell he was joking. Most Christians don't say "GAWD". =)

  • @vain911 Yeah, he'll be sorry when the stars are right!

  • @DiscoveringReligion I think sapunec7854's commentary is from Necronomicon, by H.P. Lovecraft. It's a spell to summon Cthulhu I believe.

  • 2 points:- its my understanding that santa clause is also an analogue of odin. and Constantine's roman empire was not the holy roman empire.

  • isn't this the same as the "christmas card from an atheist" vid?

  • @goemon9378

There were a few requests to re-edit the video without the atheist introduction so its more accessible to Christians, as they would be tempted to turn off the video right away if they believed the video was an attack on their beliefs. Its pretty much the same, but I included about 20-30% new information.

  • Sol invictus, the undefeated sun., Much stronger a symbol then a man dying on a cross.

  • I would guess most modern theists would find the "we stopped the sun by our rituals"-thing extremely silly, which i find ironic, since it is a perfect example of post hoc ergo propter hoc, which also modern theists apply so frequently.

  • I agree with a lot of the other commenters, some sources would be good! Also, Easter rightly changes date because the gospels record (I use the term loosely) the crucifixion as being around Passover (which particular day in the festival depends on taking Synoptic/John account as 'gospel'). Passover begins on the night of a full moon after the vernal equinox, and as that's all Christians have to go on, it should change date but isn't a direct theft from pagan rituals (but yes, still the equinox).

  • Enjoy your videos. Conversion to Christianity must have prolonged Constantine's life....110 years! (4:38)

  • @phyrmer

Oops =) That should have been 272*. I made the correction. Thanks for the heads up.

  • Interesting video. I think your video could be improved by including sources. What are the pre-Christian sources that demonstrate these similarities (i.e., what primary texts)? And if only later sources are avaialble, it it not also possible that the mystery religions may have been adapted to be similar to Christian traditions and not just the other way around? I look forward to your response.

  • @slotstik Pretty sure most pre-christian mythologies were written down or if not we see evidence of them in surviving art from those cultures.

  • Zeitgeist Reborn, eh?

  • @Klingschor i had similar thoughts. great vid none the less

  • @Klingschor

Well, I wouldn’t go as far as to say that, for I am not making the same astrological assertions as the Zeitgeist film. This video only serves to demonstrate the widely understood fact that the pagan celebrations of the solstice and equinox, as well as the imagery that surround them, we stolen and/or manipulated by the early Christian Church.

  • @DiscoveringReligion

I was being somewhat facetious :P

  • The image you first showed about evergreen trees was actually of mistletoe, which is a parasitic plant that generally grows on evergreens, but is not an evergreen itself.

  • @Godlessons

I was using the term "evergreen" in the general sense, to refer to any and all plants that maintain their green color during the winter months.

    Define: evergreen

"a plant having foliage that persists and remains green throughout the year."

  • awesome video!!!! very informative, very real!!!! happy saturnalia to u 2!!!!

  • awesome video!!!! very informative, very real!!!! happy saturnalia to u 2!!!!

  • great video but it's pretty much the same as the "Christmas card from an athiest video with a few minor differences. but all in all very well done...

  • Amazing presentation and research as always.

  • Comment removed

  • Yes, this is definitely more "Christian friendly" and I'm sending it to every Christian I know lol

  • Comment removed

  • Not everyone likes the season, though. God knows I hate it with a passion and it has nothing to do with its being Christian or not. I hate how everyone acts like they care for a couple of days when they really do not give a flying a fuck.

  • BACK THE SHIT UP!!!

You're telling me that Christmas is a holiday? BLEW MY MIND!!

  • I love the video - just shows you that tradition=bullshit. I am a contrarian to the max when it comes to celebrating or acknowledging special days . . . I don't even celebrate my birthday. These celebrations of days is strange to me, I consider it a waste of time and money. How can you decide your mental state based on a particular day of the year? That's what I find strange . . . a day is just another day which follows another day - there's nothing special about any of them.

  • Saturnalia its not Roman, Ancient Romans took this festival from Greeks , it become know as Roman tradition because Romans were the superpower back then , the christmass tree was ancient greek tradition, they use to to cover olive trees with red and white pouches foul of seeds ,to thank gods and mother earth. Everything on this planet started from greeks!

  • @Pilaeus

Thanks for the clarification, but the allotted 15 minutes per video did not allow me to trace this festival that far back in time. The Greeks worshiped Cronus, whose Roman name is Saturn, hence the term "Saturnalia". I wanted to tie in the fact the Holy Roman Empire was responsible for merging pagan traditions with the Christian faith. However, much of the Bible (Genesis) was derived from Sumerian and Egyptian mythologies, but not so much from Greece.

  • @Pilaeus DR said most of it, but I'll say the rest:

No. Yes, the romans got it from the greeks, but no, everything did not start with the greeks. It started with Egypt. Egypt is the birthplace of writing (before sumerian cuniform, there were egyptian clay glyphs, used to mark offerings and identify their origins using pictographs), physical mathematics (the Trigenometry used to build the pyramids FAR predates anything classic greek), and even the Solstice festival, even using a Palm tree.

  • @Pilaeus Thank so much for your answer and this video, i will send to you a private message explaning the origin of the festival, however, Bible is not historical document, and the Hellenic civilazation started before classical greece, with respect, Orestes.

  • @Pilaeus You've just had the origins of the festival explained to you. It originated in egypt long before Greece ever became a significant entity in the ancient world, even before the discovery of bronze. The greeks adapted the festival from egyptian, as they did many egyptian traditions and inventions, and architectural mathematics.

Civilization began LONG before the greeks, and if not for them, would have been spread by some other ancient nation.

  • Your videos are awesome but I would love it if you posted some references. Also, you keep mentioning Dec. 25th as Jesus's birthday but that is never stated in the Bible and many Christians argue this. With that being said, how do you rebut that?

  • @MegaAnitoon

I mentioned in the video that in the 4th Century Pope Julius I was the first to claim Jesus was born on Dec 25th. He claimed to have come across a census document, but in reality he was pressured into making this claim in order to officially establish the Christian holy day and thereby incorporating the pagan traditions of Saturnalia and the celebrations of those honoring the birth of Mithras into the Christian faith. I'll go back and look up my sources for you.

  • @DiscoveringReligion Ok thanks.

  • @DiscoveringReligion Ok thanks. Also, where can I find -or what do you recommend for that matter- a trusted site on the study of religion? You seem to know so much and I would love to know the sites you use for your videos.

  • @MegaAnitoon It is true that once you start studying religions a certain pattern emerges that begins to resemble as if they all took main figures and dates from each other and simply re-wrote to make the symbols be more suitable for their cultural tradition. Perhaps Discovering Religion might refer you to certain books as sources. There are plenty of videos on YouTube, as well. You can start from "The God Who Wasn't There" on youtube.

  • @woxvagado That's true but even "The God Who Wasn't There" was under scrutiny for false information.

  • "...billions of years before humans even existed."

Do you mean the preface "Homo" as in human or as in Homo Sapiens?

Because all apes with a prefix "Homo" are technically human. Either way, you would have been correct when you said that.

  • @Aresftfun

Well, billions of years ago primates did not exist. That statement might have been a little misleading with the video I showed, but I couldn't find anything better to illustrate my point. The Earth has been experiencing the Equinox and Solstices since the formation of the planet, 4.5 billion years ago. Mammals did not become prevalent on the earth until the dinosaurs went extinct 65 millions years ago, and the earliest signs of human evolution is said to have begun ~8 million yrs ago.

  • @Aresftfun with only 10 million years from our decent from the tress to now, it's little matter when speaking about billions of years. :)

    ;d

  • Merry saturnalia?

  • That was one of the best video's I've ever seen on YouTube. Thank you for all the effort you put in to it.

  • @AloofPeregrine Hell, the very BASIC belife systems of wiccans is "An it harm none, do what ye will". The religion is largely based on tolerance and respect for people and the world, despite magical beliefs. I wish more religious folk were pagan!

  • This could be a fun one to post on Facebook for all my xtian family members. I'm trying to start a meme myself by renaming Christmas to "Mythmas". If anyone likes it, feel free to try it out for size. MERRY MYTHMAS!

  • @AquaticApe1 i will continue your "tradition" :)

    ;d

  • your videos are amazing, full of info thanks :)

  • The war on Christmas is over. This video wins!

  • Thank you for the longer video. Love the professional feel and atmosphere of your videos.

  • Amazing video! Pagan traditions always had more appeal to me than Christian ones, because they have stronger basis in nature and less fearing/egotistical mythology. It's actually one reason I don't call myself an anti-theist. I actually like the ideas of pagenism and wicca even though I don't believe in them! I see it as more interesting pieces of fiction than the bible. Same with greek and norse mythology.

  • Wouldn't it be awesome if him and Aron Ra got together and did a 'Discovering Religion' segment?

  • YAY, more vids.

  • @frembo1 YAY, discoveringreligion put up a new vid. I'm happy ..you too?

  • @likeroby There was no sarcasm in my previous comment, I appreciate the Discovering Religion series.
