I was 12 when I saw this at the theater. The movie was not great, but the actual star of the film was the Enterprise itself. In 1979 the dry dock scenes were the high point of the movie. People gasps when the pod closed in on the dock and everybody got their first views of the sleek new lines of the ship. It was really something in 79.

I have an reason for this movies slow pace. They were planning a tv series called star trek phase 2 and this movies plot was that of the pilot episode. Then close encounters and star wars came out and were huge hits so they canned the show and they rewrote the pilot's script and gave them an extra 15 million and Robert Wise, and what we got was this

Basically V'ger reprogrammed them to go forth across the universe, searching for knowledge that would lead back to the creator. I'm not a fan of star trek but I definitely respect the series. It broke ground by being the first televisions series to have an interracial couple, it went into subject that people weren't comfortable with at the time but still needed to be discussed and did it in a dignified manor. It's been on for decades and I love how passionate it can make people. I've never sat down to watch it and I probably won't anytime soon, but I know enough about it to say it's a great series.

You know I reember how boring this movie was...but I forgot what a total ass Kirk was in it...even more so than usual. Why is it that Star Trek captains often turn into reckless murdering fools in the movies? I know Kirk was always a bit gung ho but still. As Mr Plinkett pointed out the same thing happened to Jean Luc as well in the generations movies. He just became an inconsiderate arsehole. I suppose at least Kirk has a bit of a cry when he ejects Spocks body into space later...but still...
