  • Hello, I have some basic questions about the Chinese language, both written and spoken.

    1. I know that the script is logographic (one symbol for one word). Then, how would they write a name like "Larry Mulholland"? Would they get similar words and put them together (sort of like 3 words "Layer Emo Holland")?

    2. In your opinion, is learning to speak Chinese (not read, but speak) easy? One of my friends told me it's not that bad to speak, but reading is hard.

  • @MonogrammedMarxist All forms of Chinese language, reading, writing, and speaking is very difficult if you are not Far East Asian.

  • 其实你中文说得很差。

  • They dont speak strange putonghua, they speak Cantonese which is a more ancient language than Mandarin, so, its not strange putong hua.

  • @VoVikMakaR Unfortunately, I disagree. based on the history of China, the language used today known as Mandarin is derived more closely from the Han Chinese, of the North. The Han were the ones whom reffed to themselves as "Long de chuan ren" (descendants of the dragons). However, during the Han dynasty the people of the South in the Beifang region were actually not even a nation. They were actually many wild "savage", "cavemen", "barbaric" tribal types of people referred to often as "Nan Manzi"

  • @BlackUniGryphon south is not Beifang, beifang is north

  • @BlackUniGryphon Linguistics-wise, that's completely false. Mandarin is well known to be the variety of Chinese that has changed the most, dropping final consonants, and palatalization. If you read ancient Chinese poems or rime tables, very little will rhyme because of sound shifts and dropped endings. In Cantonese, Min Nan, and Wu, however, many of the rhymes will be preserved. Also, borrowings in Korean and Japanese show, clearly, that the lingua franca of China was far from how it is today.

  • @VoVikMakaR

If you read about the 3 Kingdoms Period (San Guo Yan Yi) the area of the Nanfang where the Nanfang people are originally from, and refer to the map you can find large chunks of land which weren't even part of "China" yet in the Nanfang area.Altho' I understand it upsets Nanfang people to be called "Nan Manzi Descendants" it's merely only an aspect of history.

There are also large differences in the skulls of Nanfang & Beifang people, the Nanfang people have mixed with Han.

  • @VoVikMakaR Duh

  • @BlackUniGryphon duh? is it a sign of agreement? a helpless sound coming out from u?

  • when americans speak chinese...its sounds like they are drunk

  • ni de zhongwen shi hen hao

  • isnt it shallow to judge southerners by their accent and their diet...most of them dont speak mandarin anyway...

  • Sichuan accent?

  • 挺可爱 lol

  • haha ,,,,

  • Very Good Chinese! and you are very sexy, too bad you've already married , or I would give a try :)

  • 哈哈,看身材就知道北方男人更适合你啦

  • Western men dump their wife after her body turns fat....

Chinese men are more traditional and loyal to their wife....

At least in people around my family...

  • I dunno... My dad stayed w/my mom even tho' she'd get fat & loose it many times. She actually left him when she was chubby, but he still wanted her to come back.

Then, he dated a big chubby chick for a while.

His current wife is rather scrawny tho', and they live in different houses.

  • however they cheat (chinese) when wift gets ugly western less in comparison or just straight out like u said dump..thats at least better than cheat

  • wooow

    Your Chinese is so good

very good for a white girl :)

are you living in China now??or you learned it by yourself?

  • I lived in China many times... But, I don't think my Chinese is good.

    Yes, i did learn myself.

It's easier to understand when I hear it, but harder to speak it.

I can only read maybe 50+ hanzi. I studied much more than that, but it's hard to remember.

  • Yeah, Guangdong language is very difficult. I gave up trying because it changes too much, and in all my books and courses i paid for there was no universal standard.

But, there's so many kinds of Chinese ethnic groups.

I amused that Southern Chinese are mostly descended from the ancient Nan-manzi wild tribes and mixed with Han Chinese from the Han Dynasty.

    But, I'm not sure.
