  • so if honey is 80% sugar and 20% water, does that mean you could create it's chemical equivalent with just sugar and water in your kitchen? or is there some chemical reaction that only happens in bee hives that would prevent one from achieving this?

  • I have some tupelo honey. It's so buttery.

  • An egg is not "manufactured", as in turned into something else entirely distinct from its raw materials, the way honey is.

  • I hope I don't get eaten alive by all my fellow good eats fans... but are eggs not food produced by animals?

  • @Seinneam i think it means that it's the only food that's MADE by animals. most foods come FROM animals, but honey is the only one that's "manufactured."

  • What is that tune at 3:30?

  • 1 Person dislikes this episode?! How can you dislike Good Eats?! What's wrong with learning the science behind food and cooking?

  • "As much personality as a Dragnet rerun"

    That made me ROFL.

  • i know a bee keeper

and ive tryed cut comb honey and i like it better then store honey

  • There's a tupelohoydottorgg site that tells about 'why' Tupelo is so pricey.

  • 1 dislike tried all the recipes and failed.

  • It's not raw if it's cut with a hot knife...

  • yay 1st comment

  • The difference between manufacturing of food and excreting food is that there is an external process that the -manufactured- food goes through in order to be edible. Milk is produced to feed babies, but it only goes through one process to be edible.

  • I recall reading somewhere that the queen is usually given a small dot or stripe of (non-toxic I hope) white paint so that the keepers can easily find her. Looking at Alton's footage of the colony, I can see why....

  • 4:48 another "Like the Hat" moment.

  • bee backwash! EEWW ;) (tastiest backwash that I've ever incountered)

  • Tupelo honey is rare? That's odd...considering it's the only kind i usually get. Hmm...

  • Has he done one on mashed potatoes?

  • yes, its titled spuds i think.

  • Check out wikipedia for a list of all episodes and what they feature, it's really helpful!

  • I do not believe that honey is produced "for us" by bees. This would imply that bees consciously produce for humans. Now I am not saying bees are stupid but I just don't think they can do this. Also, if they produce honey for us, why do we get stung so much trying to get it. Lastly, I never heard Alton exclaim it was produced "for us" in the show, only that it was produced period, I am refering to the show description.

  • Yes, I found that a bit strange about the description too. Although I didn't take it quite as litterlly as them having a conscious. I thought more allong the lines of: they don't really produce it for themselves the way chickens produce lay eggs to make babies, and cows make milk to feed their calves. But then I remembered that they produce honey for their larvae, so. . . .

  • the production of honey is a very facinating science when bee's go around to gather nectar from flowers they go back to tey hive and mix the nectar with their enzyme or spit then they ferment it in waxy combs fo a while then its food for the queen

  • All hail the awesome Alton Brown!

  • AB should do an episode on edible flowers.

  • Oh, but he has! I guess it just depends on what you consider a flower.

  • thought only super models did that ha

  • that was tacky, AB.

  • Yeah, picking on one of the most privileged and superficial rungs of society who do nothing constructive and still make sums of money larger than we could ever dream of is really unfair.

  • its not that he was "picking on" supermodels per se - it was the corollary insinuation that women with eating disorders (e.g., bulimia) are vapid and vain, which in turn minimizes the complexity and seriousness of these illnesses. But as I stated, it was a tacky throwaway line. meh.

  • "This is one that I typically like to eat on the weekends..." *laugh*

  • @Bellassett I'm thinking "Little Shop of Horrors" here. I bet he hurries home on the days his wife fixes carnations for dinner. XD

  • This botanists description of Bee's sounds alot like. . .Men in general.

"They practice flower Fidelity. Oh, but they'll take their pollen where they can get it"

Ironic all honey bee's are female.

  • The botanist reminds me of magic school bus!! Nice..

  • The botanist in this episode the least awkward-seeming consultant in all of Good Eats I think.

  • "Like the hat?" YES AB!!!!

  • Isn't it proboscis, not probiscis?

  • "Couldn't help but notice what lovely pollen sacks you have on you." hahaha I love love love AB.

  • I love honey, love alton, and I LOVE GOOD EATS!!!!!

  • I love those straw bees.

  • alton is my favorite person. this is the best show ever created. with another like the hat moment.

  • Another "Like the Hat" Moment.

  • I love honey....best stuff I ever had was in Australia...a type from the Leatherwood tree. Good stuff!

  • this is the first time ab had a botonist on his show! yaya!
