if you dont get it you should stick to your mainstream music. its different, ahead of its time, and a favorite of many you will never understand...and its a quarter of a dozen monkeys wildly banging their instruments (yeah, that probably blew your mind)
@boognish1975 Strangely enough, you are one of few people I've ever heard say negative things about Don Cab. Probably because it's harmless, unassuming instrumental jam rock.
can anyone comment on how long these dudes spend playing together working up to these performances? how many hrs a day/wk. just to wrap ma head around how great their chemistry is. thanks!
I don't know the band personally and I don't really know their body of work very well but I can tell you from playing professionally for 14 years that they probably don't put in all that much "practice" in anymore.
The hardcore skills you learn that really stick come more from playing out in front of people then locking yourself up in a garage somewhere.
Bands that tend to practice a lot are usually younger musicians. It is good and necessary. After a while however you don't really...cont..
...cont...you don't really need to practice because a realization sets in that a certain level of spontaneity keeps things fresh. Younger bands usually want to display their skills and really tend to focus on making sure they come across the way that they want to.
Later on you grow naturally more comfortable in your own skin and there isn't such an emphasis on being "perfect". So I would have to say that they just probably spend more of their time playing out expressing themselves.
i can hear Ian singing though he has no mic. he does all his singing with his guitar and his body. sometimes i can't believe my eyes when i see vids like this, in which they were actually a three piece...
This is the best recording I've seen of these guys. I saw them in Nashville on this tour...they were in the process of breaking up...what a strange show. Damon Che picked up a monitor at one point and almost threw it across the stage...like I said, what a strange show.
Well, just as I was thinking... The songs featured in this gig are slightly different from the "American Don" versions, and that is because this show is from october `99.
I`m sure that they were still working on the tunes. Remember that they break up the band in feb/march `00, and "Am. Don" was edited on oct `00.
obviously, the tunes got better as the tour moved forward. Some bootlegs from ealy `00 are truly amazing, and the songs are closer to the record version.
They couldn't have broken up in feb/ march of '00 because I saw them twice in July of '00 in Iowa City, then in K.C. Mo. the next night with Dianogah opening up for them for the whole tour. I think they broke up that winter though.
they broke up close to the end of that tour. I saw them in Jan. of 01, about a week before. They got into a wreck, and broke up on the side of the road. The whole story is online, somewhere, written by that guy who was with them.

I suppose that's a compliment given that 6 monkeys have 24 limbs with opposable thumbs and this trio only have 6 :)

@Colenelly
Don Cab aren't a jam band, everything is pretty tightly rehearsed.

@ourigin They are referred to as jam a lot. I know Don Cab is well rehearsed... thanks

Ian used multiple looping pedals and built the songs up using layers of guitar loops. I miss this line-up...
