Sure is satirical: give all you have to the man with a diamond ring… You'll get a ticket to heaven just because nonetheless. I'm glad I wasn't the only one somewhat troubled by the lyrics, but loved the song so much to believe either truth! I think Mark Knopfler could be 'the man who sure can sing' if he wanted to, and many of us would probably give all we have, too. :-)

This song is a humorous commentary. . . The Man (with the golden ring--he sure can sing) sells "Tickets" to heaven and we "give what we can" to the point of not being able to pay our bills. But we can ride all the way to Paradise. . .Got to love Mark's style, wit and pure genius!
