  • Why are you using soapy water on the stone and not oil?

  • @TopGear6666

It works well as a lubricant and also helps to clean the stone. I have found it to be just as good as oil.

  • that's a sexy lookin knife. not gonna lie

  • Also, that trick you suggested, coloring the portion you want to file down with black marker to see wha it'll look like when it is done, gotta say... Very clever, I thought the shaped the brass guard, when I saw that is was marker I was convinced I could use this trick.

  • @JesusFuckingChrist84

Its a neat little trick huh?...lol

And as long as the background is really dark ...then it works well.

  • Working to the tempo of good music? Finishing with stones and files?

I do ALL those things, I thought I was weird. ^_^

  • @JesusFuckingChrist84

lol...I think we are all a bit weird...that is what makes us all

    so darn interesting ;-)

  • I've seen many knife makers use a file up until the edge is just about finished... Is there any particular reason you used only the stone?

  • @MrEhud77

I have used files in the past. With this knife I used the stone right at the end so the steel is truly flat all the way along the blade. It was mu first try this way...I try different methods sometimes to see how things turn out.

You never know unless you try right?

  • @RDPproject very true! I was just curious as you stated that you didn't want to mess up with the belt grinder

  • @MrEhud77

Yeah...on a belt...it can be totally ruined with a simple slip of the hand.

  • Oright mate,

I got me a lovely swedish forest axe, the steel is spot on 58-59 Rockwell, I wanted to sharpen it but need to buy a good stone but am a bit short on funds.

Could i use a good quality wet/dry glasspaper? and sharpen by hand, I guess a problem is the risk of cutting myself, but I wondered if this would be any good, or would you deffo reccomend saving for a good Japaneese water stone like my poser mate has! LOL!

    Loving the vids man!

  • @switchest26

Yes you can use high grit Wet & Dry sandpaper. As long as the axe is not blunt.

Because that would take way to much time and effort.

What you do is....basically 'Top IT Up' every so often.

Go look at my video "Knifecraft - Sharpening a Convex edge"

  • @RDPproject Ahh great...cheers for the Tips!... \Thankfully my axe has only been used for 1 days trip, cutting Beech, and its still nice after cutting hard wood!

Will have a butchers at your Sharpening vid!

    Take it easy mate!

  • @switchest26

The way I do it in that video is how you do an axe aswell. When you get a stone...then you sharpen the normal way. With the paper you dont want to cut towards or into the paper. So you move away from it with the strokes.

Start with about 500 or 600 grit and finish with 800grit. No need to go any higher as you dont want the axe edge to be to fine as it needs to be able to handle tough wood without chipping.

To find high grit sand paper, go to an Auto shop / Auto Paint supplier.

  • pretty cool tunes they are to mate.

respect for you patience and quality of workmanship. mates go made at me for taking my time, i say thats why you ask me to do jobs and your misses calls you a sellotape engineer lolol

i'm the same as you (with the brass) been wanting to do this for about 6mths but no spare £ for quality steel. then the question do i get rays knife blank and do my own handle/scales against the cost. mmmm

    stay safe pip

  • @PiPphiltitley

    Thx mate.

Yeah...money..or the lack of.....its always the problem.

  • @RDPproject shore is pal. money, religion, success ( possessions ect) are false idols. me and mate started calling them debt notes now :)

    Ukyo

  • @TheRitchiePowell

I am picking up a new Katana this weekend (old sword but new to me)

It is not a Japanese made Katana, but I think it was made in china.

It is still nice. I will need to put a new Tsuba on it and some new Tsuka fittings aswell. It has a Copper Habaki so i will leave that on there.

  • @RDPproject

You're going to be busy then. But I am going to make you even busier. I'll be packing and sending you the nagura stone I was talking about and a KNIFE today!

Friend of mine gave me this handmade knife made by Japanese sword smith. He messed the knife while he tried to sharpen it....he bought new one (rich guy!?) and gave me this. Blade needs some re-grinding and maybe a new sheath with your skill. I'm not suitable for this.

I'm very sure you'll love it!

  • Its looking great. Should be a very good user blade when its done.

  • @knivesandstuff

It had better be with all the work thats gone into it.

  • @RDPproject LoL.. it does seem like you put a lot of time into this one. :)

  • @knivesandstuff

Actually...no. Its just streched out a bit as I need something to do

during the loooong days of unemployment

  • @RDPproject hehe.. They way you edited it made it look like you were slaving over the sharpening stone day and night without pause.. lol.. The end result will be worth it. Hope a job turns up soon.

  • @ColinOutdoors

    Thanks mate.

Im waiting for payment for the last knife I made. Once I have that im gonna buy some steel with it and make some more I hope.

    Oh well......back to it.

  • Looking good. Is the guard going to be the same shape as if the handle were all wood or is it gong to be a bit more prominent? I'm keen to see which way you go.

  • @labrat7357
