i know how to set both flashes to commander and the camera, what i ment was do i set the power to 1/32 in camera? i noticed in your video there was a black cloth or something under the tank. do i need something like this too?
i tried this tonight with my D300s,sigma 50mm,sb600 and a sb800. i dont have triggers but i used commander mode. how do i set it up in commander mode? i also went and bought a black foam board from a arts and craft store. how do i get the background solid black? how far does the black board need to be from the tank? thanks for all your videos and step by step instructions, they are awesome.
@jp450r The further it is away from the tank, the better. If you wanted it 100% black without post-processing the image, you would have to do this outside at night time, or have a big black wall far away from the tank. For commander mode... check the instruction manual, do a Google search, or ask someone at a camera store.
always when I put something like plastic or a color of paper to ma the picture differend its starts to smell like burning. so can you just hold plasic sacks in front of you flash liccht ewhitout getting.burning?
I have Nikon D3100 and just a normal lens kit that comes with it,i want to buy a new flash but i really don't know a lot about them, can you tell me what to look for when buying a flash, and can you recommend few for me! I am mostly photographing waterfalls, and close up plants, but i would like to have flash that can be used for this splash photography and maybe for portraits! thank you in advance!
@speedfreakpsycho Check out the blog post I wrote for this video (you can find it in the video's description). I'd get an LP160 or an SB-700. SB-700 if you want to be able to remotely adjust the power using your DSLR and able to use TTL technology (automatic flash power adjustment). I never user either one of those features, so I am totally fine using the LP160, and it saves hundreds of dollars. Also one last thing - definitely get a wireless trigger.
@PhotoExtremist thank you for your fast answer, i will look into buying this LP160, anyway i just bought Hoya ND8 filter from ebay(30$), i hope it is not fake since the seller claims that his equipment is original! I read that a lot of people selling fake ones made in China, they look the same, box is the same, but the photographs are not,.. do you have experience on that? I found using 1/10 to 1 second is perfect for my streams and waterfalls,i hope that ND8 will not be too much
As a prospective photography student, I'm going to start watching your videos regularly to pick up tips and tricks before I get in school and to also expand my portfolio needed for admission :]
Hi i just took a picture of a water droplet and a surface of water but the droplet was out of focus and the surface in focus. how would you recommend getting both in focus? thanks, your video prompted me to try it out.
@drayt0n1 i would manually focus on the subject of interest (waterdrop). and then to increase the DoF, you will have to increase the F Number. Macro can be very difficult because the DoF is so shallow.
@Garacka The lens used was the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 AF-D, an exceptionally sharp cheap prime. For your camera, the equivalent would be the also very good/affordable Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II (or the 1.4 if you really need an extra 1/2stop of light for 4x the price).
@tisel10 Camera was a Nikon D300s (check his link for details), but as he said, really doesn't matter which camera, you just want something with fast/predictable shutter delay.
but it is very hard to get there especially for new channels.
although everyone is writing 'check out my channel' i think you really should do that and i do that aswell because the videos might be really good although no one is watching them.
Chuffed. I have learnt something tonight. I have always wanted to try this but based my theory on the shutter speed being key. After watching your video I feel such a dunce. Many thanks for taking the time to make. I have just subscribed to your no nonsense method of demonstrating. Good work!
I think this is absolutely brilliant. I have never tried this shot before, but am able to now. One other thing worth pointing out. If you are using a canon 5d II and take a picture with the cover on to discover which iso setting delivers the least noise (on black), I am informed it is 160 iso..... Worth a try and buys you a couple of extra stops. Well done though and thanks for sharing!

"It is a prime so it is going to be sharp" Ok, not really. To get most of the 50MMs ever built to be sharp you have to shoot it at at least f3.5. That is a very important think to note.
@capdasejb I'd totally integrate that guy in the Bill Nyeshow that makes murmur comments when a kid is explaining something. LOL "Yea..." "Really?..." "Okay..."
I'm surprised that this wouldn't cause blur considering shutter speed is so slow.. I'm a newb obviously but I would have thought that a shutter speed of 600+ would be needed for such a shot. I also know that with a flash you can't go above 200 - so interesting you can achieve such an "action" shot with 160th....
@Verbloten Remember, the shutter speed is irrelevant. It could be a whole 10 seconds if you are in a dark room. I was using 1/160th just to make sure the ambient lighting in the room wouldn't show up. The flashes freeze the motion, not the shutter speed - shutter speed has nothing to do with it in this circumstance.
@PhotoExtremist Yeah. Look at it this way - light makes you see anything, even motion. When the flash triggers, you'll only see the exact position of the object illuminated for the short period of time the flash last, not its motion.
So the camera basically takes a photograph of an image that's already frozen in time by the flash. Therefor no need for a quick shutter.
@PhotoExtremist I think the shutter speed freezes the motion not the flash... Shutter speed is relevant because if you choose a slower shutter you will get motion blur from the motion of the vegetables being dropped.
@jccaymo25 If you are using 1/160th of a second as I was, it doesn't matter in this situation. As you saw in the video, the photo comes out totally black. Maybe if you were using some EXTREMELY unrealistically powerful lights you MIGHT see some insignificant motion blur even if the SS is at 1/160th. So yeah, just keep the shutter speed at 1/160th and it will be fine. Other than that, it is irrelevant.
@Verbloten because the camera isn't collecting any light, the settings on the flashes capture a moment that is like 1 MILLIONTH of a second or something crazy like that.. there's an article on how photography like this works. yes you should have a fast shutter speed if there is enough light to capture a photo. but in situations like this, flashes are magical items.. it's really weird though.. (not sure if any of this was said in reply to your comment :p )
Hey guys i know its boring but please can you check out my photography videos on my channel. I have a original and a re edited version. I would love some feedback, thanks guys.
Goood! It's nice of your part to show us all the gear and method! Not all of the pros do that. I have a D90, Benro Tripod and 35 & 50mm F1.8. But I don't have any flash besides the camera itself. What should I do? I've tried before under the sunlight with a coin and the results were good. Also, is the 70-200mm F2.8 a good choice since it can focus as close as 1.4m and there´s a lot of zoom to play with close-ups and little details? Please answer if the question is good. Tks from Brazil
@amargnwalkr Really, who gives a shit. The tutorial is decent. If nitpicking is all you can do, lets see your videos on how to do this better. All you can do is spread smut on youtube.
@amargnwalkr Peppers might be a fruit since they have seeds and I believe that's a strong sign that something is a fruit! :) But agreed you wouldn't put peppers in your fruit salad!
@amargnwalkr BTW nice film though it shows dedication keep going dude just maybe your not for in front of camera, but you have a future behind for sure
Hey Nice tutorial, I tried a couple of your tutorials and I've got pretty amazing results. I have a canon 550d camera with a canon 50 mm f1.4 prime lens and I'm yet to buy a tripod but I have trouble deciding which ones! I have narrowed it down to 3 of them c-169m8, c-269m8 c 268OT benro tripods! Can you help me out?
@bunty7171 I can't sorry - I don't have all the model numbers of all photography products from all brands memorized! (I'm not being cocky here, but it is true, I don't know much about gear and I don't care - I am more of an ideas person.) I'd talk to a guy at a camera shop to help you out or ask on a Flickr forum, or maybe check out the tripod that I use in my equipment video because that one is one of the best I've seen so far. Don't get a cheap plastic flimsy thing.
Hey :) Thanks for your tutorials, they help out alot :) I do have a question about the video here.. Is it possible to do what you are doing without all that gear? I would like to do it, but i really don´t have that much extra gear for my camera
I'm planning to buy Yongnuo products...especially CTR-301 Wireless flash trigger and YN-467i-TTL flash, what can you say about the quality of this type of brand?
Evan, I really like the "fist into water (Anger)" shot. May I use as a drawing reference? You may check out some of my work at kelch12@deviantART Thanks for the great tutorials btw.
@kelch12 thanks for asking. yes! please show me when you are done. if it is a direct trace a little credit would be nice too if you post it on DA. it would be interesting to see this as a drawing
@PhotoExtremist Thanks, Evan. I'll let you know when it's done. It will take a while however. I'm watching you on dA as well. Your trick photography is amazing. You really have the talent in photography :) Thanks again.
@RTFILMS1000 the camera's shutter can only sync up with the flash to 1/250th (or i guess in your case 1/200th), otherwise you will get this black bar across your photos. there is an explanation of this somewhere online. Some cameras, like the Nikon D50, can sync up even at 1/4000th, but apparently they don't make most cameras like this anymore
@PhotoExtremist Some Nikon cameras synchronise up to 1/4000 - like D80, while D700, D3 and others - up to 1/8000. But you must use only Nikon flashes and SB800 or 900 as a master flash to command the rest of the Nikon flashes in the groups. Of course, at that high speed you have to raise your ISO if you shoot above f2, unless you use more than two flashes.
@RTFILMS1000 if you want faster shutter speeds with your flash you have to get external flash gun, turn on your camera's fast shutter speed sync (one of the menu options) and there you go. Without external flash, 1/200th is as fast as you can go. With Nikon, it's Auto FP, Canon - HSS and it's turned on in the flash itself. Don't know the option names for other manufacturers. Good luck
@1unisol1 Yes, you'll just have more shadow on the other half of the object is all. You could try using a reflector to maybe fill some of that in with light if it is really bothering you.
Thanks evan. Great video.

Can you help me out?
bunty7171 1 month ago
@bunty7171 I can't sorry - I don't have all the model numbers of all photography products from all brands memorized! (I'm not being cocky here, but it is true, I don't know much about gear and I don't care - I am more of an ideas person.) I'd talk to a guy at a camera shop to help you out or ask on a Flickr forum, or maybe check out the tripod that I use in my equipment video because that one is one of the best I've seen so far. Don't get a cheap plastic flimsy thing.

Sync on a D5100 is 1/250th so it would be best to keep camera exposure long and shoot with the flash to freeze the movement.

Do you know why when i turn on my integrated flash on my camera the shutter speed goes down to 200th of a second and I cant make it higher?
RTFILMS1000 2 months ago
@RTFILMS1000 the camera's shutter can only sync up with the flash to 1/250th (or i guess in your case 1/200th), otherwise you will get this black bar across your photos. there is an explanation of this somewhere online. Some cameras, like the Nikon D50, can sync up even at 1/4000th, but apparently they don't make most cameras like this anymore
PhotoExtremist 2 months ago
@PhotoExtremist Some Nikon cameras synchronise up to 1/4000 - like D80, while D700, D3 and others - up to 1/8000. But you must use only Nikon flashes and SB800 or 900 as a master flash to command the rest of the Nikon flashes in the groups. Of course, at that high speed you have to raise your ISO if you shoot above f2, unless you use more than two flashes.
wiseman1001 1 month ago
@RTFILMS1000 if you want faster shutter speeds with your flash you have to get external flash gun, turn on your camera's fast shutter speed sync (one of the menu options) and there you go. Without external flash, 1/200th is as fast as you can go. With Nikon, it's Auto FP, Canon - HSS and it's turned on in the flash itself. Don't know the option names for other manufacturers. Good luck

Is this possible with only one flash?
1unisol1 2 months ago
@1unisol1 Yes, you'll just have more shadow on the other half of the object is all. You could try using a reflector to maybe fill some of that in with light if it is really bothering you.
