  • Why the salivating over Robert Quine? Have a listen to Steve Hunter's guitar work on Lou's original live album 'Rock & Roll Animal'. Hunter kicks Quine's ass!

  • I taped this show off the telly when I was a kid, must've played it 100 times... & I'm still not sick of it!

  • this gig is my Bible

  • I think it's great that during Lou's epic solo, you appear under his neck, in frame, furiously banging thy Jew-fro ..in ecstatic bliss.... denim arms flailing, you remove your glasses and wipe your brow...but "it was alright"....

  • My prefer song of Lou Reed in live, for me the top!

  • That's cool! When & where is that?

  • If FreshCatch is who he claims to be, he is the ALL TIME AIR GUITAR KING!!!!

  • This has that garage band stink all over it!!

  • I like how Lou Reed explores his guitar. As if out of the blue a guitar appears between his hands and he starts wondering "what could I do with this ? Seems interesting" and he starts trial/error guitar exploring looking for the right notes... I covered "Rock 'n Roll" for an art students audience and this young generation started dancing to that FINE FINE music ;-))) A true classic ! If you are curious, I uploaded it.

  • Like song says rock n roll......

  • I saw Lou Reed in Manchester,England, a few years ago,Fernando Saunders was with him, probably the best gig I've ever seen.

Reed has this presence I've never felt before.

You absolutely have to see him live to know what I mean.

I just dig this guy a whole lot.

I had to leave whilst he was playing this song (the last of the gig btw)what a way to leave the building, with this ringing in my ears,I'll never forget this wonderful memory. :)

  • Are you Albert Brooks?

  • best rhytm guitar by lou reed, great gig I wish I was there drinking whisky cola or something watching this

  • it seems like lou reed is tripping up on the words to the lyrics like he doesnt know the timing... hes way different in concert than he is on the velvet underground records, he doesnt have as much spirit in the way he sings. kinda ruins the awesomeness of the song...

  • Yeah, Bob, it's a highlight on Lou's career.

  • 6:48 That's just a great moment :) Look at him!

  • my fave line up

  • FreshCatch, hahaha no fucking way! If that was you, you would not admit it

  • Rest In Peace Robert Quine.

  • Awesome.

  • F*&^ing Awesome.

  • F*&^ing Awesome.

  • shake that ass Lou! :D

  • Everything about that song is just astonishing.

  • @adamofchorlton would make my short list for sure of greatest all time songs!

  • Legato mi trovo legato da questi brani di Lou Reed

  • BasswipeNC

Man, I strongly disagree: Maher / Saunders / Quine are a much more tight and to-the-point unit than the band on "Rock'nRoll Animal".

  • @Watchman71 check out the version he did with the Tots in 72....its on here

  • @Watchman71 I agree. The sound this band produces is a 100X more listenable than that overwrought guitar hero crap from the Rock n Roll Animal band of Lou's. Saunder's melodic bass & Quine's guitar are standouts for me. Even Lou plays some memorable solos, including on this song. And you're right, the drumming's good too. One of my fave recorded concerts ever!

    ...Johnny B. Goode?

  • What an Awesome show! My hair's on end, arms in goosebumps. Thank you, so much for putting this on!!!

  • I loveeeeee Air Guitar guy.........

  • hehe, yea, he's great

  • Well, what we have here is simply the greatest band that Reed has ever assembled in his entire solo career , playing some of his strongest material in an outstanding fiery way. Alongside Reed's ever charimastic performance, mr. Robert 'Voidoid' Quine is in IMHO really the main force at this concert, delivering his trademark blistering guitar solos all over the place, backed by the solid rhythm section of Saunders and Maher.

Ah, an BTW: I really envy the 'air guitar' dude :)

  • @Watchman71

Dude, get Rock and Roll animal and tell me that ain't the best Lou Reed band ever.

  • The joy of rock n roll is here.

  • this is such a great show, quine is fantastic, so's lou. Love the air guitar guy as well, theres nothing better than watching people enjoy a great performance.

  • Phish

  • What about them? Rip-off to too many fin+e and classic bands?

  • I'd love to have a bash on Mahers' drum kit.

  • me too!

  • 1984 "New Sensations" tour?

  • 1 of best r / r trax EVER Roq awn 4 ever Lou U de man!

  • anyone know who's the girl kissing him at the end?

  • That was his wife Sylvia, lol. Watch the end credits that rolled with that scene.

  • I believe she was his wife at the time.

  • @francesco0360 His former wife, Sylvia

  • Lou is the best!

  • mmmmm great song! guitar sound...perfect!

  • beautiful song

  • God bless Robert Quine..

  • love lou's jew fro!

  • He adds a nice comedic element.

  • Beautiful sound.

  • Beautiful sound.

  • Mitch Ryder's version kicks ass quite thoroughly...

  • This is a great version of the song! :D

  • Rock n Roll from 1969 live is the best version of this song, in my opinion.

I think Lou Reed did his best work with the Velvet Underground. The Velvet Underground played different versions of each of their songs, and Lou Reed would improvise lyrics, while jamming it out. What isn't to inspire you about that?

Lou Reed as a solo artist does serve a different niche though. I'm not saying he was worthless just not as good.

    Aye?

  • agreed 100% the long ass interlude/solo thing in the middle of Rock n Roll live '69 is mind numbing

  • is that version on youtube?

  • the version from the rockn'roll live album is my favorite

  • Fernando is one of the finest bassists I have ever heard. He makes that instrument his own.Beautiful sound.

  • Who's accomplished more without a singing voice than Lou Reed?

  • Bob Dylan and Neil Young.

  • If you like this get 'Rock and Roll Animal' a 'Live' album with Lou in peak performance...a Classic 'must have' and the version of this song on that album even blows this one away!

  • Damn straight. That was the best album he has ever done. Best versions of Rock and Roll and Herion. Just can't be beat.

  • get the fuck down! thats rock'n'roll a lot is to be learnt from this fella by some of the wankers playing festivals in the uk

  • This gig available on dvd...a night with lou reed....vhs is a better version though...dvd is cut to fuck.

  • The gospel according to Lou Reed.

  • Is this an official release? I got to listen to this in my car. Air guitar man, we would be jamming if I were born 20 years earlier.

  • Hey, morkos, dont let that stop you. Jam NOW.

  • air gtr guy.. you did good, hell you looked like you knew the 2 chords better than lou, lol

  • When I play this song, i can understand why i love music.

  • I am the air guitar guy in the front row. I waited 8 hours on line to get that seat. Was 23 at the time in law school. In the audience was Andy Warhol, Lou Reed's parents, Adam Ant, members of the Go-Go's. Amazing show. I was shocked to see VHS/DVD with my face splattered all over this song. My 15 minutes of fame.

  • your the air guitar guy? haha i remember reading a review i think u wrote on CDnow about this show.

  • @FreshCatch1 .....that is awesome man! This is my first time seeing this video and you were the first thing i saw as i looked at my computer screen...hahaha Nice work:)

  • @FreshCatch1 Great air guitar! I think even Lou is admiring it.

  • @FreshCatch1 cool story.. fail air guitar tho lol

  • @FreshCatch1 Its certainly no mystery why you didn't have a date...

  • @FreshCatch1 Sure you were dude.

  • @FreshCatch1 @FreshCatch1 That's funny! I've had a VHS tape of this concert forever

I remember my guitar playing friend commenting disdainfully on the damn irritating air guitarist in the front row!...So you're the culprit!

...15 mins. of fame...and there you were in the audience with the very guy who coined that phrase, Andy Warhol, who once famously said something like "In the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes" !

  • @FreshCatch1 Lou Reed's parents? He's not on the best of terms with them, is he...?

  • @FreshCatch1 i can't believe that you would say that that was you...'cause anyone who has seen this knows that that was Harold Ramis

  • @FreshCatch1 If you are indeed legit, you are an air guitar legend. You are in frame some 17 times exuberantly miming Lou's downstroke. Flailing denim arms, Jew fro furiously bopping on the quarter notes, you bring "Rock n Roll" home. Your bacchanal peaked when during Lou's solo, you had to remove your glasses and wipe your brow..but "it was alright"....love your spirit ....Air Guitar Hall of Fame

  • @FreshCatch1 You are a fucking luky bastard..i wish i could have seen him so close!!Rck and roll buddy!!take care!!

  • @FreshCatch1 you wasted them doing air guitar???

  • @FreshCatch1 Yeah online....suuuure. Maybe you were playing an advanced version of pacman. I'll beleive that.

  • The best performance of this song I've ever seen.

  • Excellent! The air guitar guy in the audience was entertaining too!

  • Billy Holiday said that to do a song the same way wasn't singing. Lou Reed has a different take on a song every time he does it. Way to go!
