  • Ooohhh Allison got burned

  • INTERNET

  • who cares about a bunch of cavemen who died millions of years ago

  • what is the exact day of this?

  • you know what would be funny? if someone were to somehow someday harness the power of this thing called the "internet" to then share this video with others who would mock us for how little we understand about this "internet". that could never happen...right?

  • @hamiltonjsh

You know what isn't funny. You or someone like you posting this exact comment on every old video talking about the internet.

  • "What is the Internet anyway?"

"That's something that people will use to watch you in 15 years and laugh their asses of because you asked!" :)

  • the internet is a series of tubes, obviously.

  • NEXT: How to use the three shells

  • @Doowoo I'd be interested in knowing that, too. Actually, the _Demolition Man_ folks have admitted there never was any explanation. Great running joke, though.

  • @Doowoo

I was so not expecting this comment. Top notch sir top notch! ;b

  • Haha funny vid... but seriously what is the internet?

  • Idiot, The World Wide Web was launched 4 years prior to this

  • I remember my paw first mentioning the networking and communication through computers... oh how I wanted the internet. Didn't get it til I was 17, my parents seemd so slow on the uptake. That was 1997

  • winning the internetz was impossible for most back then...they did not know how it was won

  • 0:37 That @ symbol looks different.

  • You've got FAIL!

  • life was so much better back than.it was the days that society didnot have to depend on a computer. good and every kind of music was played on the radio.good tv shows were played only on tv.pictures were shown at home and socializing was direct or through by phone. and even education was taught through paper and pencil. and even back than we weren't so dependent on technology like we are now. just tell me what happens if one day we don't have a computer in front of us.

  • "You don't need a phone line to operate internet?"

    LOL

  • I wish we were still like this.... instead of being 'on' it all the time.... it was a simpler time

  • lolololololol

  • I've heard of the internet in 1996, I was in middle school. Back then, the internet didn't have a firewall to block inappropriate sites. So kids my age were forbidden to use it on school property. I didn't actually use it until 1999 at my aunts house.

Now it's overrun with attention whores and it's not the same anymore. It used to be peaceful. Now there is such a bad stigma attached to it. They should only let people over the age of 21 to use it. It will cut out a lot of the nonsense.

  • @expised97 that's ironic considering you used the Internet to post that message. I hope 97 doesn't correspond to your year of birth or you shouldn't be talking about the 80s :p

  • Congratulations, you won!

  • @exposed97 this is so not true. trolling was there at the beginning

the past wasn't better, you just prefer to think about the good things

  • @exposed97 I agree, and families were closer together. People went out and mingled w friends too.

  • SERIES OF TUBES

  • You've got mail

  • n00bs...

  • the internet is my life.. I love it!

  • maybe an odd question.. but 1994, is that "included" in the Early 90s era?

  • @hulkhogantupaclover Yes, anything after 1995 is late 90's.

  • dang how old are you katie??? sheesh

  • "They used the internet when the phone lines were down"

    .

I don't think so sister! Back in 94 the only way to connect was by Dialup modem, so if the phones were out so too was your internet connection. (Of course there were some hardlines, but those were almost-all restricted to military soldiers and college professors.) No emailing for the average person

    .

  • Only nerds use the internet...

  • @shrapnelkiller your on it bitch lol, oh and you mean geeks n00b

  • I love how they put "internet address" instead of email address. That is not a url...

  • International Network !!!

  • MARK RYLANCE KERRY FOX ELLE MACPHERSON SUSAN SARANDON SON LUKE PERRY TECHNOLOGY WHERE WHO DEA EXPIRED HOME PLAY PAUSE ll Tab lV

    MOBILE PHONE LISA SNOWDON

  • Wow. How far we have come!

  • What are drunk tank comments? What does it mean to be drunk tanked. This term is new to me and I don't see much about it on google?

  • @CobainsRemains The "Drunk Tank" is a podcast by Rooster Teeth Productions, and during the podcast, they mention things that they've seen on the internet. The editor then posts links to whatever article, or Youtube video, that they talked about. Then, everyone who gets to the videos through the "link dump" comments "DRUNK TANK!" on the video, it's an ongoing meme that tends to annoy everyone who has no idea what they are talking about.

  • @CobainsRemains It is an "internet" (what ever that is) podcast. roosterteeth(.)com/podcast/

  • @CobainsRemains It is a podcast on the Rooster Teeth website where the viewers take enjoyment in spamming the comments writing "DRUNK TANK". I came here from drunk tank, but i am not one of those people.

  • Internet is just some nerd creep bullshit.. normal people never gonna use it haha

  • im actually gonna search that site

  • Internet=Life

  • do you people realize that NOBODY knew what the internet was in 1994, and most of you couldn't explain what "the internet" is today without Googling "What is the internet?"

  • @mcoates04 What is the difference between googling what is the internet, asking a friend, or reading it in a book. How does googling it change anything?

  • What do you say? I don't have any negative comments. All I can say is WOW. We actually listened to these people. WOW They went to college. WOW.

  • @jaconguy you didn't learn about the internet in 1994... Remember, it is a, historically speaking, new concept.

  • @ehhblinkin Not sure what you and the rest are talking about, but in 1994 I had already been "online" for half a decade!

    .

I bought my first modem in 1988 and logged-in forums, chat rooms, and downloaded music and games. You can still find some of my public posts on Googlenews. It was during this time shorthand like LOL, L8r, BRB, IMHO, etc were invented

    .

Remember - The Internet was invented in 1983, and its predecessor was the ARPAnet developed during the 70s. It's pretty old technology

    .

  • Hey I work in tech and in 1994 I thought the Internet was AOL

  • The internet is a series of tubes...

  • God, Gumble is such a dipstick.

  • too bad the guy was too narrow minded lol

  • The Internet is an electrical typewriter that also works as a text-to-speech phone. There, that's the "Internet for 90's old timers" in a nutshell.

  • That's funny, I had the same conversation yesterday.

  • Anyone gonna email that email? See if you get a response? :P

  • "It-it-- it's a series of tubes!"

  • Internet is a series of tubes

  • Is 1994 early 90's ?

  • @hulkhogantupaclover ....Did you just ask that question?

  • Bryant Gumbel: What is internet anyway?

Contemporary Teenager: Let my google that on my iPad for you...

    BG: *head explodes*

  • @assramistan my? e isn't even close to Y on the keyboard wtf

  • i think the funniest part about this is that the people commenting on this are like "WOW i knew the internet since i was 10!" and other bullshit. how many of you actually know how the internet works? most likely...a small percentage. dont think youre all high and mighty cause you use something that was just starting to become significant in the 90's. they dont know how it works and decades later still most people dont know how it works. dont think your special.

  • 1:20 You don't need a phone line to operate internet. Apparently not.

  • @follownicholas lmao you did then

  • @Southfield1000 The idea of the internet has been around since the 50's--it just wasnt' called the "Internet", it was referred to as a "network". Just look up "Arpanet". Arpanet was launched in 1969.

  • Good point but really? What is Internet? That's funny. I got here from the drunk tank podcast made by roosterteeth. Anyway thanks for thinking instead of just saying 'hehe what a dumb-butt hehehe'

    (to the guy under me)

  • I had conversations like this.

I remember seeing my first cordless phone, first fax machine, first PC and Mac, first car phone (a bag phone), first smart phone, first iPod, etc. I remember getting on the Internet for the first time and what a rush it was.

Unlike so many arrogant young fools posting here, I never rolled my eyes at people who weren't as familiar. And I have the common sense to realize all of these marvels were created by people smarter than me, not by teenagers.

  • @TurnFourAction

Same here. I remember being baffled by the whole internet thing when it was new. I used to get confused between AOL and the World Wide Web. I thought AOL was an internet onto itself.

Yeah, kids today were weened on it and are very ignorant to the fact that there was life and new technologies emerging way before they were born.

  • I first came around computers playing games around 1999 (nfs, golf, etc). Then it was only in year 2001 that I came across internet with my big bro teaching me the stuff coz we always visit the big city to spend our vacation time together with my sis's. We live at a town at that time where there's still no internet ..........

PS: chatrooms are already popular at college in 1995.

  • Circa 1994, the Internet as we kind of currently define it played second fiddle to online services such as CompuServe, AOL and, to a lesser extent, multimedia technology in the form of interactive CD-ROMs.

  • There are a lot of ppl making criticizing their lack of knowlege. To all the teens who wish to make disparaging comments. There are many of us (25 and older) who can vividly remember a world before ppl tweeted, texted, skyped, and googled. These things have only recently become a part of everyday life.

I remember in elementary school, teachers used to constantly tell us that computers were gonna take over in the new millenium. I'll be damned if they weren't telling the truth!

  • @tincredible I remember in elementary school, teachers used to constantly tell us that computers were gonna take over in the new millenium. I'll be damned if they weren't telling the truth!

    ---

I had a HS teacher in 90-91 who made a 10 min speech one day about what the internet (or "web") was going to be in the coming years. He sounded like a prophet. I don't think it became known to everyone and his grandma until about 96, perhaps. 96 was the earliest that I ever "web surfed", dude.

  • this is funny!

  • I like REAL discussion like this instead of the swarmy exchange of scripted, banal lines we see on TV.

  • retards. i knew what an internet was at 5 years old

  • @Alyzabeth1990 An internet? I guess you is smarter than us.

  • @Alyzabeth1990 when this was filmed the internet was just gaining it's popularity

  • The problem is not that gumbel is ignorant of the internet, the problem is his projected arrogance. I was 10 when this was made and had already been using the internet for a year. He acted like anything he didnt already know about couldnt be important, and it wasnt deserving of more than 10 seconds of his attention.

  • @gbiota1 It's his age. He's in his 60's. It's a WHOLE different generation. They just can't connect the dots. Not saying it's a bad thing by any means. He was around before TV's were the norm, Cars were fairly new, and color tv was still 15 years off. My gosh people were watching bw tv's in the 70's still! Cable tv?? Didn't exist until the 80's. Give the guy a break.

  • WHAT IS TEH INTRANETS?

  • BUT WHAT IS THE INTERNET!?!??

  • @DonkeyManda432 it is a giant sentient electrical being that is going take over the world in 2017

  • i here theres some internet out californee way

  • Amazing the children today don't know a world without the net.

  • @rubberneck39 i'm one of them!

  • water, fire air and dirt, f*cking internets, how do they work?

  • @hectorlima what about magnets?

  • Gee, whats internet?

  • I always wanted to learn about the @ internet. For now I'll stay with YouTube.

  • I dont get it, whats internet?

  • Different generation, relatively new phenomenon. Not that hard to understand why Bryant Gumbel was lost.

  • So 5 people still don't know what the internet is?

  • @Fmaack It's not a big truck! It's a series of tubes!

  • "What is the internet?

    What am the sky?

    How does eat food?"

  • 1000 like :D

  • "The @ sounded so stupid when I said it"..... I wonder what they say abouy "@" now! lol

  • hahaha, lmao , 'What is internet?' dude, obvii much?

  • Damn, Elizabeth Vargas was HOT!

  • what am internet

  • The internet, according to Webster's Made-Up Dictionary, is defined as a SERIES OF TUBES.

  • OMGLAWL.

    What is internet?

  • u can see the makeup!

  • See I liked this. Its before the internet was truely global, before nearly every house had a computer. If you look its before "@" was as it looks today. I would like to see more stuff like this and hear them talk about an up and coming this called 'internet'

  • Wow, not a single DRUNK TANK!

  • @Patefaction Actually, there has been a massive pile of "DRUNK TANK comments submitted, but since I really don't want the substantive comments buried under an endless number of such exclamations, you, Petefaction, can be the representative "Drunk Tank" comment author. Congratulations. But there's no prize.

  • @VortexTech Aww, but having a load of Drunk Tank comments is like a badge of honour. Almost on par with Teh Flood!!!

  • @moctuzuma Perhaps so. But hundreds of DRUNK TANK comments at the top would drive the substantive comments down out of view. Too bad there's no alternative way for viewers to sort them.

  • @VortexTech

I was drunk tanked a few months ago on my video. lol.

    I got a funny comment "inebriated war-machine"

  • @VortexTech That sir, is the correct response.

Well done... There would be a prize, but unfortunately I don't understand how to send one over internet.

    What is it anyway?

  • wow so awesome, I want to see more of these vids where people don't know what the internet is.

  • Yep... I remember the world wide web... that thing we used to call the internet.... yep...

the dot com & the dot schlams...yeah... what a shame.... it went out like 8 track players, record vinyl lps, cassette decks tapes, vcrs.... yep, I remember the the internet.... emails...@

  • Didn't one "need a phone line to operate internet" at that time?

  • Love it. So funny.

  • Hi #UN#

very Nice Channel & Videos, Keep up the great Work.

    Thanks,

    Samantha

  • when's the next episode of gumbel 2 gumbel beach justice?

  • Most of us didn't understand what the internet was back then. No reason to feel ashamed about it, Bryant, FFS!

  • @MsLalawilks

I was only 4 back then. I think i first started using the internet around 1997/1998, and it was AOL. I actually don't ever remember having someone explain to me what the internet was. I just remember using it like an extension to the rest of me. I'm 21 now :)

  • Thank you for explaining. This has been confusing me for some time.

  • No, no you don't need a phone line for internet... 4G Wireless Anywhere stick, the 1994 model, right? Or just tether to your analog Motorola grey brick phone.

  • The internet has gotten much bigger since 1994, but unfortunately Katie Couric hasn't gotten any smarter.

  • They didn't even have the encoded @ sign! From 1995 and on, the internet was becoming a BIG thing, however high-speed, broadband internet wasn't available in my neighborhood of Mississauga (near Toronto) until around 2002 or 2003. Some communities, particularly in large cities, had high-speed 10MBPS internet as early as 1995.

  • @ has nothing to do with the internet

  • LOL. the internet sucked in 1994, take the cheapest website you can find today, X's it by 50 and you will get the internet in 1994 (crap X 50= websites in 1994)

When the internet first started Webpages were basically colorful word documents.

It evolved into something great but if someone would have asked you to put money into a website site you would have laughed at them.

P.S. you could only find a website if you knew the exact web address, they didn't have good search engines back then.

  • internet??? what is this internet you are talking about? and what is this @ thing? its all the work of the DEVIL!!!!! BEGONE SATAN!!!!!!

  • do you write to it, like mail?

  • the internet being big is an understatement

  • Hilarious.

  • 4 people don't know what the internet is.

  • anyone catch how funny the ending was? if you were connecting to the internet with something other than a phone in 1994 i'd really like to know what you were using

  • @rhinonose Black magic. That's still how it works.

  • OMG

This should be in a museum for the internet generation.

  • The 90s were a different time.

  • back in 1989 i used to get lots of AOL free-trial cds why didnt htey have free internet?

  • @FormerlyKnownAsShun lol wut? im sure you didnt get Cds and if you dont know why there was no free internet you FAIL

  • @FormerlyKnownAsShun They did have free internet. It was called NetZero. Also, if you had AOL, and you were cancelling your subscription, you could milk a couple of months of free internet from them.

  • Thats seriously hilarious

  • Seems retarded when you watch it right now.

But you have to consider it was in 1994...

why the fuck would you fire him? retards...

  • @AzngameFreak03 because he knew and wanted the thumbs up on youtube...>:)

  • From Gumbel saying "56 past" at the very beginning, it looks like the segment that the network provides but is not seen on most stations because they air their own local news/weather break. Some small-market stations or others without local news/weather breaks would have aired this--but that is not many.

  • This is kind of funny.

  • How times have change!

  • whoa!!!!!

    imagine that... D:

there was a time when internet was new and strange!!!

this was just a few weeks before i was born xP

  • This is so funny from a nostalgic point of view, but to be honest many people didn't know about the internet in 1994 so there is no shame on that. It would be like trying to make fun of a 1974 recording of reporters asking what's a mobile phone.

  • Unfortunately, no one can be told what The Internet is. You have to see it for yourself.

  • feel sorry for the guy who got fired for posting this - this is like watching the 3 stooges - Katie should have a good laugh and not take herself so seriously - and she should not be part of a guy losing his job - geez ...

  • This internet thing will never catch on

  • @rbell101190 They said that about TV, the beatles and video games.

  • @rbell101190 Neither will pockets... Silly things... Pockets.

  • Oh the past. How we do enjoy laughing at you from the future.

  • THIS IS FRIKKEN HILARIOUS

  • i googled the internet and found this.

  • This loaded very slow for me, I think the tubes are clogged. Can't wait for the ping pong like balls with the powerball numbers on them to come thru and unclog the tubes. When is the next drawing?

  • WOW! LOOK HOW FAR TECHNOLOGY HAS COMEH

  • its funny cuz were 17 years in the future and i feel super smart

  • Bless that nerd off camera who spoke up to explain the whole deal.

  • All the guy needed to say was "it's a series of tubes".

  • lol

  • Why would NBC fire the guy who found and leaked this video? If anything they should of just showed it on the current today show and laughed about it. The fact that Bryant Gumbel through a fit about this being leak is just stupid. Bryant gumbel is a cry baby.

Just shows he wants it to make it look like hes perfect. It was 1994 its ok if you didn't know what the internet was

  • @TheGreatBean0 I haven't seen reports of Gumbel being upset (but if you know of such references, please share them). The leaker apparently (at least according to NBC) had a history of such actions, and they claim his firing was not based on this incident alone.

  • @TheGreatBean0 exactly man, couldnt have said it better, the guy who found it should be rewarded with at least a pat on the back or sumin. but these media elitist take themselves too seriously, and cant even find humor in such a funny thing. most people didnt know what internet was back then, why are they so fuggin insecure with themselves. but overall, it shows how fast time flies eh?

  • @TheGreatBean0 : Because it NBC. Apparently appropriate decisions aren't their ball of wick. They standard reaction is over reaction.

  • isn't that cool to see how far technology has come? its so cool

  • The internet is a series of tubes.

  • @bitchiknowyouloveme It's NOT a big TRUCK!!!

  • I still wear a t-shirt that I bought in 1994 @ a concert! Man does time fly..........

  • guy got the sack for leaking this clip

  • @shakemahead And leaking other things in the past, apparently.
