  • Bassoon. <3

  • So, we have this in our music library right?

Well, it wasn't open and I asked if I could open it to see what it looked like.

It looked intense, I youtubed it...came back got the oboe part.

    Learned it.

Now I'm asking for it to be played.

There is no way I'm graduating without playing this.

  • we played this song in marching band. it was AMAZING :)

  • @blkRNcld101 how was it to march to with all the weird tempos, and i ment to vote up and hit wrong button

  • @TheBandKid116 it was very confusing at first...but after a while it just made sense. it felt sort of like dancing... lol, especially when we played 1:16. we even had a bit of choreography right there.

  • @blkRNcld101 do u have any video of it i would like to c that show

  • alto solo is SO fun!

  • I had a blast playing this. We had fog blasting behind us and red lights glowing on top of the band! FANTASTIC!!!!

  • @theEFG I actually think it's English Horn, but I'm not completely sure

  • this shall be played at my funeral!

  • I think I will go on a rotation each night. Something old, something new or well newer. Tonight is for a new(er) piece.

  • I played this my senior year at Carnegie Hall!! Flutes rock!

  • I played this my senior year at Carneie Hall!! Flutes rock!

  • TO ANSWER THE 16 PEOPLE WHO ASKED, 217 IS AT 5:13

  • @anandien70 thanks, favorite part, Furious!

  • @anandien70 You sir, are awesome. 217 is one of my favorite parts.

  • band at my school played this =D

  • when is measure 217?

  • We played this song at Midwestern Music Academy. It's the coolest thing I've ever played.

  • @JDHAdrummer I was there too! in the trumpet section, and yes, it was amazing

  • Played this my senior year, gave us first runner up at a contest in Branson Missouri! Always loved this song!

  • at what time is measure 217?

  • played in my schools high school wind ensamble. and jesus did i love to play the hell out of the sax part near the begining

  • This is the 2000 Virginia All State Band (High School) Performing at JMU. This was played after coming together for only 2 days to learn the music - I played in this performance. I forget who the director was that year, but this is a fantastic piece that is a load of fun to play.

  • I remember playing this song in High School my 11th grade year

  • @wwefansince1998 Dude, I played this junior year too! Bitchin song :D

  • love this song since ahs played it

  • I love this song oh so much. I love the concert version of this piece, but, my band director is making it into a marching piece, which I didn't see as possible. But, anyway, I still love it! Although the 9/8 is going to be hard to march too xP And the 11/8

  • yeah, i've been working on sight reading recently and this piece came up, i played it, i loved it, looked at the composer and i was like, OMG I KNOW HIM lol, i've played several of Ticheli's pieces before, my favorite being american elegy, Frank Ticheli's a great composer.

  • @daneckenrode If I were to make a list of the top five composers I'd like to meet he'd deffinatly be on that list, although Matt Bellemy would be first lol (lead singer of Muse, actually wrote a full symphony putting all parts together himself)

  • i love frank ticheli he was a master at his work and i played this song in competition,....it wins every time!!!!

  • how bout; way to end the song before the end of the last 11/8 measure... THAT! is the best ending... and you ruined it. FEEL BAD!

  • 217! favorite part

  • To be honest, I like this piece, but I don't really get the image of Vesuvius. While the sax and clarinet solos sound like lava creeping down a mountain, staccato notes just don't seem volcanistic (if that's a word). When I think of a volcano, I think long crescendos and decrescendos, not a sudden rip.

  • @RhapsodyinStu I understand your feeling. Vesuvius wasn't like normal volcanoes. In the sense that, It was rumbly in the beginning and smokey and loud. Yet nobody knew why. People fled fearing the gods. but the it was quite for a few days// Then out of nowhere. BOOOM!!! It explodes so ferociously that the only stories about this event come from other cities whom survived the chaos. The point of the rushing 217 and hard 9/8 is to show how fast it happened.

    .

  • this song is hard but I love it

  • i love mesure 217 i alway play that part wen im bored

  • measure 217!!! woooo!!! go euphoniums!! i <3 9/8

  • 9/8 is annoying to count D:

  • @KhiroNEXT not if you count it like a 5/4 (yay division) and if you have a conductor that can conduct 5/4 as a 4/4 yes it's doable you count 1; 2(3); 4;5 so it looks like 1, 2, pause, 3, 4. because the hard beats in this song are on 1,2,4,&5 anyways. i know it might sound hard without seeing it. but if you try only counting on those beats during the 9/8 it will make your life much easier. I promise.

  • anyone know how many themes this song's got ?

  • @OFFICIALTheJazz6 There's four.

  • I played this back in High school. Our second band played this and got a one. We've had straight one's since 1959. Look up Longview High School Marching Band. Strictly Military marching style. One of the best in Texas. Every 2 years we go to Florida and take on other bands from around the US, and we kill them.

  • can someone tell me what time in this measure 217 is?

  • @biznock19 3/4

  • ah our band played this last year, its such an awesome song :P its good to have clarinet and flute players who arent terrible. lol

  • the honor band is playing this song at my school AND HONOR BAND IS THE BEST!!

  • @cchat5 our 3rd band is playing this.

  • Nuuu Measure 211! D:<

  • we got #1 at our Heritage Festival this weekend for playing this song in Anaheim !

  • @thaPROducer3 kus we kick ass and raped that competition :D

  • @thaPROducer3 hahaha who is this from nade? this is kyle lol

  • AM i the only flute player who has a hard time rolling their tongue when we play this? It's an amazing song though

  • where can u find this piece for the oboe

  • Cool this music was written by the man who wrote music for our HS competition shows :)

  • We were told today by our band director that we were playing this next year.

Sounds really fun to play. Well, so did Trittico and Symphonic Movement. XD

  • @inuyasha32123 trust me, its a ton of fun to play

  • I have timpani...my director dislikes me...

  • Just got the piece - it chellenging but it certainly sounds worth it!

  • Haha I play Tuba, so yeah I love measure 217 :)

  • put this way I LOVE this song :) my favorite song i EVER played :)

  • Which one do you think is harder for brass vesuvius or ride?

  • Having played both. I would have to go with Vesuvius

  • My god, that was some serious musical constipation. Pleeeeeease lenghten the video! The last two notes are missing! I HIT THE FLOOR!

  • sounds like Blue Shades.

  • 2:13- Reminds me of Dave Brubeck's "Blue Rondo A La Turk". I guess this piece influenced that composition.

  • ...Blue Rondo definitely came first

  • @altomajor When was this piece (Vesuvius) written?

  • I miss playing this, my sr year our instructor gave me the 1st French horn part to play on an upright bass, good times and a 1 @ states!

  • This song is great because you can feel and almost see the volcano erupting. You can feel all the emotions and horror that Pompeii must have experienced. Frank Ticheli, i applaud you :)

  • D: you cut off the epic ending!!!

  • i know!!!!! i was waiting for the epic BANG at the end and u leave out the 288th measure! but i still love the recording!! thanks for puttng it on hear with pics!

  • Oh my gosh! we're playing this for our mid-year recital! im playing piccolo

  • playing this song for UIL in the 2nd band from my high school; im playing the xylo, vibes, susp. cymbal, and the triangle. really fun song

  • we are playing this now...it's my favorite song

  • my middle school is playing this

  • This song is pretty amazing. My high school band is just getting large enough to have a wind ensemble again after a new teacher took over 5 years ago :P But she always tells stories of how her wind ensemble played this song 5 years ago and got a 5 at festival(5 being the worst). Amazing song though

  • we play this at evaluation this year

My dorector totally overestimated the percussion section

we won't even have a lot of the stuff on that sheet music

I had to research what the hell a crotale was

we dont have Vibes or a Marimba either

and guess who got stuck with the Mallet percussion part

We are so not going to state this year

  • You.

You seriously didn't know what a crotale was?

  • well excuse me for not coming from a rich high society where there's nothing but money gold and crotales everywhere.

and please excuse me for not knowing every percussion instrument ever(everytime I think I knnow the all, another appears)

well this ought to entertain you mister upper-class crotale having guy, my school is the only high school on the Southern Side of town, we're f*king broke, so we couldn't afford the crotale, we used finger cymbals, and you know what we got

    FUCKING SUPERIOR

  • Ha ha, you act as if I'm upper-class. No, bro, my school is pretty low-class. Not the lowest, we've gotten lucky breaks, but it's the ghetto school of the region.

I just happen to be a very enlightened percussionist who actually, you know, knows his instruments.

  • calm down , now

    no need for hurtful words

i was tired and listening to 3 days grace when i read your reply (yes i'm a very mixed interest person)

but do forgive me for my earlier comment, as i had forgotten to check the age on your profile (don't tell me if thats accurate or not, doesn't matter that much)

i myself would be more embarrased if I were a percussionist who didn't know the instruments by age 26

  • Frank Ticheli is amazing. He writes with such passion and energy. I played this in my high school's wind ensemble. We were terrible at it though.

  • this is the army band :) i have this recording...its the best recording of this song you will find

  • My district's honor band is playing this. I'm so jealous! I bet I was close to chairing too!

  • I love the rhythm to this song! Glad we get to play it this year

  • 217's my favorite part lol...low brass (tbone) gets to let loose lol.

  • @JimmyHopkins2 yea thts what i played for this song. been years though so i dont remember it

  • Ahh yes I know! My saxophone 2's can't play 217 well at all! and It gets me really angry and frustrated!! (Actually Shmallowman's girlfriend saying this)

  • I only have one thing to say to you all:

    Measure 217.

  • hellz yeah, trombones love 217

  • @SukatoKjolen 2nd clarinet. hot damn.

  • @Rovelius39X7 hey do since u have that music do u think that u might get the obowe part

  • @SukatoKjolen best part of the song and the 3/2 measure are cool. and that senza crescendo into that weird release chord best part

  • @SukatoKjolen which instrrament, euphonium was boring there

  • @SukatoKjolen which instrrament, euphonium was kinda boring there

  • @TheBandKid116 whatever. Euphonium at 217 was so much fun! I loved it.

  • @JEsuSaNdMuSic27 where is that exactly i dont remember, its been a while since i looked at it, bout 2 years ago,but got to play it with Frank Tichelli as gust conductor

  • @JEsuSaNdMuSic27 Euphonium for the win!!!!!

  • @homo901 YES. The Euphonium part on this is made of awesome.

  • OMG YOU NEEDED ONE MORE SECOND!! haha you cut out the ending!!!

  • we gonna play this song...havent got the music yet

  • I would LOVE to have a recording of this where I can hear that timpani part right out there and the bass drum isn't so resonant...

I'm the percussion captain at my school and we played this; I took the timpani and it was awesome.

  • Great Recording!!! I could listen to Frank Ticheli for hours!!! :)

  • Me too. His calm but agile-like imaginative music is what got me through composing my band prelude (which is to be sent off to two composition competitions this next week). He is truly the master of band works.

  • Oh thats great! Good Luck in the competition!!! I wish you all the best. You should put up a recording if you can. :-)

  • i love this song! im playing it in band and my solo starts at 3:41. The song is super hard emotionally, but my solo is easy:)

  • @MusicIsMyLife3212 you play oboe like me(: this song is super fun to play but our band director took it up cuz other people couldn't play it :( so no solo for me...hope you enjoy vesuvius and your solo ^-^

  • awesome song!!!

  • on my copy of it i love measure 217

fiery brass sixteenth notes...then long sustained powerful D natural.

  • love the brasses

  • hey guys got the shit and listen to the fucking music. grow up and shut up

  • I love Vesuvius. We've only played through it a few times in Wind Ensemble, but it's just so much fun. I love it so much more than Nitro( Sorry Ticheli, but I hate Nitro lol)

I especially love all the weire meters like the 9/8 lol it's just so much fun! (Bakc geeking out to the extreme! haha)

  • 9/8 is one heck of a way to count a song. But is so fun to play. I personally think fate of the gods is also a great song we're playing both in concert band this year. Hey and jazz band geeks want a good song definitly look up " walkin' and swing' " its so much fun to play.

  • @blapblapblap13 Especial when its counted 2 3 2 2 very strange just played it today

  • We got this song today for concert band...I was surprised to see a measure of 1/4

  • @clarib920 I know. But its fun to play. =]

  • Now halodude162, we understand that your homophobia is a result of your fear of becoming a homosexual yourself and the ridicule that your friends would unleash upon you, but that is no excuse for your rudeness. If you would put down those stupid prejudiced views of yours and focus on the music you will find details that will amaze and astound someone with your poor intelligence. Just shut up and listen to the music and appreciate it like a good little boy.

  • Dude we enjoy the music. It has nothing to do with our love life.

  • i gave you a thumbs down because halo SUCKS!

  • @halodude162 thank you for the advice, tanner! that sure was clever, especially being in a youtube comment. how do you find the time to give high quality advice like that in between all the pussy you get?

if playing guitar made me an arrogant shit like yourself, forget pussy. want to get laid? convert to islam.

    dipshit.

  • I find this most humorous.

There is a demand for classical musicians -- I will make a living. On the other hand, there is a surplus of second-rate guitarists such as yourself. You will go no where with your music, and if your pursue it, you'll likely end up a poverty-stricken -- not to mention pussyless -- idiot. Enjoy your homophobia, and if you're smart, a lovely cubicle.

  • @MonDieuable What is your primary instrument??

  • The Horn.

  • my cousin played this and she really likes it

  • I played this song in band last year. It is frieken amazing. I also met Frank Ticheli at WIBC this year. He's crazy. His new song Wild Nights, is frieken INSANE! It is so f***ing hard. It gives me a headache to look at! lol

  • We're putting this song together for our next Wind Ensemble concert. It's a beast in counting. Should be fun though. Great work!

  • im playing this in band :D

  • my highschool band is playing this and wen he makes us stop to go over a section is freaken annoying

  • Nice grammar. Fag.

  • dont insult some1 just because they have bad grammar.

  • who cares about spelling on the internet

  • Was that a statement or a question?

  • is the part in the middle a rendition of Blue Rondu a la Turk?

  • *rondo

  • tch-tchh-Tch-Tchh-TCH-TCHH-TCh-TChh-Tch-Tchhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

It was 10 years ago since the state competition, but I totally remember the kid next to me spraying spit all over the the back of the cute flautist that sat in front of him during the cha-cha-shhh's. I almost died laughing.

  • hahaha!

  • sweeeet

  • Just to to let people know this piece has 4/4, 9/8, 8/8, 3/4, 2/4, 1/4, 11/8, 3/2, and 7/8 time signatures in it. I'm not trying to make anyone mad by posting this so don't take it in the wrong context, but

Im0an0asshole if you claim to be so "professional" then why the fuck are you starting a fight on youtube? If you were professional you would calmly state your oppinion and not try to pick at other people and by posting your oppinion on youtube you pretty much invited everyone to join in on it

  • excuse me. Why don't you read my original comment in context first before jumping down my throat and accusing me of starting arguments. I responded to guthoriantony who said they hate playing euph coz their part sucks and told them brass banding is the place to be for euphs who want more interesting parts. Then I stated to someone who said they disagreed that I would have a lot more experience in brass playing than them as I work as a teacher and pro musician and they are a school student.

  • You're fuckin crazy and I feel sorry for any of your students

  • now people like you are making accusations, insults and doubting what I've been saying without even going back and looking at what I said in the first place. Which was a completely valid point which is generally common knowledge amongst brass players. So go back, read my comments, then eat your words about me trying to 'start a fight' thank you very much. And here you are saying 'don't take my comment in the wrong context.' Also, I know the time signatures, I played this piece in university

  • I never said you didn't know the time signatures you dumb ass. I just put that on there for people who would like to know what time signatures this piece has.

  • Why am I crazy? I was replying to the fact that you said that I was starting a fight on youtube, whereas all I did in the first place was 'calmly state my opinion,' to use your words. So there's no need to call me fuckin crazy or even mention my students or teaching.

  • the band at my school is going to play this in march and i cant wait to play it since im in band too

  • ok. the time signature is 4/4. but it also has 9/8.

and it also has ,mixed time signatures...which makes it a pretty hard to play. its a fun piece..especialy when you have it as a marching show. :] so yea.

  • You guys should just stop arguing over a comment on youtube. The piece has a 9/8 time signature btw
