He did really try, but M2K brought a more technical Marth to the metagame which is why he was better before Ken finally stopped playing. Maybe he didn't try hard enough to practice, but that's part of what it takes to be the best. You can have all the potential in the world but if you don't utilize your talents you deserve to lose. They're both great players regardless of who is better, though.
Ken had plenty of tech skill, but M2K just was able to use techs more efficiently. He was definitely one of the smartest players to play, but it's a stretch to say any one player is ever the smartest. Intelligence doesn't always transition to tournament wins.

I would still be playing Melee if Shffling didn't exist. I don't have the motor skills to do it consistently, especially in a high pressure tournament situation. I'm fine though with all the other standard advanced techniques.
Just being able to short hop and Z cancel in Smash 64 is a big deal to me. And thats on the 64 controller, and my emulator controller, where the buttons require a reasonable amount of pressure to push. Now in Melee you have these clunky shoulder buttons to L cancel with, L cancel in Melee doesn't completely cancel lag like in 64, and theres a fastfall added in. Thats just too much. >_>
It's not the same. I've tried to do it, I've been practicing for years, I just don't have the motor skills to compete with those who do, and can do it consistently. Now that Brawl is out, I don't have to bust my ass trying to do something I know I can't do.
you don't have to press l all the way down to l cancel :\
also, it just sounds like you havent played enough really. any motor skill required in brawl is the same as melee, just faster. you know how to shorthop, attack, fast fall in brawl. do the same in melee + a button is not much more difficult. you are just probably having trouble with shorthopping in melee. try starting with a character like ganondorf or bowser, they sh a lot closer to brawl speed. getting good in melee is more rewarding.
I have no problems short hopping with pretty much any character.
Plus theres no WD or L cancel in Brawl, and you've identified the main issue, the faster part. THATS what you need the good motor skills for, to do all that at high speed.
And the GC shoulder buttons just don't feel comfortable to me, I really don't like them.
I much prefer the Z button on the 64 controller, which felt the same as any other button, or the PS2 controller shoulder buttons I use for my emulator.

It could be because it's Losers bracket, Neo actually mains both Marth and Roy together, and he knows that Marth is better.
