I own rabbits, and it's sad to see this little one tied down. Their body tissues bruise so easily, and their arms are practically just skin and bone by their paws. I have angoras, and I know there's a better way. If they trust you, they'll sit long enough for a trim.
@iamkiarawr However, this is still humane. It's been approved and it's the best way if they aren't your pets, but rather part of your livelihood... When you have twenty+ rabbits to trim four times a year, waiting for them to sit for you isn't going to work.
these ignorant people and their stupid comments. have you ever owned a rabbit before? no? then shut up. this lady knows what she is doing okay? the rabbit wasn't upset or distressed. geez calm down people
4. If you should ever just nick the skin of a rabbit with the scissors, it tears like thin paper. And even though they quietly enjoy the grooming, they can always make a sudden move and you nick them by accident. So tying them down seems like the safest and most comfortable way to free them of their fur.
2. Grooming is an important part of a rabbits social life so in fact they show appreciation when they take care of each others hair! Combing out or cutting your rabbits hair is like giving your partner a backrub.
3. angora rabbits shed, but they just don't "drop" their fur. If you don't pluck, comb or shear it off, they will get mats which are a breeding ground for flies (maggots eating into your skin, so much better than having a haircut) or the rabbit eats it and dies of constipation.
thanks jadu, for demonstrating that you have NO idea what you're talking about. 1. Taking care of one rabbit (he's my pet) is a lot of work, let along maintaining a farm! You are getting tired from working 8 hours in an office/store/workshop? Try spending your whole day feeding and taking care of a horde of rabbits to earn some money (yes, rabbit feed also costs money).
another way for those that have such a hard time watching this darling seem "helpless"---is it more humane to secure himi this way? or have a loose bunny that gets repeatedly nicked?? ya ever nick an animal's skin while clipping them? talk about GUILT!!! its a TERRIBLE feeling and poor things DONT EVER forget it and never stop squirming afterwards thinking it might happen again. this bunnys skin is nice and tautly stretched out and he's just as cool as a cucumber about it! SO CLEVER! LOVE it!
unlike cat, rabbits cannot cough up hairballs to rid themselves of it. they will ingest while cleaning and eventually die because of wool block...so they HAVE to be cut. ive read some of these comments and almost laughed out loud. i understand tender-hearts. those are the folks that have their dogs nails cut by someone else, or let them grow to unbelievable lengths because they cant bear to do it themselves. ;-)
this bunny is CHILLING!!! :-D if he was in ANY way stressed--it would SHOW!
if she left the hair on this rabbit it would die. They clean by licking their self like a cat... it would get wool block and die. You HAVE to shear them to save their life... they are NOT found in the wild ... they would have not survived.... and this is the best way to shear a rabbit. I bet you vote democrat!
this idiot woman finishes removing the poor rabbit's fur, and rather than releasing him from that horrible torture-like contraption as quick as possible, she just goes about camly doing other stuff.
It doesn't really look too different from locking up sheep so they can be sheared. I just wish the shearer would have stopped taking her lovely time doing whatever with the fur and released the bunny out of that position.
Rabbits have very delicate thin skin with many folds..You definitely don't want them Hoping into your shear or scissors..If you only keep a few you can take your time and hand clip but that not very practical if your trying to make a living from it.
@KevinPembo123 But look at how calm this guy is. If he was in pain or very afraid, he would be kicking and crying. He kinda sorta looks like he loves it -- it must feel SO great to get rid of all that hair on a hot day! And I'm sure he gets treats after, so it's allll good no doubt. It is also okayed by the SPCA, the experts in animal safety. I think he's okay!
sheep get sheared in sort of the same way except they're more likely to end up with cuts. if animals like this dont get sheared they'll die because the fur rapidly covers their eyes and they'll either starve get lost, or get dehydrated.
Seriously! WTF is wrong with people? We NEVER have to bind rabbits to shear them. This woman is inhumane, uneducated, barbaric, and seriously pissing me off. There is a REASON why this is hard to watch. The only reason why she shears rabbits this way is because it easier ON HER, not the rabbits.
This is ridiculous. Of course it is unnecessary to bind a rabbit like that. If you use extra hours on handclip a rabbit, then one should learn more about rabbits. There are very simple, humane and rapid methods to clip rabbits. Sure it's easier for the owner to bind the rabbit - but humane is it certainly not.
I have a rabbit myself and my first thought was like some others, that this seemed terribly stressful for the rabbit.. but looking closely her body language (ear position and such) doesn't look quite as stressed as I would have thought, though I wouldn't say she likes it. My rabbit looks more scared than that when I hold her still to clip her nails, though... Also rabbits do naturally lie with their legs stretched behind them like that when they're relaxed.

Having scissor sheared Angora's I have to say "I WANT!" Rabbits have fragile spinal structures, and can permanently paralyze themselves by kicking out too strongly, which they do when you flip them onto their backs to clip the bellies. (and yes, they do have to have their bellies clipped, or else they can get wool block and die) This method is so much safer! And it was under 10 minutes. Wow! My poor rabbits have to put up with hours of clipping from me.
Someone bitch slap those people.. I feel for that rabbit she just tosses it around (so to speak) like a rag doll.. and the way she pulled the ears back.. OMG.. I have read the comments I dont care if this is the safest way or not.. she could be a little more caring about it .. since it took so long to do the damn video. She should of been taking care of the bunny better. I feel for it.
These rabbits live for well over 7 years, and need to be clipped 4 times a year. This is the correct way to clip an angora, it is the safest, and most humane. Angora rabbits are bred to be docile and pleasant. You can hand clip them, and try to position them stretched out - but it often can take hours. This way of clipping is the fastest. When you read a garment tag and it says "angora" it came from a rabbit, Mohair - Angora goat
I have 6 angoras. Actually scissoring increases the chances of a nip w/ the scissors. I've done it both ways, the shearer is faster and way safer. I do not tie them up, but in a way she has a point about the wrinkles - they have tons of them. The haircuts goes faster if they are held in place. On your lap they can move and get nipped by a scissor. If the rabbit were wriggling, I'd be concerned. They rabbits obviously do not mind it. I would say she only has them this way for 10 min. tops.

This is sick. The proper way to harvest the fur from a German Angora is to use shearing scissors, not clippers. And you do it while holding the rabbit on your lap, not the torture device seen here.
no, you can use clippers also, the "German Red, Angora Blade" are clippers made just for clipping angora, but cost several hundred dollars, also that is not a torture device, German Angoras are exceptionally docile, and this way of holding them keeps the skin taut so as to not be in the way of clippers or scissors. This is a commercial establishment and they can afford the better equipment.
