My 160GB iPod Classic suddenly went completely dead on me just now, completely black, no response whatsoever.
I've just gone to iPod Classic Trouble Shooting Assistant online and found this:
2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Sorry to read that, Tiny, I'm afraid it might prove to be a more "terminal" problem in your case then - this cold restart fix I proposed (and which Apple has on its own website) has clearly helped a lot of others already.
Had any problems with iPods before ? Mine has been working fine again for months now after that single breakdown I had. Any shop that you can go to, or contact online ?

Hate to say this, but get the itouch 4 like mine. I have the 32gb or either take the classic to a near APPLE STORE so that they can fix it. I have the touch 4 nd now I am waiting until I get the classic that you have.
look online,they have kits for like 15 bucks that open ur ipod and come with a battery for u to put in them,id rather waste 115 bucks on an experiment trying to fix it then pay another 200 bucks,im gonna try it once i get the money,cause my gf's ipod shit the bed and my old 30gig did awhile back

It's Apple's sneaky way of stealing money out of the consumer's pocket because they KNOW the buyer would rather have the classic with more memory and costs less than the touch.
These things are suck shit.. I bought one on my birthday back in March and now it's in pieces.. first of all i replaced the screen.. fine.. only problem.. the metal plate was bent like a bitch after trying to open up the ipod for like two days.. i then super glued it on and after a while I was going to re glue it.. so i took it out from the glue.. and .. bang the logic board in the ipod battery connecter came loose.. im going to save up for a new one but good thing i had my nano haha :)
hold the 'select' batton and the 'manu' botton in the same ti me...and then it should rebouth the system of the ipod...or your realy unluky and you bought 2 chrshed ipods.
hold in the center button and the menu button, then when u see the apple logo hold the center button and the play button (Puts it in disk mode) Then hook it up to itunes and restore it

@imstillnumber1 yea, li-ion batteries will lose a certain percentage of battery copacity after every recharg, its not the charging that does it but the draining so if ya can get a little ihome and plug it in every night cause keepin it fully charged could help extend the life of the battery
If not reset, Its the logic board. Logic board= the mother board and when that goes down youre screwed. There are web sites you can send that bad boy into and they will fix it. Lookup iPod replacement parts but the logic board will cost $99+
I am now possibly going onto my fourth ipod.....the first two died and were replaced under warranty and now i am out of warranty on the third and it has broken......i might get a touch instead and just give this fight against broken ipods.....

well some times mine will freeze just let it go dead all the way and then let it sit on the charger the whole day and don't mess with it it works for me maybe for you

Just reset it dude, flip the hold switch on and off, then hold the menu and center button together until the apple logo appears, then you should be set. Happened to me before, reseting it fixes it
mine done the same thing and GAHH i had 10GB of music on it :( and when i shake it . my ipod rattles :( it was working fine then it forze reset it self and then all the music had gone and wont respod to the charger and keeps resetting itself.
Okay look try this,use your long finger nail try to introduce your nail in the hold in the bottom slow and easy move the little board down remember slow end easy plug it back and see if charge,
My iPod classic black 80GB did the same thing yesterday after 3 years of owning it. It made this hum from the speakers and was froze so i did MENU and Select reset and it turned off and never came back on. I plugged it into the computer and it doesnt even show up or turn on. iTunes doesnt even show it. the wall adapter doesnt even do anything. All the support sites say "if this icon appears on the screen it means this.." but NOTHING comes up. NOTHING happens. I fear its done for ever.
@RWC26 well i took it to a local ipod repair buisness to have it looked at and they told me it was a motherboard issue and its junk. i dont know what they did to it however so they may have just run a stupid pug-in tool to diagnose and nothing happened so they assume its a motherboard issue. i dont really know. im going to find a cheap one on ebay or yard sale and swap out the hard drives to see if it still works at all.

the guy at the apple store said it could be that one of the 2 ipods hard drives
died completely, he told us they can die at any waking moment, so he sed either recycle it or look for a store where they can replace the hard drive, i hope this helps
@playerblaze600 look at the date of the video it was in 2007... he probably got a new ipod by now. But that is the best way to fix them used that tactic many times.

while u were working out it probably bounced around a lot and shut off, give it a while and it should turn back on. I had the same probably when i mowed the lawn

@guslb12did you try this exact procedure-> out on flat surface, slide the lock button back and forth, then press and hold the "play, and action (center) " button at the same time. does it show up in iTunes? if it does then click on the restore button in iTunes. one more question... what operating system are you running? Windows... or Mac? I could help fix it! =D
Leave it to charge for awhile (I prefer a wall charger for iPods which need to be revived). Once it's got some juice (30min to half an hour later) try and turn it on. Let us know what happens. Also, hold it to your ear and take note of any hard drive noises (whirring, clicking, wheezing). I've have an old 4th generation that I've revived several times.
I need help. What does it mean if its wheezing when I try reseting it? It starts out fine then the apple icon(which isnt lit up)fades and it makes a spinning noise then you hear a wheezing noise
It means the hard drive arm is not reading the disc (if you want to see this in action, search "click of death" on Youtube). To revive your iPod, let it charge for a little while and then turn it on. When the sad face appears on the screen and it "wheezes", smack it firmly against the palm of your hand a few times. This will usually knock the arm back into place, and your iPod will come right back to life.
when it dies completely u have to leave it plugged in for a little bit till the battery can get enough power in it to power on the device. i had to do this when i bought a replacement battery so yea just try leaving it plugged in for about 30 mins or so jsut to make sure it is getting power to the battery then check it. it should turn on automatically when it gets enough power if not then try using the way ur surpossed to turn on the ipod.
M2 i have the same damn problem ,,, actually i waited until the end of the ipod's life battery and then there was such like a message on it or just like waring that i need 2 charging it gain then i did that, so it was work then, just wait until the low battery ,that's my opinion dude ,,,anyway i hope u already fix it ;)
it sounds like the soft ware is dead, i had similar problems, take it to an apple store, if its still under wanrrenty then u should be able to get it replaced

Yea i had my video and everytime i would listen to it some songs would be short or it would just stop the song and go to the next one.. Or it would just freeze and shut off. Sometimes it would stay frozen and i couldn't reset it and i had to let it die.. So i got tired of it and gave it to myt cuzzins.. Theres a lot of problems with this model..

yeah men i had the same problem it scared the shit out of me but then someone on youtube told me to hold the middle and menu buttons for about 6 to 10 sec and it worked hahahahaha i was sooooooo happy!1 whooooooohoooooooooooo

ALRIGHT just hold down the middle of the weel and the menu button at the same time. it probaly just froze i feel ur pain it happend to me so many times.but next time just get the ipod touch. thats what i did

@guslb12did you try this exact procedure-> out on flat surface, slide the lock button back and forth, then press and hold the "play, and action (center) " button at the same time. If that does not work maybe you should look it up of apple forums. their are are other options but they a little more in-depth. let me know exactly what happens when you do the procedure and i will see if i can help. send a fiend invite so we can try to fix this through youtube inbox instead of comments. thx

Be sure you're usb port isn't broken. I plugged my ipod into it and shorted it out because the tab was broken inside. Cheap b****** at dell.

Leave it to charge for awhile (I prefer a wall charger for iPods which need to be revived). Once it's got some juice (30min to half an hour later) try and turn it on. Let us know what happens. Also, hold it to your ear and take note of any hard drive noises (whirring, clicking, wheezing). I've have an old 4th generation that I've revived several times.

I need help. What does it mean if its wheezing when I try reseting it? It starts out fine then the apple icon(which isnt lit up)fades and it makes a spinning noise then you hear a wheezing noise

It means the hard drive arm is not reading the disc (if you want to see this in action, search "click of death" on Youtube). To revive your iPod, let it charge for a little while and then turn it on. When the sad face appears on the screen and it "wheezes", smack it firmly against the palm of your hand a few times. This will usually knock the arm back into place, and your iPod will come right back to life.

when it dies completely u have to leave it plugged in for a little bit till the battery can get enough power in it to power on the device. i had to do this when i bought a replacement battery so yea just try leaving it plugged in for about 30 mins or so jsut to make sure it is getting power to the battery then check it. it should turn on automatically when it gets enough power if not then try using the way ur surpossed to turn on the ipod.

M2 i have the same damn problem ,,, actually i waited until the end of the ipod's life battery and then there was such like a message on it or just like waring that i need 2 charging it gain then i did that, so it was work then, just wait until the low battery ,that's my opinion dude ,,,anyway i hope u already fix it ;)

it sounds like the soft ware is dead, i had similar problems, take it to an apple store, if its still under wanrrenty then u should be able to get it replaced

welcome to my world,same thing happend with mine,exept mine the first time did a strange noise and i reset and then doesnt do a thing,but is sometimes that turns on and mostly turn on only showing the apple logo,and yea must be the battery that you need to change it cause when my ipod turn on the menu sometimes it said connect to power and turned off itself after i disconnect it

Yea i had my video and everytime i would listen to it some songs would be short or it would just stop the song and go to the next one.. Or it would just freeze and shut off. Sometimes it would stay frozen and i couldn't reset it and i had to let it die.. So i got tired of it and gave it to myt cuzzins.. Theres a lot of problems with this model..
