Cleo is sooooo argumentative (always). Seems that poor Burton found his downfall when he married Taylor. The movies seems a portent of the future for him.
Cleopatra should've also strengthened Egypt's military prowess during her reign and make some advancements to them, then she and Antony probably would've won in the end!
@Mandinko23 She kept trying to turn Antony into someone he wasn't, which was a great general like Caesar. Big mistake for her ot try that. Antony wasn't as ambitious as she was.
In reality Cleopatra was neither young nor attractive. Antonius was mad. Some of the comments suggest Ceasar was a great man - have these fools no respect for democracy? The BEST system. Ceasar destroyed Romes democracy and brought about the terror of the principate - Caligula, Tiberius having sex with prepubescent boys. Read Syme's "roman revolution", Ceasar, Octavianus and Antonius destroyed Rome. Ceasar conquered free people just because he could - is that greatness? I don't believe it is.
Rome was not a democracy, it was a Republic, in which the rich and powerful ruled the Senate. There was a reason why Caesar's forces were called the "Populares". They were supported by the people, and it wasn't just propaganda.
Cleopatra should have hooked up with Octavian. They thought alike and had the same ambitions and mindset, however much Cleopatra denied it to herself.
@canadarox14 The real Octavian and Cleo probably would've seen each other as possible allies yet their differences and hatred for each other would've got in the way of them.
Augustus always sought the appearance of legitimacy. To rule with the approval of the people required a Roman wife. The seduction of Julius Caesar and Anthony was seen as being disloyal to the Roman state. Octavian understood this.
@TheNuharoo Ikr! I've often pictured them being great partners however they were a lot alike, as the saying goes "opposites attract and identicals repell."
@HistoryLover1550 I think Cleopatra, this time around, wanted to choose and then mold a partner into what she wanted, but with disastrous results. Octavian admitted to himself what he was and what he wanted and Cleopatra didn't. That is why she lost and Octavian won.
@TheNuharoo They did not have the same mindset. Octavian saw a world, ruled by Rome & Rome alone. He saw a world with Rome at it's center. He thought only of the West. Only of the proper world, the new world. Caesar & Cleopatra saw a new world. Where the West and East could be united. A new empire based on the vision of Alexander the Great whom they both shared great admiration and affection. Where the old and new could be mixed. Antony understood that vision and shared it with Cleopatra.
Technically he never took the title of Emperor. He took the title of "First Citizen" but had absolute power. He deserved it and proved to be a wise and great leader. He didn't die a bloody and horrible death fortunately.
Octavian, later Augustus Caesar, was a brilliant politician who let the Roman people call for the war he was ready, single handedly, to fight. Later, he professed to love the republic, while

I wish the Donations of Alexandria were shown in this movie, where Antony gave territories to his 3 kids by Cleo.

In Part 17, she said...
"Perhaps consult with your superior in Rome...Octavian...Caesar Octavian
"You will kneel, on your knees.
I asked it of Julius Caesar, I demand it of you." You have NOT been dismissed.
We women know what to say to get under a man's skin...both to irritate and intoxicate him. Great delivery.
