  • @Snakebite105 It's still a happier ending than in the book. :P

  • I always get teary eyed during the reprise of Heaven's Light, mainly because heartbreak is no stranger to someone like me. :'(

  • I sang this so much as a kid I knew the entire Latin chant. I actually knew the WORDS (my mother pointed them out because she knows Latin). Me and my baby sister use to kill it!

Sometimes Disney villain songs are the best songs in the movie. Hellfire is the first in my top 3, the others being Be Prepared and Poor Unfortunate Souls.

  • Hell fire is the best villain song in Disney history...

  • @thedarkpoet26 Not just that, it is also the most epic song in Disney history...

  • @13CrimsonFox well...its also competing with the end of The Bells of Notre Dame... but yes--most epic villain song by FAR

  • 3:07 :D

  • i want the song the starts in 1:43 :') i love it :3, can anyone please give me a link to that choir ?

  • @MoRoJ611 The Name Of The Hymn Is "Confitor" It Means "I Confess" Here's The Whole Prayer: I Confess To Almighty God, To You My Brothers And Sisters, In What I Have Done And What I Have Failed To Do, And I Ask The Blessed Mary Ever Virgin, All The Angels And Saints, And To You My Brothers And Sisters, To Pray For Me To The Lord Our God Amen. Hope That Helped!!!

  • I love the contrast between their voices.

    hnnngh

  • This is the ultimate song of the Knight Templar--a character who believes he or she is God's advocate and kills in His name. I'm a Christian, but I find those characters to be fascinating.

  • @TLSoulDude The odd thing is that the Templar Order was initiated to protect Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land from bandits in the early 12th Century, and then two centuries later they were accused of all sorts of heinous crimes. And the Templars aren't the only ones who did it. There were plenty of others, Christians and non-Christians, who killed and still kill in the name of God.

  • @SaenWyrWulf

I think all the mayhem that's been going on in the Middle East is testament to that killing in God's name is still happening.

  • @CrimsonRoseOfDanube This is true, but they still did illegal things.

  • reminds me of a few veggie tales about the whole beauty is in the heart and spirit is what matters to God

  • In my opinion, it's hard for other disney soundtracks to compete with this masterpiece <3 the depth in the lyrics and the mystery in the instrumentation. just makes me get the chills :)

  • One of Disney's darkest songs and one of it's most beautiful.

  • I'd say I'm surprized by this, but I'm not.

Hellfire really dominated the subject of these comments.

Then again, it's the best song in the movie.

  • Can we stop with the religious debate?

I am an aithiest, but I don't care what religion others follow. That is for them to decide. Although I do agree that this movie was made to be a statment against the political powers of the church and religious hypocrisy, there is no need to compare the acts of few to the whole. I, of all people, should understand how unfair that is.

  • I find the movie version much more intense

  • Hugo wanted to show everyone was human. Everyone, even the church would fall to lustful desires and go mad with power. Greed, lust, envy, pride, you name it. Not a single soul is safe from this, regardless of whether they are rich, poor, Religious, or scientist.

  • This is just a great song, it makes me want to bone the nearest gypsy (no not really, but its passionate and dark)!

The only part of it that makes me want to not do anything stupid, well Frollo is singing it that's why! It makes me want to pay attention to the lyrics all the more, and makes me want to be a better person.

Although the sin potentual is there for me to do, I just don't do it.

  • Story of my life.

  • that ending always gives me goosebumps. It's such an epic song

  • Now why can't any girls sing this song about me? ;~;

  • i love it how both songs have been used in CelestiaxDiscord Comics and are right next to each other on here :)

  • beautiful movie with beautiful music!!!! i loved it!!!

  • heavens light is so sad...gots me in tears right now!

  • I need a separate iPod just for Disney incredible songs like these..

  • @trewerd don't even. The ending in the book is much worse. All three of them die, Phoebus dumps esmeralda for some broad, plus right after esmeralda is reunited with her birth mother after sixteen years separate, they are both killed by the mob.

  • I love how after Quazimodo sings about heaven's light he rings the bells and it is the same tune as hell fire but it is so light and happy and then frollo sings and it becomes really dark and heavy. the music in this movie is so powerful.

  • I grew up on this. Now, I see kids growing up on High School Musical.

    Disney. WTF happened to you?

  • That chord at 4:34 is just... ooh. Shivers every single time. its why i listen to it so much. I love this movie. I'm only 13 and i get all the meanings in here lol. This is when Disney had the balls to do stuff. :D

  • so let me get this straight.....

Frollo is singing this song and worked up over a boner?

  • "No face as hideous as my face was ever meant for heaven's light."

Oh, don't say that Quazi. You're so beautiful. That line is so achingly sad, I cry every time.

  • @BattyKellen Not to mention you can hear his voice shake like he's about to cry.... it chokes me up every time!

  • Just came over from watching a DiscordxCelestia animation with this song. *sigh* I love it so!

  • @rabidphantomfan *Brohoof*

  • @GuitarRocker2008 *EquestriaGirlhoof*

  • @rabidphantomfan rewind so your a Pegasis a Phantom fan and enjoy Disney movies?...are you single? :)

  • @GuitarRocker2008 Fortunately yes! But unfortunately I'm also asexual. That means I like to friend-zone everyone. ;)

  • One sings of love. One sings of lust. Oddly enough, none of them gets the girl. The man with no song does.

  • @trewerd

Just shows you don't have to be a Beiber to get the ladies.

  • @trewerd It's Kevin freaking Kline. Of course he gets the girl.

  • @trewerd You're right, but Quasi does in the 2nd film

  • @trewerd Ya because the girl never picks the ugly guy.

  • 2:20-5:21

I HATE BEING BORN A GIRL!! I WANT TO BE A BOY!!

i want to have a voice like Tony Jay so f-ing bad!!!

  • 0:39-1:24

i'm 19 and that part made me cry like i was 7 years old again. Disney was very beautiful and sensitively epic back then. I'm glad to be born in the 90's

  • Dark and evil lust, but yet so beautiful.

  • @kokochan39 you must enjoy Frollo's obsession the reason I chose not to love Heaven's light hellfire is because Frollo's obsession with gyspy problem

  • 1:40 for those who want to jump straight into Hellfire...

  • @stormofIoyalty

you might want to rephrase that sentece.... :O

  • @DCdabest nah. my point is clear enough bro

  • This song scared me as a kid. Now that I'm older......Tony Jay's voice is working it's magic.

  • R.I.P. Tony Jay. What a magnificent voice.

  • this is wrong because its lust and not church material

  • @mikemelvyn1634 So a crush on someone who is nice to you is lustful and bad? O.o;;

  • @mikemelvyn1634 Oh, uh, did you mean Frollo's part? o-o;;

  • I...had a trouble with the fireplace

  • Frollo's last few lines and the ensuing Latin choir (God have mercy on her/ God have mercy on me) sound absolutely awesome on the organ. :D

  • I just wish those gargoyles never made the cut, or at least got downplayed.

  • @Fiddlewheel I want them to remake this film, gargoyless.

  • @Fiddlewheel They seem silly now, but I remember as a kid they were the only reason I watched this movie. My lil brothers watch this movie with me and laugh at the Gargoyles and enjoy the movie as much as I do. I just saying it is Disney, but yes the Gargoyles are quite annoying.

  • @RayeOfSunshine93

Yeah, your right about that part, as a kid you have a easier outlook on things like this, and it is an rarity for me to even care about annoying characters, but I didn't really care for them as a kid neither, I felt they were in the way.

  • I think Frollo is all worked up because he has a boner

    Big Whoop

  • A novel by Victor Hugo + beauty of '90s Disney animation + a score by Alan Menken = EPICNESS!

Seriously, they need to bring back movies like this. I would love to see the creative team (directors, animators, Alan Menken, etc) that made this movie reunite to adapt other great works. Imagine what they could do with "The Phantom of the Opera" or Victor Hugo's other great drama of disfigurement, "The Man Who Laughs" if they were allowed to be as brave and daring as they were with "Hunchback"!

  • dammit why does fucking justin bieber and HSM get all the thumbs up while classics like this are bieing left to...well rot! this was the movie that proved at one point that disney had brass balls bigger then even don bluth during the 80's!

  • 1:40 second song

  • most underrated Disney movie ever

  • @AnnaKin nah its not underated at all, considered by most to be the best of the goldne years of diney animated films, thing that brings it down is that its a little too adult for a kids film, or even a animated one at that.

  • Y'know, I'm trying to feel sympathetic to Frollo an' all, but he really could have went a better way about it. I'm pretty sure setting France on fire was a weeeeee bit overkill.

  • The end of Heaven's Light sounds alot like Christmas to me.

  • 1:41

I Confess O God Protect Me From Sin

Blessed Virgin Mary And St. Peter

Blessed Archangel Michael (i can't figure out the rest!!) :(

  • @bobfari I confess to God Almighty, To the Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, To the Blessed Archangel Michael, to the Holy Apostles, to all the Saints. you weren't that far off.

  • Apparently, Quasimodo wasn't the only one feeling the love tonight...

  • Whoa. Somebody has issues. And its NOT Quasi.

  • Censure can suck it, we need movies like this back. Tangled has given me hope, though.

  • @TalesofGirl4ever How on earth did Tangled give you hope? >_>

  • @OneDarkAutumn Why question someones happiness? Leave them be.

  • I FUCKING LOVE YOU ALAN MENKEN

  • If you haven't already, check out my extended bell sequence of this song (it's the only video I've got posted). Heaven's Light and the Hunchback deserves more recognition!

  • If only the Jungle Book was like that. Still have funny characters, but make the story a bit dark (not to dark for the kids). the Jungle Book should have been that like in the Lion King (dark, but not too dark).

  • It's amazing when you contrast these two songs--Quasi singing about pure love and the peace it brings to him, and Frollo singing about the sickest lust and how it drives him to the worst evils.

  • @scottski02 Part of the genius of Disney. It's good to know that someone else appreciates it. :)

  • @Nostalgia1920 it creates a community of us

  • If anyone wants to see something ironic: Look up the lyrics and find out what all that latin means between Frollo's verses.

  • Listening to this in a thunderstorm.<3 =)

  • i went out and bought this dvd because of the music.i love alan menken

  • I believe that animated films are not just for kids, there is something in there for adults to learn from...

  • QUASI's voice was greatness....i was with him on the Heaven's light....then, i love the song Hellfire greatness...that man was lusting after Esmerelda....smh lol...he never got none in his life

  • Wowowowowo *-*

  • The Latin chanting on Hellfire is the Confiteor, a prayer of confession. Oh, the irony. :)

  • epic song, one of disney greatest

  • Wait. This is so epic. I literally cannot handle it.

    MUST. STOP. REPLAYING.

    Resistance is futile.

  • Wowwww frollo put that away this a kids by movie

  • Now THIS is the kind of wholesome material to feed your children.

  • It's a little known fact that one of Frollo's descendants lost his car keys and caused the great Chicago fire to find them.

  • @matrixinterface oh, dude, that is in terrible taste.

  • @matrixinterface Everytime I see this comment I burst out laughing lol

  • @matrixinterface - Dude, that's amazing. xDD

  • @matrixinterface I would say Too Soon, but seeing as how long it has been, i think its good.

  • @matrixinterface The Great Chicago Fire occurred on October 10, 1871, 10 years before the automobile was invented.

  • @MichizukiMangos carrage keys??

  • @MichizukiMangos That is possible because Frollo is a BAMF like that.

  • @MichizukiMangos It's a little known fact that Frollo's descendant was actually a companion to Dr. Who.

  • @matrixinterface its a little known fact that one of Frollo's decendants ordered the bread from the bakery that started the Great Fire Of London, and provided Nero with the fiddle while Rome burned :D

  • "Fireplace"

So, that's what they call it nowadays, eh?

  • Best. Villain. Song. EVER!!!

  • @charlottevictorias It's one of my favourite parts in the entire movie. While people may overlook them, everytime I watch this film or am reminded of it, it's that bell segment that I remember the most. For me, that IS the movie.

  • Frollo needs a fap.

  • some ppl do confess in church about having "sinful thoughts" about ppl

if primal instincts of attraction are an affront to God then no ones getting into Heaven :P

  • this is practically Frollo's first time having a boner, which is why he is throwing a tantrum in front of his fireplace

  • @Through011 I don't know! He's just DOESN'T understand the sexual pleasures he's going through!

  • Frodo = Wrong movie...?....

  • Amazing lyrics.

The young innocent man sees a lovely woman as a heavenly delight, but the old pious man sees an attractive woman as a cunning siren witch who uses his own libido to trick him into the furnace of Hell.

I'm sure Frollo wishes he could be like Quasimodo and just be happy not worrying about Christian morals... But he simply cannot lose his knowledge of sin, so is cursed to endure the torture of sexual repression and hypocritical guilt. No amount of religion can save him from that.

  • @TheShadowOfMars

    Slightly reminds me of Snape.

Poor him. Got killed by a snake. SCREW VOLDEMORT!!!!!

  • @TheShadowOfMars the ammount of religion required to save him from that sounds like it should be -1, hes repressing his sexuality and feeling guilty about it because the religion he follows tells him he should

  • @TheShadowOfMars Whoa, whoa, whoa, the Christian morals aren't the problem here. Frollo's a sadistic nutcase. End of story.

  • @camptowngirl only in the disney version. In the actual novel (which is SO much more pessimistic about human kind), he's a complete anti hero and tragic villian, given he willingly chose (as archdeacon, he wasn't some judge) to adopt and raise Quasimodo as his son, hated the idea of Esmeralda dying and wasn't just a sadistic monster, far from it; He also lost both his parents to the plague and most of what money he spends goes to his alcoholic brother

  • @Jakezing ...is this supposed to be related to the previous comments? If so, I'm not sure what your point is. If not, then...ok. I haven't read the book, so I'll reserve judgement on it and its portrayal of the characters for a time that I have. Sound fair? I really don't want to start some kind of fight.

  • @camptowngirl

Yeah, never question your way of superstition, even if obvious christianfags are obvious christianfags. (Btw I have no problems with homosexuals, only with christianfags)

  • @sceptiquele ._. You'll have to forgive me for not understanding. Who was talking about homosexuals...?

  • @camptowngirl

No one, I just wanted to make clear that with "christianfags" I only mean "christianfag". You can be a fag without being a homosexual. And my point was that this song is quite critical of Christian moral hypocrisy as the original book by Victor Hugo has been.

  • @sceptiquele Assuming you've read the previous comments, I've already said I've never read the book. Therefore I am not going to say anything about the book. However I would argue that this song is about the moral hypocrisy of a single man, not an entire religion. I think that's the mistake people are making here...

*prays this doesn't cause some sort of riot*

  • @AshleytheDragon -.- You do realize this is what I meant, right?

  • @AshleytheDragon Stop trolling.

  • @AshleytheDragon

What bold judgements and generalizations you make

  • Comment removed

  • @AshleytheDragon um, thank you for the insult. I'm Christian and I'm not evil.

  • @AshleytheDragon It looks like some folks don't understand what facetious means...

  • @camptowngirl In responese to Chirstain morals Well you have the first line "you know i am a rightous man of my virtue i am justly proud" "I so much purer then the common vulgar .." and "Its not my fault, Its in God's plan"

  • @lennaylennay2 Frollo says those things because HE believes them. Most Catholics (believe me, I'm Catholic) don't think their sins are caused by God or even their religion as a whole. It's the opposite--turning away from it. Frollo just has some kind of chemical imbalance in his brain.

  • @Rockstarpenguin13 THANK YOU >.<

  • @lennaylennay2 *sigh* That's exactly what I mean. Those words indicate what an arrogant, condescending hypocrite he is. And the second set of lyrics you mention only helps your argument if that were true. But it's not. In any way, shape, or form. Can people please leave me alone now? -.-

  • @camptowngirl Yah and he's in a position where he can use good Christian people, and turn them against people that he doesn't like.

That was one of the points that Victor Hugo wanted to make in the novel. That the Chruch was corrupted and whoever was in the position to turn on people, did it with a flip of a switch (or just brainwashing people into thinking that someone was a witch).

  • R.I.P Tony Jay :,(

  • I wish Heaven's Light was longer! =/

  • Songs like these deserve way more credit. I think it's a beautiful song.

  • I love how the latin words of the prayer contrast with the rest of the song. And the greek at the end, Kyrie eleison.

i wish we'd sing it like that at church. Church would be so epic.

  • @ginnoveffect GODdamm Right!!! XD

  • Frollo.... JUST HAVE A WANK!

  • Mom thinks "Hellfire" is the reason why I wanted the movie. She's partially right.

  • Okayy, something's wrong with the french. There's The Phantom of the Opera, Beauty and the Beast, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. What do all of these stories have in common?

  • @XxAniketosxX I see what you mean, but my first thought was that they all have amazing musicals taking place in them.

  • @XxAniketosxX Being amazing. That's what they have in common.

  • Frollo playing pokemon: "Be mine or you will burn!"

  • I'm surprised this film got a U certificate from the BBFC O.o If it were me, I'd would've given it a PG.

  • @AllTimeJedLife A... U? what's a U- I mean, I get that it's a rating of film, like M or R... but what's a U?

  • @itachifan1243 The american equivalent of a G

  • @itachifan1243 According to the BBFC, "U" means "Universal". It is the British equivalent of a G-rating.

  • @KBAFourthtime *Claps* as a Brit, I can confirm you are correct good sir.

  • @gbindahouse94 I got it from Wikipedia, and I have no idea how long ago.

  • Listening to this song just reminds me how mesmerizied I used to be by these songs....and still am XD

  • I read an article on cracked.com and they said Frollo was singing about raping and killing esmeralda...did I miss that part? o.O

  • @InachiSasuke91 Kinda. He was singing about how she was tempting him to commit sin, so either she needs to die and go to hell...or be his forever more (and he'll take what he wants).

  • @InachiSasuke91 Rape or kill, not both.

  • I LOVE this song duo on it's own, but I like the sound of it better a half step up

  • It's not my fault! (Est mea culpa--it is my fault)

I'm not to blame! (Maxima culpa)

  • @OrionoftheStar "through my most grievous fault"

  • @Mirani2 Well, that's one translation. I was thinking "greatest fault", but I didn't write it out because I thought the 'Maxima' showed it enough. But yours sounds more poetic than mine :p
