  • S'not amplified. If have a true, finely crafted mandolin, it's notes will echo a loud, ringing, very characteristic to mandolin.

  • Wow, I need a mandoline.

  • did you plug this mandolin in an amp or something? it sounds kinda amplified. Awesome cover!

  • Do you have any advice for a guitar playing attempting to learn the mandolin? I would love to hear it!

  • Jim I think your version of this song is better than the original! You're extremely talented and I want to be able to play this song as close as I can to your version. Please let me know any and all chords/ tab info I could get from you. Thank you for posting this wonderful work of music to share with world. TUG...

  • Genius. Pure. Thanks for all your hard work preserving these musical treasures. You're way ahead of your time. All your recordings are classic and ingenious... thanks again :)

  • I've been playing mandolin for a few years. Every time I hit a wall or lack inspiration I come back to something Jim has done and and I'm inspired once again. I love bluegrass, but Jim makes it possible to learn all the stuff you really want to play but were afraid to ask! I'm sure I'm not the only other mandolin player in the world who owes Jim a big thank you.

  • That's incredible man. Well played.

  • hey I have some questions if you wouldn't mind answering. I'm a guitar/bass guitar player, but I recently acquired an antic mandolin because of some events that happened. The instrument is still in relatively good shape so I tuned it with some difficulty (standard GDAE) and started playing it. I got the chords and notes down pretty well but my fingers are still damn long from guitar, so is there any good way to play when my fingers can hardly fit on the fingerboard?

  • and as a follow up to my previous post, I'd like to clean the instrument without damaging it because by my guess it has never been cleaned (100 yr old mandolin) and I have my typical body/neck guitar cleaning stuff, but I am hesitant about using it because it might degrade the value. I've also thought that it might just be too old to permit ease of playing so I might hang it up and then buy a new one for playing. So what could I clean it with, and if I were to buy a new one, what is a good brand?

  • I'm sold, I'm buying one. I just gotta learn how to play it. I can play a guitar so this can't be that hard

  • Unreal

  • Thank you so much for this video and tab. Just fantastic.

  • I can't find the tabs on your website, could ya' help me out?

and absolutly beautiful playing, I only wish I could play like you some day. :)

  • sweet baby jesus that was fun to watch and listen to. Thank you for sharing your talent with everyone. If you take requests, please lay some dire straits on us. If not, we'll gladly listen to what you want to share.

  • @alderaforall Sounds good. I've been thinking of working up some Knopfler stuff. One of my favorite songwriters and guitarists. Actually one I've been thinking of for National tenor guitar is Les Boys.

  • mine is a 1920 a Gibson started to try and sing wile playing think I need a second brain

  • pretty cool

  • Im hoping to take up mandolin soon, i play guitar, bass and many other instruments. Is your thickest string E or G? im pretty sure its backwards from a guitar. thanks for doing this song :D

  • @TenYearsGone10 It is backwards from guitar. The thickest string being a G. Smallest (or first) string is the E. Just like a Violin. :D

  • from top to bottom g d a e . got my 1rst mandolin a couple days ago. love it. bit harder than it looks i cant get comfortable with it. makes my wrist hurt..

  • Jim, I can't see the headstock-- would love to know what mandolin you're playing. (It has a few unusual features that make it a little harder to ID... scooped extension, no truss rod cover...)

Does your pal Kimble make an F4?

  • It's a '26/'27 Gibson F2 that I used to own (and John Reischmann owned before me). Yes, there is a truss rod--you can see the cover on the headstock. Reischmann had the old fretboard removed and one with an extreme radius installed by Michael Heiden.

Yes Will makes oval hole instruments and has made an F4. Don't know if he'd still take a custom order for something like that.

  • You are awesome!

  • Jim what plectrum do you use?

  • ProPlec

  • hey can i get the tab for this i love this song i would love too play it on my mandolion

  • First chord played = instant favorite. Nice job

  • 5/5. I usually don't like mandolins, but this is very nice. Thank you.

  • thats awesome could you sent me the Tab ?

i would love to play it

  • This was an absolutely beautiful rendition, far better than I expected it to be. Thank you for playing one of my favourite songs so beautifully, it really was fantastic.

  • At 3:00 minutes, this goes from stellar to cosmic. Jim. You are incredible! Thanks for sharing.

  • If only videos like this could be watched more than some guy repeating three chords on a ukulele. Then you tube would actually be a vessel for real talent.

  • I watch a lot of Jim's stuff, as we all know he's an immensely talented individual, but no matter what he plays I find myself coming back time and again to this performance, it is utterly beautiful, thanks for sharing it with us.

  • Just wonderful! Thank you.

  • For some reason I can't not smile whle you play the main riff.

  • @alexohncoe Yeah man, it's one of the most pleasant riffs ever, gripping in context of the song... and he does such a great job of it on mandolin.

  • that last 550 views are from me. Yes this is a great song!

  • That round hole produces a beautiful tone, I'm trading in my Fs

  • what a beautiful instrument. and well played. thank you.

  • 5 effing stars my good man.

  • :} Thanks

  • awesome im a verry big zeppelin fan

  • it was great but the timing got on my nerves a little

  • man u are crazy & i like this...!that's what music needs!!this sound reminds me of a greek instrument called 'baglamas'!very nice job!

  • i need that tab.......please. that was amazing

  • nice work i imagine its gotta be hard 2 play da mini me guitar that good haha 1L

  • Jim,

I have to say, this is so beautifully played. I've been playing the mando for about four years but the past year has been terrible. I've had a problem with tendinitis in my left elbow. It's been really hard to not play at all over this time! It's refreshing to listen to your style and I've decided to start playing again slowly. I'm leaving my Ratliff R-5 in its case and playing my 64 Gibson 2-point A-5. I'm learning this arrangement, it is very addicting to me for some odd reason. Thanks!

  • I will get to practicing everyday because of your videos. You are a master.

  • I NEED TO LEARN THIS AMAZING INSTRUMENT! I PLAY GUITAR AND DRUMS ALREADY. omg, i love this sound. is a 70 dollar mandolin worth buying? for a starter

  • Absolutely not, they are cheap little things and you will not get the sounds you want. Go for one of the starter lines fender or epiphone offers.

  • Beautiful

  • wonderful... thanks...

  • goob stopping good your one hella playa

  • some chords are way off, but it's understandable because of the fact that he's playing it on a mandolin rather than a guitar.

  • I wouldn't say the chords are way off. As you pointed out, it is a matter of this being an arrangement for mandolin, not guitar. Chords are correct; it's the voicings of those chords that are different.

  • Well said, thank you and great work!

  • Jim is correct, the G chord sounds similar to the D chord on the guitar, and the D chord sounds likethe G. It is tuned like a guitar upside down.

  • i can't find the tab on ur site

  • sounds amazing friend

  • It's really cool!

But I can't find this tab on your website. Can you help me please!

  • I just went & listen to this song & you are in a different playing. sorry for my crewed notations, but as I said I don't read music. Can play it though. Zep's goes da da da di da, where you're going da da da de di. it's ok I guess, just prefer it Zep's way.

  • I could be wrong, but aren't you playing it in the wrong chord? I don't know how to read music, but it does sound like you're playing it in differently than Jimmy. Listen to your version & Jimmy's & tell me if I am right or wrong in what I am hearing

  • If you think you are good you are keep up that awesome picking you do more better things with that gidder than most people do on purpose!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is epic!

    im seriously a fan

this video got me back into zeppelin

  • Fantastic. Thanks so much for providing tabs for this and so much more. Much appreciated.

  • My favourite mandolin player in the world, Jim is the man.

  • amazing... you have real talent

  • Great ...Merveilleux Thank

  • sweeeeeeeet ......so well played..thanks for it!

  • Outstanding, brother, simply outstanding.

Any idea what tuning JP uses on his 6 strings for this song?

  • Standard...

  • jimmy uses dropped D.

and this is great thank you for sharing!

  • outstanding!

  • sweetest sounds of a mandolin !!!

  • outstanding

  • Please, for the love of god, tabs.

  • First line in the description.

    They're on his site.

  • wow.. thats freaking amazing... when i first starting watching i was like wtf is this... but after awhile i was amazed... lol possiably one of the best songs ever, and this cover is one of the best on youtube.

  • When I tripped for the first time, this song was in my head *all night long* ;)

  • huh?

  • I don't know how else to write that sentence so you'll understand? lol. It's pretty straightforward. Unless you don't know what 'tripping' means? (impossible...;))

  • Funny. First time I tripped, I talked to a rooster.

  • That was random Jim. Anyhow, when might we on the other side of the Atlantic get to see you? There are tonnes of cool festivals every summer, all over Europe!

  • Bit random that! Funny though.

  • mine was a turtel

  • Foot taping'ly good.

  • Wow ... that was awesome!

    Love it, thank you.

  • I only have ever favorited three things, and this is one of them.

  • Led Mandolin!

  • I play guitar, drums, mandolin, piano, and bass... best has got to be guitar... A friend of mine once asked me... "How in the world do you play a mandolin? It has got to have the smallest frets I've ever seen!!!" I looked at him and without thought, I said, "Well you can play the mandolin just like anything else you do, you just need practice to get better."

I would like to add that that a great remark i once heard was, "You are not good at something untill you have 10,000 hours of practice."

  • @Axlegos i prefer "if you're finger tips have feeling, you don't play enough"

  • fucking awesome more please!!

  • Amazing job, one of my favourite songs on the album, works great with the mandolin.

  • wow awesome man

  • nice very nice! you are the man jim thanks for the vids.
