I tried this again following the instructions you gave & it still won't work for me. I've selected white for the canvas. There must be something small that's missing. The canvas doesn't turn white. Is there another solution?
In order for the canvas to be white you must first have your canvas color filled as white.
To do this left click on the foreground color. This will bring up the color picker. Move the color picker all the way to white (left top side). The color you select will be the color of the forground color. The same applies when you select the background color and do the same to the background color selection.
thanks easy and useful

Thank you. A similar effect was achieved by using filters in the film days.
Now we can get the same effect in PS with more control.
I still use this effect with portrait, wedding and small product photography.

@mysticabutterfly
I'm using cs3 and I can't get either of these effects to work either. It must be something in the software.

I have photoshop CS2. I tried this misty effect, but it doesn't work. I can't get the white canvas. Does it work differently in CS2?
mysticabutterfly 3 years ago
It will work in Photoshop CS2,CS3 and even Photoshop elements.
To get the white canvas be sure white is selected as the color you wish to fill the canvas with.
Or, if using the delete method, be sure white is selected as the background color.
