The point is to get something in your body that will be digested and will help refuel your body quickly. A regular meal doesn't do that. You can eat whatever you want after the workout, but for gains you want something like whey that will break down and get into your system faster. If you're going to have a regular meal, you can eat that whenever as it won't help you with what's needed post-workout.
