@quaxk the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed nearly 100,000 people. If the bombs hadn't been dropped millions would have died on both sides. The US learned the capability of these weapons and agreed with the UN that nuclear weapons shouldn't be used. So in addition to halting a war a valuable lesson was learned about nuclear weapons. Please do some reading before you judge.

It should be mentioned that the last thing the US wants is the sudden collapse of the NK regime. That would entail an immensely expensive reunification with the South that would greatly threaten US investments in South Korean business. It is the basic reason why the US and South Korea have been doing all they can to prop up the regime while pretending to hope for its end for the last 2 decades.

That being said, I dont think that the DPRK can last more than 5 years without Kim jong-il.
