The hardest thing for me about clarinet is just knowing the names of the notes associated with the tone holes. Since it's built around 12 notes rather than 8, I don't know what notes go where, but that is easily remedied with the internets array of fingering charts.
@deardotzilla but even after the 2 1/2 octaves on a sax, you could just keep on voicing it up until you couldn't hear it anymore. Clarinet is harder to play due to the squeaks, but saxophone is way harder to be a professional / accomplished player.
Learning to play sax, and learning how to not sound like ass on saxophone are two different things. The fingering system is the only easy thing about sax. xD
@ShevardnadzeII yeah, for my jazz band a couple clarinet players had to cross over to sax. The biggest problem I saw in them was learning to have the neckstrap adjusted correctly. haha, other than that they're pretty good
yeah, is easier to make the sound of the clarinet than saxophone, but is so much harder to get a good sound in clarinet than the saxophone, is too easy to make ring the clarinet like a birthday horn, but is hard to make a sweet sound
very helpful tahnkyou! one quick question, I play the clarinet and have been for around 2 1/2 years (grade 2 coming up to grade 3) I am thinking of moving on to saxaphone. is it a good idea and how similar are they?
Sweet! I played Clarinet for about 7 months in 7th grade and then I switched to Saxophone which I've been playing for two years. Now I'm doubling, bur I'm getting a ronchy sound on the clarinet, this is helpful.
Im 13 and i play the clarinet only for about 2months for music class . The farest i got was high register line 6 and 7 and its soo easy but saxophone this boy plays in my class and he sounds awful is it because he dont have enough breath
Very informative! I have been playing clarinet regularly for four years and started learning to play the sax before my college schedule took over my life XD. I must say that the saxophone is much more open and relaxed. I have found playing the lower registers on the saxophone tricky since I always tend to tighten my lips. On the contrary, Friends of mine who tried clarinet have difficulty on the higher notes because of the tighter lip embouchure.
Switched from playing clarinet to sax. They're similar in a way, but clarinet is definitely harder. Compare 2 and a half octaves to 3 and a half octaves. Compare an a register key to an octave key. You need to tighten your embouchure more for playing clarinet, and for sax you open it, keep it low.
A first class video tutorial for a complete beginner like me. Well done ladies. I no nothing about music but you explanation and professionalism has gone along way in starting me off on the right track with these instruments. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
So, I play the clarinet for 5 years and the alto sax for 5 month... I´m nearly as good on the sax as on the clarinet, clarinet is a lot harder to play, but that´s why it´s cooler when you´re playing good. I like the clarinet more, but sax is easier
nah man...i play clarinet in a folk band with a sax player... we swapped and i had a go on sax its so open and rumbly and much easier than clarinet... the sax player couldnt get out of the bottom register. i dont mean to be pedantic but well...ya know iam.
oh yes definetly clarinet is way easier. Jazz tenor sax is so much more chill in the embouchure. so when I am tired on tight lipped etudes, I switch to my tenor and play some smooth jazz =)
i play sax and i find it quite easy and i play tenor , alto is easy but tenor and bari are harder with soprano being the hardest but i would like to play Bb or bass clarinet i around
My daughter is a sophmore in high school and is trying to make the switch from clarinet to sax, this tutorial helped her to correct her embouchure in about ten minutes. Thanks
Why would a sax player want to switch to a clarinet, the sax is amazing and i would never want to switch

The two greatest jazz instruments. The sax exudes sexiness, the clarinet, intelligence. I'm just glad I play both.

On the clarinet part... the pitch was too high on the mouth piece and barrel when the sax player played... her embouchure still wasn't right...

I've been playing Clarinet for 4-5 years & for some reason I find it harder on Saxophone .
But it is an amazingly easy transition. Except for embouchure throws you off. XD

When I play saxophone, it ALWAYS sounds like a dying cat/trumpet. But I sound normal on the clarinet.
