Don walker magic lyrics again...jimmy shared a cab with Ita in NY a couple of years ago..the very first time she had met any of the the band..LMFAO....THANKSNZOZ1980
I was a U.S. expat living in Australia from 1979-1982 and fell in love with Chisel. Unfortunately very few Americans have ever heard of Cold Chisel, which is a damn shame because I think these guys are a rockin band that deserve classic rock status. In the 80s when shitty disco has made it's way onto the music scene in the US, the Aussies were rockin'. Cold Chisel was an honest, straight-forward band with no hype or pretense. I still rock out to Chisel when I have friends over. Fantastic band!
i remember singing this song TO ITA....it was circa 1986, i was very p1ssed up, in the sidecar of a honda 4 with my mate Jimmy driving, hurtling down willaims street up the Cross, she was driving along in her BMW, We caught up, and we started to serinade her with this song. It seemed like the appropriate thing to do at the time........she wound up her window...which was in hindsight, the appropriate thing for her to do.... True Story... just ask Jimmy
Were there ever two sweeter snare flams than @3:18 - 20? Fuck I love flams. Fuck I love belling the ride cymbal and paradiddles too. I love Ian Moss with all the soul of a Mississippi blues man and all the finesse of sophisticated Jazz artist. And Jimmy? WTF can you say about JIMBO? The legend of Jimmy Barnes, will never live up to the person, live on stage just belting out a true rock ballad, without a moment of thought for anything but what truly comes from his heart. It's just indescribable.
"Were there ever two sweeter snare flams than @3:18 - 20?"
I just learned that Steve Prestwich, the drummer of Cold Chisel Died of a brain tumor 2 weeks ago (Jan 17, 2011), not long after I posted this. My thoughts are with his family, friends, the Aussie rock industry and everybody who was moved by his wonderful drumming style and the music he helped to make. Rest in peace Steve Prestwich, and thanks for making the world a better place.
@skepticoz . . . . yeah mate, tragic in every sense . . . . the tunes live on, he also wrote some of their most melodically memorable stuff . . vale Steve !!! As far as other great 'flams' . . . check out Blue Ruin's 'Bad Gin' . . . I think you'll get off !!! Cheers man, keep your head up !!! Peace.
@AngryGoblinFilms she was the editor in chiel of the Australian Womens Weekly. She spoke with a VERY pronbounced lisp and was the brunt of commedians attention for years. Jimmie decided to write about her..........
acdc could be american or british, they just dont have the sound /feeling that chisel invokes, unashamedly, meat pie and flanellete shirts, unpretentious australian. music about australia by australians...midnite oil,ac/dc their all trying to be something else...hail chisel...
How the fuck are AC/DC trying to be something else... You`re on Drugs !! If anything AC/DC are a benchmark for the likes of Chisel (that didnt make it i might add) & are looked up at by other artists (like Chisel). Jimmy Barnes is fucking Scottish not Australian just like the Young Brothers of AC/DC. Chisel couldnt cut it anywhere else where as AC/DC have smashed records all around the world selling over 200 million albums. How many have Chisel sold ?? Really none in comparison.
so angry...lol...chill..my point is acdc 'could' be british or american, the songs they write could be written by a lot of international metal bands, they're a metal band like a lot of other metal bands... no one is arguing acdc is by far bigger and more succesful internationally, but im not judging it by success overseas ....
but my personal opinion is that chisel is this countries premier band bcos they write songs that are quintessentially australian, this song ita, star hotel, flame trees and khe sahn, unpretentious, meat pie and schooners....so you acdc more ,than fine, your allowed...
@bongie555 Well if your judging Australia`s Premier Band by what they sing about you still have no idea because that would be Men at Work & Australian Crawl. Not to mention Icehouse & Goanna. All great Bands that sung Australian `themes or anthems` if you wish. Anyway Chisel are a great band but i think you`re just misguided or havent listened to much Australian rock in the past 20 years or so.
dude,i grew up in sydney following and befriending a lot of aussie independent bands. been in a band or 2 myself. some of my friends are in bands like the hard ons,the hummingbirds, celibate rifles, followed religiously bands like happyhate me nots and youami, the stems, died pretty smudge and the church, all aussies. i just didnt listen to the radio like you did,i was out here live....
Im with bongie on this one! And Im not even aussie.
I love chisel and AC/DC but their is no doubt when you talk to an aussie about their rock music they usually mention chisel before anyone else as their fave.
And god knows their are enough of you here in England.lol!
This is just a complete, perfect song. Lyrically and musically. Humour, politics. Australia.pop culture.Beat, melody, harmony. Every instrument. And a live performance too.
Just one of so many from Australia`s premier band. One of the best ever bands.
@hoppa1979 Cold Chisel are a great band. However, not too sure if they are Australia`s Premier band. If your judging `Premier` in strength of success you are forgetting Australia`s most successful Band AC/DC. On the world stage AC/DC are one of the biggest & best bands ever. No disrespect to Chisel.
ACDC is best based on success. Chisel for me is best because of their depth of talent. I would rate them just ahead of the Oils- who absolutely rocked the MCG at Sound Relief.
As well, for me, ACDC was never the same after Bon Scott. With Bon, they were right up there, though.
Id put Chisel well ahead of Midnight Oil. Oils are a nothing Band that sing about fucking Political garbage. Peter Garrett is a fuckwit. Australia had / have many great Rock acts like Rose Tattoo, Inxs, Choirboys, The Church etc etc list goes on.
When Bon died AC/DC knew he couldnt be replaced, they never replaced Bon with Brian. Brian was brought in because Bon was no longer there. Brian has done a fabulous job i like his style & i never compare him to Bon because you cant.
She advertised their album. I'm sure she looked down on them and laughed it off in a patronising manner. She might have thought them as being cute. You know - her being 100 years older than they were.
Ryan, you rock ..of course she was exactly 100yrs older! All those things she thed in WW! Keep it up.Been promoting your sites on my blip station~Thank God for you!
This was deleted from USA 'East' release as they would not know who Ita was....and replaced with a remixed Khe Sanh - there were three versions of Khe Sanh.
I don't hear sarcasm? They say "dose of integrity" "the only one we can depend upon", "the sweetest thing I've ever seen". I'd call it an affectionate tribute! You'd have to ask Don Walker I guess...
That does not mean I approve of prostitution. I don't disapprove it either, it's none of my business because I was not elected by anyone, but public figures have a responsibility apparently....
It just depends on who the celebrity mother is what the press think, the only reason she is not harassed is because she approves of Sally Anne Hucksteps murder/.
In her autobiography, Ita says she was delighted by the song and makes no reference to it being a "sarcastic" dedication whatsoever. Either she didn't know, or she did and didn't mind at all (which I'm sure she wouldn't have)!
She also mentions that her children think the song is the best thing that came out of growing up with a celebrity mother - couldn't agree more!
Ita is a classic, both the song and the woman. She was one of our few daytime celebrities that I really enjoyed watching on tv (and I even enjoyed her mag as well).
...I swear..theres nothing like a Chisel song to bring me back to Australia in the eighties....it tugs my heart....a beautiful period of my life....and great time for Australian music....
it was taking the piss, no crush, was taking the piss out of tabloid media, very relevant now look at that shit at 630 every nite now for fucks sake, and peopel still hang on it just like the boys were taking the piss out of stupid commoners then its still relevant now especially for goatee glad v8 fans and their equally braindead mrs!
To me it is a song about the times, give credit where it is due,[ie: crap lyrics]Ita was in our faces on tv in those yrs [editor womans day etc:] and she went on to head some big oz company`s also,to me they are paying her tribute, not puting her down as some would perhaps think.I love the music and lyrics.
2000tc88, VenomAuz... this song is pure sarcasm and tongue-in-cheek. It has nothing to do with paying tribute to, putting down, or having a crush on Ita Buttrose. Don Walker was taking a pot shot at the cult like following she had in those days, at the women who would virtually hang on every word she said and do shit just because "that's what Ita says" or "that's what Ita does".
How lucky was I to live in a time when we had the best home grown Aussi Pub band eva. Before all this American Bling Bling crap we have to put up with now. I saw Chisel as a pub band many times, at both the Circus Animals and Last Stand Concerts. Jimmy is even fabulous as a solo artist live. Was this filmed at the Vicar Of Wakefield Dural sometime in the 80's?
NZOZ1980, sorry to correct you, but I think when Don Walker wrote this poetry, he may thought the world of Ita, in fact, I'm sure of it. A fabulous song all the same!!
Why the hell isn't this on the Cold Chisel Vision DVD? I don't wanna hear any WEA bullshit about "..how the master tapes went missing in a vault and got unearthed decades later by an archiologist..." type crap either!! Dyso
lol, i know, they make up all kinds of excuses. I love their 'there just isn't a market for it' or 'if we include this video on the DVD, it might put people off buying it. It's the psychology of marketing'. Fuck, the Vision DVD is a half-baked look at their work. A real DVD would include their film of their 1973 pub performance in Adelaide.
Great clip + song. But for some reason I can't seem to download it using 'youtubex'. Can someone/original 'poster' help? Downloading seems forbidden, and all i get is a link to wikipedia (which is cool, but I wanna save the clip)??
To me, both Cold Chisel and Ita are Australian institutions.... when Cold Chisel reform, they sell out the Sydney Entertainment Centre and other large venues across Australia. Ita's status needs not to be explained.
Ita had givin cold chisel a bit of a slapping, calling them "uncouth" or sumthin. Cold Chisel came back with the best possible answer,East, and a song that absolutly took the piss outta her.
3 dislikes FUCK OFF

I think gollywog is wrong, but each to their own.

I think its healthy to have a boyhood crush on someone, even as famous as Ita.... Thats what the song is about.
VenomAuz 3 years ago
2000tc88, VenomAuz... this song is pure sarcasm and tongue-in-cheek. It has nothing to do with paying tribute to, putting down, or having a crush on Ita Buttrose. Don Walker was taking a pot shot at the cult like following she had in those days, at the women who would virtually hang on every word she said and do shit just because "that's what Ita says" or "that's what Ita does".

Every day and every night
She's the only one we can depend upon
I believe, I believe, in what she says
Yes I do
I believe, I believe, at the end of the day
Her magazine'll get me through
To every housewife through the land
There is no-one else they can depend upon
How could I not believe, when Ita tells me too

Ita's tongue never touches her lips
She could always be my godmother
And though the desk-top hides her hips
My imagination's strong
She's the sweetest thing I've ever seen
I'd like to take her out to dinner
But when I think about the places I've been
I'd probably hold my fork all wrong
mesber70 4 years ago
Every week, in every home
She got wholesome news for the family
I believe, I believe, in what she says
Yes I do
I believe, I believe, at the end of the day
Her magazine'll get me through

Every night when I get home
I settle down to prime time limbo
When all the boys are gathered around
Shouting Ita'a on TV
And though the roaches are thick on the ground
Somebody goes to close my window
Keep the noise of the city down
Get a dose of integrity

Yeah! go Ita!, "...probably hold my fork all wrong"..another great line I reckon...btw saw Mossy last week doing acoustic bloody great too!

The lyrics are hilarious, "though the desktop hides her hips, my i-ma-gi-na-tion's strong" I would love to have been around when this was released.

Why the hell isn't this on the Cold Chisel Vision DVD? I don't wanna hear any WEA bullshit about "..how the master tapes went missing in a vault and got unearthed decades later by an archiologist..." type crap either!! Dyso
thedys70 4 years ago
lol, i know, they make up all kinds of excuses. I love their 'there just isn't a market for it' or 'if we include this video on the DVD, it might put people off buying it. It's the psychology of marketing'. Fuck, the Vision DVD is a half-baked look at their work. A real DVD would include their film of their 1973 pub performance in Adelaide.

Funny thing....I love this, but send overseas to friends...They not understand who Ita Buttrose is...HAHAHAHA..nvm, I love it:-)

To me, both Cold Chisel and Ita are Australian institutions.... when Cold Chisel reform, they sell out the Sydney Entertainment Centre and other large venues across Australia. Ita's status needs not to be explained.

something tells me Ita loves that song

Ita had givin cold chisel a bit of a slapping, calling them "uncouth" or sumthin. Cold Chisel came back with the best possible answer,East, and a song that absolutly took the piss outta her.

I was wondering why they wrote a song about her... thanks
