hi can my ge x500 digital camera do that it has the settings like a DSLR but its a bridge camera what it means its cross between a point and shoot and DSLR camera thanks
hi, your iso is 400 at night? I thought higher ISO is supposed to be used at night? so why didn't you use a higher ISO? i'm still trying to get to grips with what ISO to use at differnet light levels. could you please explain why you used ISO 400 in pitch black and not higher? Thanks. =)
The low ISO means that there won't be much noise in the background. Sure, if you were trying to take a shot of something moving at night you would use a higher ISO,. To get a well exposed picture you need to get a balance, imagine you need 1 to get a well exposed picture. So, apature*shutter speed* ISO = 1, if you decrease ISO and increase shutter speed you will still get a well exposed picture. Basically, the longer shutter speed compensates for the low ISO. Hope that helps!
@TheLittleWorldofGaz Thanks for the reply. I understand the concept of icnreasing shutter speed to compensate for low ISO. How dark was the setting when you shot this since you had to use night vision on your video cam? was it close to pitch black as or was there enough sunlight to give you enough light for the picture? just tryna figure out when natural lighting becomes too dark that a night shot won't be possible. could you please exlpain "apature*shutter speed* ISO = 1"
a good place to start would be finding out how long you can stay open without getting star streaks which is (lens mm) devided by 400 if on crop sensor and 600 if on full frame.

@ARussell817 use a flashlight to light what you want in focus, set the focus and switch to manual focus so it stays as is. then of course turn your lamp off and take the shot

hi mate im starting photography right now ...and im getting really interested in it ....can u explain to me how do u do the ghost thing on your photos pls thnaks a lot i really appreciate if u reply back!!:) best regards gil
some times it works .....some times it does not !!! WTF !!!!! exposure can be calculated so where is the problem !.......i run iso 100 f stop depends on what i am shooting and effect i am wanting.....or did i miss something ?
@moomoomooism Yes, exposure can be calculate, but each exposure becomes a guessing game because of the absence of light. Most cameras these days can not calculate how much time is needed when very little to no light is seen with your own eyes. I think if you try doing some night photography, you will see what steven is trying to explain.
@m3g1 Go to M mode and turn your shutter speed dial until you get the BULB mode. You have to push the button down for the time you want the camera to take the picture. Then release it. (if you dont have a remote control which costs about 20$) Hope it works. Cheers
I love the ghosting technique I can't wait to try it. I bought a 2 foot wired shutter release with an additional 9 foot extension cord and it works great on my Nikon D 300. I am definitely gonna a try your ghosting technique. thanks a lot. Night time photography rocks.
How do you this on a film camera 35mm if you dont have a screen way to see what you just took...and how did you took the photo on the dock whith you on it, wich stop did you used for that depth of field?...
@roughneckinit This is not my tutorial but when I shoot in the dark I take along very powerful spot light that I bought at Walmart for about $30.00. I use this to light up the subject and focus. I then switch to manual focus to hold the focus and shoot the subject. Give it a try and good luck!
@550ghost Well I appreciate the timely response! I have a few headlamps I hike with so mayeb they will do the trick! I will have to give it a try! Thanks again!
@CLundkvist Uh, ok, Sherlock. You might wanna check out a thing called "joke". It's pretty common and helps people with tight sphincters to relax. ;) Thanks for bringing me back to this video though, I've been messing with long exposures and feel inspired to go out again and shoot in nighttime.

Good info Stephen the big advantage for me is when I used to do long exposures on my old Mamiya RB67 roll film camera many shots where not keepers so it wasted film at least with digital it uses nothing but my time. This is probably a really dumb question, but I'm new. Are there any other specific settings on the camera that I have to make sure are right for these pictures to turn out right? Like yours?
I use to take pics like this all the time with my old Pentax K1000, but I have a Sony f828 now and can't figure out yet how to leave the lens open. Is it possible with this camera. I really miss doing long exposure. As you can tell, I'm very new to digital.
@Hasmat6981 Hey I will answer that for you: because the picture is taking over such a long period of time and the atmosphere is dark, the camera wont pick up a humans movement because humans don't reflect light and as they are moving around whilst the picture is taking, the best you could possibly see someone in a long exposure picture is if they were lit up and stationery.
@Hasmat6981: Because of the long exposure, the light you are emitting while walking through the picture can't be seen. Imaging that the camera collects the light "slowly", so you have to stand a while in front of the camera to be seen in the final picture (or use a flashlight, so a huge amount of light hits the sensor). Difficult to explain, but if you are moving fast, you won't be visible in the final picture ;) Best is to try by yourself
@03DodgeDiesel just keep in mind that he uses 400 ISO because of the curfew so can shoot it a little faster but it is better to shoot at 100 iso to avoid digital noise
you can add yourself onto the picture really easily and alot more customizably (i just made a word lol) in photoshop... just with layers and opacity... but i can see doing it all in the camera being fun..
Don't you get sensor issues beyond 2 minute exposures i.e. heating, noise, drift ect...? I expected film would be a better choice. I like the double exposure look. Keep it up.

@PheonixFire777 remember he is standing in complete darkness. his video camera is in night mode. most camcorders shoot inferred or green in night mode.
@PheonixFire777 I'm guessing it must be due to night vision. Most of the camcorders have that feature and it adds a greenish tint to the videos. Great video nonetheless.
over one minute!!!! my nickon d200 only gose to 30 secs is there any way i can exstend that stephen? and do you need a clear moon lit night?..if so being from the UK im shit out of luck there hehe. fantastic photos really like the digger.
Unfortunately, the town where I live, if I go out with my camera at night to try to do some long exposure photos, I'll probably get beaten, robbed, shoted and eventually raped. My camera would be sold by any ridiculous amount in return for some crack and luckily I would survive without major sequelae.

Unfortunately, the town where I live, if I go out with my camera at night to try to do some long exposure photos, I'll probably get beaten, robbed, shoted and eventually raped. My camera would be sold by any ridiculous amount in return for some crack and luckily I would survive without major sequelae.
Anyway nice tutorial...
