  • hi can my ge x500 digital camera do that it has the settings like a DSLR but its a bridge camera what it means its cross between a point and shoot and DSLR camera thanks

  • Amazin

  • hi, your iso is 400 at night? I thought higher ISO is supposed to be used at night? so why didn't you use a higher ISO? i'm still trying to get to grips with what ISO to use at differnet light levels. could you please explain why you used ISO 400 in pitch black and not higher? Thanks. =)

  • The low ISO means that there won't be much noise in the background. Sure, if you were trying to take a shot of something moving at night you would use a higher ISO,. To get a well exposed picture you need to get a balance, imagine you need 1 to get a well exposed picture. So, apature*shutter speed* ISO = 1, if you decrease ISO and increase shutter speed you will still get a well exposed picture. Basically, the longer shutter speed compensates for the low ISO. Hope that helps!

  • a good place to start would be finding out how long you can stay open without getting star streaks which is (lens mm) devided by 400 if on crop sensor and 600 if on full frame.

  • not to take from your tutorial but seriously ..... 'i was told ii'm only allowed be here till 10'. Talk about bowing down to the cops. You're a free man on the land, wake up. infowars dot com!

  • hi mate. i done some night stuff. but there been enought light to get a ttl meter reading. how do you get a light meter reading in -0 light. and do you stock up on filters. cheers

  • whats the device called what your using for the camera's shutter speed? i have the nikon d70 ( very old ) will it still work?

  • Fuck the Police.

  • also i dont get it..whats the benefits from shooting in complete darkness compared to waiting for the sun to rise to get some light?..do you get more details with longer shutterspeeds and pitch black or whats better?

  • so how do you set the Focus with no light?

  • How do you focus the camera in the darkness.....?

  • @ARussell817 use a flashlight to light what you want in focus, set the focus and switch to manual focus so it stays as is. then of course turn your lamp off and take the shot

  • @h0b0ch1c shut up..while u sit at home praying u get likes on ur comment atleast this kid made a video thats helping atleast someone

  • THANK YOU!

  • I just don't understand people who criticize others who offer their free time to edit and put together a very informative video. Well done Stephen on a good job. Great photos!

  • Excellent video! Gives me ideas and inspiration to go out and try similar projects. Keep up the good work. Thank you very much!

  • its green.

  • Love the photos

    Holy "um"s

  • hi mate im starting photography right now ...and im getting really interested in it ....can u explain to me how do u do the ghost thing on your photos pls thnaks a lot i really appreciate if u reply back!!:) best regards gil

  • Great job!!!!

  • i dont get why people are complaining about his "um" and "uh" stfu and watch the damn video.

  • i can't watching that fucking video

    every 2 seconds "ummm" "uhhh"

  • Comment removed

  • nice job but saying "um" all the time is really irritating.

  • some times it works .....some times it does not !!! WTF !!!!! exposure can be calculated so where is the problem !.......i run iso 100 f stop depends on what i am shooting and effect i am wanting.....or did i miss something ?

  • @moomoomooism Yes, exposure can be calculate, but each exposure becomes a guessing game because of the absence of light. Most cameras these days can not calculate how much time is needed when very little to no light is seen with your own eyes. I think if you try doing some night photography, you will see what steven is trying to explain.

  • it was green instead of black. am i the only one who saw that?

  • Great tips!

  • i should go try this tonight

  • use picwizz.com to share your pics, it has no size limit

  • where can I get one of those shutters?

I need about 600s of exposure, is it capable of doing that one?

(Fijifilm HS20 or Lumix GF2, DSLR is broken :S)

  • nice video, but why are you green ?

  • Im going on a night shoot tomorrow.....didn't really know where to start, but this helped alot!!! (I work mostly in the studio)THNX

  • this is guy has some interesting points...too bad he cant speak to save his life...uh um uh um uh uh uh uh uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh uh uh ummmmm uh

  • Hey Stephen.

I have a question for you.

Do you know what is the maximum shutter speed in bulb mode before it damages your reflex camera? I have a EOS 550D

    Thanks man

  • @lordpolak you can´t damage your camera that way.

  • @TheNothingcity OK Thanks

  • Thanks Stephen for sharing this. Cheers!

  • How long do you have to stay in front of the camera in order to get the effect

  • do u have to have a remote do have the shutter speed up to 2-3 mins? i have a nikon d5100 and i dont think i can do more than 30-40sek..

  • @m3g1 Go to M mode and turn your shutter speed dial until you get the BULB mode. You have to push the button down for the time you want the camera to take the picture. Then release it. (if you dont have a remote control which costs about 20$) Hope it works. Cheers

  • @SkyEurope1988 aha.. so thats what BULB means... thanks for the info! =) gonna order a remote shutter release.. thanks ! =)

  • @m3g1 your welcome:)

  • Thanks

  • Awesome wow

  • If your your poor like me you can just use the timer so the camera doesn't move, wish I had enough coin for an SLR

  • @MrRconway

The bulb setting allows you to keep the shutter open as long as you like.

  • I love the ghosting technique I can't wait to try it. I bought a 2 foot wired shutter release with an additional 9 foot extension cord and it works great on my Nikon D 300. I am definitely gonna a try your ghosting technique. thanks a lot. Night time photography rocks.

  • hi i just bought a shutter release for my d3100 although my cameragoes up to 30 seconds ur saying using the release you can do this longer? tx

  • Excellent! Love it. Well done and informative.

  • @Hyperfocus2011 dude the more iso the less time..... learn your stuff

  • Great tutorial! Thanks.

  • ur awesome.

  • you put iso to 400 case youhave to get out of there fast??? 400 is more sensitive than 100??? what the?

  • Thanks for the tips. I definitely have to try this. Peace!!!

  • Only allowed to be there until 10 ? Is there some kind of curfew thing going on in the US ?

    Great results and advice btw.

  • How do you this on a film camera 35mm if you dont have a screen way to see what you just took...and how did you took the photo on the dock whith you on it, wich stop did you used for that depth of field?...

  • Green man

  • how do you focus in the dark ?

  • Thank you!!!

  • "Even after I flash myself and walk away"

  • i bought a cannon rebel cant wait to start taking some awesome pics

  • totally make it look so easy

  • Nice tutorial and photos

  • How do you focus on what you want in the dark?

  • @roughneckinit

Pre-focus the lens to its hyperfocal distance.

  • @roughneckinit This is not my tutorial but when I shoot in the dark I take along very powerful spot light that I bought at Walmart for about $30.00. I use this to light up the subject and focus. I then switch to manual focus to hold the focus and shoot the subject. Give it a try and good luck!

  • @550ghost Well I appreciate the timely response! I have a few headlamps I hike with so mayeb they will do the trick! I will have to give it a try! Thanks again!

  • Very cool

  • i bet he's just in his bedroom filming this while the "cop" (mom) waits for him to go to bed

  • @h0b0ch1c

you can actually hear and see cars running past him, so you are an unfunny moron

  • @CLundkvist Uh, ok, Sherlock. You might wanna check out a thing called "joke". It's pretty common and helps people with tight sphincters to relax. ;) Thanks for bringing me back to this video though, I've been messing with long exposures and feel inspired to go out again and shoot in nighttime.

    Great video, the365daysproject!

  • @h0b0ch1c KMAO

  • @h0b0ch1c becareful someone rape you !!! but enjoyed :)

  • jesus dude, you say the word 'um 'or 'uh' at least 56000 times

  • @shakeNbakestudios actually only 54,700 times.. u were close :D

  • @shakeNbakestudios Just click on the 'time' thingy and he will say um there. What sorcery is this?

  • @shakeNbakestudios Toastmasters is the cure for that.

  • you weirdo

  • Thanks, this was very interesting.

    :)

  • why are you whispering?

  • I under stand long exposure photography but I dont know how u shot the one with U standing on the dock where u wheren't see through, how in the world did u do that?

  • @Jonnytaco28 wireless remote shutter + he stood there for the whole time of holding the shutter

  • Comment removed

  • wow,you missed the UFO at ...042!

  • check out my pics on my facebook page

    Randymiller1976

  • You get told to leave a location? Where do you live? North Korea? :-p

    Great tutorial.

  • If lens have focus scale u can calculate the hiperfocal dept of field.

like 50mm on a FX camera u can set 7meters at F16 and u get 2meters to infinity focus.

  • what a focus techniques you use? I ve tried to light object with my hand lamp to focus but it was difficult.. I also had to light up a subject by hand lamp during exposition to get it in photo... HOW hell you get so clean and bright bulldozer ?? I cant believe there were enought natural light...

  • and uuuhm and uhm uhm uhm and uhm. fucking hell do u have any other words in your vocabulary?

  • Awesome!!! Thank you so much for sharing the settings!!! Gonna try it out this weekend !!! :D

  • Good info Stephen the big advantage for me is when I used to do long exposures on my old Mamiya RB67 roll film camera many shots where not keepers so it wasted film at least with digital it uses nothing but my time. Have you found grain much of a problem? my first digital (an Olympus) didnt like long exposures & produced lots of grain my current D7000 works well at even very long exposures I wonder what your thoughts are & if some cameras lean better to long exposure use

  • why use the infinity setting to focus instead of the hyperfocal distance?

  • wow... this green color make me want to throw out...!

  • Nice. Thanks for the creative ideas.

  • Photosion on Facebook. a page for sharing amateur and professional pictures made by yourself ... or just observe others pictures. if you want to share ur work, or just enjoy the pictures posted, go there and give a "Like".

  • This is probably a really dumb question, but I'm new. Are there any other specific settings on the camera that I have to make sure are right for these pictures to turn out right? Like yours?

  • um uh ummm uhhh ummm uhh ummmm

  • I use to take pics like this all the time with my old Pentax K1000, but I have a Sony f828 now and can't figure out yet how to leave the lens open. Is it possible with this camera. I really miss doing long exposure. As you can tell, I'm very new to digital.

  • I just bought an SLR for this reason. Great video.

  • Dude i love the photo with the truck. Well Done!!

Question: How did u made long exposure with urself without seeying urself moving in the photo?

  • @Hasmat6981 Hey I will answer that for you: because the picture is taking over such a long period of time and the atmosphere is dark, the camera wont pick up a humans movement because humans don't reflect light and as they are moving around whilst the picture is taking, the best you could possibly see someone in a long exposure picture is if they were lit up and stationery.

  • @Hasmat6981: Because of the long exposure, the light you are emitting while walking through the picture can't be seen. Imaging that the camera collects the light "slowly", so you have to stand a while in front of the camera to be seen in the final picture (or use a flashlight, so a huge amount of light hits the sensor). Difficult to explain, but if you are moving fast, you won't be visible in the final picture ;) Best is to try by yourself

  • Hey man thats cool

  • Awesome technique!!! :)

  • I must admit, you are amazing. <3

  • Way cool I am inspired thank you MM

  • I USED NIGHT VISION GLASSES TO SEE THIS VIDEO

  • watching and learning from you. I am about to buy a Canon 7D.

  • how exactly did you get the last picture to do that? with the flash thing like the picture before?

  • Where are u dude!.........Update?

  • ok um, um, ok um, ummm, ok umm, and umm, ok um, ummm, ok umm, ummm

  • @piinkpandahh69 i was about to comment the same thing, 'till i saw your comment! LMAO!!

  • @piinkpandahh69 Now I can't focus on what he's saying lol.

  • @piinkpandahh69 Have *you* offered up any videos to Youtube ? Have you tried to make any videos with commentary ? Let's have a look ....ah, no.

  • Comment removed

  • that CAT truck would look badass if you light painted some of the foreground

  • Take some long exposures of some FEMA Camps... the public need to know!

  • Umm, cool video. ;-)

  • Amazing how many times u said ( umm ) :P

    Great video though ;)

  • Cool, Thanks for the info. I LOVE to shoot lightning with a 10-13 second exposure f~11 Iso 400... Just keep shooting

  • @03DodgeDiesel just keep in mind that he uses 400 ISO because of the curfew so can shoot it a little faster but it is better to shoot at 100 iso to avoid digital noise

  • Man Really cool, and very clean explanation...thanks for sharing this tip

  • Umm, so umm, and ummm, ummm oh ummm...

  • Awesome stuff mate, takes photography to new fun and rewarding levels, thanks for uploading Stephen

  • copy and paste these words to watch some nice long exposure pics: Light Fun Shooting *With My Lady*

  • you can add yourself onto the picture really easily and alot more customizably (i just made a word lol) in photoshop... just with layers and opacity... but i can see doing it all in the camera being fun..

  • Your video is very helpful for people who are just starting to love photography. gf

  • Your video is very helpful for people who are just starting to love photography.

  • Nice...

  • Nice.

  • what camera?

  • Do you use any filter on this?

  • Don't you get sensor issues beyond 2 minute exposures i.e. heating, noise, drift ect...? I expected film would be a better choice. I like the double exposure look. Keep it up.

  • Do you use any filters while doing your night photography?

  • COOL!

  • My camera only takes up to 30 seconds... is there any way i can make this longer?

  • @hazzaa me too. =| what is your camera by the way?

  • @ChannelLAG I know now.... keep changing your shutter speed until it gets to the BULB bit.... and then you can hold it down for however long... or am i wrong?

  • @hazzaa the bulb setting lets you take for long exposure for however long you want or until the battery runs out.

  • @hazzaa

what camera do you use? If you have a shutter speed called "b" it's the bulb function that means that as long as you hold down the shutter button, the camera will collect light. That's why he says its good to use an external shutter release.

  • Whats infinity mark? thx

  • this is an awesome tutorial. I love it

  • if you strobed yourself with an off camera flash (say from the ground up) at the end of the exposure would you turn out more opaque?

  • why is it green?

  • @PheonixFire777 infrared

  • @PheonixFire777 nightvision?

  • @PheonixFire777 night vision! =)

  • @PheonixFire777 remember he is standing in complete darkness. his video camera is in night mode. most camcorders shoot inferred or green in night mode.

  • @PheonixFire777 I'm guessing it must be due to night vision. Most of the camcorders have that feature and it adds a greenish tint to the videos. Great video nonetheless.

  • @PheonixFire777 night mode you idiot ! ''Night vision''

  • Great tutorial, really fast, clear and very useful, thank you very much Stephen.

    .

  • I like your ghost shadows! Good work!

  • That was a very interesting video Stephen its very educative. Do carry on the good work, Good Luck !

  • Thanks you Stephen.. very interesting .. ! I like it .. !

  • @Honusnap thanks you?

  • This is a nice tip but how do you deal with hot pixels that comes whenever you are doing long exposures?

  • lol i saw everything dark and i was about to change video

  • Hey man do you use ND filters or anything for night time photography ???? or just the lens itself ??? :P nice vid LOVE IT. subscribing :)

  • over one minute!!!! my nickon d200 only gose to 30 secs is there any way i can exstend that stephen? and do you need a clear moon lit night?..if so being from the UK im shit out of luck there hehe. fantastic photos really like the digger.

  • @beerequalsheaven The bulb mode man.

  • can it damage to the Sensor if its left too long?

  • cool man...
