dude. great vid. thanks for sharing. i have been so sick of going through razors over the years(1 per shave.yes my hair is that coarse). hundreds of pounds worth of plastic that must be out there from me alone. due to our "everything disposable" mentality. my uncle is a barber of 40yrs. i asked him about straight razor. he told me i didnt wanna mess with it. but really i do. besides.. some chicks dig scars ! oh an btw.. thanks for the comedic ending to the 2nd vid with the "weapon" .. lolz
Good video. I understand that you're not gay, but I think you should at least try being bi. You would do well. If you need someone to teach you, totally hit me up. I will jump on that grenade sir.
Thanks alot for this. I got a set-up for Christmas, also with the idea that it's nice to have a reusable shaver (goin' 'green' and all that). When a Barber does it ya' just can't see what he's up to. Given the potential for self-mutilation, I REALLY appreciate the time you took to put this together-Thanks again Bro!
@FineBowl The strop smooths the blade-edge after each shave. If you didn't strop your razor, the edge just gets rougher and rougher and rougher until you're basically shaving your face with a cheese-grater. Not a comfortable feeling. Stropping maintains the edge and gives you a comfortable shave until the blade itself is just too dull to shave anymore and must be resharpened.
hey, people that dont want to pay a shitload to get into strait shaving, i got into it for a little over 20 bucks, and all of the stuff works great, though i do intend to upgrade, you can get into it for a lot less than 100 bucks
@NoNsToPuH The nicer blade you get the less a water stone becomes necessary. My blade and strap was $400 and taken care of properly it won't need be to sharpened for 40 years.
@wazaman0021 No, that would wear out the blade way too much. You should sharpen at most once a month although once a year is probably a better number. This is what the strop is for, it "touches up" the blade while only removing a little (if any) material. Once you get used to it you can tell when the blade needs sharpening based on the feel of the shave and stropping.
@Takkun5656 well if ur really not joking, then i shall answer... mind i have two straight razors, one for my face... the other for down there (dont want my balls on my face:L) but honestly its really good, easy to keep it tidy, just take ur time cause if u slip (and i have already) it fuckin hurts :L
Odd tip something that helps keep that edge between uses is to put a little gun oil on the sharpened edge it'll keep the blade from wearing down faster between uses, and you won't have to sharpen as much. Some people don't like it, but it hasn't failed me yet.
did you just decide one day to purchase a straight razor and teach yourself or did someone teach you? i'm looking in to buying one, but i have never used a straight before so i'm wondering if it would be a waste of money.
@07foxmulder I pretty much just bought a straight razor and went at it. I really didn't do a whole lot of research (a mistake) so I made a lot of errors in the beginning, including a few times where after the shave my face HURT like crazy and I had more than a few cuts haha. I have actually learned a lot about shaving since this video, and I currently shave with a double edged safety razor. It's not as challenging or as fun, but its nice not having to sharpen or strop the blade. check em out.
Mmm, people from a local barbershop told me the knife gets warm from the canvas side. They also told me the knife only has to be stropped before you shave...
Hey, like the video. I am actually in the process of learning, and i was planning on teaching this as well. Is there anyway you might be able to give a few links where you found all of this information?
Sharpening a blade doesn't take long. And you only do it about once a month, once every two months. Once you get really good at it, you can sharpen a blade real good in under a minute.

@shaykai Oh, yeah. Now I've watched some of your other stuff, you're deffo not gay(!) I started with using a Feather "Artist Club RG" razor. They have disposable blades, so you get the awesomeness of SE shaving without the trouble of stropping and sharpening.
Also, try the pro guard blades that are great for beginners because they have a wire mesh around the blade that keep you from cutting yourself badly. My first shave only got me a couple of small nicks that I sometimes even got from my mach 3.
there is something so classy and cool about shaving with a straight razor. Its economical, but the bottom line is you shave with it because you think its interesting.
Do you recomend a kit or buy everything separately. The kits i saw on the website in the description had a razor, strop, razor stand, a brush and a mug for the soap. No waterstone though. Thanks
Ive been really interested in doing this but my hair is kinda thick and growns weird on my neck. My question is on the second pass. I alwasy to a second pass with a saftey razor but I go in the opposite direction . Is that possible with the straight razor. Can you go in the opposite direction or will u mess your face up lol
@domenicocusumano Yes you can, in fact many people recommend three passes for a shave that is still perfect into the night. (maybe only a couple of invisible stubbles) One with, the second across, and the third against the grain. The three passes are also exfoliating and help keep your complexion.
you dont have to take a shower, use a hot towel!! let it kick it on your face for about a minute, do that two or three times and your face should be ready to shave.
290$ are you joking??? you got ripped off...you can go get the razor for 5$ and a pack of 10 blades for 3$ that are already extremely sharp..\..you dont have to buy special soap...the gay make up brushes or a stone. and a leather strop is the same thing as a belt. common sense USED to go along way...
@dukepharoah Since when is springing for quality GAY? I'm betting you do not use a SE razor. The difference between a razor using disposable blades and a real SE, aside from the fact still having to buy blades is pointless, is HUGE. As for the "290$ are you joking??", SE razors can run up to $800. If you're not using shaving soap, THEN a brush isn't necessary. With a real SE, if you want it to be sharp, a stone is obviously necessary. You definitely get what you pay for.
@dukepharoah you realize that $290 buys you almost a lifetime supply of shaving equipment, right? And your great-grandfather used the "gay make up brushes" to shave and probably would have used the razor on you if you called them gay or make-up brushes. As for the strop, most leather belts are made of "fair" quality leather at best. Most strops are made of "fine" or "Super fine" quality leather. A "fine" or "super fine" belt is $60+.
Straight razors are one of the lost arts of manhood.
@TheFiremonkeyman I taught myself to shave with a straight razor very successfully. $290 is MORE than enough to set you up for life. The only thing you replace is the shaving-soap (and maybe the brush every few decades). Everything else lasts forever so long as you don't abuse it in the course of shaving. I love straight-razor shaving and it is indeed a lost art that men used to pride themselves with.
@Shangas Pussy? I shave my balls and I wouldn't want that anywhere near my manhood. It would be be embarrassing to go to the hospital with half your sack in some ice because you screwed up with a straight blade.
@rocksmosh I put the soap in the container and then I put the container in a pot of hot (almost boiling) water. After 2-3 minutes the soap inside had taken the shape of the container. I then took it out and let it cool.
Thanks for showing us how to do everything right. I finally switched over a couple weeks ago. So far I like it a lot. A couple nicks, and mustache and chin areas are still tricky, but I'm getting better.
The "new technology" of multi blade razorsactually pulls your hair up and then cuts it. This can cause ingrown hairs. Straight razors just shave the hair off. The new technology" razors are designed to be thrown away, so that you will keep buying more fore the rest of your life!
@kostiasXxX A mach3 razor is designed to hold 3 blades at a specific angle necessary for shaving. A straight razor is just 1 blade, and there is nothing to hold it at a specific angle, this is why new users often cut themselves.
@shaykai Yes I know that. I mean why do people (like you e.g) prefer the straight razor, when there are new shaving technologies (with 3 blades as you said). I just want to say that with the 3 blades, you shave faster and as I can see, its more safer than the straight one. What are the advantages that a straight has, and i 3blade doesnt have.
@kostiasXxX I think it's mainly just the 'cool' factor. The same reason why some people drive classic cars when a Honda Civic is perfectly capable of getting you from point A to point B. I don't think I get a better shave with a straight razor than I would get with a mach 3, and with a straight razor I'm definitely slower. BUT I have to admit that shaving is a lot more fun and challenging with a straight razor. It's also quite a bit 'cooler'.
@kostiasXxX Nope. I think that you may get less irritation and burns for the sole reason that you prepare your face a lot more when shaving with a straight razor (usually hot towel or steamy shower, quality shaving soap and brush, maybe even a preshave oil, let it soak in). People that are concerned more with time will generally skip all of these steps and grab a mach 3. You can get just as good a shave out of a mach 3 if you take the time to prep your face like you would with a straight razor.
@kostiasXxX you also get a closer shave from a straight razor, and it's easier to get a straight and sharp design with a straight razor. For example chin straps.
@kostiasXxX I just switched recently and for me the 3-5 blade razors are much much slower. I usually only shave once a week and let in grow a bit. When it grows a little the regular razors get clogged with hair quick and it feels like every 1/4" of skin I'm having to rinse it to get all the hairs out so it will shave again. Even then it's doing a patch job where I have to go back over it several times. The straight razor is covering a lot more surface with less effort.
Multi-blade cartridges are designed so the first blade literally pulls the hair out of the skin a bit, and subsequent blades cut it. That's true for razors with 2+ blades. That's why you get the tugging sensation even with new cartridges. This results in ingrown hairs and burn, even with well-prepped skin. Single blade razors are just crazy-sharp and cut the hair very smoothly. This leaves very little, to no irritation and a much more pleasant experience.
How do you when to switch from 4000 to 8000 grit. Also, when you shave a 3 day beard should there be any pull at all with a honed shave ready blade or should it go right through like you have nothing at all?
Awesome...I've been using a straight razor for a few years, but I only had ONE razor that was an antique in an unopened box and in perfect condition...IT was great, but I lost it on a road trip and haven't found a good comparable one. I'm not concerned with price as much as quality. I've seen them for up to 250, but it seemed to be more about design. In the meantime you should check out Orange Fuzz on Etsy. They have awesome shaving soaps that smell great and are made from different beers
Sweet video. Thanks for posting. (Never thought I'd spend 20 minutes watching another dude shaving on the Internet, but there's a first for everything!)
Hey man, thanks for the videos, they were a big help.
I'm loving my straight razor shaves, but I keep having to "clean up" a couple hard spots (curvey bits of my neck and jaw) with a safety razor after... Any tips for that? How about a video focusing on the hard to get spots?
Thank you for this. I have wanted a straight razor for along time since I to am getting tired or all those stupid razors. I think my wife might be getting me one for Christmas.
@b0ssh0gg Thank you! I've looked up how the Moroccans shave and they do advocate having a 'loose' skin instead of stretching it tight. I'm going to try this technique (as well as a few others they have!) next time I shave. Thank you b0ss
in canada.. at the mall.. cheap razor with replaceable blades: 15, +12 for 10 (or 20 if you break em in half) razors.. badger brush with stand $55, shaving soap $12, the strap was $75 but i didnt buy it... nice permanent razor was $185 and DEFINITELY did not buy it... silver stand for razor, brush, and soap bowl: $250. this stuff is not cheap folks but can stay with you til you have a son who needs to shave. good luck, going to do my first shave now!
Straights should be sharpened about once a month/once every two months (or whenever you fuck up the edge) and should be stropped before and after each use.
Question... I just got a straight razor and was wondering if you have to use shaving cream... I only use warm water with normal razors, can I do this with the straight razor?
@AquaThane Yes you can, usually for the second pass I just use warm water now. If you do use shaving soap it might help you get less irritation when you are starting out.
Really great video - not pretentious, very accessible style. My first straight razor arrives later this week - progressing from disposable to safety to straight now.
Great tutorial. I've been curious about using a straight razor for awhile because I wanted to tap back into one of the fading roots of being a man, and this gives me an idea of what that's all about. Girlfriend's been bugging me about gift ideas for the holidays and a straight razor sounds perfect. If I don't slice my throat open and bleed out maybe this will pass down through the family tree :P
Even though i don't own a straight razor, because im 16, i shave slowly. I enjoy my shaving time, sometimes it might take me half an hour to shave. People ask me why, i simply say, shaving is a lost art that takes time to perfect.
@rocketman468 Depending on how well the sharpening is done, every few months at most. Say 2-4 times a year. Sharpening a straight razor is something you can fairly easily learn yourself. I did. It's not that hard.
This was a huge help - thanks so much for making it. I actually managed to not to cut myself too badly on the first try (with a 50-ish year old razor, too).
@MaximusZTS Looked after PROPERLY, a straight razor will last for centuries. I've seen videos and read stories (and seen actual razors) that are over 100 years old (and older) which still shave perfectly.
@MaximusZTS If properly cared for, forever. A cousin of mine has a straight razor that's been handed down since the late 1600's, when his ancestor was a posh barber in london england.
Its a styptic pen, its made of Aluminum Sulfate. (alum blocks are the same thing) yeah it "puckers" the skin and helps clot the blood closing the cut...Thanks for the vid!
I took up straight-shaving nearly a month ago. I bought a 2nd-hand razor for $35 & honed it myself on a 2-side honing-stone & stropping on an old belt (leather). The results are AMAZING!! Forget your plastic six-blade pussy-vibrator gilette pieces of crap. This is the REAL way to shave. Perfect every time & as Shay says, hell of a lot cooler. Plus, you save money.
@tireironman In general if you use something like shaving cream or shaving foam it tends to leave a sort of slimey film on the razor that is hard to get off. Shaving soap washes clean off.
@shaykai Is there a way I can practice straight edge shaving without cutting my skin? I know I would cut myself pretty badly if I start on my skin right away .
@2k10Ricky Yes you can. I actually almost always use a disposable straight razor now called the Parker 2. I picked it up for 20 bucks and got like hundreds of blades for a few dollars more. All the pleasure of shaving with a straight razor with none of the sharpening!
Is "Shaving soap" required? Cause I tried with regular soap (Just got my first straight razor today) and it took a tiny amount off but I cant get the rest. I didnt have a lot to shave today, but I figured it would still work. The blade is plenty sharp.
@plomari69 Yes you do polish off whatever is on the spine (my spine was painted black, and that has slowly worn down to silver). I just don't give a fuck ;) In all seriousness I believe that items that get used and acquire marks from that use develop a certain character. Like a tea pot you use over and over again, it almost becomes a member of a family. I know lots of people are obsessed with everything looking brand new, but I'm sort of the opposite way.
dude. great vid. thanks for sharing. i have been so sick of going through razors over the years(1 per shave.yes my hair is that coarse). hundreds of pounds worth of plastic that must be out there from me alone. due to our "everything disposable" mentality. my uncle is a barber of 40yrs. i asked him about straight razor. he told me i didnt wanna mess with it. but really i do. besides.. some chicks dig scars ! oh an btw.. thanks for the comedic ending to the 2nd vid with the "weapon" .. lolz

FineBowl 1 month ago
@FineBowl The strop smooths the blade-edge after each shave. If you didn't strop your razor, the edge just gets rougher and rougher and rougher until you're basically shaving your face with a cheese-grater. Not a comfortable feeling. Stropping maintains the edge and gives you a comfortable shave until the blade itself is just too dull to shave anymore and must be resharpened.

I love straight-razor shaving and it is indeed a lost art that men used to pride themselves with.

Hey shay. How did you melt the shaving soap in the mug like that?
rocksmosh 10 months ago
@rocksmosh I put the soap in the container and then I put the container in a pot of hot (almost boiling) water. After 2-3 minutes the soap inside had taken the shape of the container. I then took it out and let it cool.

The "new technology" of multi blade razorsactually pulls your hair up and then cuts it. This can cause ingrown hairs. Straight razors just shave the hair off. The new technology" razors are designed to be thrown away, so that you will keep buying more fore the rest of your life!
abitoffcenter 10 months ago
Hey guys, can anybody answer me, what is the difference between a straight razor and the 3 blade razors (e.g Gillete) thanks. I am just very curious!
kostiasXxX 11 months ago
@kostiasXxX A mach3 razor is designed to hold 3 blades at a specific angle necessary for shaving. A straight razor is just 1 blade, and there is nothing to hold it at a specific angle, this is why new users often cut themselves.
shaykai 11 months ago
@shaykai Yes I know that. I mean why do people (like you e.g) prefer the straight razor, when there are new shaving technologies (with 3 blades as you said). I just want to say that with the 3 blades, you shave faster and as I can see, its more safer than the straight one. What are the advantages that a straight has, and i 3blade doesnt have.
kostiasXxX 11 months ago
@kostiasXxX I think it's mainly just the 'cool' factor. The same reason why some people drive classic cars when a Honda Civic is perfectly capable of getting you from point A to point B. I don't think I get a better shave with a straight razor than I would get with a mach 3, and with a straight razor I'm definitely slower. BUT I have to admit that shaving is a lot more fun and challenging with a straight razor. It's also quite a bit 'cooler'.
shaykai 11 months ago
@shaykai So, it doesnt have to do with irritation or burns? Maybe with the straight one you get less irritation nd burns?
kostiasXxX 11 months ago
@kostiasXxX Nope. I think that you may get less irritation and burns for the sole reason that you prepare your face a lot more when shaving with a straight razor (usually hot towel or steamy shower, quality shaving soap and brush, maybe even a preshave oil, let it soak in). People that are concerned more with time will generally skip all of these steps and grab a mach 3. You can get just as good a shave out of a mach 3 if you take the time to prep your face like you would with a straight razor.
shaykai 11 months ago
@kostiasXxX you also get a closer shave from a straight razor, and it's easier to get a straight and sharp design with a straight razor. For example chin straps.
sangederomin2003 10 months ago
@kostiasXxX I just switched recently and for me the 3-5 blade razors are much much slower. I usually only shave once a week and let in grow a bit. When it grows a little the regular razors get clogged with hair quick and it feels like every 1/4" of skin I'm having to rinse it to get all the hairs out so it will shave again. Even then it's doing a patch job where I have to go back over it several times. The straight razor is covering a lot more surface with less effort.
kevinb95 10 months ago
@shaykai Pardon my dear friend, but how many time did you cut yourself before shaving you right ?
estesoyojajaja 10 months ago
@kostiasXxX
Chilazr 10 months ago

People ask me why, i simply say, shaving is a lost art that takes time to perfect.

how often do you have to sharpen the blade ? and how much does it cost to have it sharpened by a barber or something like that?
rocketman468 1 year ago
@rocketman468 Depending on how well the sharpening is done, every few months at most. Say 2-4 times a year. Sharpening a straight razor is something you can fairly easily learn yourself. I did. It's not that hard.

Is "Shaving soap" required? Cause I tried with regular soap (Just got my first straight razor today) and it took a tiny amount off but I cant get the rest. I didnt have a lot to shave today, but I figured it would still work. The blade is plenty sharp.

Aren't you scratching the polish of the spine by honning without using any tape? btw, grappling, throwing knives, cutt throats, youre badass cool vid
plomari69 1 year ago
@plomari69 Yes you do polish off whatever is on the spine (my spine was painted black, and that has slowly worn down to silver). I just don't give a fuck ;) In all seriousness I believe that items that get used and acquire marks from that use develop a certain character. Like a tea pot you use over and over again, it almost becomes a member of a family. I know lots of people are obsessed with everything looking brand new, but I'm sort of the opposite way.
