  • dude. great vid. thanks for sharing. i have been so sick of going through razors over the years(1 per shave.yes my hair is that coarse). hundreds of pounds worth of plastic that must be out there from me alone. due to our "everything disposable" mentality. my uncle is a barber of 40yrs. i asked him about straight razor. he told me i didnt wanna mess with it. but really i do. besides.. some chicks dig scars ! oh an btw.. thanks for the comedic ending to the 2nd vid with the "weapon" .. lolz

  • I would love to try one of these, but am afraid of putting gashes in my face.

  • Learn before you post...

  • Good video. I understand that you're not gay, but I think you should at least try being bi. You would do well. If you need someone to teach you, totally hit me up. I will jump on that grenade sir.

  • Thanks alot for this. I got a set-up for Christmas, also with the idea that it's nice to have a reusable shaver (goin' 'green' and all that). When a Barber does it ya' just can't see what he's up to. Given the potential for self-mutilation, I REALLY appreciate the time you took to put this together-Thanks again Bro!

  • Nice tutorial. One question, whats the point of the strop?

  • @FineBowl The strop smooths the blade-edge after each shave. If you didn't strop your razor, the edge just gets rougher and rougher and rougher until you're basically shaving your face with a cheese-grater. Not a comfortable feeling. Stropping maintains the edge and gives you a comfortable shave until the blade itself is just too dull to shave anymore and must be resharpened.

  • Can't you use shaving cream?

  • @amarr1 Yes you can but I find that shaving cream leaves a thin film that is hard to get off the blade.

  • hey, people that dont want to pay a shitload to get into strait shaving, i got into it for a little over 20 bucks, and all of the stuff works great, though i do intend to upgrade, you can get into it for a lot less than 100 bucks

  • Is a water stone necessary? Can the leather strop suffice?

  • @NoNsToPuH The nicer blade you get the less a water stone becomes necessary. My blade and strap was $400 and taken care of properly it won't need be to sharpened for 40 years.

  • @NoNsToPuH Some sort of sharpening stone is necessary. The strop keeps the edge smooth. It doesn't actually sharpen it.

  • What is the name of the product to stop bleeding?

  • can i use a shaving gel

  • wat he didnt tell u is that septic stick thing stings like a bitch when u put it on a cut

  • Do you need to sharpen the blade every time you shave?

  • @wazaman0021 No, that would wear out the blade way too much. You should sharpen at most once a month although once a year is probably a better number. This is what the strop is for, it "touches up" the blade while only removing a little (if any) material. Once you get used to it you can tell when the blade needs sharpening based on the feel of the shave and stropping.

  • How well does a this razor work on your balls? not joking.

  • @Takkun5656 I haven't done that yet, it would make me a bit nervous haha.

  • @Takkun5656 please do not try shaving your balls with a straight razor, I fear for your scrotum.

  • @Takkun5656 well if ur really not joking, then i shall answer... mind i have two straight razors, one for my face... the other for down there (dont want my balls on my face:L) but honestly its really good, easy to keep it tidy, just take ur time cause if u slip (and i have already) it fuckin hurts :L

  • @Takkun5656 sounds like your intent on giving yourself a vasectomy lol

  • I did not understand what the function of the leather is.

  • @maanvol The function of the leather strop is to re-align the edge of the blade which gets warped and bent from cutting the hairs.

  • You jerk your hands around back and forth really fast for someone holding a straight razor. Good video

  • Could you use regular shaving cream?

  • Odd tip something that helps keep that edge between uses is to put a little gun oil on the sharpened edge it'll keep the blade from wearing down faster between uses, and you won't have to sharpen as much. Some people don't like it, but it hasn't failed me yet.

  • Thank you for the 2 part video. Very cool to get someone else's take on the set up and use.

  • did you just decide one day to purchase a straight razor and teach yourself or did someone teach you? i'm looking in to buying one, but i have never used a straight before so i'm wondering if it would be a waste of money.

    thanks for posting this video!

  • @07foxmulder I pretty much just bought a straight razor and went at it. I really didn't do a whole lot of research (a mistake) so I made a lot of errors in the beginning, including a few times where after the shave my face HURT like crazy and I had more than a few cuts haha. I have actually learned a lot about shaving since this video, and I currently shave with a double edged safety razor. It's not as challenging or as fun, but its nice not having to sharpen or strop the blade. check em out.

  • Astringent uh-strin-juhnt

  • That is really Cool Dude!!! Great Presentation...Down with the Mach 3 those prices are killer,,this looks like a Great Hobby...

  • So you take your girlfriends hairbrush lol. I really want to start Straight Razor shaving should i get a kit or buy everything separately?

  • Mmm, people from a local barbershop told me the knife gets warm from the canvas side. They also told me the knife only has to be stropped before you shave...

    Nice video, though.

  • either this man cant haggle or im too cheap cause i got all this stuff for about $50 brand new!

  • Hey, like the video. I am actually in the process of learning, and i was planning on teaching this as well. Is there anyway you might be able to give a few links where you found all of this information?

  • i would totally do this if i had more hours in my day

  • Be careful not to become Sweeney Todd !

  • Great video, I'm just wondering where you got that waterstone from?

  • Thanks for making this video, I needed to see this

  • I've been wanting to start this but it just seems too much time sharping the blade every time. Plus I'm scared of cutting myself. Great video though.

  • How often do you have to sharpen your blade if you shave let's say 1 time a week?

  • @BLUEWIZARD40

Sharpening a blade doesn't take long. And you only do it about once a month, once every two months. Once you get really good at it, you can sharpen a blade real good in under a minute.

  • @BLUEWIZARD40 Every few months, provided you've sharpened it correctly. But stropping should be done every time you shave.

  • and can you sharpen it after your done too that way the next day you can use it or does it need sharpend right before you use it and why does it need to be sharpened does it lose its sharpness

  • hey shaykai a straight razor is the first razor right

  • @Torahboy1 Nope sorry. Particular about my appearance because I'm slightly vain, I am fit because I train Boxing and Jiu-Jitsu, and I have a cute laugh because...? I don't know haha. It's just how I laugh!

  • @shaykai Oh, yeah. Now I've watched some of your other stuff, you're deffo not gay(!) Let's see..... you play Emo songs on your guitar, erm, you wear leather gear 'for protection' on your Japanese motorcycle, oh and you grapple semi-naked with guys (watched that one a few times, I can tell you.....). You are gayer than gay, you're MARVIN Gay. Not that I'm criticising you here, I'm a big fat gay thing myself. Just ask yourself this simple gay-test question: How wonderful is Barbara Streisand ?

  • @Torahboy1 It really is unfortunate that someone's sexuality can be judged based on looking good -.-.... Good video for the beginner shaykai!

  • @Torahboy1

What a terrible attempt at proving someone gay. Cute laugh and buff bod makes someone gay?

  • @Torahboy1 I'm sorry. That was so pathetic, it made me laugh.

  • @Torahboy1 Gaydar?

  • I started with using a Feather "Artist Club RG" razor. They have disposable blades, so you get the awesomeness of SE shaving without the trouble of stropping and sharpening.

Also, try the pro guard blades that are great for beginners because they have a wire mesh around the blade that keep you from cutting yourself badly. My first shave only got me a couple of small nicks that I sometimes even got from my mach 3.

  • I love how he laughs about cutting his face open

  • @shakykai, what brand is your straight razor?

  • there is something so classy and cool about shaving with a straight razor. Its economical, but the bottom line is you shave with it because you think its interesting.

  • lol u could grow a beard just preparing to shave

  • Do you use paste on your strop?

  • I just got my double edge saftey razor the other day. $40 razor $16 100 blades. Yeah, fuck you gillette and your $3 blades.

  • Any caualties at first ? I had a prosessionally honed razor and still cut myself to pieces !!! But i'm willing to try again !

  • Do you recomend a kit or buy everything separately. The kits i saw on the website in the description had a razor, strop, razor stand, a brush and a mug for the soap. No waterstone though. Thanks

  • Ive been really interested in doing this but my hair is kinda thick and growns weird on my neck. My question is on the second pass. I alwasy to a second pass with a saftey razor but I go in the opposite direction . Is that possible with the straight razor. Can you go in the opposite direction or will u mess your face up lol

  • @domenicocusumano Yes you can and I do, I explain this more in the second part of the series.

  • @domenicocusumano Yes you can, in fact many people recommend three passes for a shave that is still perfect into the night. (maybe only a couple of invisible stubbles) One with, the second across, and the third against the grain. The three passes are also exfoliating and help keep your complexion.

  • you dont have to take a shower, use a hot towel!! let it kick it on your face for about a minute, do that two or three times and your face should be ready to shave.

  • Rap music killed it

  • 290$ are you joking??? you got ripped off...you can go get the razor for 5$ and a pack of 10 blades for 3$ that are already extremely sharp..\..you dont have to buy special soap...the gay make up brushes or a stone. and a leather strop is the same thing as a belt. common sense USED to go along way...

  • @dukepharoah Since when is springing for quality GAY? I'm betting you do not use a SE razor. The difference between a razor using disposable blades and a real SE, aside from the fact still having to buy blades is pointless, is HUGE. As for the "290$ are you joking??", SE razors can run up to $800. If you're not using shaving soap, THEN a brush isn't necessary. With a real SE, if you want it to be sharp, a stone is obviously necessary. You definitely get what you pay for.

  • @dukepharoah Please don't talk about common sense with a post like that.

  • @dukepharoah you realize that $290 buys you almost a lifetime supply of shaving equipment, right? And your great-grandfather used the "gay make up brushes" to shave and probably would have used the razor on you if you called them gay or make-up brushes. As for the strop, most leather belts are made of "fair" quality leather at best. Most strops are made of "fine" or "Super fine" quality leather. A "fine" or "super fine" belt is $60+.

Straight razors are one of the lost arts of manhood.

  • @TheFiremonkeyman I taught myself to shave with a straight razor very successfully. $290 is MORE than enough to set you up for life. The only thing you replace is the shaving-soap (and maybe the brush every few decades). Everything else lasts forever so long as you don't abuse it in the course of shaving. I love straight-razor shaving and it is indeed a lost art that men used to pride themselves with.

  • holy shit, i was thinking about doing this to go green but when you said you can scar your face with it... FUCK THAT!

  • @gd129 Pussy. It's not that dangerous.

  • @Shangas Pussy? I shave my balls and I wouldn't want that anywhere near my manhood. It would be be embarrassing to go to the hospital with half your sack in some ice because you screwed up with a straight blade.

  • @sightf2 I rest my case...

  • 1:27 stiff dick lol

  • Chuck Norris shaves with a chainsaw and a bottle of jack!!!!

  • what was the name of that stick for cuts?

  • @TDONLEY91 They're called "Stypdic" pencils. They're used to clot wounds and cuts.

  • Hey shay. How did you melt the shaving soap in the mug like that?

  • @rocksmosh I put the soap in the container and then I put the container in a pot of hot (almost boiling) water. After 2-3 minutes the soap inside had taken the shape of the container. I then took it out and let it cool.

  • @shaykai aah, I though so. Thank you for your help!

  • Thanks for showing us how to do everything right. I finally switched over a couple weeks ago. So far I like it a lot. A couple nicks, and mustache and chin areas are still tricky, but I'm getting better.

  • I don't even have a beard yet, why am I watching this?

  • @wafflecushioned same, I'm not even 15 yet

  • @wafflecushioned Because watching it will encourage your beard to grow.

  • I use these to kill people.

  • The "new technology" of multi blade razorsactually pulls your hair up and then cuts it. This can cause ingrown hairs. Straight razors just shave the hair off. The new technology" razors are designed to be thrown away, so that you will keep buying more fore the rest of your life!

  • Hey guys, can anybody answer me, what is the difference between a straight razor and the 3 blade razors (e.g Gillete) thanks. I am just very curious!

  • @kostiasXxX A mach3 razor is designed to hold 3 blades at a specific angle necessary for shaving. A straight razor is just 1 blade, and there is nothing to hold it at a specific angle, this is why new users often cut themselves.

  • @shaykai Yes I know that. I mean why do people (like you e.g) prefer the straight razor, when there are new shaving technologies (with 3 blades as you said). I just want to say that with the 3 blades, you shave faster and as I can see, its more safer than the straight one. What are the advantages that a straight has, and i 3blade doesnt have.

  • @kostiasXxX I think it's mainly just the 'cool' factor. The same reason why some people drive classic cars when a Honda Civic is perfectly capable of getting you from point A to point B. I don't think I get a better shave with a straight razor than I would get with a mach 3, and with a straight razor I'm definitely slower. BUT I have to admit that shaving is a lot more fun and challenging with a straight razor. It's also quite a bit 'cooler'.

  • @shaykai So, it doesnt have to do with irritation or burns? Maybe with the straight one you get less irritation nd burns?

  • @kostiasXxX Nope. I think that you may get less irritation and burns for the sole reason that you prepare your face a lot more when shaving with a straight razor (usually hot towel or steamy shower, quality shaving soap and brush, maybe even a preshave oil, let it soak in). People that are concerned more with time will generally skip all of these steps and grab a mach 3. You can get just as good a shave out of a mach 3 if you take the time to prep your face like you would with a straight razor.

  • @kostiasXxX you also get a closer shave from a straight razor, and it's easier to get a straight and sharp design with a straight razor. For example chin straps.

  • @kostiasXxX I just switched recently and for me the 3-5 blade razors are much much slower. I usually only shave once a week and let in grow a bit. When it grows a little the regular razors get clogged with hair quick and it feels like every 1/4" of skin I'm having to rinse it to get all the hairs out so it will shave again. Even then it's doing a patch job where I have to go back over it several times. The straight razor is covering a lot more surface with less effort.

  • @shaykai Pardon my dear friend, but how many time did you cut yourself before shaving you right ?

  • @kostiasXxX

Multi-blade cartridges are designed so the first blade literally pulls the hair out of the skin a bit, and subsequent blades cut it. That's true for razors with 2+ blades. That's why you get the tugging sensation even with new cartridges. This results in ingrown hairs and burn, even with well-prepped skin. Single blade razors are just crazy-sharp and cut the hair very smoothly. This leaves very little, to no irritation and a much more pleasant experience.

  • How do you when to switch from 4000 to 8000 grit. Also, when you shave a 3 day beard should there be any pull at all with a honed shave ready blade or should it go right through like you have nothing at all?

  • Here's the link if anyone's interested...they're vegan, organic, made from good quality ingredients. I HIGHLY recommend them!

    etsy.com/listing/67458920/eco-friendly-shaving-kit-with-beer

  • Awesome...I've been using a straight razor for a few years, but I only had ONE razor that was an antique in an unopened box and in perfect condition...IT was great, but I lost it on a road trip and haven't found a good comparable one. I'm not concerned with price as much as quality. I've seen them for up to 250, but it seemed to be more about design. In the meantime you should check out Orange Fuzz on Etsy. They have awesome shaving soaps that smell great and are made from different beers

  • Do you have a a recommended brand of razor? I'm not having luck in that arena.

  • @andrewjasonfuller Yeah, pretty much anything made by Dovo is pretty good, but even the cheapest one is around 50 bucks.

  • you look like the dude off the movie rampage.. look it up on netfix and you will die laughing if you watch the movie ha

  • do you use the whetstone before every shave?

  • @acdcboy You use the strop before each shave. The whetstone about once a month.

  • wow... I like your vid, it's informative, but I have learned it's just too time consuming for me...

  • U look like a man tht does great things!!! all men should use straight razors!!!

  • Chuck Norris uses his fingernails to shave.

  • Sweet video. Thanks for posting. (Never thought I'd spend 20 minutes watching another dude shaving on the Internet, but there's a first for everything!)

  • Hey man, thanks for the videos, they were a big help.

I'm loving my straight razor shaves, but I keep having to "clean up" a couple hard spots (curvey bits of my neck and jaw) with a safety razor after... Any tips for that? How about a video focusing on the hard to get spots?

  • Thank you for this. I have wanted a straight razor for along time since I to am getting tired or all those stupid razors. I think my wife might be getting me one for Christmas.

  • 1. do not pull your skin tight! look up Moroccan shavers... their method makes much more sense if you struggle with razor burn, ingrowns, or acne

    2. great vids! but i've seen that hair cutting trick 100 times on the 3 Stooges

  • @b0ssh0gg Thank you! I've looked up how the Moroccans shave and they do advocate having a 'loose' skin instead of stretching it tight. I'm going to try this technique (as well as a few others they have!) next time I shave. Thank you b0ss

  • in canada.. at the mall.. cheap razor with replaceable blades: 15, +12 for 10 (or 20 if you break em in half) razors.. badger brush with stand $55, shaving soap $12, the strap was $75 but i didnt buy it... nice permanent razor was $185 and DEFINITELY did not buy it... silver stand for razor, brush, and soap bowl: $250. this stuff is not cheap folks but can stay with you til you have a son who needs to shave. good luck, going to do my first shave now!

  • 1:48..."How'd you get that scar? Eating pussy?" 'How am I gonna get this scar eating pussy mang?'-Scarface lol

  • So how often do you sharpen your razor and how do you store your badger brush?

  • Straights should be sharpened about once a month/once every two months (or whenever you fuck up the edge) and should be stropped before and after each use.

  • Question... I just got a straight razor and was wondering if you have to use shaving cream... I only use warm water with normal razors, can I do this with the straight razor?

  • @AquaThane Yes you can, usually for the second pass I just use warm water now. If you do use shaving soap it might help you get less irritation when you are starting out.

  • @AquaThane no dude no not worth it use your cream best is the soap that they sell and u mix up with a badger brush and aply

  • Just hot water should work alright, although it's best with shaving-cream as well.

  • i think I'll stay with blades... this seems dangerous

  • Do you sanitize the blade? Like barbers sinitize there sissors in blue water?

  • @KISSarmyist Nope I'm the only one that uses it so I don't see a need to sanitize it.

  • Dude that's wayyyyy to much work!! I'll just stick with the cheap disposable blades and call it a day.

  • I just stare into the mirror and scare my beard out.

  • @chaosaxis Like a BOSS!

  • @chaosaxis wow your the second person who has done that, after Chuck Norris!

  • Great video. Nice and straight forward, no filler. But it's got lots of little tips and tricks that beginners really need.

  • Really great video - not pretentious, very accessible style. My first straight razor arrives later this week - progressing from disposable to safety to straight now.

  • Great tutorial. I've been curious about using a straight razor for awhile because I wanted to tap back into one of the fading roots of being a man, and this gives me an idea of what that's all about. Girlfriend's been bugging me about gift ideas for the holidays and a straight razor sounds perfect. If I don't slice my throat open and bleed out maybe this will pass down through the family tree :P

  • Even though i don't own a straight razor, because im 16, i shave slowly. I enjoy my shaving time, sometimes it might take me half an hour to shave. People ask me why, i simply say, shaving is a lost art that takes time to perfect.

  • @metalgear418 yeah wait until you get older and you'll understand that shaving needs to be fast and clean.

  • how often do you have to sharpen the blade ? and how much does it cost to have it sharpened by a barber or something like that?

  • @rocketman468 Depending on how well the sharpening is done, every few months at most. Say 2-4 times a year. Sharpening a straight razor is something you can fairly easily learn yourself. I did. It's not that hard.

  • This was a huge help - thanks so much for making it. I actually managed to not to cut myself too badly on the first try (with a 50-ish year old razor, too).

  • lol nice ending to part 2

  • How long will a straight blade last is properly cared for?

  • @MaximusZTS Probably longer than you will live.

  • @shaykai u will save money..and they never clog!

  • @shaykai great job kid..50 more years and u will catch up to me...lol

  • @MaximusZTS I'm using my grandpa's straight razor and he bought it.... 1920s or 1930s... and it's still in perfect shape.

  • @MaximusZTS Looked after PROPERLY, a straight razor will last for centuries. I've seen videos and read stories (and seen actual razors) that are over 100 years old (and older) which still shave perfectly.

  • @MaximusZTS well i still use my greatgrandfathers.it was made in 1897..and its still woks and its sharp as hell..

  • @MaximusZTS

some razors that were manufactured before the american civil war are still being used.

  • @MaximusZTS If properly cared for, forever. A cousin of mine has a straight razor that's been handed down since the late 1600's, when his ancestor was a posh barber in london england.

  • HAHAHA THE CAPTIONS SUCK!!

  • you waste a lot of water bro

  • Awesome! Just what I needed to know since I decided to go straight razor. Thank bro!

  • 250 QUID !!!!!!!!! dude bought a roles razor steight edge for 2.50 !! unlucky man :L

  • Its a styptic pen, its made of Aluminum Sulfate. (alum blocks are the same thing) yeah it "puckers" the skin and helps clot the blood closing the cut...Thanks for the vid!

  • is this better than gelletes proglide?

  • @lardospanko Yes.

  • so it's easy to sharpen a straight razor because the spine is what you use as the angle ???

  • I took up straight-shaving nearly a month ago. I bought a 2nd-hand razor for $35 & honed it myself on a 2-side honing-stone & stropping on an old belt (leather). The results are AMAZING!! Forget your plastic six-blade pussy-vibrator gilette pieces of crap. This is the REAL way to shave. Perfect every time & as Shay says, hell of a lot cooler. Plus, you save money.

  • Aren't they called cut throat razors in America as well? or is just what they call them in England? (or what my Dad told me they're called) :S

  • @tony36009 The proper term is 'straight razor', 'straight-edge' or 'open' razor. The term 'cut-throat' razor is just a nickname.

  • @Shangas aha thank you :D

  • should I strop on both the leather and LINEN before every shave?

  • real men shave with rocks.

  • i just use normal handsoap

  • is there any reason you use that kind of soap? wouldn't shaving foam work just as well?

  • @tireironman In general if you use something like shaving cream or shaving foam it tends to leave a sort of slimey film on the razor that is hard to get off. Shaving soap washes clean off.

  • @shaykai Is there a way I can practice straight edge shaving without cutting my skin? I know I would cut myself pretty badly if I start on my skin right away .

  • that part about cutting yourself and getting a scare was not encouraging.

  • u say u got the straight razor for 90 but u can get a perfectly good one for way cheaper??

  • @2k10Ricky Yes you can. I actually almost always use a disposable straight razor now called the Parker 2. I picked it up for 20 bucks and got like hundreds of blades for a few dollars more. All the pleasure of shaving with a straight razor with none of the sharpening!

  • @shaykai But sharpening IS fun...

  • Is "Shaving soap" required? Cause I tried with regular soap (Just got my first straight razor today) and it took a tiny amount off but I cant get the rest. I didnt have a lot to shave today, but I figured it would still work. The blade is plenty sharp.

  • Aren't you scratching the polish of the spine by honning without using any tape? btw, grappling, throwing knives, cutt throats, youre badass cool vid

  • @plomari69 Yes you do polish off whatever is on the spine (my spine was painted black, and that has slowly worn down to silver). I just don't give a fuck ;) In all seriousness I believe that items that get used and acquire marks from that use develop a certain character. Like a tea pot you use over and over again, it almost becomes a member of a family. I know lots of people are obsessed with everything looking brand new, but I'm sort of the opposite way.

  • Now i really want one

  • you are one cool motherfucker. seriously.

  • thank you, very well done, and good personality
