  • Does whole foods throw out food like this? Is it easy finding fruits and veggies? It looks like you guys scored a bunch of meat and sweets type stuff but i didn't see much of the actual healthy food that i would be interested in.

  • @answertotodayis1776 It depends a lot on the actual whole foods location. Some throw away nearly zero, and some throw away lots of great fruits and veggies. There were lots of sweets in there, yeah, but there was some good stuff too. We had to feed more than 7 people, so we weren't terribly picky. Video #2 has the actual haul filmed. Good luck!

  • nice to have a dumster like that but most of the stores in my city have compacters and you cant evon get in them witch sucks bad i guss

  • Your video makes me wonder what the trader joes near my house throws out. I had no idea of the waste. Seems they could separate and throw the bad out and not the entire package, poss sell the remainder at a discount?

  • @GasmanTen this particular TJ's has revamped their waste procedure and they incorporate a compost bin. The only remaining trash items are meat, dairy, eggs, and miscellaneous. I only scored about 50 bucks (replacement cost, for example filet minion 1 lb valued @ $2) last time I was there. Other less wasteful places will actually throw more usable food out. I'd love to hear that you found some goodies and at least had some fun!

  • My aunt called my parents over one night to come get free pop. She wasnt kidding. We walked in to find her floor lined with countless 2-liters of Coke products. Coke, diet coke, caffine free diet coke, and the gawd awful diet lemon coke

  • just another day of hobo shoping.

  • Yay! well done! Food recycling!

  • I have been diving in Australia for years eat the meat and the only time I have got sick was when I had a paid meal in a restaurant.

  • Good job guys, I applaud you.

  • EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!

  • @NtoxicatedForum OMG! omGGGGGGG!!!!

Kidding aside, you've demonstrated that you're a combination of the following attributes: plush with funds/income, elitist, poor imagination, have trouble with resolution of cognitive dissonance.

Question: What value are you to society? Are we best off...without you? Why or why not? A positive and well justified "no" answer would be most refreshing after your surprisingly idiotic moment above. Maybe you were intoxicated? Sigh.

  • @MovingUpp I have a job so I dont have to eat from garbage bins. Thank you. :-)

  • @NtoxicatedForum I have 2 houses and a triplex paid in full. I work for myself. I don't have to eat from garbage bins. Thank you :-*sigh*

  • @MovingUpp Sure you do. Now stop sighing, princess, it makes you seem like youre in love with me.

  • @NtoxicatedForum Certainly do. I'd expect the princess to be the one who lacks the strength to overcome their false prejudgement of food quality...

  • @MovingUpp If it makes you feel better, I wont go on about this topic any further. Good night, sir!

  • @NtoxicatedForum congratulations

  • @NtoxicatedForum if it was a dumpster full of cash, would you not take it because you have a job?

I have a job too, and have never dumpster dived, but i want to after watching this. They're sort of making like $300 an hour just hanging out with friends...

  • @MoldytoasterMedia A dumpster full of cash? Youre dreaming.

Tell me how your dumpster diving activities fair.

  • @NtoxicatedForum A penny saved is a penny earned.

  • @NtoxicatedForum well I "do research" meaning i noticed Dollar General and after a while I figured Tuesday was their trash day so hit it saturday/sunday. When I do find stuff its pretty good.

  • Could'ent someone with obviously no friends and lots of time take all the bread and feed ducks or canada geese?

  • @SOUPRUN01 clever. It's extra labor, and would cause instability in their food supply. They'd starve to death after the bird feeder got tired of the activity

  • @SOUPRUN01 W'ell then they should build all supermarkets on hills and have (cost free) shutes that deliver a dripfeed of bread prouducts. Either that or we need to start training baby canada geese to dumpster dive.

  • im proud to be a dumpster diver :D its how i make a living

  • I praise you on your humbleness but I still wouldn't do it. Not because of pride but because the possibility of getting contaminated food is too great even though the food in the store could be contaminated as well.

I'll stick to my gardening, fishing, friends who hunt, and coupons.

But it is amazing how much food is wasted. Lucky our little town is great in taking left overs or over stock to local charities and rehab centers.

  • The only drawback of dumpster diving is that there is so much stuff out there that you basically need to have a large amount of people to carry, shift and eat it all.

Not to mention the freezer space needed.

All I say is, don't make a mess, leave the place looking untouched and you can return time and again.

Don't fuck it up for others and yourselves.

  • Anyone that thinks this video is staged, needs to go take a look for themselves.

I've been doing this for a couple of years and always get good stuff, never got sick and I never ever have to pay for stuff like bread.

  • I can't seem to convince anyone I know how great of a practice this is. You always grow up just being told how nasty, disgusting, and foolish it is to do this--and I guess it is nasty and disgusting (just to be in a dumpster, I mean), but the rewards are amazing. Could you imagine what we could accomplish if there were more people in the world doing this, going the extra mile to help feed hungry families? We could make an enormous dent in world hunger. You are citizens doing your part, and I re

  • tenically they could have gotten these guys for trespassing because that was not a public dumpster it was locked and they jumped the wall............

  • I dumpster dive for coupons at a recycling dumpter. I have dumpter dived at apartments and got cool stuff like dishes and stuff. I have a family member that dumpter dives at plant nurseries for plants. I have never thought of doing it for food.

  • i plan on traveling to maui and spending between a couple weeks to years living for free

  • you guys know y they throw all the stuff out becuz its Trader Joes!!! Organic food!

  • When I was a little kid, my Dad had permission from our local grocery to dive their dumpster to feed our pigs. The food (cases of apples and cabbages, etc.) was often in such good shape, we'd eat it ourselves. The only reason someone would not feel "comfortable" with the idea is because they are a lawyer or their parents didn't introduce them to the idea that waste is a sin but instead took them to the mall to shop for video games.

  • If you get over the fact that it is from a dumpster its just like regular food. Me and my friend did this one time and had a bbq the next day with 20 people there all from dumpster diving.

  • @debater71 We often throw dinner parties and all our friends are cool with it. In fact, I wouldn't be friends with someone too stuck up to eat perfectly good food just because it was tossed in a dumpster. I distribute to friends as well. They often call me to let me know that they've gone days eating only things I foraged. It's something to be proud of. And money doesn't grow on trees unless you're in the top 1%.

  • imfreeganout

  • @nosmailliwydocbocaj its easier to get forgiveness than is is to get permission. just do it. ask and they will say "no" and keep an eye out for you.

  • You pay good money for aged beef. Those steaks will be real tender if they been in there for at least 24 hours. :)

  • GRAND THEFT TRASH!!!!!!!

  • I love your video! I've done bin diving lots. Only dumpster dived a couple times. I kinda don't know where to look to do it. Or how to find food. I guess I live in a small town and most stuff is locked up.

  • 1st of all...I like your video. Let me correct you guy's on a few things. 1. DONT SAY THE STORE NAME ON VIDEO! (Stores don't like it when people welcome people to there dumpsters) 2. CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELVES LIKE NO ONES BEEN THERE. (If you leave the slightest evidence of a presence or mess on goes the lock. 3. YOU MUST REVIEW YOUR MANCIPLE CODE ABOUT LOCAL LAWS. (It may be legal in your area but STAY CLEAR OF "No Trespassing sighs.) All in all.. "Show people your trashure and not your map".
  • 3:15 It's not just other countries that are starving: "...12.4 million American children are living in food insecure households. It seems unreal that in one of the wealthiest nations of the world, little children are still going hungry."

  • i wanna go dumpster diving, when my mom and i used to check the dumps behind our local store, we would get cases of chips and such

  • your so lucky my grosery stores in my area all have compactors you can not get in them but that looks like nice stuff then just a free for all

  • your so lucky my grosery store have compactors you can not get in them but that looks like nice stuff then just a free for all

  • you guys are amazing theres nothing wrong with what u're doing u know how many people go hungry

  • Great job guys keep up the good work and help those in need!

  • Great job guys I do it almost nightly, and yes it's all true. We Americans are the most wasteful society that there is. I've been dumpster diving for over 20 years and I'm a nurse and if I was rich I would still do it. I give food that I don't use away to people that can use it.

  • I've been dumpster diving for 20 plus years, never been sick from anything. I go almost nightly. Whatever I don't need or have to much of I give to someone in need. I also let them know where it came from. What they say is true, if the meat is warm or looks bad then don't get it, I just found 5 slabs of ribs still cold 13.00 per pack and they tasted just as good as any meat that you would buy from the store. So I say great job guys, keep up the good work and share with the needy.

  • @nosmailliwydocbocaj wally world isnt the same,,they keep it totally secured.

  • man... stores dont throw out a bunch of meat with a week left on the expiry date. even when its been on special to get it sold when nearing the expiry date, and doesnt sell, they just change the expiry date by another day. they do not throw away meat for no reason. they would not make money with attitudes like that. this is staged. this is not how it is. go look in a dumpster for yourselves people. this videos full of shit

  • @tubestick00 You omitted a few possibilities: it was a customer return or was forgotten to be refrigerated or had slightly punctured/torn outer wrapping, to name a few.

I'll second you on "go look in a dumpster for yourself people" though.

  • @MovingUpp if the packet the meat is in is damaged the package will be replaced. they have thousands of them out the back. if it was accidentally not refridgerated... then you wouldnt wanna eat it. you cant return meat unless theres something actually wrong with it, in which case you also dont want to eat it... unless you dont mind food poisoning. i know there is some good stuff in there, but not fresh lovely steaks. thats setup.

  • @tubestick00 not fake. but this is a rare find

  • @tubestick00 You are 100% wrong here. I go once or twice a week and there is always meat being tossed that is close to the expiration date but is still fine. You put it in the freezer as soon as you get home or toss it all in a big pot and cook it up. My dog has eaten nothing but NY strip steaks ($16/lb.) and organic chicken for the past year. I occasionally eat the meat if it's a cold night, the meat is still cold, it smells fine, and hasn't expired.

  • @johnfournier77 right. you must live near a store with fucked up management.

  • @tubestick00 It doesn't have to do with store management. It has to do with corporate policy, with the logistical complexity of the "extremely efficient" grocery and food system in the U.S., and also with laws and potential lawsuits over donating food. Basically, Americans won't buy a box of cereal if the box is dented or scratched. It doesn't matter that the cereal inside is in a bag. The blemished box won't sell so why let it take up valuable shelf space?

  • @johnfournier77 well i must admit im not from america and by all accounts your country is a wastefull beast.

in new zealand nobody is like that. we are a bit more down to earth than most americans, although im not talking about you, your clearly a realist. for a dented box to be thrown out is sick, and its no surprise your nations defecit is around 10 trillion dollars. things will be very different through the next 20 years so enjoy the rich dumpster picking while you can. waste is inexcusable

  • @tubestick00 I agree completely that I have easy pickings. I am exploiting a winfall much like a bear who finds ripe apples littering the ground. On a typical evening, I may come home with a dozen pounds (cans dented, of course) of brand new gourmet coffee, a couple hundred loaves of bread, 50 lbs. of organic apples, etc. It fills my patio and becomes a logistics problem. I have a distribution network of down-to-earth friends who come by once a week for the free food.

  • @tubestick00 hey tube...in fact trader joes consistently does this at most locations.

it is senseless yes but for a solid 2 years or so in Hollywood i gathered every weekend for my friends and got it to the people...till i left for hawaii. wish t j s would open here. :)

  • @FORESTTEMPLE yeah... so if you find yourself down and out, and homeless, go find a trader joes.

  • @tubestick00 Its funny one of my best finds was around 50 lbs of meat including at least 15 packs of bacon, and expensive hams, sausages, and hot dogs. Not to mention the at least 250 rolls of gift wrapping paper i salvaged yesterday. Stores don't throw away good stuff? I invite you to come with me on a trip then!

  • @colchinzer well perhaps i was wrong. i live in a different country, and here people dont waste like the u.s.a does.... a country where a homeless starving man, on the streets after the insurance company decided not to pay his medical bills, can be arrested for eating out of the bin, is a sick country.

  • @tubestick00 haha why not come have some fine cod I just got the other night? Or perhaps you like chicken better? Maybe some ground beef? I got 5 lbs off it to spare. It is because of this wastefull attitude that we have many problems in this society.

  • i find scrap metal and other useable items , that i donate or sell ,crazy what people throw out .

  • how do you know if the steack is good?

  • I need to hang out with you guys!

  • This makes me sick. Why couldn't they send this stuff anonymously to hungry people? POWER TO THE DUMPSTER DIVERS!!

  • that no mess policy wasn't even respected by everyone in the video. The dumpster is now locked with a high quality lock.

    ...

It's nice entering into a clean dumpster area. What a relief.

  • I am a capitalist straight up. But i don't oppose what they are doing. At least they are not standing on a corner with a sign. More power to you guys. Just make sure you stick to that "leave no mess policy". Its awesome you respect the hand that feeds you not bite it.

  • how do I get in touch with the guy who made this video? I have some questions???

  • Theres a sainsburrys near by im so tempted to go down there.

  • I found a brand new lava lamp in the original box unused in the garbage. I also found whole rolls of TP that haven't been opened. I can never find food around here.

  • I dumpster dive. But I do the metal and stuff. I'm going to start food dumpster diving. I'm a big kid, and play football, so my mom spends alot of money on food a month. We could save so much.

  • Dumpster divers rock! when I have extras, I give to food pantries, list it on Freecycle and free stuff on Craigslist.

  • This is great.I'm starting.

  • I've been dumpster diving for years! Not only food but real good clothes, that can either be sold or bartered. Americans are so wasteful!

  • Holy damn! Are there turf wars over this yet?

  • Are there any organisations that exclusively do this to feed homeless people? Would that even be possible with legal issues?

  • @kegs666 Yes there is, a very well known organization is called food not bombs. They dumpster for food, or its donated to them and then they usually set up a couple times a week in city's all over the country and give the homeless food or anyone who wants it.

  • @kegs666 my guess would be it is legal for that to happen, all thats required is an organization to communicate with the local branch of grocery store or wherever and offer them publicity when they contribute to a good cause. ^__^

  • In the end, it's still garbage. But hey, the more power to you if you're comfortable with being the scavengers of society.

  • @nosmailliwydocbocaj if there are people around who might see you, ask first. Wal-marts are pretty iffy in my book. I'm pretty sure that the larger the store, the less humanitarian their policies are.

  • yeah, make sure you test the eggs in water to see if they float before you eat them. If they float, they're no good, they're floaters

  • never never never go with the really red. They use chemicals now to keep it looking fresh and red longer. Temperature may be the best judge.

  • you should go back to work. there are TOO many mexicans here.

  • @tribeofgaul hehe. You're making me thirsty for some fresh juicy border meat. ^_^. Ouch that's controversial.

  • Haiti could really use all of these dumpsters!

  • hello freegans

  • Amazing video. I worked at a so-called gourmet supermarket for several months, and watched hundreds of dollars of perfectly edible produce and bread go into the trash every single day. They refused to allow employees to take any of it home, and they were so paranoid about dumpster divers that they attached a $5,000 masher to the dumpster. America is disgraceful.

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for taking the time to give people some hope. Another way to have fun for free! Thanks again :-)

  • looks like some fun

  • i need to do this for a living. Im subscribing you since you made this video

  • here they use compactor units or they lock their dumbpsters

  • cont- about $2000 worth of Fredricks of Hollywood lingere in a box with a couple of wigs LOL and the thigh-high vinyl boots were size womans 12 so I know this was a mans items! came with 2 Gorgeous dresses, 2 corsettes, etc.

  • I love dumpster diving! we call it 'looking'. "Were going 'looking' tonight." anyway, here in boise ID we go on sunday night/monday morning..not going to say where, but we make our rounds & we havnt gotten food, but we get items we like, stuff to sell on eBay, etc. Best find...Recording machine that copies 1 tape to another in 1 1/2 minutes. It brought us $500 on ebay! other great stuff: 14 kg bracelet, plastic crayon piggybank $30 worth of pennies, $300 worth of concert DVDs

  • WOW

  • i made up a new word today......freeganizing!

  • sorry dude i meant to give you a thumbs up... great finds!!!

  • I do it now because I got layed off a year ago after 19 years of honest work. I am putting myself through college to get a better job in the future but this is what I need to do in order to keep in school and keep my little home. Once you know what and where to go for, its really a treat. Some days I eat like a king and others its standard fare. Im am cool with it all.

  • I wish more people knew about it.

  • great job & video guy's, keep them coming!!!

  • I apologize for the negative response but I have seen more then my full share of dumpster video's on YouTube. I admire that you guy's are finding this solid food stuff packaged in all. I have the best of luck of what you call dumpster "crack". I find thing's top shelve retail value but I can't eat that. LMFAO. I also admire that your are educating the ignorant about dumpster diving as do I. There is no need for people to starve while there is good legal food in the dumpster. Nice job fellas.

  • this is great!

  • Follow up: I got pulled over for not having a headlight, just after dumpstering.

The cops noticed the food and we discussed that it was dumpstered and they thought it was good that the food didn't go to waste. They still gave me the 10 dollar fix-it ticket, though.

Mind you, the cops in my town aren't dicks. They didn't get me for not having a bumper, license plate lights, or any of that jazz.-- lol

This is time #2 I've been dumpstering and had a run-in with the police. Both times were good.

  • LOL no license plate either?

  • Hehe. Usually the license plate is attached to the bumper, but I zip tied it through some arm-sized holes. (p.s. my car is put back together now. lol)

  • ancient artform of resourcefulness!! Keep up the great recycling! "Waste Naught, want naught"... :) Let the bafoonies keep pitching!!!!!

  • This store had consistently enormous amounts of food waste. Other stores nearby did not. There are three TJ's stores in my town of 89,000. The homeless shelter I asked buys half of their food still.

Since the making of this video, this store has reduced its food waste considerably. No longer can we expect 2 to 4 fourty gallon bags of food. It's still good pickings, though.

And if no prude finds out they're giving away non-'health department'-ok'd food, then there should be no problem...

  • This is not an accurate representation nof all the hard work trader joes employees put into food donations. For example, a lot of the reason meat gets thrown away is because in many counties throughout the country (fairfax for example) you are not allowed to donate meat products. Trader Joes donates rediculous amounts of their spoils to homeless shelter's many more bags that are in those dumpsters. This many times has too doo with the problem of over-ordering at many times (like at christmas)

  • I am utterly amazed that they trash this much food instead of donating it to a homeless shelter!!!!

I am curious though, do you guys ever get sick with food poisoning?

  • Back in the old days I wasn't very familiar with meat going bad. I felt strange for almost a day, but it tasted strange enough that I didn't eat a whole lot of it.

Since then, my meat products have been peer reviewed to be 'veli-naice' ('very nice' in kazakastanian)

  • Holy crap! That is all good food! I am pissed to see places throw that out!

    I am SOOOO turning FREEGAN!!!

Damm the man for tossing all that stuff out!

  • PLEASE PUT UP A WEBSITE WITH YOUR DUMPSTER DIVING. In this economy you could seriously teach people the pros and cons about it and the video is honestly hypnotizing

  • Great video. Do you guys ever think about getting a pressure cooker and canning up some of this stuff? Canned tomato sauce, apple sauce, etc.

  • TravistyCH, your post is unnessesarily negative. Not a good post when you are plugging you own channel.

  • There's a fruit & veg shop in Eastwood, Nottingham. I go either every night after they close, or first thing in morning (between 5am and 530am) to see what goodies they have. Yesterday I got 5 cauliflowers, a huge bag of red potatoes the size of salad potatoes, and five bunches of flowers. This morning, I got a big firm green cabbage and two bunches of flowers. Going again tonight or in morning.

  • its sad that places throw away all that food, nice vid keep it up woot woot

  • Anarchy to the masses!!

  • you guys rock on!

  • we are taught a lot of bullshit. just as long as we wake up one day and free ourselves from all these politically correct things they have pounded in our heads as kids and youngsters. Look beyond and you will find freedom& treasures. respect to you guys!

  • It makes me sick that people waste all this food when there are people starving everywhere.

  • Wow, amazing! I gotta check it out here where I live.

  • good score crazy about the Christmas trash dive! I can't belive all the stuff we find we can't even take it all! worst amount of food I saw wasted was a 1/2 dumpster full of bags of perfectly good potatoes! Keep posting and diving!

  • very nice!

  • Where is this store located?

  • Excellent video....very sensible. I like it ! ;-) .. I can't beleive that T.D's throws out such excelent food, consistently ! (This from an experienced DD'er (from the U.K.)) Oh and I like your commentary style! hee....

  • Yeah I like how you actually walk us through the process of dumpster diving. I've always been a bit wierded out about it since I never saw it, but I can see that it's really not that bad.

  • Thats the best dumpster diving video I've ever seen. Free Food For Life!
