I like your mindset, the chorus is awsome, and yeah the "toilet guitar" parts are too much, but I think the original gives the song breaks and then anticipation of the "whamo" parts. Overplaying chorus heavy songs is what gets people tired of them, and gives them an "overplayed" feel. That said, yes you have pinpointed the saving grace of the song.
