this is the GREATEST version of this great AMERICAN CLASSIC !!! Even God could not perform this better !!! Please forgive me for saying that all you devout christians ) (which i am. )Darin OWNS this song !!! Brad Savage -- Lifelong BD fan.
@alzahad It always blows me away that a German communist's creepy organ-grinder song about murder and rape was translated and turned into a big, pop-chart hit in America. I'm from a younger, post-cold-war generation and can't quite wrap my head around it. Did people know what he was singing about, and did they know about the musical it's from? I guess the gangster image back then was comparable to the popularity of gangster rap today. And I agree, Darin's version is definitely the absolute best.
Bobby, you've made Ten Films, won Two Grammy's, sold over Two Million records and got nominated for an academy award...What the hell more do you want?
Bobby Darin is truly the owner of this song. What a talent. Anyone else who would try to claim fame to his song would be like someone else wearing #23 and thinking they are going to be the next Jordan. It's just not going to happen.
Back in the day before assasinations were commonplace, a guy named Dick Tuck trailed "Tricky Dick" Nixon on the camapign trail, and pulled a lot of pranks. The very best, was him posing as an advance man for Nixon during a train whistle stop campaign. He went to the local high school band, and told the band director "Mack the Knife" was Nixon's favorite song. Soooooooo, as the train pulled into the town the band struck up the tune, much to the chagrin of the Nixon campaign. How hilarious!
Also...not 'only' is Bobby Darin the GREATEST singer of this song...but 'this' version, with Darin singing on the docks...this is the 'DEFINITIVE' and GREATEST version of Mr. Bobby Darin Belting it out ,and entering his name, for posterity, into the record books of the Worlds greatest performers !! Pure AMERICANA and Folks, this is 'the' PERFORMANCE ! Brad Savage ---
No one on this earth can do this like Darin ! Bobby Darin 'owns' this song and always always always will ! I can remember in 1959 and 1960 (at the tender age of 5) people were ELECTRIFIED by this man putting this great song over and bringing the house down in so performing it ! Darin is the 'Master' of this song and nobody nobody shall ever dethrone him ! Brad Savage --LifeLong Bobby Darin fan !
My favorite version of this song is actually by Nick Cave. It's much or dark and morbid, but from what I understand, that is exactly how the character, Macheath, is supposed to be portraid.
Bobby Darin was right up there with Elvis and Frank ! A tremendous talent, definitely one of the GREATEST singers of the 20th century. STYLE ? He had 'style' to spare ! I have loved this song for 51 of my 55 years and THIS is the GREATEST version ! C-L-A-S-S-I-C ! Brad Savage ---Lifelong Bobby Darin Fan.
@alzahad Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, both did this song. Then, Walden Robert Perciville Cassotto; AKA Bobby Darin, came along and did it too.Frank Sinatra then tried his hand at it. Generally speaking, once Sinatra sings a song, he owns it - no one can match the genious of Sinatra's phrasing ... but not this time, no one ever did this song better than Bobby Darin!!!
@wire4paladin how about Lou Rawls' version of 'One For My Baby 'versus
your blue eyes'? There are a lot of singers who sang better, with more feeling, and who didn't sound like they were reading notes from a sheet. Give me a freakin' break!
@GeneHJoseph U obviously don't know the magnitude of Sinatra's impact on music. Sinatra would take a song, hire an arranger, and then instruct the arranger to arrange the song around his inimitable phrasing/timing of lyric.Thgis was the genious of Sinatra! Listen to Fred Astaire sing the song in"The Sky's the limit". It was written by Mercer(music by Arlen), and Astaire sang it rather straight, just as it was written. Sinatra had Nelson Riddle arrange to suit his(FS's) interpretation. (cont.)
@GeneHJoseph Now go & listen to Lou Rawls version and you'll see that Rawls, himself, sang it to Sinatra's arrangement. Sure, he threw in a couple of extra words & held notes a little longer here and there, but it is definitely sung with Sinatra's phrasing/timing. When Frank said he paid "respect to the lyric" this is what he meant; that the lyric needed to fall perfectly within the timing of the music, for the most effect. It gives the music "feeling". Even Rawl is using Sinatra's "feeling".
@GeneHJoseph To clarify; Astaire was the first to sing the song. There have been other's who have sung it straight, the way it was written, but it was Sinatra who phrased it into what has become a classic. Some singers choose to sing it as it was written, but most others(including Lou Rawls) choose to sing it in the style of Sinatra. This is wut I meant when I originally wrote; "once Sinatra sings a song, he owns it - no one can match the genious of Sinatra's phrasing".
@wire4paladin The song was written in Germany in the '20s. It debuted on Broadway in 1933, so Astaire was hardly the first person to sing it. He may not even have been the hundredth.

HELLOOO! If you had read the 2 previous posts b4 my last one, you would've noticed I wasn't talking about "Mack The KNife", I was talking about; "One For My Baby", which WAS first sung by Fred Astaire, in the movie; "The Sky's The Limit"!
