  • thats an awesome bassai di

well done with that kata (: i love doing bassai di (:

  • Note the possible residues from other martial arts. I think it exhibits clearly that many different martial arts grow from one set of roots.

The start moves are virtually a Jui Jitsu, Judo and Aikido's Waki Gatame (Under armpit armlock). Also note the drawing of Sai (Fork pronged dagger type weapons) to be raised overhead followed by a double stabbing movement either side.

  • Nice very solid kata

  • HIPS?!?!?!?!

  • Looks ineffective and bad for joints.

  • Good**

  • Hey cool kata,

Has anyone got any hood sites/videos to learn it from??

  • nicely done

  • double stike without cresent kick the first time, gedan uke then uchi uke before the last three moves other than that awesome sharp all the way through, this has probably already been pointed out ?

  • nice.. watch your left foot though, it moves up-and-down when stepping. Keep it flat grounded. :o)

  • Keep up the good work!

  • yeah 1:16 no kick as you do double strike only for second and third double strike you do your kicks, the rest has been pointed out by others. other then that really strong kata. good work keep up the good training

  • Read below first...

    5. is at 1.31. Prepare as you move through to the target.

    6. at 1.36 - ANGLES (Even I stuff this up if not thinking.... It's Vital to get those angles right)

Pretty much all over the place - your thumbs are sticking out in Kake.

Mate - that's a fine example of Bassai-dai there - If your RM doesn't give you a 3rd Kyu for that effort, he needs his head read!

3rd kyu, as you know, things are getting SERIOUS... A BB is only a couple of years away.....

    Well done.

  • hey,

firstly i would like to thank you for the obvious time and effort you put into making these comments on my kata - and the comments themselves.

i agree with all these points and i have been working on many of them for a good while (vid is about a year old)an will continue to do so and the points you have made in addition.

so what region do you train/teach in?

  • Region 23 dude...

    Adelaide, Australia.

  • OK.

I'll preface this critique by saying I'm a GKR BB and instructor.

Here is what I saw that could do with some work.

    1. At 0.26 - Little hop - eliminate it by moving through to the target.

    2. At 1.01 - Grab the target, then RIP them off! that is one version of the bunkai that tends to sell this kata.

    3. 1.05 Arm and leg move together, should land together.

    4. at 1.11 Kick your hand and not slap your leg. Don't move your hand!

    5. Prepare Kake as you move through to the target.

  • the kata is really awesome but the part of the crazy kick before the double punch is wrong!! what i know is supposted to be just the double punch without the kick.. but your kata is really impressive!! im a student in united states, texas

  • Good luck getting your red belt, Im hoping to get mine for December. At the moment, Bassai dai is my favourite kata. im trying to learn Empi, and I keep practicing teh jump on the trampoline. I train in region with Sensie Dawna nd Sensei Gary. The regional 22, instructor is Sensei Sean Hewing.

  • thanks heaps for posting this i was worried about my grading and but i saw that i had the pattern right and i hope to get my red belt this weekend thanks again

  • did you just throw the extra kick it to make sure people were awake :@)

Yeah i train in region 27 with Sensei Daniel taylor and have my own class. Been teaching for 4 years now.Reached my shodan ho black belt in December so aiming for my shodan by christams. Where abouts do you train?

  • wasn't quite a consious decision!lol.

i train in liverpool with sensei bernie wright. sensei daniel is the man when it comes to kata so i'll defo have a word with my sensei about the timing of bassai.

am hoping to get my shodan-ho this xmas - good luck with your shodan man.

got any tips on any of my other kata?

how come you not got any vids of yourself on here?

  • I train with my mate and we quite often record our katas but never thought about putting them on youtube. No reason i guess just not for me. If i was to look at 1st kata i'd say slow the kata down. Chapters again!! I'd say that is the same for saifa. Let the stance finish b4 moving. Once you've hit one bad guy, pause b4 starting the next set of moves! Sit into your cat stance a little more. Seem high. i always say stick the bum out to emphasise the stance.

  • Dip and drive in your seunchin when you turn and double block. Drop right down then cork screw back up. You guys seem to do a lot more head turns than us. We only use them in 1st kata. Sensei Daniel really is thought of through the UK on his kata, can't fault him. His commitment is second to none. All the best with your training, is worth it when you go black!! How long you been training with us?

  • 3 yrs at end of june.

    do you compete???

  • I have before but not the best to be honest. never medaled!! My students have but not me. Defo something wrong there. Didn't enter in the NAS either but did see some great students train. take it you enter? We have to train for a min of 4 1/2 years for shodan ho but 5 years is the norm. Sensei Bob seems to like that long. maybe we should move up North ;@)

  • it depends on the individual mate-i have prev ma experience so i have been lucky enough to grade in the min time so far!

i dont no wat the average time is here-but there are students that have been training for 7-8yrs and not black yet and there wining tournements against dan grades so i think the standard is quite good up here!

i do enter yes, was national kata and kumite champ last year and got silver in the world cup for kumite in the instructors.

do you get to train much with sensei bob?

  • That's pretty impressive mate,well done!

I trained in Wado Ryu b4 coming across to GKR,my friend was black in kung Fu (not sure about styles in that) and still had to wait. Doesn't bother me cos its not the belt if that makes sence? There are people that have been training longer than me that are being looked at this weekend.Sensei Bob has took about 4 senior classes since i've been training so not that often!Sensei Gavin Samin took one just b4 christmas which was great. You going the World Cup?

  • i want to and i am trying to get the money together to get their!

i've trained with sensei gavin once and it was awesome! we worked on kick with him and his basics are fantastic! and saw him sparring with the r.m's - wow! his speed and flow is shocking!

what did you do with him?

  • We did alot of angle work, stepping in cat stance. We also did 'none' karate moves, sort of dping movements in a more real life situation. the idea was that you had to get low fast rather than worrying about your feet position etc. Was a bit different doing it that way! We trained at a seminar. Did a kids class then basics/combos etc. He was really impressive. As though he talks to you personally. very impressive. used to keep a track of lesson for ideas and lost the lot! wasn't happy!!

  • the 1st double strike has no crescent kick, then after that they strikes are followed by kicks. When you go off into back stance at the end make sure your arms move into preparation as soon as your feet move and watch your angles on the last two stances. No head turns after 1st kata so blend them in with the movement itself. Only small points mate, looks good. keep it up :@)

  • hey,

thanks for the comments, i'll take these on board and aim to improve those areas-

do you train yourself? if so where and who is your sensei? as for the timeing of the 1st back stance after the strike block we have been taught to do the timing this way - but if you are taught different i will speak to my sensei and get his thoughts on it!

thanks again- (oh and i was waiting for someone to pick up on the extra kick! lol)

  • Hi mate, its a good kata. My points would be

1/ After the salute at the beginning, there's no snap or speed involved in the movement when you bring your arm back and foot up....slow it down. Work on the chapters, After the block punch and then 3 back stances, you want to move into back stance straight after the 2nd uchi uke block. No pause! At the end when you do the double punch and crescent kick, you have added an extra crescent kick in on the 1st double strike sequence.
