Yes it was very sad to see Dan Wheldon pass away. Fans understand the risks &so do the drivers but in the heat of the moment the fans are excited because a wreck like that especially on a road course does not happen. They get just as excited as football fans do when they see a hard hit that knocks a player on their back. These players risk getting seriously hurt or killed too. If fans were worried sick about injuries every second, they wouldnt want to watch &they wouldnt be a fan

When you go to a race live, it's pretty easy to see who are actual fans and who are there just for the wrecks. People who cheer like that have no reason being at the race.

That was incredible. I have always questioned the saftey and reliabilty of the Armco Barriers at Watkins Glen. I was also baffled as to why they felt the need to only put the Safer Barriers around NASCAR 7 back in 2010. The Glen is known for its high speeds and I just can't comprehend why when its known for speed, saftey isn't a bigger issue.

imagine if ragan didnt hit the 00, he wouldve went head on into that wall. 00 is lucky he hit the wall at an angle, he was able to bounce off, if ragan didnt hit him, he wouldve had that hardest hit out of all of them. there is no telling what wouldve have happened to him. they are both lucky though

Definetly have to re-examine the guard rails along this stretch, I have video of last year's Nationwide race that Leffler did about the same thing, coming back across the track after hitting that one wall. It's one of the first videos in my "channel"

@StartNParkBlog I fully agree. As soon as the crash happened like that and seeing the replay, I said "Guaranteed that Watkins Glen won't have the walls shaped like that next year". I dont think safer barriers are needed but, they need to get rid of the outside wall (the one Ragan hit) from being pointed towards the track, and the little jut where Reutimann hit needs to be just a straight wall without a jut. Cars are definitely safe for sure but especially in racing, nothing is ever "too safe"
