Around 130 AD the arabs took control of this region for 1300 years. as for the money you spend on defense and foreign aid, try to look at it in terms investment (financial stimulus) rather than spending.. this money is paying the salaries of millions of people (who would otherwise not have these jobs). foreign aid must be used by the receiving country in spending on US products, which again is a feedback loop contributing to US jobs and strengthening US interests worldwide.
