"Two Guns-Balls Out" was another talented band in the 70's that was signed to Capricorn Records. Check out their music on youtube it is a sound of its own and considered a southern rock n roll classic!!!
RIP Frankie Toler and big prayers for Dangerous Dan currently battling Lou Gherigs disease. Those two guys were the backbone of this very troubled Allman era.
Why is it the Audiences today don't cheer and show their enthusiasm like that anymore ? Has the USA gotten that repressed? Music is freedom .Embrace it!
First of all, New Grass Revival wasn't a jam band. lmao But I agree about modern music ALL being just an extension of the "pop" genre. Nashvegas and Country music has sure went to hell in a handbasket along with good rock and R&B. The Allman Bros kick ass and always have... :)
I am 3 years old, hate Justin Bieber and have been listening to Muddy Waters and Son House since before I was even a twinkle in my daddy's eye. Matter of fact I was born in the back seat of a Greyhound Bus, rolling down highway 41, not listening to anything but classic rock. Lady GaGa sucks!!!
I hate Gainesville so much (I'm a vols fan, but that's besides the point), I will happily share southern rock with Florida ;), just giving y'all gator fans a hard time. I'm graduating from UT this year and I honestly feel like I'm the only person with a decent taste of music. Should have been born about 30 or so years earlier. Music today is awful; I envy my parent's generation that grew up with this.
To me this a late version; in that it's 82, I'm only 18, Duane's already gone about a decade......I'm now 47, that music still kills me, Gregg's still huntin', and, somewhere, Duane's pure decades-ever blues lives...
they used to play allman bros. on the radio in between alice cooper and black sabboth, so i got to hear them, even though this just isn't my kinda music. But. i came looking for "tuesday's gone with the wind" and i coulda swore it was by allman bros. band, But, i can't find it here. so if they didn't do it , who did?
@BillyBobThortonBich oh yaeh i didn't know! well then what did black oak arkansaw do? charley danials band... no. oak ridge boys... no. man i know i saw black oak arkansas in concert once... maybe they opened for leon russle or edger winter, or maybe even z-z-top, i just don't remember. it would have been in 1970 in denver co.
@m1kewithaone wow..black oak arkansas opened for Blue Oyster Cult and J Geils Band back in 1976 at the Lebanon Valley Speedway...somewhere in upstate NY.....I was there, it was great....but couldn't give you any details, lol.
WARREN IS GOD!!!! I have been following the boys for years, and the greatest member besides Duane would have to be "Mr. Hanes" long live SOUTHERN ROCK N ROLL
God I wish i was around when these guys were in their hayday.....saw them at the beacon thearter for their 40th anniversary....all I gotta say is God himself would be listening and smoking a joint.
@thecause456 they are actually better today than they were back then. i've been a fan from the beginning. today they are wicked tight. not that they weren't then but with age comes mastery
Dickey might not be as good as Duane, but who else alive can play slide like him in this? It just shows that if you learn from the best you will always be a cut above the others.
the rolling stones guitarist list of 2003 is a joke, duane allman at 2nd but dickey betts at 58. WHAT THE HELL. dickey should be much higher up the list, the only good thing they did was not include slash on the list.
@rohitmango Dude, you've been on Mars for how long? That's Dickey Betts. Every musician is unique and has their own style. He's damn good, since you can't tell. GFY.
@rohitmango WOW! Your ignorance is anything but bliss and only proves your stupidity in such statements. That guy is Dickey Betts and he is a badass, ever heard In memory of elizabeth reed? Yeah he wrote that, how about Jessica? He wrote that too. Blue Sky.... That too Les Brers in A minor Yeah he wrote that! Ughhhh you really need to read up, he was the other Lead player in the Allmans from the get go. There are tons of interviews where they ask about a solo to duane and he says Idk as dickey!
@willeng84 i accept i dint know all that man! havent been into allman brothers a lot. i do love blue sky and now have some respect for him to have written that, but i hope u agree with me when i say that he played this particular song horribly in this live version!
@rohitmango Is it as good as Duane....... Of course not he is and was literally the best guitar player. Not just slide, guitar in general Duane was a beast. He died at 24 so put that in your head, he was that good at just 24! PHENOM! Soooooooo knowing that Eric Clapton said Duane was the best guitar player he had ever seen, before that the only guy he said that about was Hendrix. With all that said even the band said Dickey's slide was remarkable, he learned pretty much over night. Duane 4 life!
@willeng84: And at the time of his death Duane had only been playing slide for a little less than four years--having picked it up in '68. He laid down an incredible legacy in such a short amount of time. All modern slide players build on the foundation that he established.
@aarfeld Sonny Landreth gives Duane credit for being a major influence in his evolution as a slide guitarist. He saw the Allmans play at Blackham Colosseum in Lafayette, La and the experience inspired him to amp up his playing. Check out Sonny's videos on Youtube. I think you'll enjoy.
@flymarvin Hey thats the great thing about music, if there wasnt music you didnt like there wouldnt be music you like. So you listen to Milie Vanilie and I listen to this and we all walk away happy.
This is an excellent version of Statesboro Blues. And yes Dickey is very talented indeed but he is not Duane and why should he? He is Dickey Betts. And he really knows how to play guitar, slide whatever. Simply some of the best.......
Dickey is very talented, but his slide playing doesn't compare to Duane's. Of course no one's slide playing can compare to Duane's. Duane is the greatest of all time.
Spent three years in Statesboro...and it was the three worst years of my life! I can relate to this song in more ways than one, two, or three. When I go by Statesboro on I-16, I don't even touch the brakes. It's a bad memory, and I just let it go, like a fart in the breeze. FU GSU!
even though I`m a Calif. boy, I gotta admit southern musicians added a new and improved dimension to the evolution of rock music. When I lived near Houston it seemed like we saw Johnny Winters, The Movin Sidewalk, 13th Floor Elevators and others every weekend at places like Love St. Light Show, Taylor Hall, Po` Boy Ernies (world famous for absolutely nothin) and no name places in Baytown, Galveston, Seabrook etc
I was at that concert! Bandshell at Flavet Field at UF. We were to the left as you look out from the stage. Back when you could still bring kegs to the concerts, and we did! This was a great show. They played there again about 7 years later too. They used to have great concerts there and before that at Lake Alice Field. Saw The Outlaws, The Fixx, Wendy O'Williams and The Plasmatics, Stevie Ray Vaughn among many many more. Halloween Balls were great there (& Plaza of the Americas before that).
@streettaco27 Yeah I'm 18 and been a fan for several years. For most of the time, I don't listen to anything recorded after 1989 (when the jam band "New Grass Revival" disbanded). When I was 15 I was listening to music from the 40s.

@HillbillyJ good music is timeless. totally agree. don't forget though... good music is still good music regardless. there's some good contemporary stuff out there too
@HillbillyJ I'm 57. The music died for me around 1989. I can't listen to it after that. Oh, I like some stuff by Stone Temple, but that's it. @arrwstia7 the south was defeated, your a dumbass. everybody down south are just a bunch of stupid inbreds. go suck on your first cousins cock you dickhead
They definately picked up that "southern rock" sound after Duane died...if you listen to atlanta pop festival, and concerts in washington square from 69/70 its night and day difference in how this song is played. they started as a blues jam band and when Dickey Betts took the wheel they had the southern sound
This was obviously not recorded in gainesville...It looks more like the Spirit of the Suwanee venue outside of Live Oak 50 miles north on the Suwanee river..
I met Dickey Betts a few years ago when I was about 11. Still is one of the nicest dudes I've met, plus he's amazing at playing guitar. Anyone listen to his band The Great Southern?
This is music!! Not that shit u hear today.. The Allman Brothers are living legends and they just get better with time. Ive probally seen them bout 25-30 times everytime they come up here to NYC and play the Beacon, what a show they put on!! This year was at the United Palace up town. Not exactly the Beacon but it'll do for now. I could see them anywhere and they would put on a great show and sound grerat. Keep up the GREAT work boys..see u next year
Gregg and the boys rockin' through another blues classic. Duane and Berry would be proud to see that , not only did the ABB continue after their passing, but do so well in terms of success. Such a huge mix of talents here...they each add a special flavor to this tune. Music to get ya' up and jumpin'...pass me a peach, will ya' ?
At 5:08 I believe the lyrics are supposed to be "she treats me like a king and she looks like a doggone queen," but it sure sounds to me like Gregg is singing that he "sometimes feels like a dancing queen." Is he pulling some kind of prank here, or am I just hearing things?
@AsrudGilberto its not like he is up himself, that is just his personality, watch his interviews, he is very calm and focused on his music. He is just a very calm person. Its just his personality, thats how he plays, he just isnt like the typical rock guitarist.
I didn't exactly expect him to play rock music like Jimi Hendrix or blues like Duane Allman but for Christs sake,to bill yourself as a blues player and then come out and play Indian Raga music Come on. If I wanna watch Indian Music,I'll go and watch some Indian people doing it
@AsrudGilberto He draws inspiration from everywhere. Honestly some of the best sounding slide stuff comes from India. Have you ever heard him play blues music??? He will knock the socks right off of you. He blends all sorts of music to create his own sound. Jimi Hendrix had a unique sounding blues thing going on, people called him creative. Derek Trucks does it and all of a sudden he committed a sin?
ah yea the guy can play as he proved at that show when he jammed at on of the late night shows there and ye I saw one of his interviews but hell I go there expecting some nice blues/rock and we get Indian Music.Actually nobody I talked to after like the guy on his headline show and ppl were even walking out. Sorry if I wasnt impressed.
@AsrudGilberto im not asking you to apologize, but he is a great blues player, he is just expanding the blues. The blues has been expanded many times this is just the newest stage in my opinion.
is that at Alpine Valley? Interesting recent story in Rolling Stone it about Greg ... saw these guys lots in late 80s, early 90; thought then it was better late than never, but they still rock on! Red Rocks is best, what?
my dad met greg a few years back in nashville and didn't even know who he was! There was a band playing and greg went up and played with them. When he finished they said that it was greg allman. Before greg went up he told my dad that it was the charlie daniels band! I should have been there!!!!!!!!!!
Don't know this but I suspect he plays a SG with a high setup to play the slide and the LP Gibson to play lead and some slide. It's easier to slide with the guitar set up high and rhythm and lead with it set up low. At least for me but I'm a novice at it all.
I was at a Dickey Betts concert in NYC in Central Park back in the 70's. The Allmans reunited at the concert and played for another hour . Nobody wanted to leave. AWESOME. It's a shame Dickey is again estranged from the group.
Saw these guys in Charlotte in early 80s... Charlie Daniels opened for them

This was obviously not recorded in gainesville...It looks more like the Spirit of the Suwanee venue outside of Live Oak 50 miles north on the Suwanee river..
bigtexascheeseburger 1 year ago
@bigtexascheeseburger Spirit of the Suwanee wasn't in business back then. Although I saw Neil Young up there. This is the Bandshell at UF.

I met Dickey Betts a few years ago when I was about 11. Still is one of the nicest dudes I've met, plus he's amazing at playing guitar. Anyone listen to his band The Great Southern?

How does Gaga get 227 million views in 7 months n this gets 110 thousand over two years?! This is so good! I could knock one out over this!

The reason Blind Willie wrote this is because he used to roam the streets of Statesboro, playing for coins. He played the streets of Atlanta too.

Gibson guitars and Marshall amps, what can I say! Dangerous Dan Toller has played second guitar for years but a great player in his own right.

CLASSIC!

Good but not as good as Duane.

You seriously never heard of Statesboro Prison?

At 5:08 I believe the lyrics are supposed to be "she treats me like a king and she looks like a doggone queen," but it sure sounds to me like Gregg is singing that he "sometimes feels like a dancing queen." Is he pulling some kind of prank here, or am I just hearing things?

I noticed the same thing.

@cobraman96 so what's the answer? is he clowning, or is he just so stoned he thinks he's joined Abba?

Yea I saw Derek Trucks play here awhile ago and that boy is so much up himself. He can play but he tends to lose his audience with the stuff he does.
AsrudGilberto 2 years ago
@AsrudGilberto its not like he is up himself, that is just his personality, watch his interviews, he is very calm and focused on his music. He is just a very calm person. Its just his personality, thats how he plays, he just isnt like the typical rock guitarist.
thatgibsonguy0001 2 years ago
I didn't exactly expect him to play rock music like Jimi Hendrix or blues like Duane Allman but for Christs sake,to bill yourself as a blues player and then come out and play Indian Raga music Come on. If I wanna watch Indian Music,I'll go and watch some Indian people doing it
AsrudGilberto 2 years ago
@AsrudGilberto He draws inspiration from everywhere. Honestly some of the best sounding slide stuff comes from India. Have you ever heard him play blues music??? He will knock the socks right off of you. He blends all sorts of music to create his own sound. Jimi Hendrix had a unique sounding blues thing going on, people called him creative. Derek Trucks does it and all of a sudden he committed a sin?
thatgibsonguy0001 2 years ago
ah yea the guy can play as he proved at that show when he jammed at on of the late night shows there and ye I saw one of his interviews but hell I go there expecting some nice blues/rock and we get Indian Music.Actually nobody I talked to after like the guy on his headline show and ppl were even walking out. Sorry if I wasnt impressed.
AsrudGilberto 2 years ago
@AsrudGilberto im not asking you to apologize, but he is a great blues player, he is just expanding the blues. The blues has been expanded many times this is just the newest stage in my opinion.
thatgibsonguy0001 2 years ago
Yep I agree :) He's expanded it right out of the blues genre and good luck to him for that but i for one won't be paying my money to go and see him
again and neither will a lot of other people in this town I reckon and by the way I'm not aplogising for any of my comments :)
AsrudGilberto 2 years ago
@AsrudGilberto ok, have fun trying to find other people that play the blues as well as he does. :)

my dad met greg a few years back in nashville and didn't even know who he was! There was a band playing and greg went up and played with them. When he finished they said that it was greg allman. Before greg went up he told my dad that it was the charlie daniels band! I should have been there!!!!!!!!!!
monkeys350 2 years ago
wow, in Dickeys hands you can really heard the difference between a LP and an SG
benjammin420420 2 years ago
Don't know this but I suspect he plays a SG with a high setup to play the slide and the LP Gibson to play lead and some slide. It's easier to slide with the guitar set up high and rhythm and lead with it set up low. At least for me but I'm a novice at it all.

I was at a Dickey Betts concert in NYC in Central Park back in the 70's. The Allmans reunited at the concert and played for another hour . Nobody wanted to leave. AWESOME. It's a shame Dickey is again estranged from the group.
