Interesting that this thing makes the GB look small. But 3 hours of batterie life and 300€ are two death sentences for any Game System, even the 3DS coudn't survive that^^
Did my mother really pay $300 for this, even $200, man I was spoiled back then; I love this system and glad I still have mine express and a Turbo-Duo.
what is up with some of the old portable devices like virtual boy, or sega game gear, or even this the turbo express having to use 6!!! double A batteries thats ridiculous!
I meant I found an old Turbo Express used with gunk no batteries and no back(cover for batteries) with no game. And it was put with old cell phones and I spotted it out of the corner of my eye. It was at the Foothill Flea Market. I might get it next Sunday. After I found out how to clean it of course.
if anyone's interested i still haven't put it for sale online yet, but i have a new Turbo Express w/original box (obviously opened and played 2-4 times), but taken care of really well. i am a huge fan of NEC, but i never use it... so it's just sitting there. i have the car charger, wall charger, over 30 games & case for it too.. willing to sell it all for around $400. IF YOU ARE SERIOUSLY INTERESTED (please no low balling) send me a private message here on my account. Happy Gaming! :D
Nice review. I have the PC Engine GT and it only plays Japanese games and I think it's exactly the same as the Turbo Express you demonstrated. Only differences I can see is the location of the name, "PC Engine GT" is written right above the control pad and I think the "NEC" is on the top left corner. It plays Street Fighter II Champion Edition really well btw (not rubbing it in). You get to play Bonk in English and I can't understand my games :(
@CaptainPoovabladoo Depends on the condition of the system. If there are dead pixels and lower than usual sound effects expect to pay about $125 seeing how it still plays well. If it's new and never touched you're looking at about $250-$300. The price is worth it since the screen is clearer than that of a Game Gear.
I noticed, you mentioned that this and the Sega Nomad were the only systems to be able to play their console counterparts on the go, which is awesome to say the least. I actually theres a new handheld coming out soon with this capability, the PSP2. Its supposed to be powerful enough to play most PS3 games on the go.
I just recently sold one in MINT , excellent condition w/ TV tuner for $149. Gamester where did you get all those wonderful toys?? LOL Awesome collection. I've been collecting since 1989 but had to sell inorder to buy new stuff...:(
Thanks to the GP2X WIZ, there is not logical reason to get one of these Turbo Expresses anymore.... unless you just want to collect it. The GP2X WIZ is the world's perfect handheld TG-16, at least in my opinion.
LOL Bonk means to shag or fuck in the UK. I think they had to change the name here if I remember. Although the PC Engine was never officially released here so maybe they didn't change the name.
I remember wanting one of these soooo bad when I was 10, But my parents wouldn't get me one because it was way to expensive. Just imagine, For the price this thing was back then you can get a Wii or PS3.... Hell the DSi XL cost less and has 2 screens (one that is touch) wifi and way better graphics! lol
@dude22072 Well, it also affected the TurboGrafx16 and the Sega Genesis as well, meaning that 3rd Party developers could only develop 1 or 2 games for either the Genesis and the TG16 per year , while the NES could have only 5 games from a 3rd party developer per year. Take Data East and Konami for example. They developed more games on the Nintendo systems than systems created by NEC and Sega.
You guys realize the only reason TurboExpress is so expensive and rare today is because of SEGA. They successfully cornered the color portable gaming market in pushing Atari Lynx and NEC TurboExpress out of the market in successfully marketing GAME GEAR. Also GAME GEAR plays Sega Master System games too with the Master Gear Converter accessory, so it's not just the Nomad and TurboExpress that can play their console counterparts.
Nice vide. I have been thinking of getting one but I am not sure if I should, what is your opinion of it. Also should I get the US one or save the money and get a PC engine GT, also would you happen to know were I could find a TurboExpress or PC engine GT for sale.
@ATARI800XLfan eBay's a great place. I have the PC Engine GT and it's really great it's not that different from Turbo Express. The games are really the only difference since GT will only play Japanese games and TE only U.S. notice gamester81 couldn't play SF II Champion Edition due to region lockout. Just make sure you ask if it has dead pixels and if the sound is working cause these were known for it. I recommend investing in an AC adapter since they will drain the batteries in 3 hrs. Good Luck
This thing was on the movie Enemy of the state. I dont know what they were thinking when they decided to show a MiniDV video put on a PCMCIA card which isnt memory anyways and putting it on this thing. I like this unit but they are defective and rare.
Great insightful review! I have a console but couldn't afford the hand held, but I've always thought that this product was way advanced, as it took years before Game Boy has color (and even then it was still not as good as this). Keep posting!
I wanted one of those when i was a kid, last time i saw those was it was used in a scene on Enemy of the State. I wasn't sure where you could get that. Great collection man. Yeah i had the a class mate that owend the Atari linx hand held, the graphics were pretty bad. The sega Nomad also takes 6 AA's and that only lasted for about 2 and hours long. The antana looks like a terrorist detonator. Good quality for portable t.v. man.
Wow, I remember my older sister used to have one of these! Used to play Slaughterhouse on this... good times. Wish we kept it, I had no idea these were rare.
another correction , the GameGear was also capable to play games from the MasterSystem on the go , you needed a connector-adapter though , since the carts wouldn't fit into the GameGear otherwise :D.
No change to the hardware though , only the connector :)
Haven't managed to get my hands on one of these little marvels , but I'll keep on trying :]
That TV tuner is neat. I've got one, but my TurboExpress is broken. Too bad it will only pick up low-power stations now (which still broadcast in analog.)
Yeah NOMAD could do it, but Turbo Express was better quality. NOMAD had a huge cart sticking out and shaking it a tiny bit would make the game freeze up.
I borrowed this system and the TV tuner. The image quality was very sharp for the TV and games, you could actually read text on the screen coming from the TV tuner.
I had a regular TG16 but like a dummy I sold it. I had Devils Crush Pinball and Galaga 90 which was Galaga 88 from the arcade but I guess since they relased it in 1990 they renamed it Galaga 90. I played and sounded just like Galaga 88.
I also had the Stereo A/V expansion module that allowed the use of standard RCA A/V cables.
Great video! I got one of these when they first came out in 1990. Paid over $500 for the system and TV tuner. Loved being able to play all my TG-16 games on it and not having to go out and buy new games. Greatest portable system of its time. Only complaint I had with it was battery life. If you didn't buy the A/C adapter, you were going through hundreds of AA batteries lol.
@17R3W Actually the shows back then were great. I used to watch Dragonball and DragonBall Z long before the U.S. showed it, and uncensored Japanese version in Spanish language. Ranma1/2 was also on the air, nowadays they have reality shows:P but I watch an hour and a half of the SImpsons everyday:D Some channels show action movies from the 80s and 90s and marathons of kickass movies, really rare Jackie Chan movies like "Wheels on Meals" and "Drunken Master".
Sounds pretty cool. Yeah, Canadian TV is pretty much the same as American TV, same shows at the same time, so you really couldn't tell the difference between the two.
Maybe commanderoates should go to school. To learn how to spell. Good video. Very informative. I have a TG-16 but will probably never be in the market for an Express. Alot of the games are just too hard to see on the screen. Glad you have one to show me. Go Cards!!!!
LOL I like how you picked up I'm a Cards fan! Yah you're right the screen is small to play some of the games. I love the TG-16 though, it's a very underrated system.
Yeah, the reason for the low sound is the capacitors inside which go bad. If you replace them then your TG16 will make you def with the volume level. I replaced the caps in mine and made a few vids of the process if you have a chance, check them out. Also, you can use the tv tuner as a video imput from a dvd player or game system and use the screen as like a mini tv, put up a couple of those vids as well if you get the chance. Good vids man
Holly crap I never realized how expensive that was back in the day! Granted the quality of its screen beats the crap out of anything else from the time. I think it was active TFT... didn't get blurry when things moved like the Game Gear. So crispy too!
Nice!! Nothing beats the idea of playing home console games on the move! For me, the only downside is the tiny screen. The built-in speaker is actually pretty powerful and bassy.
i just got this today with the tv tuner.....ill never get to see it work waaaaahhh!!!!!!

Another correction: The TG16 can display it's entire 512 palette at once.

the sound was bad because they used cheap capacitors and LCD technology was just intruduced back then in colour so it was new technology.

Just won one of these on ebay recently. Can't wait for it to arrive.

Wow, you're pretty lucky.

The Tv tuner is kool.

Nice!! Nothing beats the idea of playing home console games on the move! For me, the only downside is the tiny screen. The built-in speaker is actually pretty powerful and bassy.
