He has more assists than anyone has total points. I read other comments that say, Wayne would never put up the points in today's game. Maybe? Maybe not? The "old" NHL used to be a very brutal. Both players and goalies didn't wear helmets. Seeing a goaltender take a rubber puck to the head was the norm. Players even played with fractured bones and concussions. It's true, the game has evolved. The problem with today's NHL is there are no real standouts. During the 80's and 90's the NHL was at it's best (so many great players). I feel sorry for younger fans, you guys missed out on so many great moments. The NHL will never be like that again.
If Gretzky is just an average player by today's standards? What does that say about the rest of the NHL during that same time period? Only the best of the best become professional players. Gretzky was truly the most amazing hockey player (and Lemieux) I have ever seen. So unless you lived through the 70's, 80's, 90's, you really have no idea what you are talking about. I remember (79-80) when people said Gretzky would never make it in the NHL. Turned out they were wrong...

It is true that the athlete now put ALOT of effort in training themselves physically and if Gretzky at his prime was to compete with the players of today, he would have a bit of trouble. It was definitely a different game back then. That doesnt take anything away from his skill or what he achieved. But back then the goalies were pretty bad and players werent as aggressive
@ClevoMaiden Fair enough but you have to remember that Gretzky put up 163 points in the 1991 season and was still putting up close to 100 points each year in the late 90's at the tail end of his career. By 1991 players such as Jagr (who still putting up great numbers in the league today), Lemieux, Modano, Yzerman, Recchi, Gilmour etc...were all playing at a high level.

Yes, the game was more wide open back then, but one still can't overlook the fact of how widely Gretzky outdistanced the opposition. Nobody in the history of the NHL ever came close to outpointing the rest by 30-40% for 5 straight years. To put it in perspective it would be like last year's scoring champ Sedin at 104 points, being 31 or 41 points up for 5 straight years on St.Louis who would have had 63-73 instead of 99. If all the goalies sucked every Oiler/NHL player should have rivalled #99.
Mario Lemiux produced points at the same level Gretzky did. Hell if you look at the top 10 points all time in the NHL most of them played in this era. Gretzky was just simply better than all of them however and would put up Crosby like numbers today.

His slickness, vision and playmaking were a treat to watch and he came through big internationally in the Canada Cups. Also had an underrated ability to dodge hits. Had he not left Edmonton his stats would have been even more incredible.

The Great One was awesome. I was more of a Super Mario fan but Gretzky is in a class of his own. It was definitely a different game back then. That doesnt take anything away from his skill or what he achieved. But back then the goalies were pretty bad and players werent as aggressive

@ClevoMaiden Fair enough but you have to remember that Gretzky put up 163 points in the 1991 season and was still putting up close to 100 points each year in the late 90's at the tail end of his career. By 1991 players such as Jagr (who still putting up great numbers in the league today), Lemieux, Modano, Yzerman, Recchi, Gilmour etc...were all playing at a high level.

If you moved Gretzky's prime playing days to the current game, he'd still annihilate fools. Bad goalies/better goalies or faster/newer game... It doesn't even matter. He wasn't just a great player, he was a leader for his team and brought hockey to a different level in America. Before Gretzky, no one cared for hockey in California. @UnsnappedApple Datsyuk has only barely gotten over 30 goals in two or three seasons. Gretsky had a 90 goal season, two 80 goal seasons, four 70 goal seasons, and numerous 50 and 60 goal seasons. Yeah, Datsyuk is just as good, right.

Yes, the game was more wide open back then, but one still can't overlook the fact of how widely Gretzky outdistanced the opposition. Nobody in the history of the NHL ever came close to outpointing the rest by 30-40% for 5 straight years. To put it in perspective it would be like last year's scoring champ Sedin at 104 points, being 31 or 41 points up for 5 straight years on St.Louis who would have had 63-73 instead of 99. If all the goalies sucked every Oiler/NHL player should have rivalled #99.

Mario Lemiux produced points at the same level Gretzky did. Hell if you look at the top 10 points all time in the NHL most of them played in this era. Gretzky was just simply better than all of them however and would put up Crosby like numbers today.

@HOCIPLAYER it's not that the goalies were bad (because that's so so so wrong), it's that the game wasn't as defensive as it is today. if gretzky were to play in the nhl today there's no way he would reach 200 points; i doubt he would reach 150. gretzky was an AMAZING player, but he played in a different era. i bet if crosby and/or ovechkin played in the 1980's they'd be scoring 150-200 points easily.

Lets take Crosby and put him back in the Great one's days and see how he could do...Im sure he'd get a concussion and be out forever. Back then a 2 hand wasn't uncommon, and cheap dirty plays happened all the time. Wayne was the man, no one will ever be better.

Did you know that Gretzky outpointed the runner-up by over 70 points 3 straight years from 84' - 86' and by over 60 points in 82' and 83'! For 5 straight years he was 30 -40% ahead of everyone else. His slickness, vision and playmaking were a treat to watch and he came through big internationally in the Canada Cups. Also had an underrated ability to dodge hits. Had he not left Edmonton his stats would have been even more incredible.

The Great One was awesome. I was more of a Super Mario fan but Gretzky is in a class of his own. First in goals, first in assists, first in pts per game, led the league in pts 11 times and 8 times in a row, how is Gretzky not the greatest. He also was the most innovative and had the best anticipation of any player.

Gretzky is an amazing player but you gotta think about the difference in skill level now days. The players are faster stronger bigger and alot more agile then them. he couldnt keep up with the players in todays NHL. yup and my cousin plays pro hockey so yahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i think i have you guys beat in knowledge of hockey
