My grandmother used to have a black and white children's book about Little Black Sambo that she used to read to me all the time. I'm white. That book used to be my favourite because my favourite meal that gram used to cook for me were pancakes. She used to affectionately call me little black Sambo with absolute no hint of prejudice whatsoever.
I know of the Slang Terms SAMBO, they have nothing to do with the book, just as the Japanese word, Sambo has nothing to do with Black Children (or Indian for that matter).
Go to preschool, they have some nice maps and books with pictures from which you may be able to glean accurate information . As a projedct why don't you tell me what part of Africa Sambo's BENGAL (as in Bengali State, INDIA) can be found. Oh, Tigers are not indigenous to Africa? Interesting, NO?Oh, they come from S Asia. Hmm
So next time that you feel like saying something you know NOTHING about, there are probably a few web sites that might convince you. Try Google, Wikipedia, and look up Helen Bannerman. BTW, the reason that she stayed in India for so many years is that her husband was the top British Medical Officer in Madras for the British Colonial Government back in the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
i remember having this read to me at school in 1975 when i was 7. its amazing how some stories stick with you..i think it must have been the tigers turning into butter..i think if the book had been given a different name, maybe it would still be around today.
@ihopveggan - tell me something I don't know. I've lived with this crap for 57 yrs, and it's not getting better, only being better masked. just look at how now we have the most disrespected president in history, and I'm not talking about on "saturday night live" or some comedy skit. I'm talking prime time news. This country, though I love it, should be ashamed. Not racial? ...Please.
To really understand the negative impact of this book.......you have to be black. Sorry, just telling it like it is. Racism only going to hit home if you've experienced it, lived it, fought it, and have overcome it.
I had this book as a child and loved it BECAUSE Sambo out-smarted the tigers and ate them on his pancakes...I never read it as a racist story and was shocked when someone told it was.
this was in africa the orginal book was in africa. go to college and take a history course and maybe ull learn something. the author changed and revised to india but the word samboo if u look it up means black. on wikipedia Sambo is a racial term for a person with mixed African and Native American heritage

People are idiots!! There is NOTHING racist about this book!! It's not even about a black boy - it's an innocent little story about a little Indian boy who cleverly outsmarts the tigers who prey on him, steal his clothes and ends with him having a lovely big plate of pancakes made with the butter of the melted tigers.

I used to have this book, too, when I was a kid. I never thought of it as being racist then, just a fun story about how Sambo is picked on by the tigers but the tigers get what's coming to them, eventually, due to their greed. I can see, now, how it might have been done with a little more sensitivity toward blacks, but the basic story is really pretty good and I think does no harm.

His friend is a tiger, there are no tigers in AFRICA except maybe in zoos. He lives in a jungle.Djungel is an Indian word, there are no
Jungles in Africa. Helen Bannerman's Story,"Little Black Sambo" clearly takes place in India. There's also Little Black Quasha, Quibba, and Mingo.

As a very young boy, I attended a Catholic school where there had been only 2 black families in attendance, one being ours. One day we had story time, and the nun said, "Today we're going to read a story that should be very special to ....(me). It's the story of ' Litte Black Sambo!'" I have to say I would love to own that book. YES the characters name is racIst but so what, it's history! its how people thought at the time with no apology and often with no real malice. I'm half black and collect antiques including gollywogs and black americana. White people stop apologising and black people stop complaining, accept your history and move on. These issues are over analysed.
Sambo is derived from "Shamboo" one of the earthly names of Lord Shiva . Coincidentally, it was also a sound alike for mulatto children
Sambo had a tiger, which do not exist in Africa. If so called African America would actually take the time to learn about Africa, they would know this.

It's a story. I was raised with people of all races and nationalities, and I never found this book to be racist. There really are people that dark in India. People are just reading into it far too much.
@CommentorIbiza OH THANK GOD. Someone with brain cells to rub together! I'm sick of how many times I have to tell thick-skulled people he's Indian, not African.
I don't agee with you, GFantastic, that it is racist. It is from a different time, written by a British Indian Colonial white woman and demonstrates ingenuity by the title hero, and industrious and loving parents. Butter, how lovely. If we can destigmatize the gollywog illustrations, and the lable "black" then why not share with your niece? With the right introduction, she'd love it. Children don't know racism unless they are taught.
I wonder if the illustrations, names, and only a few words were changed, but nothing taken out of the story, I think it would be a lovely story to put on shelves in bookstores. My mother has a copy of this book and I've always loved the story.
It's racist because a lot of white people in England stole the name of Sambo and started using it as an insult to West Indies immigrants. They were so stupid they didn't realize that 'black' Sambo wasn't black at all but an Indian. Tigers aren't native to any country where black Africans live, only India. That should be the obvious giveaway that Sambo is not a black African.
No, I am not and I am not offended by it. I am just tired of people finding racism where it isn't. the original Golliwog wasn't racist either until Enid Blighton made golliwogs evil and had them doing things like jacking Noddys car. The original Golliwog was a heroic character in spite of his appearance. I see nothing wrong with creating a fantasy character that just happens to have black skin. He was intended to be a dark skinned elf or gnome and nothing more.
@gamewizard I agree with you I see no hate in this story, but I do see so much hate in a lot of these comments. This is what I find sicking. People like commentoribiza and the nazi loving slime of the world they are. These are the true racists and not some one who reads this book.
It's a great story. First, it's not about African blacks despite what ideas have been handed down. How many tigers do you know of in Africa? Tigers are in the near east. Who was the author? A Scot named Helen Bannerman who lived in India. During British occupation the Brits called Indians black because their dark skin. Probably because during Pangaea India was next to Africa. Little Black Sambo is the hero by using his intelligence and quick thinking. Thanx for reading it. It's a great story.

I'm 67 and have 12 grandchilding who I've told the story of Sambo many times. I think any black person should be proud. Also, Uncle Remus... fantastic! One could disect any story about any culture. Lighten up!
I grew up in New Zealand and of Sri Lankan origin. As a kid I was read it during my pre-school years. It was after this that I was teased and called little black Sambo by other children. Its quite ironic as back in the 70's the Maori kids and as well as adults were using it quite often as a racial slur even though they were of the same color. Although it brings back unpleasant memories it is actually a pretty good story and a pity it ended up the way it is.
I loved the story. As a child I was nor aware of any racial implications because the Sambo that was pictured in my childhood anthology looked very Indian. What amused me the most was the picture of the tiger with the shoes on his ears. I have read or told the story to my class calling all the characters by different names. There is also a book called Suni and the Tigers which maintains the original delight of the story. I bought it last year, but seem to have misplaced it. grrr...
Quite a story my friend. The story of the book looks to be interesting too bad that artwork and title were racist. I guess the book could have been done in another way.
Get over it, folks. It exists.

There is also a book called Suni and the Tigers which maintains the original delight of the story. I bought it last year, but seem to have misplaced it. grrr...

Quite a story my friend. The story of the book looks to be interesting too bad that artwork and title were racist. I guess the book could have been done in another way.
