I've never seen a super 8mm film like this before.... usually you get just a couple of people walking around outside with music because that's what's easy. But this has got great audio recording & effects, a soundtrack, indoor lighting, and an actual story, SIMPLY AMAZING!!! A real inspiration! But what was the asa of that film? I wonder why it picked up so much ambient light- I usually have to use a bunch of floodlights and no matter what I do it always seems washed out.
Thanks so much, ChesneyDigital. In fact, at the time we made this, it was quite a chore to bring all the elements you mention into the project. ( click on "more info." ) The film was Kodachrome 40 ( 25 outdoors with filter ). I only wish you could see this film as it actually looks, projected. ( I still may do an HD transfer. ) What you see here is a VHS tape ( far inferior to the camera original ).
@ChesneyDigital Good news! : I am proud to announce that "Nuclear Nightmares" has been chosen as one of eight winners of Pro 8 mm's "My Super-8 Movie Contest!" The full-length film ( AKA "Dead Beat" ) will be re-mastered to HD! Thanks for your encouragement!
I'm guessing that you're related to the DP of this film. Also very lucky to work with the Nizo 6080. lol Sux that they don't make 200 ft Super 8 film. hehe well this film is an amazing result for a medium that has often overlooked as a serious filmmaking medium. :) good job mate.
Thanks dschaafnz. Yes, the DP is my brother, a professional "still man." I now own a collection of the best Super-8 cameras ever made; and I can tell you: the Nizo 6080 is the best of the lot! The 200ft. cartridge was used for several extended double exposures. Thanks again for your interest and kind words.
BTW, for an independent film, I felt that the acting was pretty good and the imagery was better than most movies- you've got talent. Are you still making movies?
Thanks so much, skonicki28. Actually, there is a long story behind this film, involving getting all the equipment and small crew together and then losing my lead actor to a back injury. I then jumped in and played it myself -- for better or worse. Check out "Think About It" Vinny St. Marten.
You know, I actually liked this short film. Although I do like the convenience of shooting in hd now, I still feel that film looks superior. Anyway, good job and don't get discouraged by some of the negative remarks.
OK, sublime814, you hated it. That's fine. But I think one thing must be clarified: All Super-8 film has a certain amount of problems with registration ( jitter ). While the Nizo 6080 camera I used had excellent registration for Super-8, there was a problem every time a tape splice went through the gate of the telecine. So just before every cut, the image rises and then falls. Much of this film was shot on sticks ( tripod ). But I think this problem is what you are referring to.
Zephryn: you look fantastic, but Josef looks very different than the last time we produced music together: It's Jerry B (remember: from the JZ Rock days!) Get in touch, ok?
Very well done. Was impressed with the interior lighting..especially the opening kitchen scene..not an easy thing to do with K-40Have you considered a more recent telecine?
Thanks x05e. Working with a 40 ISO film stock was not what my D.P, a professional still photographer, was accustomed to. But, I agree, he did a great job. Yes, I am considering having the film telecined again.
@x05e Good news: I am proud to announce that "Nuclear Nightmares" has been chosen as one of eight winners of Pro 8 mm's "My Super-8 Movie Contest!" The full-length film ( AKA "Dead Beat" ) will be re-mastered to HD! Thanks for your encouragement!
I think I shot about 4,500 ft of sound K-40 Super-8 film @ 24fps. Not including the equipment, I seem to remember the budget being around $3,000. The full length film is 45min. long-about a 5/1 shooting ratio. Remember: this was 1990.
$3,000 for a full-length film, a Super-8 one that looks like a theatrical 35mm at that, in 1990 is totally awesome. You obviously have alot of that Sam Arkoff blood running through your veins (love ya always, Sam!) Okay, so $3,000 then would probably translate into $10,000 now, but still for a full-length that is a bargain. What are you doing now, are you still working with Super-8
Even more importantly, did you make your money back after you released it, who picked it up and, without revealing the info if you don't want to, did you both recoup expenses and make a profit for yourself. In my old age, I am now starting to ask the "financial" question, not that I don't put all my chips in the creative aspect and the goal of getting the film completed, just that I have been involved with too many projects that did not have a happy ending, if you catch my drift, financially.
Sorry to say I did not feel at the time that the truncated version of the original screenplay I ended up making was worth promoting. So I showed it around at some film clubs and passed some VHS copies around to some friends. Needless to say, I did not recoup any of my expenses.
Still making films for fun and ( very little ) profit. I try to make sure that there is at least some Super-8 and/or 16 mm footage in all my projects.
Good ears, chiangui24! Correct composer; but incorrect movie/TV source. Actually, the Herrmann piece at the beginning is from "Psycho." The Herrmann piece during the "Sardine Lunch" scene is from "Cape Fear."
Hehe excuse me? This is so stupid! YOU RIPPED THE MUSIC OFF THE END OF 2001: A Space Odyssey and put it on your measley film! Hm....professional or pirate! I think PIRATE!
Good ears, KeyFilmation. In fact, though, there is no original music in the entire sound track of 2001: A Space Odyssey. ( I guess you didn't know that. ) I think you'll find the piece to which you refer is called "Atmospheres" by Gyorgy Ligeti. The credits of the original full length version of my AMATEUR film ( every shot of which emanated from MY OWN Super-8 camera, not a collection of "found footage" ) give note of that fact.
Well I didn't say that the movie itself was stupid, rather, I think it's pretty good. Thanks for telling me that the music wasn't original to the score of 2001... I hadn't known. Sorry for being so outrageous...
