  • fantastic, one the most professional Super 8 features thats probably out there. i'd love to see a dvd distributor like Synapse or Blue Underground give it the royal treatment. Anchor Bay released The Dead Next Door which was shot on super 8 and is not as well made as this film, so it can happen.

  • @deplopcinema Hey, thank you very much, deplopcinema. That's very heartening. At present, I am trying to re-master the film ( both picture and sound ). I hope to upload the entire film when it's finished.

  • What a sexy lady, the camera loves her face!!DO hd transfer and send to the IFC channel and put into festivals.one of the best i have seen.I disagree on cameras though,BEAULIEU #1-NO CONTEST BUT nizo is right there.BEAULIEU,CANON 1014,1018,NIZO 801,6080.I have 2 beaulieu 4008 for sale.-Lonzo

  • @thelonz69 Thank you so much, thelonz69. I agree that the Beaulieu can give you the best images of all Super-8 cams ( I have a 7008S and it's great ). I also have a C-1014XL-S and an N-801 Macro. They are all great. I can't really explain it: The Nizo 6080 is still my best friend!

  • This should be seen. Sad that it got the reception it did. Now that is more beleivable of a concept you should enter it in a couple of festivals. There's this festival I'm working towards on BIG STAR tv.

  • @afterskoolspecialz Thank you so much, afterskoolspecialz!

  • Neil, Good to see your film on screen! This was quite a bit of dedicated work. We put in some hours & I love remembering the details (and the apartment with the view of NYC). Keep creating! Your "leading lady," Zephryn

  • @zephrynconte Zephryn, I'm so glad you enjoy seeing this clip from "Nuclear Nightmares" AKA "Deat Beat" on YouTube. You really were quite perfect in the role! Thanks for all your help back then! ( Hopefully, I can get a better quality upload soon. This one has really degraded for some reason, especially toward the end. )

  • I've never seen a super 8mm film like this before.... usually you get just a couple of people walking around outside with music because that's what's easy. But this has got great audio recording & effects, a soundtrack, indoor lighting, and an actual story, SIMPLY AMAZING!!! A real inspiration! But what was the asa of that film? I wonder why it picked up so much ambient light- I usually have to use a bunch of floodlights and no matter what I do it always seems washed out.

  • Thanks so much, ChesneyDigital. In fact, at the time we made this, it was quite a chore to bring all the elements you mention into the project. ( click on "more info." ) The film was Kodachrome 40 ( 25 outdoors with filter ). I only wish you could see this film as it actually looks, projected. ( I still may do an HD transfer. ) What you see here is a VHS tape ( far inferior to the camera original ).

  • Indeed, it was a sad day when Kodak discontinued Kodachrome 40 in Super-8. When shot, and processed, properly, it was an amazing stock!

  • wow!

I'm guessing that you're related to the DP of this film. Also very lucky to work with the Nizo 6080. lol Sux that they don't make 200 ft Super 8 film. hehe well this film is an amazing result for a medium that has often overlooked as a serious filmmaking medium. :) good job mate.

  • Thanks dschaafnz. Yes, the DP is my brother, a professional "still man." I now own a collection of the best Super-8 cameras ever made; and I can tell you: the Nizo 6080 is the best of the lot! The 200ft. cartridge was used for several extended double exposures. Thanks again for your interest and kind words.

  • Now THAT's creativity. Superb use of Super8, and genuinely great scripting/acting. "Wanna buy a laserdisc?" ... just too clever!

This is something I've always wanted to do.

  • BTW, for an independent film, I felt that the acting was pretty good and the imagery was better than most movies- you've got talent. Are you still making movies?

  • Thanks so much, skonicki28. Actually, there is a long story behind this film, involving getting all the equipment and small crew together and then losing my lead actor to a back injury. I then jumped in and played it myself -- for better or worse. Check out "Think About It" Vinny St. Marten.

  • You know, I actually liked this short film. Although I do like the convenience of shooting in hd now, I still feel that film looks superior. Anyway, good job and don't get discouraged by some of the negative remarks.

  • Didn't they sell tri-pods in the 80's? Horrible camera work. Nice hair cut Neil Schon. Garbage.

  • OK, sublime814, you hated it. That's fine. But I think one thing must be clarified: All Super-8 film has a certain amount of problems with registration ( jitter ). While the Nizo 6080 camera I used had excellent registration for Super-8, there was a problem every time a tape splice went through the gate of the telecine. So just before every cut, the image rises and then falls. Much of this film was shot on sticks ( tripod ). But I think this problem is what you are referring to.

  • @sublime814 Thanks for your constructive critisism!. The full length version of "Nuclear Nightmares" is now available on YouTube in HD entitled

  • Very well done. Was impressed with the interior lighting..especially the opening kitchen scene..not an easy thing to do with K-40Have you considered a more recent telecine?

  • Thanks x05e. Working with a 40 ISO film stock was not what my D.P, a professional still photographer, was accustomed to. But, I agree, he did a great job. Yes, I am considering having the film telecined again.

  • How much did the entire, great film cost, what was your budget?

  • I think I shot about 4,500 ft of sound K-40 Super-8 film @ 24fps. Not including the equipment, I seem to remember the budget being around $3,000. The full length film is 45min. long-about a 5/1 shooting ratio. Remember: this was 1990.

  • $3,000 for a full-length film, a Super-8 one that looks like a theatrical 35mm at that, in 1990 is totally awesome. You obviously have alot of that Sam Arkoff blood running through your veins (love ya always, Sam!) Okay, so $3,000 then would probably translate into $10,000 now, but still for a full-length that is a bargain. What are you doing now, are you still working with Super-8

  • Even more importantly, did you make your money back after you released it, who picked it up and, without revealing the info if you don't want to, did you both recoup expenses and make a profit for yourself. In my old age, I am now starting to ask the "financial" question, not that I don't put all my chips in the creative aspect and the goal of getting the film completed, just that I have been involved with too many projects that did not have a happy ending, if you catch my drift, financially.

  • Sorry to say I did not feel at the time that the truncated version of the original screenplay I ended up making was worth promoting. So I showed it around at some film clubs and passed some VHS copies around to some friends. Needless to say, I did not recoup any of my expenses.

  • Still making films for fun and ( very little ) profit. I try to make sure that there is at least some Super-8 and/or 16 mm footage in all my projects.

  • The music at the beginning anyway

  • Good ears, chiangui24! Correct composer; but incorrect movie/TV source. Actually, the Herrmann piece at the beginning is from "Psycho." The Herrmann piece during the "Sardine Lunch" scene is from "Cape Fear."

  • No, The music is by Bernard Herrmann. Used in The Twilight Zone

  • VHS transfer?

  • Hehe excuse me? This is so stupid! YOU RIPPED THE MUSIC OFF THE END OF 2001: A Space Odyssey and put it on your measley film! Hm....professional or pirate! I think PIRATE!

  • Good ears, KeyFilmation. In fact, though, there is no original music in the entire sound track of 2001: A Space Odyssey. ( I guess you didn't know that. ) I think you'll find the piece to which you refer is called "Atmospheres" by Gyorgy Ligeti. The credits of the original full length version of my AMATEUR film ( every shot of which emanated from MY OWN Super-8 camera, not a collection of "found footage" ) give note of that fact.

  • Well I didn't say that the movie itself was stupid, rather, I think it's pretty good. Thanks for telling me that the music wasn't original to the score of 2001... I hadn't known. Sorry for being so outrageous...

  • Before I even comment on the content, may I just say that for Super8 this feels like a vhs of a 35mm movie.

  • I cannot agree with you more. Like I have told both wannabe filmmakers and musicians: one does not have to use the most expensive equipment or instruments in order to get a professional looking or sounding end product.

Look at how the filmmakers were able to achieve the look and feel of a professional film at a fraction of the cost. A must-see film for all low budget filmmakers like me. This should be mandatory viewing for all the film students here in L.A. wasting tons of mom and dad's money.

  • Thanks KojiRecords. The look and feel are attributable to many things, not the least of which are my DP and the incredible, no longer available, Super-8 Kodachrome 40 film stock. Indeed, it was a sad day when Kodak decided to end producing this stock in Super-8.

  • Thanks AmazingShoestring. You make me want to rent a deck so I can upload the BetaSP dub.
