Asian horror films have a way of creating mood and atmosphere, something American horror films tend to lack nowadays. Films like "Tale of Two Sisters" or any of the school triology movies have a sense of impending darkness that lingers, hangs like a shadow.

While "Tale of Two Sisters" wasn't entirely scary, it did provide a great map for building mood. There's something about Asian horror that makes you look over your shoulder. "Recycle" did that for me with some genuine creepy moments.

Everything has a meaning- the long hair means anger, the white clothes are the clothes that dead people wear in funeral, the water means they have power abt almost anything and they can use it as they want. And about tragedy...in Ju On they say it "when someone dies feeling huge anger or sadness, a new Grudge is born"

@BiohazardBunney and that's the scary part because you are afraid of it and yet you can't help but watch on, you can't help but want to find out more and get drawn in. Plus they usually circle around dark themes which portray the dark side of people or reflect the darkness of modern society, and that's why it's not a surface kind of shock but rather a horror that goes deeper into the soul... admittedly too much gets repetitive as you've said but it's not ultra violence, it's deeper than that.

American urban legends and stories are filled with lunatics out for blood, it's our culture, so we understand it when we see it a movie, it's a classic scare.
