Hi Mary, How are you doing today? I was 16 years old since learn with asl from Wisconsin School For The deaf. I likes your hand sign language easy. I can understand you. If you improve skill sign language explain clear!!
If you wanna call me vp 906 214 4634 My name is Mark Ritchie
I learned ASL in college when i was 13-16 and I moved here to Thailand where I learned TSL.....the same thing about both is you NEED facial expression. I sign with my friends every day and it can be difficult if you dont show expression or if you sign with many pauses.
Chewing gum on the street running into a deaf person is no biggie....but it u want to become an interpreter it is an absolute NO....also LOOOOONG fingernails or an abundant amount of makeup. It just goes with the job.
It's hard to believe that you are working on ASL level 5-6. In College this would be considered as an ASL 1 level assignment. Your signs are clear and I understood you fine, but you need more facial expressions and you would need to spit out the gum because it would distract a Deaf person tremendously. Keep working at it. It only gets harder, but it's a lot of fun once you get it down. Good Luck
Are you using the gum to cut down on English dependence? I know that for me, since I am a native English user, even the slightest mouthing while signing tends to pull me into English-style grammar. Even if you are, you should only use the gum while practicing, 'cause I agree that the incessant chewing is distracting. :)
I liked the vid honestly. And maybe its just me but I didnt notice the gum at all until I read all the comments. If the gum destracts you so much, I would hate to put any of you in a situation where there is alot more than the chewing of gum. But anyway, the only issue I had was maybe your lvl of confidence. Know that you sign well and it will show through to people. =)
The chewing gum is very annoying. I'm an ASL teacher with a degree from GallaudetU niversity. I have to say that I wouldn't put you as and ASL 5 student. You would be placed in my ASL 2 class (intermediate) due to you having too many pauses and your sentences are too simple for an advance class. Socialize more with Deaf so you can improve on your production.
It's not the fact that she's chewing gum while signing, it's that she's chewing gum in a seemingly distracting manner. Even though I could understand your signing, it doesn't reflect well to me that you chew gum like a four year old girl.
Very clear, great job. You looked kind of bored though :]
The gum wasn't as bad as people kept saying it was. It was only a minor distraction but I was still able to watch your signs, lol. Keep it up sweetheart :]
Hi! Is there a reason why you don't mouth words while signing? Do you think deaf people can't speak?
Deaf people tend to mouth words or talk while signing so it's easier to understand each other. Even if we can't speak well, we still like to mouth/talk words while signing. Deaf people like to lip read & watch signs together. It also looks better too if you mouth/talk while signing.
Keep up the good work with your signing though! :)
That was good signing, but it is a bit slow. Also, I agree with davidhdz1. Don't chew gum while you're signing as it can confuse the Deaf. You also have to practice your facial expressions and look at the person you are signing to. Other than that, good job.
Deaf people look at your entire facial area, so chewing gum is the WORST thing you can do when you are signing. It's like talking with your mouth full of food.
I can tell that your skills are very good :) but as the comment said before you look very bored and your eyes keeps darting back and forth which makes your signs very difficult to read.
ASL is more then just moving your hands. Your expressions, EYES, and lips, are also important. why do you keep rolling your eyes around? when signing you dont just watch hands you wactch the face and eyes too.
It's incredibly rude to chew gum whilst signing. That is all I could see. It takes away from the language. =o/

When you use ASL, your face is SO important! Your gum distracts not only from that, but you basically have NO facial expressions!
