No it wasn't. Vibrato is natural. It doesn't need to be suppressed. Especially in pop music, where voice doesn't matter as much as in classical.

Ayumi actually has really good vibrato. Many of her songs exemplify it. Besides, she was probably nervous after messing up the lyrics-- I'm pretty sure that's why her vibrato sounded bad to you. Ayu is great. :)

An ideal vibrato would be 6 oscillation per second, and a good singer would be able to control its speed at will. I doubt she has more than 4 oscil/sec, because i've watched her live a numbers of times and she always sang in this kind of speed, or even slower. It was just ugly.
