Get the phone which suits you best. The N900 works best for me. As did my N95 did in the past. You can argue till hell freezes over on which phone is better and still not convince each other. It's your money, do what you want with it. As for me... It have no complaints. Get 2 phones if you can't make up your mind.
Why are kids fighting over which phone is the best and claiming N900 sucks?
What are you going to do with this phone if you don't have extensive contacts from, say, business.. And you are under 18 years old? Will you also bum the $500 or so dollars from your parents?
hahahah have you seen the n900 in real life ? its not big and yes it is a little bit thick but i dont mind :D i dont want my phone to slip down in a hole or something :S XD
The phone already came out in North-America. Nokia has already shipped preorders and the rest should arrive in the week 48-50 to the retailers, maybe even before that...
i want this!!!!! my contranct ending soon, well soon next year and i was deciding between iphone 3gs, sony ericsson satio or nokia n7 but this looks sooo much cooler, whens it coming out in the uk?
Nokia didn't bother putting support for AT&T because it isn't worth their while. The entire US market only accounts for 5% of their sales - Americans prefer a simpler phone like the Iphone.
It hurt me buying the N97, because I was unhappy with it from day one, and sold it for half the original price after V2.0 software didn't improve things much. I'm placing my faith in the N900 - one last time.
seems pretty sick, i mean its a little on the thick side and im wondering about battery life but it looks really solid. That OS is pretty sexy lookin =] finally a linux based phone!
Heh-that's about the silliest comment i've heard about this phone. Copy? How the hell is this a copy of a HTC Hero? No keyboard, different os, res screen, 32 GB, pitiful RAM on the Hero, and the expected flood of Android software never happened because there are so many varients of Android phones, that developers have to make so many versions of the same software. Android 1.0 is a great opportunity wasted, but hopefully they will learn from this with Android 2.0
Hero - no keyboard. N900 Keyboard. Hero Cap screen, N900 Res screen. Hero Android, N900 Maemo. Hero max storage 16GB, N900 32GB, Hero 288MB RAM, N900 1GB, Hero 480x320 pixels. N900 480x800 pixels. Not saying which one is better, just wondering how the hell you see the N900 as a copy of the Hero? They are so different!
Okay I hear that, But If You had to pick either the N900 or HTC hero without Knowing the specs, etc. Based on face value which one would you choose? Be honest.
Picking a phone is like picking a woman sonny - I never pick either on face value. The stunning looking ones with little depth don't last long. They're ok for a bit of fun, but I'm looking for something serious, long lasting and Scandinavian. N900 for me then... Hope she doesn't turn out like my last one - N97 - she was such a disappointment to me... thought she was the right one but she turned out to be about as much use as a iphone camera in the dark...
cirkusareba - your a retard. It's obvious that many of the features of the iPhone are better realised in other devices but my point is no other phone demonstrates the overall experience or "oneness" achieved by Apples iPhone. If you can't see this then you put yourself in the same catagory as the other fuck faced nay sayers and iPhone envy'ists.
Nope, I have a iPhone, but my head isn't so far up Apple's arse that I don't recognise that the N900 is allround a more powerful device than the iPhone. Need to send a desktop background picture via bluetooth? There ISN'T an app for that, and iPhone has awful customisation options. Hey, you like your phone? Good for you. Enjoy your iFart app. No need to get all in a strop just because a better phone is being launched - yours is fine...
comemysock - wanker...how apt, goes with your username. I think it's safe to assume your a grade a moron, I've read some of your other comments, perhaps you should put your sock down and get out and about a but more. Loser...!
willilau2006 - chill out ya spaz, my opinion on the Nokia N900 is valid, it's an opinion you arse licking fuckface so don't attemp to tell me I'm wrong. In my OPINION the iPhone is better, if you don't agree then fuck you...I couldn't careless.
the only win iphone could get is from the iStore, but soon developers will appreciate the open source OS of maemo.. you sir, are a noob ( Fallstar6301 ) you dont KnooowKia.. lol
@ Fallstar6301, first off, stop trolling on a Nokia video, secondly, just becuse the iphone can't do 75% of what the N900 can, doesn't mean you can come on here with an inferiority complex and claim utter BS. iphone is yesterday's news in case you ain't heard, it's Android the N900 and Maemo need to keep thier eye on. EPIC Fail of an argument with no facts to back up your case, NEXT!
It's a a test model, they are usually always slow. iPhone wasn't much different tbh when they first launched. This units probably not running the final firmware either - not to mention he's multi-tasking quite a bit. Watch other videos and you'll see Maemo 5 is as smooth as anything you'll ever find on a mobile.
..And If there are slow-downs on the release software, they'll get fixed with updates. The OS is open source too which allows for endless tweaking.
man, look. The OS is a mobile based linux distribution, that means you can do everything with it, technically you can run every program, that runs on distributions like debian on your home computer. You can access every file through the open file system. The complete opposite of what apple was and is doing. Therefor this thing is (after numerous attempts) finally the one and only iphone killer! :)
Watch out, it's not mobile phone, it's tablet PC with GSM functions, so it's like netbook which you can call with. But maaan! 720p video with 11 other tasks running? The most phones can't do even those 11 tasks. :o) I know, now i'm comparing to phones, but you guys started. This mobile computer has no enemy. 32GB storage, Linux Maemo running on it, 4 desktops at time, HD video playing (some netbooks can't do) and many other features. Like someone under me said - "First device worh that money."
No...if you want to accept their marketing gimmick telling you this is an "internet tablet" go right ahead. It's way to small to be useful as a tablet and a 600MHz processor...Really? They want me to use this as a tablet with a 3.5" screen? Compare this to the HTC HD2 which has a 1GHz snapdragon processor and a 4.3" screen. Even my Touch Pro 2 has a bigger screen and a WAY better keyboard.
They can call it whatever they want, but this is a smartphone...and not a very impressive one.
Yeah HTC HD2 would be ok, if they hadn't put WinMO on it...laughable. You think 0.8" will make that much difference? The N900 has so many other things going for it, it's not really a contest.
Most people I know that hate WinMo only hate it because they can't understand how to use it. If you know what you're doing you love it.
I like what Nokia is trying to do here, but Maemo needs some more tweaking. The N900's UI looks sloppy and I'm not going to learn Linux just to fix it. Not to mention that's one of the worst keyboards I've ever seen.
I had WinMo, understood it fine - not so much hated it, just things have moved on since Ipaqs. Maemo has been tweaked for years, and what is exciting me, is the open ended nature of the OS. Don't like the UI? Then download a whole new one from enthusiasts not restricted by Nokia. Remember, it hasn't even been launched yet, and developers are already having a ball - example; Check out "Quake arena on the nokia N900". (Search for it here).
That's exactly what I do with WinMo. The UI sucks so I just get a new one. I can tweak every single thing I don't like about my phone software wise. That was my whole point.
I realize you can do the same with LInux, but why would I learn Linux when I can do the same thing with WinMo, which I am already familiar with?
And if Maemo has 3rd party developer support that's great. Nokia will need that for it to be successful, but the N900's too small to be a tablet and is impractical as a phone.
This is a great mix of phone and tablet - but on top of that remember it's a top media player (720P via TV out), smartphone (powerful calender and office suite), gaming machine(open gl 3D), communication device (Skype, fring, facebook, qik all preloaded). Winmo never satisfied me on any of those counts, and I patiently waited for years - from the original ipaqs thru Qteks mini s to my lumbering HTC TyTn II before going to N series, and loving them.
- The 720P output is cool, but I can't say I would use it much.
- Calendar and contacts is where WinMo excels. The fact that it plays SO nice with office and exchange is invaluable to me.
- Skype, facebook, etc are not preloaded on most WinMo devices, but I think you know how easy it is to get freeware for that.
I started off with the old Palm OS. It was meh. Then I moved to WinMo and never looked back. Android has gotten my attention and Maemo is interesting, but I still love my OS.
I couldn't see my self pulling out a HD2, receiving a call, and still keep a straight face- the thing is just too big even without a keyboard. Calender on n900 features OTA syncing of work calenders, and also supports mail for exchange. Contacts can be put on one of 4 home screens, and all your contact options (Gtalk, facebook, skype etc) are shown along with a live availability status.Meanwhile your friends can see your location as it is updated with your gps. All in the box, ready to go.
Also, these options are integrated into the OS, so if "John" sends an sms, you have the option to look at his availability on all those services instantly. I.E. you don't have to start skype, facebook etc to see who's online. All messages (voip, cell, sms, email) are sent to one place, so you don't have to check them individually either. Maemo has worked hard using the experience from previous devices to produce a very sweet device.
Don't get me wrong...I wouldn't buy an HD2. I don't purchase a mobile device unless it has a keyboard, which is one of the reasons the N900 would never work for me (that keyboard is horrible).
I have a Touch Pro 2. Best keyboard out there and great conferencing capabilities. I'm a business user so compatibility with my office PC is important. WinMo does that
A lot of the stuff you mentioned can be done with a lot of HTC products as well as Palm's Web OS (not that I would use most of that).
Maemo's been a tablet OS for years. Look it up. Now they just added phone functionalities cause SymbianOS was probably deemed unusable as a touch-based OS. Which i do agree on after using the Nokia 5800xm for a few months (it's a drag). And Ghz isn't everything, N900 has the same CPU as the iPhone 3GS, Droid and Pre.
Yes, but the iPhone, Pre, and Droid are smartphones...not tablets. If they're going to label this an internet tablet there needs to be something that distinguishes it from the average smartphone. I'm not seeing that.
the multitasking support is what stands out to me as a tablet. the way it shows you everything running is the closest thing to a real computer. android only shows you 6 things, iphone shows you nothing because it can't multitask anything but the phone and music app.
this is the phone i have been waiting for...i wanted some type of key board, watch movies, touch screen, good camera and threading messaging.... perfect....
still debating if i want this or palm pre or sony satio(iDuo)

*TV out i dont use ( I'l buy it if i ever need it)
*Like you need more than 20 GB
* 5 mpix makes the picture bigger not sharper, a german optics on a Finland phone, digital zoom makes the picture blury (better to take a picture and than to edit it( can do it with an iPhone))
*Like anyone ever has like an extra phone battery with them
Like you're not an Iphone bumboy right? If you seriously want a phone with a worse camera, worse resolution screen, an appstore that require Apple to approve all software and then take 30% of the money off the developer, less video codecs, no keyboard, 65,000 apps with 64,900 crap apps, battery dies=phone dies, no infrared port for remote use, no flash 9.4, no photo flash, and double the price, then go for a 3GS. If you do want all that at half the price of the 3GS, go for a N900.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
cirkusarena the 5 mpix makes the photos biger not sharper or better rez, resolutin maybe worse but is multy touch and scrach proof, n900's keyboard sucks (smal), if you are smart to jailbreake jour iphone you have 200,000 good apps including flash, and the n900 costs more than the iphone 3gs
the new macbooks have a non-removable battery that lasts 7 hours...as for me I've never taken the battery out of either one of my laptops...why would I ? same as my iphone its been working perfectly for 2 years now...
whoah not really the nokia n900 has a faster processor, can multitask just like the palm pre, has a physical keyboard. and this is just a few advantages over the iphone.
-No Flash Support (Almost Every Smartphone Has It Except The iPhone LOL)
Honestly The Only Thing Good About The Iphone Is The Apps. The Apple OS Was Pretty Awesome A Few Years Ago But Even That Looks Like Gargage Compared To Maemo.
you are a dumbass, camera isn't bad, photographs better then mine k810i :(, stereo speakers play loudly but also are quality... bluetooth doesn't suck you know sh*t bout it... well multi tasking should be there, but why to be playing more apps at one moment... memory... isn't 32 GB ENOUGH?? How do you think it flash? look for jailbreak that's a way how to "flash" the iphone, then you can install stolen apps.
even if he did iphone uses maximally 50 mb by my watcher turn on game - used 35 turn off- 35 mb, then start internet 45 mb used, clear mem. used = 10 mb :) so that are some nice specs and the phone's running pretty well, nothing's late or bad
just you can't stand the truth that iPhone's the best...
This is the only ""phone"" that can do quad boot. Those who know what a "quad boot" is, understand me ;)

Tonisyy 2 years ago
No...if you want to accept their marketing gimmick telling you this is an "internet tablet" go right ahead. It's way to small to be useful as a tablet and a 600MHz processor...Really? They want me to use this as a tablet with a 3.5" screen? Compare this to the HTC HD2 which has a 1GHz snapdragon processor and a 4.3" screen. Even my Touch Pro 2 has a bigger screen and a WAY better keyboard.
They can call it whatever they want, but this is a smartphone...and not a very impressive one.
skitzthegemini 2 years ago
Yeah HTC HD2 would be ok, if they hadn't put WinMO on it...laughable. You think 0.8" will make that much difference? The N900 has so many other things going for it, it's not really a contest.
cirkusarena 2 years ago
Most people I know that hate WinMo only hate it because they can't understand how to use it. If you know what you're doing you love it.
I like what Nokia is trying to do here, but Maemo needs some more tweaking. The N900's UI looks sloppy and I'm not going to learn Linux just to fix it. Not to mention that's one of the worst keyboards I've ever seen.
skitzthegemini 2 years ago
I had WinMo, understood it fine - not so much hated it, just things have moved on since Ipaqs. Maemo has been tweaked for years, and what is exciting me, is the open ended nature of the OS. Don't like the UI? Then download a whole new one from enthusiasts not restricted by Nokia. Remember, it hasn't even been launched yet, and developers are already having a ball - example; Check out "Quake arena on the nokia N900". (Search for it here).
cirkusarena 2 years ago
That's exactly what I do with WinMo. The UI sucks so I just get a new one. I can tweak every single thing I don't like about my phone software wise. That was my whole point.
I realize you can do the same with LInux, but why would I learn Linux when I can do the same thing with WinMo, which I am already familiar with?
And if Maemo has 3rd party developer support that's great. Nokia will need that for it to be successful, but the N900's too small to be a tablet and is impractical as a phone.
skitzthegemini 2 years ago
This is a great mix of phone and tablet - but on top of that remember it's a top media player (720P via TV out), smartphone (powerful calender and office suite), gaming machine(open gl 3D), communication device (Skype, fring, facebook, qik all preloaded). Winmo never satisfied me on any of those counts, and I patiently waited for years - from the original ipaqs thru Qteks mini s to my lumbering HTC TyTn II before going to N series, and loving them.
cirkusarena 2 years ago
- The 720P output is cool, but I can't say I would use it much.
- Calendar and contacts is where WinMo excels. The fact that it plays SO nice with office and exchange is invaluable to me.
- Skype, facebook, etc are not preloaded on most WinMo devices, but I think you know how easy it is to get freeware for that.
I started off with the old Palm OS. It was meh. Then I moved to WinMo and never looked back. Android has gotten my attention and Maemo is interesting, but I still love my OS.
skitzthegemini 2 years ago
I couldn't see my self pulling out a HD2, receiving a call, and still keep a straight face- the thing is just too big even without a keyboard. Calender on n900 features OTA syncing of work calenders, and also supports mail for exchange. Contacts can be put on one of 4 home screens, and all your contact options (Gtalk, facebook, skype etc) are shown along with a live availability status.Meanwhile your friends can see your location as it is updated with your gps. All in the box, ready to go.
cirkusarena 2 years ago
Also, these options are integrated into the OS, so if "John" sends an sms, you have the option to look at his availability on all those services instantly. I.E. you don't have to start skype, facebook etc to see who's online. All messages (voip, cell, sms, email) are sent to one place, so you don't have to check them individually either. Maemo has worked hard using the experience from previous devices to produce a very sweet device.
cirkusarena 2 years ago
Don't get me wrong...I wouldn't buy an HD2. I don't purchase a mobile device unless it has a keyboard, which is one of the reasons the N900 would never work for me (that keyboard is horrible).
I have a Touch Pro 2. Best keyboard out there and great conferencing capabilities. I'm a business user so compatibility with my office PC is important. WinMo does that
A lot of the stuff you mentioned can be done with a lot of HTC products as well as Palm's Web OS (not that I would use most of that).
skitzthegemini 2 years ago
HD2 - fuckin massive, I wouldn't carry that thing around with me and it hasn't got a physical keyboard either...
fiktiv666 2 years ago
Maemo's been a tablet OS for years. Look it up. Now they just added phone functionalities cause SymbianOS was probably deemed unusable as a touch-based OS. Which i do agree on after using the Nokia 5800xm for a few months (it's a drag). And Ghz isn't everything, N900 has the same CPU as the iPhone 3GS, Droid and Pre.
esaedvik 2 years ago
Yes, but the iPhone, Pre, and Droid are smartphones...not tablets. If they're going to label this an internet tablet there needs to be something that distinguishes it from the average smartphone. I'm not seeing that.
skitzthegemini 2 years ago
the multitasking support is what stands out to me as a tablet. the way it shows you everything running is the closest thing to a real computer. android only shows you 6 things, iphone shows you nothing because it can't multitask anything but the phone and music app.

*5 megapixel camera (2584 × 1938 pixels)
CMOS sensor, Carl Zeiss optics, Tessar lens
3 × digital zoom
Dual LED flash
*Removable Battery
I think these 2 specs just add to the whole experience. Imagine a laptop with non removable battery....

*Like anyone ever has like an extra phone battery with them
SuperTechmech 2 years ago
Like you're not an Iphone bumboy right? If you seriously want a phone with a worse camera, worse resolution screen, an appstore that require Apple to approve all software and then take 30% of the money off the developer, less video codecs, no keyboard, 65,000 apps with 64,900 crap apps, battery dies=phone dies, no infrared port for remote use, no flash 9.4, no photo flash, and double the price, then go for a 3GS. If you do want all that at half the price of the 3GS, go for a N900.
cirkusarena 2 years ago 7

cirkusarena the 5 mpix makes the photos biger not sharper or better rez, resolutin maybe worse but is multy touch and scrach proof, n900's keyboard sucks (smal), if you are smart to jailbreake jour iphone you have 200,000 good apps including flash, and the n900 costs more than the iphone 3gs

BILLYBOBMANTARAY 2 years ago
Specs ARE NOT almost the same as the iPhone 3GS. If you think so you need to read or watch again.
*Physical keyboard.
*FULL FLASH Support (now 9.4, after release 10.1)
*Faster processor.
*OPEN SOURCE
*Multi-tasking
*800 × 480 pixel resolution @ 225 ppi
*TV out (PAL/NTSC) with Nokia Video *Connectivity Cable (This is included within the sales package)
*32 GB internal storage. Up to 16 GB of additional storage None
with an external microSD card
americanforthewin 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
*To me a physical keyboard is not a good thing (makes it fat, some are very strange)
*If you have a good app store you don't need flash games and there are a lot of iPhone movie sites
*The processor is 600 MHz and the iPhone 3GS has a 833 MHz CPU underclocked to 600 MHz
* w/ 65,000 apps who needs open source
* Like i need GPS, Internet, Music and a game runing at the same time (that makes a device owerheat)
* Maybee the screen has the pixels but it aint got the multy-touch(it seems a bit lagy

specs are almost the same as the iphone 3gs so that means the iphone is also a mobile computer.

whoah not really the nokia n900 has a faster processor, can multitask just like the palm pre, has a physical keyboard. and this is just a few advantages over the iphone.

The iPhone Is ASS :
-The Camera Sucks
-Build Quality Sucks
-Stereo Speakers Sucks
-Bluetooth Sucks
-No Multi-Tasking
-Limited Memory
-No Flash Support (Almost Every Smartphone Has It Except The iPhone LOL)
Honestly The Only Thing Good About The Iphone Is The Apps. The Apple OS Was Pretty Awesome A Few Years Ago But Even That Looks Like Gargage Compared To Maemo.
Accept It!
07liberian 2 years ago 6
you are a dumbass, camera isn't bad, photographs better then mine k810i :(, stereo speakers play loudly but also are quality... bluetooth doesn't suck you know sh*t bout it... well multi tasking should be there, but why to be playing more apps at one moment... memory... isn't 32 GB ENOUGH?? How do you think it flash? look for jailbreak that's a way how to "flash" the iphone, then you can install stolen apps.
