Back when England was England. You can see it in the man's face. Unmistakably British. I want to live in those distant days when life was simpler and more honest.
This the most beautiful piece of music one could wish to hear. For me it describes the feeling of longing we surely all experience at least once in our lives. A longing for to those times when we were still nice to each other. I believe this was written during WW1 so it is hardly surprising it conveys that quality. It also conjours up the impression of the countryside..
Rafael Druian played with the Cleveland Orchestra back in the 1960s. This piece must have been recorded then. I always thought Louis Lane's (under George Szell I believe) conducting muted a lot of the detail in this piece. There's a 1987 Telarc recording by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Andre Previn conducting and Barry Griffiths on violin which I like much better. I met Louis Lane at U of Akron when he taught there. Very nice man. I just prefer more clarity in the individual notes.
@purplevolcano That 'grumpy old face' wrote some of the most exquisite, sensitive music (like this that we are all enjoying) in musical history. He composed with his heart very obviously. Can't judge a book by its cover.
@windstorm1000 To be fair in higher Brain Wave Frequencies that many musicians function in during mental composition tend to the mind withdraw awareness from the body; in turn total relaxation, removal from the social necessity to main an appearance e.g. smiling. His eyes look like they are experiencing a world far beyond our own.... Food for thought!

I like the juxtaposition of the most beautiful piece of music in history (no exaggeration) with this picture.

@windstorm1000 - I don't mind him having a grumpy old face, I thought it was funny, that's all.
