  • This video goes to show how versatie and resiliant to faults the HSTs are. A more modern unit would have been declared a failure and a replacement set would have been called messing up timetables even more so than the inconveniance of a slow runing train.

  • I've been on a train that's done that once!

  • I dont see why they let it go when there's probably a perfectly good power car at the nearby Longrock depot! Great vid!

  • Happened to be waiting for a train at Reading a couple of months back and a HST rolled in from Paddington with a failed forward power car. It carried on although at a slower pace, and much slower start off speed. Eary with a silent engine though! The sound of a HST is awesome, and just shouts POWER.

  • I luv the 43s. I want to get two FGW 43s from Hornby sometime.

  • With just one PC working, I thought it could still provide ETS to the whole train, just reduced traction power if it's heating the whole train, and thus by losing one PC you actually lose more than half your traction power, however, it must be slightly 'creepy' driving an HST set like that, although it's probably not much different to a Mk3/Mk4 DVT, however, these are particarly rare on FGW, who tends to use 'locomotives' for all it's express workings

  • You may be right about the ETS issue. A certain amount of Train Supply is needed for the Air Con as well as the Train Heat. I have forgotten what the trade off is when one engine is either not running or a least no providing Traction Power, it's been 15 years since I last drove an HST an my knowledge is "rusty" I got rid of my fault books when we lost the Paddington work to senior men at Exeter back in 1994 so I'm not up to speed.

  • On one engine full ETH is available from the running power car. the trade off is a loss of available horsepower for traction, if memory serves it's around 200hp, but I may be wrong.

I would be very surprised if Laira did not know of the fault and clued up the station fitters or got a replacement power car (if avail) at the station ready for swap out. Or a locomotive to assist over the Devon banks to Exeter. The rule used to be one engine and no assist, terminate.

  • the black horse must have worked up a sweat climbing up the dainton bank. thats one tough climb

  • ETS?whats that

  • Electric Train Supply - Used to be called ETH (Electric Train Heating) but has since changed with the latest traction modifications and rule book updates.

  • 43034 what a legend. shows you how well built english trains are. they last a good 20-30 years!

  • full valenta yay

  • val both ends

  • fair play The Black Horse!!

    Pity she died after!!

  • I got her last week at Long Rock on the rear of the 1600 out of Pee Zedd, pissing down and blowing a gale!!!!!

  • I got 002 and 003 on the 1st, from Bath to Bristol and back. they were pretty good!!

  • lol, thats a good usual video, thanks for sharing

  • Heheh, HST DVT :-D

  • an hst on 1 power car can reach 100mph, as the power required 2 make a train go at 125mph is double the power 4 100mph

  • How fast should HST's pass that place normally?

  • I think it's 60mph!!!

  • i got a feeling it is 60 but then again around that bend there a big hill and thats 75 though there, dont quote me on it

  • Comment removed

  • I'm not an English guy.. I am familiar with some expressions, but what does "ticking over" exactly mean?

  • Means it is not on the power basically just providing some power for the electrics at most

  • Okay, thanks.. So it is actually idling?

  • YEh, it's another way of wording it!

  • That really is a muted HST lol

  • The MTUs aren't that bad - I'd rather see HSTs in service, albeit with MTUs, than see them replaced by those awful Voyagers.

  • Well said that man....no pun!!!!! LOL

  • Where's the pun supposed to be?

  • MAN Traction unit

  • Voyagers/Pendolinos, there both shit! HSTs all the way, but no MTU shite! It wasn't a MTU that gave the HST's the title "FASTEST DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE IN THE WORLD", so support HSTs; MTU is MURDER!!!!

  • MAN TRACTION UNITS are no strangers to the Cornish Riviera Express or Cornwall,Devon or the Western Region for that mater. North British Warships, class 43 ironically. NBL D600's and NBL type 2 class 22 D6300's were all MTU's. As for Voyagers and Bendydildos, tell me about it. Coventry PSB on a Saturday when we have the Trent diversions!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Roll on the WMSC at Saltley, we won't have to see them then!!!!!

  • Every time ive been on a voyager, its been a totaly shite journey. If i gota go on one and theres no alternative, i drive. voyagers are total shit, peroid!

    HST's, best train ever built.

  • Too Right Bro' The only way we can get from Birmingham to the South West by train, is via Reading!!!! and by way of the Desert. Anything to avoid VV junk.

  • cosa if voyagers are the power of the future then i would be pretty pis**d that i would only travel at 2mph and also have you ever been on a voyager in summer from penznce? take a note, its not very nice

  • I took a Voyager from Penzance a month ago all the way to Leeds, and I can tell you it was not very nice at all.

From Plymouth onwards the Train was completely full. Luckily, because I got on at Penzance I could get a seat, but so many people had to stand, it was like being on the Tube. Plus, HST's have plug sockets so there is no reason why you should choose to go on a Voyager over an HST

  • Voyagers are awful. Some prat designed them so its like being in a toilet, the vibrations are frustrating, luggage racks are small, they cannot handle the Dawlish sea wall, do not have enough seats and you can't relax with an annoying engine underneath you!

Whereas HSTs are comfortable, have plenty of capacity, have a good buffet unlike this shop nonsence and have air con that works! And they are 31 years old. What does that tell you?

  • It Tells us LYPRC that somebody got it very wrong when they looked at the Voyagers and said "lets have some of them, they'll be great on the cross country services" NO names mentioned but I do know one person who put their names on the order/leasing sheet!

  • Sorry, but HST`s are crap, voyagers are the power of the future, even though they have less seats, etc, you have an engine under each coach,so you can here them thrash,

ive had every one ,bar five, for over a thousand miles now,i must be one of the main men for voyagers!

    HST`s,,no thanks,total shite.

  • wheres your brain mate? HSTs 125s are the best. Are you deaf to the beautiful sound they make?

  • Sorry mate but you are living on planet cookoo land.Just ask joe public ?????

  • i take it back - ur stoopid

  • cosa200 you are talking utter bol**cks Hst's rule its voyagers that are sh*te they stink and make everyone be sick and what do u meen bout 4 carriages i was one one from penzance to wolverhampton and i was so cramped it was so full that i complained to virgin and got compensationj for it so maybe its about time that you shut up your arse and give your mouth a chance

  • well said that man!!!

  • im sorry, but these old engines/trains are now well past it,the virgin voyagers are the power of the future, fantastic looking and sounding trains, well laid out inside, great shop on board, and you can plug your laptop in as well, why didnt virgin order more?

  • They're called Vomiters for a reason, Also, Paxman Valenta engines hold the world speed record for a diesel powered train, while the MTUs either run out of fuel or catch fire. Voyagers sound fantastic? In the words of Nan Taylor "WHAT PIECE OF OLD SHIT!". I rest my case =)

  • Hear hear!!!!

    well said that man!!!

  • Trams are hellfire all they need is a good refurb and they will last another 31 years, true the MTUs may have had a few teething problems, but noone can tell me the paxmans never either.... Besides the paxman thing is getting a bit old now, I have to say on the beast those MTUs aren't actually that bad, bringing a sound back to the Western Region that hasn't been heard for over 30 years....

  • hsts are 31 years old and they are still in use, that says something

  • Yeah, let's see where the voyagers are come their 31st birthday... I've never been on one, but from what I've heard, I don't think it's worth buying a ticket onboard a voyager. I now know why they don't let you do a 360 degree tour on the Virgin Trains website, whereas with the pendolino they do...

  • Voyagers better than HSTS, never read so much crap in my life!

  • How right you are.

  • hst's are great i love the sound they make, when they came out they were second to concord, i say that mtus are the way forward but they should keep those screaming napier turbochargers!

  • isnt it about time FGW got rid of these outdated old trains ,the paxman engine power cars are just crap,MTU power units is the answer ,the paxman engines are now tired and make too much noise,or better still, why cant FGW get rid of these terrible trains and take a leaf out of virgin trains, replace them with four coach voyagers, much better.HST`s,are terrible trains.

  • I hate those MTUs... They basically turn the HST into a Turbostar, which uses a similar engine to the MTU...

  • dnt be silly

  • Open your door and breath in ! yes its a real world. Please get in it ?

  • i love u
