Your dog's jumping technique is spectacular but your training technique should be rewarding Mitch for jumping over the JUMP, not placing the jump in the way of the reward, which in this case is the ball.

mayb u dont realise - they were bred for hunting, that means jumping over fallen branches after horses etc. they are also hugely bouncy dogs, so you cant judge if the jump is too big, for their size. my puppy's father (border) can jump into his owners arms from a standstill. and his owner is an average sized man. Great jumps really sweet dog ^.^

may i just say that you MUST NOT jump dogs of ANY size on concrete as i used to do it with my lil dog and he dislocated his front legs due to the amount of pressure .. now he is not allowed to jump atall so please stick to soft ground.. i am gutted i didnt take more care as my dog was such a good jumper - he is a chihauha only about 40cm high yet the highest he had jumped was 1metre ! he was amazing and he loved it but because i did some on concrete he can no longer do it :(

This is a lovely little dog who clearly enjoys jumping. Please don't ask your dog to jump too high though, it only encourages other people to do the same and a lot of damage can be done. Jumping is very stressful on the joints, and dogs under 12months shouldn't be jumping at all. Mitch would make an excellent agility dog and he would learn to go over a full course of jumps set at the right height for him. In the UK this would be no more than 35cm.

Thanks for the comment but Mitch is not going to be an agility dog. He only gets jumped once every 3 or 4 months and it is not too much for him. He is never pushed too jump and always gets rewards. He is not your dog so please mind your own business.

He's turning 4 on April Fool's Day (LOL!) and is my little backyard agility champ :-) He's come from hopping over a few jumps to doing a course consisting of tunnels, jumps, pause boxes, weave poles, dog walks/ramps, skinny jumps (like the XC ones lol) and I'm teaching him water obstacles) A video's coming soon!

Hiya.

Im sure he can't be that bad. :)

Don't go straight into jumping and don't start off too big.

Get him excited by something he likes, a toy or treats, something like that and play with him for a bit.

Then set up a small jump and lead him over it. Once he jumps it reward him with the toy or treat. That way he knows he gets something good for jumping.
