I was married to a woman who, like you, had a dreadful life, especially through her teenage years, and who adored this song. The song offered the hope of someone's exquisite passion for her whole being (not just her sexuality), compared to the utter humiliation her father inflicted on her (including her sexuality). His cries towards the end of the song are gut wrenchingly beautiful!

This was the theme for my old high school's homecoming dance in 1997. The girl that I went to the dance was 18 years old and I was 30 years old. This became our song all thru-out her senior year as we dated her senior year and 2 years after.
It was the best dance I had ever went to at PCHS, in Alabama. Thanks, Beth. You are always in my heart.

This is the closest version to the original radio play I've heard, only a fine ear (and a great memory) would be able to separate the differences. Good job, considering Benny put out about 50 wildly varied spins on this dynamite soulful ballad. Not bad if you consider the lyrics are about statutory rape..he he.
