  • Thank you for sharing. This evocative multi-layered sound-scape is now an indelible part of my musical wisdom.

  • The Friend I Never Met. Now i get it

  • RIP Michael. Everyone talks about how they're a "channel" for music that just "comes through them" and blah, blah, blah....Michael was the real deal. I've never seen anyone so in tune with their instrument or so open to their inspiration....except maybe Jimi Hendrix at Monterey....

  • RIP Michael.

  • HOW COULD YOU NOT LOVE THIS MAN!?

  • @Darpinion being a douche.

  • This is my first time hearing Michael Hedges and I really like what I hear. Beautiful music.

  • @65Britishbulldog Yeah man. Isn't he amazing? Great guitarist it's too bad he passed away at a young age.

  • I struggle to learn notes, chords, scales, progressions, melodies, etc. This was the guy pushing the edges of the guitar universe outward.

  • This seeerriously needs more views.

    Effing awesome.

  • He is my master.

  • I won't lie to you, this is fucking incredible

  • beautifl

  • Fantastic. RIP.

  • Michael Hedges must have had one of the best brains of all time. The skill he has is almost superhuman

  • @Ksimp9 coordination** brains have nothing to do with his skill.

he's most likely ambedextereous and has great coordination but there is no relation between his intelligence and his skill. its 2 different parts of the brain.

  • @jingeshan24

For a start there are many different types of intelligence, and coordination and rhythm require a very large portion of the brain so there is more than likely a relation between rhythm/coordination, and intelligence.

  • @sonicluke not really... no...

soccer players and other athletes have great coordination and their intelligence is equal to one of a squirl (at least in 99.9% of the cases).

  • Comment removed

  • @jingeshan24

I said there is a relationship between coordination and intelligence, not that coordination guarantees intelligence. "soccer player and other athletes" way to generalise "99.9%" of sportspeople

  • @sonicluke i wrote soccer players as an example of a sportsman... do me a favor and dont focus on such stuff.

and i dont care if you said if there is a relation or if the one garuntees the other, there is no relation between the two because they belong to different areas of our brain!

now please stop this meaningless argument ok? sometimes its ok to be wrong...

  • @jingeshan24

why should i do you any favors and let you argue like a moron, unless you know what you talking about you could refrain from commenting

"now please stop this meaningless argument ok? sometimes its ok to be wrong..." last word much?

  • @sonicluke by now the only one who gives arguments like a moron is you because while every argument i gave was a SCIENTIFIC FACT all your arguments were openions.

and if your intelligent brain didn't understood my last sentence i meant that sometimes its better for you to shut up.

make some reaserch next time you argue with someone...

  • @jingeshan24

    laughable

  • @sonicluke i just want clarify your statement. "rhythm/coordination, and intelligence" aren't necessarily connected as they are different parts of the brain. like jingeshan24 said some athletes may be devoid of intelligence but it's just because they don't exercise that part of the brain. musicians on the other hand connect the two parts of brain by music. in practicing instruments they have rhythm but music is a complex language that is directly connected to intelligence

  • @jingeshan24 i'm sorry for butting in but perhaps both you and sonicluke may want to calm down before arguing. Also, i may have to disagree that you stated any scientific facts at all. It isn't the case that 99.9% of all athletes/sportsment or whatever you want to call them are necessarily as "intelligent as a squirrel". (you said this in an earlier comment.) while some athletes may be dumb 99.9% is a ridiculous percentage. unless you can quote a credible source, i can't believe your stats

  • @TheDanDrizzite 99.9% is a metaphorical number mate... i didn't really meant 99.9% and if you understood differentlly you dont understand sarcasm mate.

but you have to agree that most athletes have below avarage intelligence. (and there is proof to that just look it up on the internet.)

  • @jingeshan24 sarcasm is a tonal thing... so it's a little bit difficult to read. Anyway, i've met a lot of dumb athletes and most aren't the most presentable on television however there are still many athletes that are smart.

i did wat you said and looked it up on the internet and found just the opposite of what you proposed NCAA data shows 4 out of 5 student athletes graduate on time which seems pretty good considering as of 2005, 50% of students nationwide dropout and that number is increasing

  • @jingeshan24 now i don't want to spark any heat, honest. i simply disagreed. i have not found anything on professional athletes and you may be right about professional athletes. i don't know. i did find that many people have asked about the "dumb jock" topic and most people only know the dumb things athletes have done but that's a media portrayal and not necessarily a whole picture

  • @TheDanDrizzite i understand you dont want to spark any heat and that's why i try to give you the best answers i can. i'm not speaking about dumb actions, i'm speaking about intelligence and they are 2 different things.

some of the greatest criminals in history have iq's of 140 and above.

  • @jingeshan24 that's fair but don't you think that the NCAA statistics are pretty powerful numbers in terms of how to look at the intelligence of athletes? I mean unless you believe that the American collegiate level education system is a flawed one. But even so, 4 out of 5 athletes graduating under 6 years of college is pretty good. I mean it shows that 80% are, at the very least, passing college level education. i'm not sure what you're getting at with criminals though.

  • @TheDanDrizzite college education and overall education have nothing to do with intelligence just so you know...

my friends iq was mesured at 152 in a national survey a year ago (mine was 139 if i recall correctlly) and he has below avarage grades.

in order to succeed in school and college you need to have a good memory and a loat of will to sit on your ass for hours and study.

most people dont have that willpower but it doesn't mean they are less intelligent at all!

  • @jingeshan24 well then i suppose you are right

  • @TheDanDrizzite

I like the discussion starting to involve more than just wide ranging stereotypes and radical conclusions stated as fact, i agree with most of what you said regarding music.

  • @TheDanDrizzite

about "rhythm/ coordination being related to intelligence" . As i said there are various types of intelligence. The skills involving in music and rhythm in particular are wide ranging in the brain. Tonal centres of the brain are closely related to the language areas. Rhythm does not occur in a specific part of the brain, rather it causes many brain systems to interact and even become synchronized in term of their neuro electrical signals, which makes it quite unique.

  • @jingeshan24

    ther just lazy

     but Michael is great

  • @jingeshan24 You're absolutely right man. I think a lot of really intelligent people don't do well in school because they really don't give a shit about conforming to the status quo. Education - especially higher education - is a lot about conforming to the standards of society.

  • @Darpinion i couldn't have said it better myself mate :)

  • @Darpinion Yeah dude...

  • @Darpinion well said!

  • @Darpinion Well, one should never be too narrow-minded. Trying to absolutely avoid conforming to society results in acting just as mindlessly. Being individual or intelligent does have nothing to do with avoiding to conform oneself but to act out of true, not just self-confirmatory reasons.

  • I like it how he always explains to the audience about his harp guitar.

  • è un figo!!!!

  • So many followed... some had the skill, but none had the heart

  • @dave1012967 I think it's exactly the opposite! For example, I LOVE his music, but I absolutely don't have the skill to play his songs... And I think many would agree.

  • @Hendik88 Hedges technique was very unique. He was very strict with string stopping and making sure notes were cancelled out.

  • @dave1012967 I would not say non, to every master there is an apprentice

  • 來聽神人的吉他演奏吧!

  • absolutely AMAZING.. music.... AMAZING....

  • any one notice the intro similarity to "the friend i never met"

he wrote it for hedges too :O

    miss you michael

  • screw stephen bennet. hedges is the only guy EVER to EFFECTIVELY use the harp guitar

  • I agree with you OmegasWill & when I saw him play with Manring I was blown away.

I had thought RUSH had shown what 3 men could do, but I was blown away with what 2 men did that night.

When they unplugged their instruments & played down in the crowd & through the crowd stepping on chairs, with people standing out of their chairs watching them, to the door & out into the alley I was in tears that they could end it that way as RUSH due to fans never could & yet I knew it was all done for effect.

  • the only guy?

  • Andy Mckee utilizes it pretty well, in my opinion, but yeah Hedges totally rocks the harp guitar.

  • Andy Mckee is the CLOSEST living example of Michael Hedges

  • They don't even have the same playing styles. I think Antoine Dufour is closer.

  • my vote would have to go to billy mclaughlin but he still can't hold a candle to michael.

  • I don't think Antoine is like this. I love Antoine's work but I wouldn't say it's like this. Antoine's songs have great structure and very good use of harmonics.

Andy's harp guitar playing is a lot like Michael's, but otherwise not so much. His 6 string playing is amazing though. I love all of these artists though, because they are a lot different

  • Doesn't David Lindley play harp guitar?

  • Does anyone know when this was recorded?

  • Around 1987 I believe.

  • July 1986 video from the S.I.R. Sound Stage in LA

  • I just read about him in a Gregg Braden book. What a genius!

  • TELL ME THIS BOOK PLEASE!?

  • gregg braden from the divine matrix? what was he doing talking about michael hedges?

  • Tragic how he died at such a young age in a car crash too. Another great . . . here for only a short time.

  • the man driving the car that killed michael was george bush.

  • not working for me either, didn't work last time either

  • Write &fmt=18 at the end of the url and it should work

  • idk how figured that out but thx

  • damn theres no sound playing. this is a great video too! I guess its just my computer because it seems nobody elses is having this trouble.

Still, Just watching the movement is just mind blowing

  • Unbelievable and I love the way he gets off on the music. A true music lover and he,s got a new fan now!!!

  • this one makes me glad to live.

  • amazing. i first heard of him from andy mckee. i have to say that andy mckee is like a reincarnation of michael hedges. he's carrying the torch that michael hedges handed down to him.

  • I heard of him for the first time yesterday from a friend, and oh my god..absolutely amazing. his music, i feel, it like literally touches my heart.

    its so beautiful.

  • i love Michael Hedges. what a sad, sad loss.

  • wow

  • what a great musican and a great song. sadly missed

  • Music this good just doesn't age. I love it!!

  • Mind-blowing. Hedges was one of a kind.

  • I cant believe! He is so fresh! Relax! and the music its so perfect... Michael Hedges is still here for me...

  • wow hes amazing

  • he was exceptional.thanks for the video

  • 1800$ on average ain't too bad..go buy one brother and listen over and over and over to this sheer brilliance..and TAP into this universe.

  • Andy Mckee is obviously influenced by this guy. Cool harp guitar! How much are those anyway?

  • They can cost quite a lot, usually an average is about $1800 for a good one.

  • Yes Andy McKee said that Michael Hedges was one of his greatest influences.

  • Only thing with Andy is that after 10 minutes of listening to him you heard it all and it gets pretty boring. Michael never had that effect on me. I am not taking anything away from Andy, he is very talented but he is not Michael or Don Ross for that matter.

  • agreed

  • thanks, sanctusignis. please let your other Michael Hedges fan friends know.

  • Michael Hedges never had a Facebook page before. So I decided to start my own. Just go ahead and type in "Michael Hedges" in the search box and you'll see the page: "Michael Hedges: The Guitarist from Another Planet". I want to see if Hedges's fanbase is still out there somewhere. Long live Hedges!

  • I just joined.

  • I miss him too

  • i miss him. r.i.p. michael

  • I noticed comething interesting about this piece... at no time does he fret a string with his left hand and pluck that same string with his right hand to make a note sound. In other words, there's no "plain" pickin' in this composition!

  • Good call. I'm so bowled over by the technique and the music itself that I often don't stop and THINK about what I'm seeing when I watch the Hedges clips.

He must have developed some SERIOUS left hand strength for that continual hammer-fretting technique (although I'm sure his amp/EQ rig helped in pronouncing it).

  • Was picking away on my guitar tonight, and I hit a chord or two that reminded me of Michael Hedges that I heard years ago on that WIndham Hill album....jumped on Youtube to see if I could hear him....and cant believe that he has died....what a stunner...he is an incredible muse....may his musical gift and generous spirit live on in all...

  • Why people is so idiot... I've showed this wonderfull playing to my academy music friends and they don't apreciatte it... I don't know where they have their soul, their heart, their ears...

  • You know why? Because like a lot of people in academia (present company excluded, of course) instead of having music in their hearts they have their heads up their butts.

  • You're in good company I think. Didn't Michael himself bail on the academy for that very reason?
