  • listened to this song eversince 2000...one of the best albums i've ever had that time...'til now...i still gettin' chills...after 11 years, now i'm curious bout the novel itself...i wanna read it...(even though im not a reader...XD)

4 thumbs up for the remake of this song...XD VIVA RATM!!! XD

  • these guys need 2 do a show with public enemy

  • Молодца!!! Создалось такое впечатление, что у них все композиции в особенном исполнении (скучать не приходиться).

  • OMG Tom is rocking the cherry gibson double neck aka Jimmy Pages guitar. That is fucking awesome.

  • I like to draw the rage against the machine red stars on politicians campaign posters while listening to this song

  • zack is so badass!!!!!!!!

  • soooooooooooo tiggggghhttt!!!!!

  • When I was 12 this was my first concert form this tour. Zack broke his ankle earlier in the day but limped out on stage an hour or so late, thanked the crowd for their patience and then went into People of the Sun. I broke my nose about 8 seconds later and couldn't have cared less.

  • I can't believe they were performing this cover as far back at '97

  • What the hell is this? Morello's version with Bruce is the best. This is shit.

  • Their whole point was their message. It's a Goddamn shame it was completely lost on the crowds of over privileged 16 year olds, and dumb frat boys they played for. Bruce Springsteen wrote this song, and his version is MUCH better.

  • @ExUSSailor You say that as if all people who like Rage are stupid and only listened to them for their sound. There are plenty of us who loved them (and still do) for their message as well as their sound. And I think this version sounds better because, well, it sounds RAGING which is kind of the point of the song. It supposed to sound serious.

  • @ExUSSailor Wow. No. Tom Morello is a great metal/funk experimental guitarist. The bass is beautifully horrific. The drums are perfect for the song. The vocalist isn't that great but is creative lyrically, and is good with Dynamics. I am a musician myself. I come from the lowerish middle class people of my city. I'm foyrteen, and listen to Classical music, experimental like... everything, jazz, something called trip-hop. I listen to Rage against the machine about 37% for their message. 0% rep. .

  • @jumpinjoe88 Your comment doesn't make too much sense, but from what I gathered... YOU SUCK!!! RAAAAAAGE!!!!!

  • @jumpinjoe88 you really are a fuking idiot

  • what gives him that adrenaline

  • Zach is a dancing fool @ 1:39...ROCK!!!

  • 'Families sleeping in their cars out in the Southwest, no job home no PEACE no rest..."

  • If this one of THE Great bands of ALL time.. ..... Will be Relevant 4 Ever 4 evary Generation....

  • Five people don't like that there was somebody there when they were a cop beating a guy.

  • @BCsJonathanTM Please enjoy the music and support rage, stfu with these kind of indirect 'I want thumps up' comments. Thanks

  • Comment removed

  • @Kwaadvlieg Sorry I didn't comment the right way massa. I'll just stfu and wait for you to tell me what to do and how I can do it? And how the are you supporting Rage? Did you hit the "Donate" button? Hey, do you want a thumbs up for being on Rage's sack? Get off it. I think that making a reasonably funny comment that applied an interesting meme that's native to (as far as I know) Youtube commenting, was a valid comment and a contribution to this page. More so than your hating-ass comment.

  • This is so unbelievingly powerfull!! Great song, great band, just simply great!!!

  • man i was just sleepin my car for 2 moths, this shits for real

  • Bruce Springsteen wrote this song -love it !!

  • i wonder is everyone listens to the lyrics and get inspired like i do..

  • They should make an eargasm button.

  • Comment removed

  • wherever somebody's strugglin' to be free.. look in their eyes ma' , you'll see me !!!

  • groovey shit :D

  • jayz favorite ban is coldplay smh..if he wasnt a mason this would b his fav...rage....against the machine....

  • Brad Wilk is able to wear or not wear a shirt in the blink of an eye. Pay attention to the video.

  • I love that raw, gritty emotion in Zach's voice. It's genuine and is needed in music today.

  • They didn't die. Wtf

  • I can`t believe they died

  • @SuperTbrown

that may have been the most retarded comment i've ever seen. go die.

  • I wish they would do another album...They have such a unique sound it make me want to smash this lapto$!#%

  • @Z3Carpentry I believe their going to have another one coming out this year.

  • @westernwisconsin yea this summer?

  • @Z3Carpentry they are its going to be relesed this summer. zack announced it after their south america tour

  • @bagleyaj18 Well put man couldn't agree more. Zack is pure 100% that badass!

  • @Z3Carpentry Your wish has been granted, they are!

  • @disestablishme rage is definitely for freedom. I hope it wasn't misunderstood that I was saying they are for either facism or anarchism, because this would be a lie. And in regards to communism, I meant that rage fights for equality, and when looked at from an economic stand point, this would include some communistic views, the fact that theres such a negative connotation to the word is a shame. Your political views are also very interesting, I would be hard pressed to say I entirely disagree.

  • @BulldogsRule12 fascism and anarchism are in essence completely opposite political views. Would ratm preach completely contradicting things? No. And so what if they preach communism? Communism implies no political affiliation, its an economic system, the perfect one in theory, just as free market capitalism should be. Yes, one that fails, but look around and try and tell me capitalism is a huge success. Have some form of rudimentary understanding of concepts before talking about them, please.

  • @Seankr67 the only thing rage is for is freedom. REAL freedom. which makes them against corrupt politicians, secret government, and in fact one world government, one world banking, fascism, bush, clinton... theyre not left wing or right wing, because u have to understand the game, both sides are going for the same agenda, the left side wants a gradual transformation into a totalaterian government. the right wing wants to smash middle class into the lower class and plunge us into early graves NOW

  • Sublime videoo,si no t hierve la sangre cuando zack se pone a gritar no tnes rabia !!!

  • unreal at 1:34

  • RATM : Selling you into something you dont believe in since 1991

  • @vampyrhart

    LOL....so true.

  • @vampyrhart what is it that you dont believe? what are they trying to sell? records obviously, but truely you are a person of nobelity. you MUST be a person who genuinely hears the messege in the music and are turned off because of your dependence on unfair tax cuts... unless of course youre one of those people who cant hear shit over the sound of yourself, allowing other people to sculpt your opinion for you. or you could be one of those twilight whores. LOL!!!

  • everyone should start their day out with this song tomorrow.

  • Why does it always look like Zack's crying during this song?...

  • Even though I'm wiser now and know these guys are a bunch of commies their music is still good. Great workout music! : P

  • @BulldogsRule12

cause speaking out against an obviously corrupt and broken system designed to enslave the poor makes you a communist. better to have another generic corporate cut and paste pop star billionaire.

seriously, kill yourself. you are part of the problem.

  • @Robstailey

You're telling other people to kill themselves and you think I'm part of the problem? No doubt the band has some rockin sounds but the lyrics are preaching everything from anarchy to fascism to communism. It's a cluster fuck of shit. I can't help you're ignorant. Maybe with time you will see.

I actually don't listen to any modern popular music. Most of the music I listen to now is at least a decade old.

  • @BulldogsRule12 I agree.

  • @BulldogsRule12 Baa, Baa, Baa!!!

  • @herm696969

    Are you a sheep?

  • @BulldogsRule12 sorry but in my opinion (don't misunderstand me, I'm not insulting you), the last part of your comment is really regressive. At least in the way you have written it down.

  • @iamabigboy

If you're talking about my musical interest I basically meant that there has been no decent music for the last decade.

  • @BulldogsRule12 I think you haven't been searching deep enough.

    Have a nice day.

  • @BulldogsRule12 They speak out against communism and fascism ...they're just anarchist. Either way, I love their music, but I don't believe in that sort of thing.

  • i seen em in 99 in oakland, craziest show besides slayer war at the warfield where i went as well

  • look in their eyes Ma, YOULL SEE ME!!

  • They opened for U2 Las Vegas 1997. I waited until they finished to go inside the stadium. I know now, that was a stupid decision on my part.

  • Maybe the single best live song from the 90's. Such power and intelligence is Rage's music. Will there ever be anyone like them again

  • @bwconklin

yes, ya know the original song, the lyrics are written by Bruce Springsteen. first song on "the ghost of tom joad" album, witch is such an intelligent and perfectly well told story-album.

  • best band of the 90s, hands down.

  • @Robstailey uhmm, no, top 10 yes

  • ARM THA HOMELESS!!!!!!!!!

  • props to bruce for the lyrcis. but rage killed this shit.

  • Not only is this one of my favs by them and an outstanding performance. It has to be one of the best Bruce Springsteen covers yet. Awesome!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @SEVFEST Sorry, but thats not true. This song is written by Bruce Springsteen. He was inspired by Woodie Guthries song (the ballad of Tom Joad), but it's not a cover.

Springsteens Tom Joad is the original, this is the cover.

  • @ahlqvizt .... Thank You I stand corrected

  • Un clasico del 97...

  • Zack's energy at 4:40 is so amazing, raw, and full of emotion. You can so tell that's real, and that he's not just putting on a show.

  • My uncle had this concert on VHS when I was a kid. Man, this was the one performance that stood out to me. I love Rage!

  • FU*KING ROCKS!!!!!!!!!.......

  • @DogRedful

    sure thing you fascist fuck

  • @Robstailey Wow...based on the pure intellectual insight of your comment I'll have to reevaluate my entire world view. BTW, does your Mom know that you're posting on the internet?

  • i feel like breaking shit now.......rock on

  • @thunderforce67 wtf ever!!!

  • Wasn't Tom Joad that character in Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck??

  • @rolyat60003 Yes the greatest book ever written by my standards I really like John Steinbeck though he is my favorite author

  • How many people that love this song actually know who Tom Joad is?

  • @tomjoad32 i love this song but i have no idea who tom joad is, please tell me :(

  • There are few live performances that have this much raw power and feeling. Check out NIN Reptile live at Woodstock. It will blow your mind like this.

  • tous simplement génial, des fous de la seine.

  • awesome performance

  • Man, I was at this show. So solid. September of 1997 I think in Irvine. The Foo Fighters opened for them. Trying to pause it on the crowd shots but it's complete chaos!

  • @kritikkal What was it like?

  • @futureshocker The band and the crowd were completely going off. Probably because the gig was in Rage territory (Southern Cal). Crowd jammed from the stage all the way to the lawn area in the back. I still have the backstage pass sticker from this show somewhere now that I think about it. Was working for a big celeb at the time so we had the big celeb's publicist contact the band's publicist and send us prime tix and passes like a day before the gig. Ah, the good old days.

  • @kritikkal

That's sweet man, who were you working for?

  • @kritikkal dude thats awesome...

  • Rock that shit! I'll always remember seeing these guys. Fucking awesome!

  • amazing headbang by zack! justin beiber pls watch this

  • @reverend07 He''ll probably start crying. that fcking baby

  • DOUBLE GIBSON SG GUITAR :)

good job Tom and The Rage Gang

keep on rocking in the FREE world , as long as justice takes

  • this performance IS rage's cover of this song imo, the one on renegades can't stand up to the perfection of this performance

  • i cried a little

  • There's something almost holy about this performance

  • Great band! Great song!

  • One of Springsteen's many great tunes. Done completely different by Rage. But they give it everything they have. 100% Respect. Love Bruce's studio, version, this one and the one with Tom playing with Bruce and the E Street band in Anaheim. Tom's guitar is killer @ the Anaheim show!

  • Is this on a Rage album?

  • @litlemadguitarist yea i think so, i think its the renagades album, they get a lot of song and make their own vers. im not sure though youll have to look it up

  • @litlemadguitarist Yep, it is on the "Renegades" album, and also " The Ghost of Tom Joad" Single, if you like this, you might want to check out "Maggie's Farm", which is also on the "Renegades" album.

  • @maynardminion I actually think it´s better live rather on the album. You can never kill real good live music :)

  • @litlemadguitarist Renagades.

  • He suffers from "PURE MENTAL REALNESS" FN beautiful .......This comes from the movement ........you know who we are .....the one s you think about before you sleep and the first one's you THINK about when you wake up. Don't be a slave.

  • A holy song

  • how the fuck is this live. i looked away and just thought it was the song. so much power. so much feeling. but fucking flawlessly presented in such a concise package. perfection.

  • 2:15 WOOOW

  • What album is this from?

  • Damn, Zack playin in the racist hometown he grew up in.

Irvine's a different world now man, and I bet it changed a lot in 1997 too

  • Springsteen does this with Tom at the 25th HArd Rock concert, toms solo is the best ever!

  • Tom is fictional character of novel who is a strong icon of the resistance of the weak people against the system that crushes them. RATM

  • Rage Against The Machine should really make a song with Immortal Technique.

  • This band, and especially this song, opened my eyes wide open during my teen years on many deep social and humanitarian issues, on the real power structure of our fucked up world. RATM's energy is very powerfull! Gives me chills every time...

  • @kinora98 Tell me, who ha the power in our society? Think about it. Please reply.

  • @destroysubgenres Tell me, my friend, what is it you want to hear...? The official story, or the real story...? Please think about thoroughly as well. Just wondering why you're asking this question. I can tell you however that power lies not in a parliement, nor in any visible political structure.

  • @kinora98 Thank you, I was hoping you would say that. We have the power, the millions have the power. Not the democratic power we would like however. I thought your comment implied that the power was held by politicians and billionaires. Sorry man.

  • @destroysubgenres No worries! :o) Although I must make a distinction between the power imposed and the potential power in our societies. I do believe that power nowadays is held by a handful individuals on the globe that we dont get to hear of. They are responsible for imposing the matrix of power we live in, because people dont realise yet, or are starting to awaken slowly, to the potential power of the masses, much greater than theirs! Cheers! :o)

  • who is tom joad ?

  • @6digit Tom Joad is a symbol of resistance of the economically weak people against the impersonal system which crushes them.

  • i wish i was half as cool as tom morello...lol

  • these guys are true badasses...if the word badass was in the dictionary, these guys would be the example and the picture

Ex. "Rage Against the Machine is a badass band" haha

    GREATEST BAND EVER!!!!!!

  • WOW

  • The emotion that rage puts in all their songs is just amazing...nothing like it! Awesome song by an amazing band!
