  • War is fought by common man, but declared by cowards who sit comfortably in their offices, homes & congresses. We are all brothers, yet against each other we pick up the standard to the death. There is no glory in battles, only the cries of pain, lost loves, mothers. Send the deputies, the congresses, the presidents, the leaders to war. It is their war, they so declared; let us stay home. Silent night it would be, if we just didn't go, for surely the pontificators dare not venture to.

  • My Grandfather was wearing a gas mask while on buriel detail. When he turned over 1 body his cousin was staring into his face.He was so overcome he took his gas mask off.He was exposed to the gas long enough that it killed him 7 years later. But not before he had 3 children. One of them my mother.

This government never ceases to go to war.The troops have to say No and disobey this President. It's not the troops fault. It's the people who send them off to war.

    Ron Paul in 2012..

  • My Grand dad was there on that day, he did not want to be there, but he had to be there,

Fighting in a war that he and his comrades did not understand, many of his friends died in that terrible battle, but those who started it were still alive the next day, I can say no more. except ,God bless them.

  • It is only time that tells us we were wrong to go to war or we were wrong to bail out the banks. If only for once we got it right there would be no need to hear such poignant songs as this. The song is beautiful and it is right we should always remember those who suffered because we got it wrong.

  • just amazing and agree the year is trivial what a dick head get a life

  • Looks like we'll be back fighting the Krauts again to get back our countries...

  • Brilliant, makes you soul search, my favourite recording

  • There was at least one small truce in 1915 when the church bells tolled in a French village. The German soldier who began the Youth Hostels after the war described it. This is described in my little book Oh Holy Night: The Peace of 1914, which includes several letters written by these soldiers, describing the truce....see amazon for reviews or my website link on my channel here.

  • It is so beautiful, I can't believe this is true. One of my favorite parts of history lessons, finally something good to say about humanity. Finally.

  • Great Song

  • In modern times now, we can sleep in our beds safe on Christmas Eve and go on to enjoy our families and the Festive Season; Hard to believe these poor men of this era had the stomach for the war the day after Christmas. They probably all died that very day, spare a prayer or a thought for those brave men who fought a terrible war in no mans land in 1915! R.I.P;

  • Sadly the human race has learned nothing since then. We still slaughter each other and will eventually start WW3 unless we truly change our greedy ways. Peace!

  • The truce took place in 1914, not 1915. By 1915 the hatred was so great between the two sides there was no truce. If the composer is going to write about an historical event, get the history right

  • @ronpacker1 shut the fuck up, trivial matters like the year don't matter the message is much more important, arseholes like you who argue over nothing are very similar to the pieces of shit who started these wars, its christmas, have a bit of tolerance

  • This is the best way to sing Stille Nacht at Christmas.

  • The faces of war are diverse the tears the prayers the pain and death the suffering they all share in common. Take care ADonovan43

  • Heard this song for the first time about 3 years ago, no doubt it gives us all something to think about. We are selfish and only think of our Christmas. We wan't all to be well and we know no better. Maybe this Christmas we can all spare a thought for those who are less well off than ourselves. God bless all who have gone before us, God keep us safe for many more Christmases & let us all try to think of those who won't be spending Christmas with their loved ones, spare a thought, thanks!

  • Beautiful and poignant!

  • Esopecially Poignant as Xmas and Remembrance day Approaches

  • wonderful performance and it only highlights the absolute madness of the great (ha) war and all the fine young men who died for nothing . All the worlds terrible troubles we now endure are a direct result of the King and Kaiser playing their war games ! anyway well done Jerry Lynch for this marvelous recording , twould bring a tear from a stone !

  • Thankyou so much x

  • If this interests anyone please see my spoken word piece on the Christmas Truce between the Allied and German soldiers on my channel :)

  • calling all captains

  • calling all captains

  • calling all good men from texas to hertfordshire

  • Its really nice to hear that one night, both sides joined to sing, exchange cigarrets , handshakes, and even play football.. for sure one of the most peaceful events I have heard.. its something really beautiful..

  • karlschlaussen

Excellent rendition of a favorite carol punctuated by the realities of war. My grandfather was there with the Seaforth Highlanders. Ironically his name was Karl Schlaussen. Thus my name here. He came home bruised and battered but NEVER forgot the night of peace.

  • brilliant, best best, Peace in all lands ....

  • Jct: My grandfather Adelard Turmel was a WWI draft dodger and we're not only happy about that but proud of him too. The "war to end all wars," a job with paycheck to end the hunger at the cost of one's body. They had no idea what they were dying about, who does?

  • @kingofthepaupers Jct: But don`t forget, the war financiers made a killing! Killings!

  • Mankind should end wars before wars end mankind.

PS. Love this song by Jerry Lynch.

    Lest we Forget.

  • war is hell, created by monetirists to perpetuate their own profits. It is sad to read the squabbles of Aurigale and righthand482. TRY PEACE AND GOODWILL TO ALL MEN. SHALOM. MERRY CHRIST MASS AND A GUID NEW YEAR TAE YIN AN' AW

  • @Aurigale "Letters of great men oft' remind us, as the blushing page we turn, that we sometimes leave behind us, letters that we ought to BURN" In your case, Jess, it's diarrhea of the mouth leaving stinking evidence of an inability to express yourself without insult. Today is the eve of my 62th. birthday, I propose not spending further time aiding your growing up to match your age or teaching you of the million killed by the illegal US invasions. Happy Christmas, dear Jess. Peace, child!

  • danke aus ndeutschland das hier die erinnerung an eine chtes weihnachtswunder wieder aus der vergessenheit gerissen wird

man mag vom krieg halten was man will... aber 1914 bewies das es auch anders geht

  • My mum and I watched this together, bawling our eyes out. Such a heartfelt, throbbing song.

  • Thanks Mary for letting us know abouit this 1,truly a fine rendition

  • THEIR BOOTS WERE WORN THEIR HEARTS WERE TORN BUT TO A DUTY THEY WERE SWORN ! Take care ADonovan43

  • @ADonovan43 duty? to kill? forget it. war will never bring peace.

  • Every time I hear this song I cry, my heart aches. When I see the barbaric killings on WW1 footage and the faces of teenagers who were old men well before their time.

Just as the Tommie cried so did the German - for they were just boys playing in a deadly game with the grown up toys of death.

As we approach this Festive Season I think of all old soldiers who will eat alone and cry alone this time of year.

Life is for living - not for killing.

    Frohe Weihnachten

  • All wars are planned by older men In council rooms apart, Who call for greater armament And map the battle chart. But out along the shattered field Where golden dreams turn gray, How very young the faces were Where all the dead men lay. Portly and solemn in their pride, The elders cast their vote For this or that, or something else, That sounds the martial note. But where their sightless eyes stare out Beyond life’s vanished toys, I’ve noticed nearly all the dead Were hardly more than boys.
  • Hi Guys,

    Check out "Joyeux Noel",

A beautiful film that depicts the events very well, :D

    Nollaig Shona Duit!

    Merry Christmas,

    Happy Holidays,

Ein frohes Weihnachtsfest und alles Gute zum neuen Jahr!

  • @Menton5646 I watched it. It is so lovely when the soloist and bagpipes perform together.

  • Enemy or not they are all humans. From both sides war is hell!!!

  • 1915 Never Again.

Never Again Will their Be a Genocide.

    Repent To your Sins.

So that They're wont be another Genocide.

  • Time for us Christians stop fighting between us, and stop our governments use us against one Christian Nation to Other for money or their greed.

We need Christian Brotherhood now… Merry Christmas, Amen

  • @ARDEN007 Hmm. I'm atheist/agnostic and I have nothing but respect for these poor sods. Realising one another as fellow human beings must've been difficult, but it makes me smile to think that they could at least "pull back" for one night and talk amongst one-another.

  • @ARDEN007 "We need Christian Brotherhood now…"

NO! Man's inhumanity to man! No god kills. Christians have killed more than their share in the name of one version or another of a Christian god. Now they wish to kill Muslims (Islamophobia) instead of each other. All this so that rich powerful men can become even richer and more powerful!

~~#An Irish atheist (former Christian) born on Christmas Day in 1948

  • @righthand482 What bullshit. Don't lump extremist Christians in with the decent ones. Where do you find evidence that Christians now wish to kill Muslims? Douchebag.

  • @Aurigale You clearly have little knowledge of history! Which branch of extremist Christianity are you a member? Who killed Muslims in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, etcetera? Maybe you have heard of Islamophobia?!

  • @righthand482 So you are saying that it's ONLY Christians who are Islamophobic. Then you're a generalising moron who needs to wake up and smell the roses. And indeed, who killed Muslims in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Palestine? Do tell! Was it perhaps the misguided CATHOLIC church during the Crusades? Or are you babbling on about the AMERICAN invasion of the Middle East? Or maybe the Islamic TERRORIST organisations who bomb their own cities?

  • @Aurigale Jess of "This is my shiny new channel. I abandoned the old one because, like many things of my youth, it's embarrassingly childish and haunts my nightmares. Like my background? It's my one concession." Gotcha, you believe at 20 that having left your teens you are a big girl now with the childish ability to insult all and sundry with 'moron' etcetera. "misguided CATHOLIC church during the Crusades"??? Child, there was ONLY the Catholic Christian church then. Protestantism was later

  • @righthand482 You know, it's quite amusing. Your experience with some church or another has left you bitter and jaded. That shows in the vitriolic diatribes you indulge in, irrespective of fact. You point out my age, well I point out yours. Your greater years of experience don't seem to have made you any more mature than me judging by your ranting and raving. Enjoy your 62nd Christmas knowing that you still have a lot of growing up to do. :)

  • @Aurigale My five years in boarding school with the Jesuits were the happiest days of my life. I changed from a fearful mama's boy into a tough Inter Provincial rugby player, afraid of nothing. So child you are barking up the wrong tree with your "some church or another has left you bitter and jaded." My interchange with every cleric has being positive. My knowledge of the various church bodies reinforces my belief in being an atheist. My advancing years have made me impatient in dealing with ..

  • @Aurigale ... upstart children. My "vitriolic diatribes" were provoked in your repeated personal insults without any provocation by me. Next time you are tempted to commence a discussion with insults, remember the Irish grandfather who had you across his knee figuratively for a good verbal tanning of your rear, BEFORE you display your inability to comment without insult and jump to false conclusion without ANY evidence. Peace!

  • @ARDEN007 Ugh.

  • truly beautiful

  • The truce was on Christmas 1914 not 1915. It happened at Messines ridge in Belgium Between the 2nd Bn The Royal Welch Fusiliers and the 134 regt of Saxons German infantry. It started when the Germans placed lighted candles on the trench parapet. Soldiers met in no man's land and others followed to left and right of the line. It was forbidden thereafter by higher command. Google it! Ulster Division entered France in early 1915.

  • i like it when celtic thunder does it better

  • great song great singer would you post his version of the dimming of the day if possible

  • 1915 armenian genercide

  • From what I heard, the 1914 truce consisted of a soccer match between the two sides. Or at least, that was one of the things they did.

  • for everyone who is disgusting enough to argue in the comments section of this page. shut up. this song is remembering the day when men put there differences aside for peace, so you lot can honer this song by putting your differences aside and stop arguing.

  • @frankly6062 There were apparently two Christmas truces. The first took place in 1914 and would have lasted much longer but commanding officers threatened courts martial if the soldiers did not resume the killing. In spite of that, truces resumed the next year. The horror of the conflict could have led at that point to a permanent decision by the soldiers to leave or to a hardening of their hearts. It is unfortunate that the war continued so long and without more truces.

  • How long untill we learn that to follow the evil intent of the few, many are sacraficed. How long people untill we gather under one GOD who wants nothing more than for us to love oneanother. These men will be remembered not for there war efforts but for there peace and understanding. The most important message for the world is that WE CAN live in peace and we can honor eachother if we only try, really try to achieve this as one who cares about the other.. THEIR MESSAGE IS CLEAR and not forgotten

  • I agree with kingweirdodude, that line is incredibly sad.......

Love the song, thanks for posting it.

  • soldiers don!t make war they fight them politicians make war if soldiers had there way they would all go home to live in peace with there families god bless all our soldiers for letting us live in peace

  • how do u know damn fates

  • very sad, war is still happening in 2009/2010,, we are not learning from the past. - Nollaig shona go di na paisti

  • Oh my... almost crying here... that was incredibly beautiful, but so sad. Thanks for posting this.

  • You don't need to cry, just learn from the words. Man is his own enemy.

  • Merry Christmas to you Jerry, this is just perfect.

    Your friend,Tony, Melbourne AUSTRALIA

  • I shot the boy.

I really can't handle that line. It really destroys me

  • Peace on Earth damnit. Enough with all the stinkin hatred out there.

  • @pkscolax viva best

  • @pkscolax I <3 u

  • try and get jerry singing the dimming of theday its beautiful

  • Pure and utter genius.

  • when was this recording made,,,

  • few years ago. hes irish

  • Oh, my! Amazing song! Very beautiful, sad song! Thanks to my friend for sharing with me. I'm so touched.

Tears in my eyes.... thank you!!!

  • listen to jerry lynchs cd called the dimming of the day great voice and some lovely songsas well

  • i watch my child take his footsteps, he wobbles unsteadly, i hold my breath, but he doesn't notice my unease, as he stumbles towards his favourite teddy,if only he could hold on to this innocence, never to know war and death, never to know the loss of friends killed in acts of violence, torn apart by bombs and bullets, acts of violence carried out by adults who were once as innocent as this child i now observe, who played with teddy's themselves, brought them to bed and dreamed fairytale dreams.

  • Briliant

  • Very nice version. Though the actual event happened in 1914.

  • when was this version recorded?

  • the 2 comments below are confusing...sorry its the second 1 by me that your supposed to read first and it continues above...i didnt have enough characters left :P

  • instead of the Germans shooting them like sitting ducks they fired lights so they could see their way back to the trench, Just shows that it was the governments that were evil not one single poor soldier that died for his country. R.I.P Victims of WW1 and WW2 <3 :/

  • Good Comment bowmastery....These young people were like young lion cubs lead by Mules. What was it for! A Fight between Manic, Inbred, dysfunctional, first Cousins to claim for for themselves more "Imperial Gain" ........ "Just some more poor boys fighting richmens Wars"......... What has Changed...Now it's...Hialiburton, Blackwater, General Dynamics , Lockeed Martin, Exxon Mobile... and the Corporate Generals Calling the Shots......Rather than King or Kaiser or Country....

  • It just reminds you that the men on the front line were not enemies. they were all the same, fighting because they had to. there was no bad or good between the soldiers, they were all humane...i know of an example taken from 'Journeys End' by R.C. Sherriff. A british soldier was shot down in No mans land by the Germans at early evening, and was moaning all night, so when three other british soldiers went out to get him,

  • The words have a lesson for us if we will but listen. NO matter our country of origin, I think we all want peace in our time...between all men...each free to worship in his own way...or not at all.

Strange how each of us is sure WE know just what God wants us to do. Personally I think he just wants us to enjoy the music and try to remember the words of the song. Mazel Tov to all

  • no you want peace not all

  • Beautiful song and sentiment. Pray for peace - Christian unity and no more brothers' wars.

  • Yes, song is heartbreakingly beautiful. Too bad Christianity has caused more wars than any other topic on earth. I think christ would be appalled at what takes place in His name. If we could all listen to the words of this song, so well sung, and consider the meaning...wouldn't it be wonderful. No need for No Man's Land.

    Will it ever happen????

  • Christianity has caused more wars than any other topic on earth? Where did you read that, in a public school textbook? WWI was not fought over Christianity. It's what brought these brave men together on Christmas Day. WWI was a tragic, senseless war brought on by greedy and power hungry leaders.

  • You missed my point completely. The TOPIC of Christianity has produced wholesale slaughter for millions. Christians killed 6,000,000 Jews -WWII

Christians fought Muslims during the hundreds of years of the Crusades. In Ireland it was Christian against Christian. In the U.S.Civil war...Christian against Christian. Scotland vs. England for hundreds of years...Christians all..

Like you kenaz888, I would like for it all to stop...as of yesterday. Christ was a Jew anyway. Not his fault

  • NAZI party were an Atheistic movement,

they persecuted and murdered Catholic Priests and Protestant Ministers too.

I'm Irish and the "troubles" in the North are hurrendous.

It's a bit ironic that when Irish Catholics served in The British Army there was a bond there that united both the common Protestant and Catholic soldier.

Yet the Catholics were treated like animals by their superiors.

R.I.P. and "THANK YOU" to those who died for the freedom of Europe

  • ah what planet do you live on not heard of the inqusition? 800 years of mass murder and lets not get into the popes crusades the wealth of the catholic church today is gathered through hundreds of years of barbarity slavery mass murder and death

  • when was this recorded?

  • This is such a beautiful song. A friend of mine so is a great singer does it every so often in the pub when it's nearing the end of the night and the whole place hushes and everybody listens, and only joins in for the part 'silent night...' It's such a poignant, heart wrenching song-i love it

  • My high school teacher said war reduces global warming by removing CO 2 producers!

  • what a great song ,,, it tears me up man

  • My girlfriend and I went to Dublin just before Christmas and stumbled across The Brazen Head. It was a Sunday afternoon and they were advertising live music. I'm English, so we had a bit of good natured banter with some locals before one of them sang this in front of the crowd and dedicated it to us. I'd never heard it before, but it was truly beautiful and I nearly embarrassed myself by bawling my eyes out there and then. A great gesture and a great song which I'll never forget.

  • Beautiful song

  • What an emotion trip, but the first four verses hint that pan-European harmony is a possibility.

  • Talk about a tear jerker, and it's worse when you listen to it with a few jars on you.

  • Sad but beautiful

  • ps: my grandfather was there! he drank with the Reichswehr dudes only once before officers from both sides came and ruined the party!

  • excuse acerb4..., allow me just a little correction: "Reichswehr" was called the german army between 1919 (= after WW1) and the time of the III.Reich Wehrmacht. The Reichswehr was the so called "100000-Mann-Heer" , according to Versailles.

...and yeah, Paulaner Weizen ist a very good beer..... among a lot of other very good beers in this country. greetings!

  • Germans are cool! happy no more wars. .....ps: Drink Paulaner Bier! best beer in Munich!!

  • just a great song

  • This haunting song gives me a glimpse of my grandfather's world in WWI. Jerry Lynch has a raw story telling quality to his song, which I enjoy. While Celtic Thunder's rendition is pleasant, its overly crafted harmony lacks authentic sentiment, in my opinion.

  • This is a great song. Listen to Celtic Thunder sing this song. They do a wonderful job.

  • Men! Why? Rhetorical question, I suppose. :p An exquisite and poignant ballad. I liked the line "And neither we nor them atall to blame". That's why I always support the troops, even when I'd dearly love to throttle the #@$%s who start the wars.

  • This is one of the saddest songs i ever heard. I wonder if I can get the sheet music for this song so i can sing it. Does anyone know ? ?

    Merry Christmas all.

  • reminds me of my great grandad & his pals fom the South Lancashire Regt, god bless em all!

  • This is the definitive version of a beautiful poignant song.Publicised in Ireland by RTE radio's Ronan Collins it is an annual favourite at this time.Well done.

    Clontarf Man.

  • Brilliant song.....

  • just great

  • Timeless. I long to hear this heartfully sung in this sad USA, where the President elect's choice of future dog makes the cover of The New Yorker while a dispute over the validity of his birth and right to serve as President undermines hope for his opportunity to serve.

  • Very moving. My grandfather died 2 months after the Great War began, his body never found but promoted for going to the aid of an officer under heavy fire. Grandmother gave birth to her fifth child two months later - he was my dad; he went to war in 1938; In Crete he woke up in a pile of bodies of comrades wounded but alive; sheltered by brave Cretans but captured and forced marched to Poland and a coal mine.He survived among those millions of brave men who did not.

  • Powerful ballad *****

  • A powerful voice

  • This was very good. Crisp, clear - good.

However Celtic Thunders rendition was also powerful and genuine/sincere/heartfelt, I thought.

    CELTIC THUNDER REIGNS SUPREME!!!

  • great version - still dryin' my tears...

  • Sorry...but this is the best version by far...in my opinion...xx

  • My Daddys favorite..God rest his soul xxxpeace xx

  • Jerry's version is very good, but the version performed by Celtic Thunder is even better. I've played it for the umpteenth time. It's really beautiful.

  • really great video

  • hell machree, have you heardPeter Corrys recording of Belleau Wood. Its aversion of asong done by Garth Brooks telling the same story.if you want itlet me know Joe

  • I love the voice of Jerry Lynch.

  • i was told this was a true story. garth brooks has a version of the story i can't remember the name of the song. i don;t believe it received much air play.this or garth's are both beautiful.either one can bring a tear to your eye.

  • yep its completely true. I just saw an interview here in London with the last british soldier still alive who was actually there. In 2003 he was 107 years old. The Generals had to threaten court marshals to get them back to fight each other. So sad they should have stopped.

  • This is so sad. The bit were he sings "I killed the boy that sang in no man's land", got me. The chorus at the end is beautiful. It's amazing what happened on that day. God bless each and every one of the men who have fought and will fight in the wars They truly are heroes. RIP.

  • The movie about this, "Joyeux Noel", was

    really great.

  • they should have ended the war right there, because nothing was resolved after the war.

  • and it just lead onto world war 2. so sad.

  • since my last comment, there is another version called no man's land.garth's version is belleau woods.the german'held it until the us joined the british in june of 1918. they say it was one of the bloodiest battles in ww1. the navy named one of it's ship's uss belleau woods.i'm not sure of the type of ship.i know they were naming cva's for ww1 battles.one was the uss coral sea.they were naming their battleship's for states.

  • I love this song. You can see it all..

  • so do i maureen

  • Your comment has brought me back for another listen....such gentle singing and every word is clear.

  • Thank You.

  • this is the best song ever

  • if only this could have convinced the countries to end the war. this is so sweet. it must have been an amazing sight to see! it just shows that even in all of our differences we still have so much in common. let this be a message to all leaders of the world.

  • A song that bring tears to many people, may it be sung over and over.May that events which took place in no's man land that night never be forgotton. Even admit all the madness, humans can show such kindness and a togetherness!

RIP all who have falling in wars.

  • Brings tears to my eyes, this must be one of the sadest songs ever written.

Thanks Machree, love Jerry Lynch's voice.

  • thanks anthonyjosephflynn for that information

  • it is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard in a long time. It's a pity that human beings can't mean it with sincerity.

  • anyone able to find the complete lyrics to this song?

  • thanks for posting this comrADE.

  • Myself and my grand daughter are in tears listening to this beautiful song

  • It's vey sad & Emotional song for some people. I read that Jerry was the first singer to record it.

  • brillient

  • what a lovely song and video! thanks for sending it Sean!

  • Fantastic and so damn sad. Thank you for posting this gorgeous song. Seasons Greetings x

  • The world needs more nights like this. Thank you for posting this.

  • Fantastic song, thanks for posting.

I always think about this event at this time every year.

  • A hreat piece of music ,makes me think of all the waste of life

  • any information on the writer of this song cormac macconnell?

  • I got information from Clare FM, It's a song written by Cormac McConnell and Sung by Jerry Lynch a Clare-based Tenor.

  • That's right, i have it up in the corner about this video. just click on {more}

  • If you Click "Cormac Macconnell" on the net, There is a lot of information on him.

  • they done a bloody gud job god bless you all who went over to save me and my england for love and peace ? no more wars please

  • I love this song....and it sounds just right with Jerry Lynch's voice. So sad........the awfulness of war.

  • This is one of my favourite Chrismas songs. It brings a tear to my eye whenever I hear it.

  • there is another song called Belleau Wood about the same thing listen to it Gareth Brooks recorded and also Peter Corry On his new Christmas CD

  • A lovely song, not approved by those in charge of the killing, the war criminal Generals who were hailed as heroes over the bodies of the poor gullible soldiers.
