Learning the solo now so am really impressed with the soloist. Hope I will come over the problem of breath control soon. Excellent presentation. I love it
I could not help but notice the ensemble backing up the soloist. I must say, it strikes me as a "right-sized" ensemble for the era -- not too many instruments, but a critical mass for a sufficiently powerful sound. That is strikingly authentic for a Baroque piece. The harpsichord sounded decent, too. Very impressive, overall!
Very nice. It's tough to come right out of the blocks with a major aria like this. I'm learning the whole tenor solo right now, but focusing on this piece to start with. Great control over your voice. You have a nice instrument, very good with Handel, I'm curious how you would do with similar lyric tenor solos in other works. Very good job, bravo!
I happen to think that this tenor has excellent control of his voice, has good vowels, and transitions nicely between registers; the dynamic changes he made were in difficult spots, but added nice detail to what can often be a very boring piece. As an intermediate school music teacher, I teach my kids to search for something they like in everything we listen to/sing/play; it helps with music appreciation and advocates for music diversity everywhere - perhaps we should do the same??
You think straight toned, feminine, emasculated singing is "good?" LOL! I HATE the current Early Music movement, which is so wrong-headed it is ridiculously effete! The Baroque Era was filled with passion, daring, dissonance, and larger than life statements in music, art, literature, etc. Handel is on record as having loved big voices and he would have loved modern orchestras.
A nice voice, but isn't moving like it should. This is generally a sign of pushing. The fast tempo songs will always give this away. Still, an excellent voice with lots of promise.
Disagree with the comment about not critiquing technique. Have you ever been to a masterclass? People do this all the time, and it's not always your voice teacher/coach. Good signers can take criticism and make up their own minds.
I don't understand people coming here, watching this video and start critiquing technique. It's almost certain the performer doesn't care about what a total random has to say. I'm sure this tenor has a coach and/or an instructor. They are the only person's/people's advice he should be taking into consideration. If you feel like you have to come on YouTube and give technique advice to total strangers, maybe you don't have enough real-life pupils. Sorry...just my .02.
Nice voice, but get that soft pallet up to keep the notes in tune. It seems that you are trying to achieve volume instead of resonance. Resonance will carry your voice further than you can project it. Nice ornamentations and use the breath to achieve a less abrasive approach to the notes.
Wow what a great sound! I would kill for that breath control! I want to sing this soon but I am a lighter tenor.. does anyone know a video or singer with a lighter rendition to listen to? Great job!
This is very good, be careful not to start flat on "plain" at 1:10. You do a very good job with the complicated malismas, considering the heavy timbre of your voice. Good rendition.
great rendition. the tenors timbre might not be appropriate for the piece - he has a strong vibrato which doesn't allow us to really enjoy the malismas as much - but he does a fabulous job. there's even a section where he straight tones a few notes in a malisma section during the second half that is wonderful to hear. also, a few of his vowels (the "oo" of crooked and the "o" of "low") could use some fine tuning. bravo.
He needs stricter control of his higher notes... they became a bit pitchy for me and I believe people cover their control inabilities with a more overtness to their viberato(note 2:53 and 3:05).
I cant agree more. His high note were very pitchy and seemed a little out of control. Either he needed to try to control his high notes or maybe he could have taken the key down a half step......... Other than than one part, he was excellent! I appreciated the fullness of his voice and for the most part, his vowels were great
It really irritates me when people use the word "pitchy". Pitchy is a term invented by Randy Jackson on American Idol, and shouldn't be used when discussing classical music. Try saying "His intonation could be better in his upper register" That will make it easier for people to take your critiques seriously
If we are talking about pitch why mention the intonation ? Pitchy means basically out of tune, I don't think you can replace that by a bad intonation. Now my loudspeakers are not so good so maybe you mean he wasn't out of tune at all (personally, didn't hear it), then i guess it would make sense not to use the word pitchy.
intonation is defined as the ability to sing or play a note in tune... so therefore it is exactly what should be said, rather than to say "pitchy" I am not ignorant as to what "pitchy" means... the use of that word just irks my nerves because it is not an actual musical terminology.
LOL i feel you. i have to sing this song this semester as well. and i'm a beginner. The runs dont really kill me it's that high G# note and the long phrasing. :S working my ass off is what i'm trying to do
i'm sorry CHerbek but i'm afraid your "opinion" that "his voice is WAY too big for Handel" is VERY incorrect! Do your research! ;) Ever hear jon vickers doing every valley?? Best version I've ever heard!

Didn't like his interperatation of 1:22 much, but the performance as a whole was great.

Re "Who the... is this guy?
...er he sounds like a goodish tenor singing in a provincial oratorio. to me.
Do you expect Paul Elliott to appear every single time the Messiah is performed?
Bizarre comment.

a little to operatic for my taste good voice though! this aria may be a bit too virtuosic for him but try singing some bel canto it'll do you good!

this singer has been working professionally for quite some time. he does indeed sing bel canto, and it is, like this aria, quite exciting.
